- The beast is back! On Sept 15, a rental refrigerated (reefer) truck breaks the long dry spell for the 11foot8+8 bridge. This is crash #157 since April 2008

I love how this guy had a full minute to sit there and compute what all those signs and lights ahead of him meant, and then his brain still told his right foot to floor it.
The driver was probably districted by a cell phone like most drivers.
@@bryanwatson2791 Or Waze...
He probably was using phone gps which is complete trash for truck navigation on top of having no clue the height of his truck.
Always know the height of your vehicle, my truck is 13.6 so my gps is set to MIN 13.8
Maybe an additional 5 or 6 traffic lights up above might make people wonder, "why so many lights up there?" But then again, most truck drivers have very low IQ.
@@areality40 wouldn't work they just would think it's decorations for the holidays and gaze at them while flooring it into the bridge.
And not most truck drivers have low IQ, there are just so many of them that it's going to happen you meet the oddball on a higher frequency and well, trucking fuckups tends to leave a mark so its not like the brain damaged secretary at the office managing to spill coffee into the ceiling AC, take the swift driver meme, not all swift drivers are terrible but there are so many (they have a fleet of 23000 trucks and nearly 22k employees so we can assume nearly 20k drivers) that even if there is a 1% complete brainpanned morons rate it's still 200 drivers stuffing crayons in their noses like Homer Simpson.
It's absolutely amazing that the bridge itself automatically detects the height of your vehicle and warns you not to go under it, AND PEOPLE STILL DO.
yes! at that point we realize that some people truly cant be helped!
They're entitled. They think.
And I can sort of understand it from people who just rent a truck for a day and are not used to it (although I would be even more careful, but okay). But there's also professional drivers in these videos and they should know better. But as Kwasi said: some people can't be helped.
Maybe the bridge could have some pneumatics installed so it can lower itself when these truckers try to pass and crush them underneath it.
We had a kid do it with one of our delivery trucks. He was the office manager's son, and the owner did her a favor and hired him.
I bet a lot of them are new to truck driving.

A few years back, a flatbed with a small crane went under a pretty tall underpass in the city I live in.
Apparently, he had forgotten to fold it up completely, and it was too old to have new fangled safety systems preventing it from just taking off with crane pointed to the sky.
Suffice to say, there was a bang and much hydraulic fluid on the road.

Another channel called 'Scanning Cars' did a lot of scans and created a computer simulation which revealed that a truck driver going down that particular street at 35 mph (as most trucks do) has about 3 seconds to react. If you're unfamiliar to the area and focused on following street directions, that may not be enough time. The episode title is '11foot8 Canopener bridge 3D Scanned, Measured, and Animated' if you're interested.
Raising the pedestrian crosswalks to sidewalk level would slow traffic down, effectively giving drivers of overheight vehicles more time to think it through. It might additional encourage the most reckless drivers to pick a route without traffic calming measures, further reducing the incidence of --sacrifices of trucks to the Elder Gods-- bridge collisions.

When I was going thru truck driving school, one of the things that was drilled into your head was to watch for low overhead clearances. When I got my first truck driving job my trainer would ask from time to time "what was the bridge height of that bridge you just went under?" When I eventually became a driver trainer myself I'd do the same thing with my trainees. When you are driving a big rig you have to watch the signs people! Especially the low overhead signs!!!!
Well, if your truck was 13'4" you could have answered "at least 13'5"." and technically been correct.

But, the light was green! After it was red and the Over height Must Turn light was on, the red lights then went to green. Presumably for other standard height vehicles to pass. Apparently this driver thought the bridge changed it's mind and figured it'd let him on through since he was already there. Not! Idiot. But I do put some blame on Penske for renting vehicles to anyone who has a license to drive it. They do offer insurance to pay for such damages but most people decline, thinking "I'm not going to pass under the 11'8" overpass." It's no big deal to Penske. They just bill the credit card and go after them in court to pay for damages. I worked for them for a little while.

I’ve got to say “overheight” is not a word people are used to, so for that reason would not have much meaning. And it is a bit vague... WHO or WHAT is overheight? I've mentioned before how they need an "X days since an overheight truck hit the bridge" sign right where the driver can see it, hooked to an impact detector that causes it to slowly wind its way back down to zero.
And another sign near the intersection saying "Pedestrians, get your cameras ready... IT'S FEEDING TIME!"
@@JRBlood And a third sign on the other side of the bridge that says "Smile, you're on UA-cam."
Sadly, there are signs well ahead of this. None of them suggesting that TALL TRUCKS SHOULD TURN AHEAD TO AVOID HUMILIATION.
I like how the sign shuts off after you smack the bridge. Its like "Oh well I tried"
Who ever works next to this bridge is the real champ for putting up cams. 🙌🙌
The driver did a reverse of shame and drove off as though everything was fine 😂
Nope, he was pulled over by the police car following him.
@@James_Bowie We can't be sure he pulled over for the police car the truck driver drove out of the cameras range
But no truck backup warning signal, which increases the shame effect. With every beep, fail, beep, fail...
the extra peelings falling on the cab as he backed out was the icing on the cake.
I think the cruiser was on the approach street warning traffic while the extraction was being performed, he's now followed him to the side street to get details and write tickets etc.
*It slices. It dices. There's literally nothing that this little bridge can't do.*

Vince is very proud of this comment
Except grow taller.
It entices! And spews out the inner spices! If only there were devices to signal turning instead of wondering what might been?
Homer Simpson be like
"Ooooo! Can it make me some Donuts?"
We've all seen these collisions with the bridge before, and yet it continues to happen. If I were in charge of trying to stop them, here is how I would redesign the warnings and traffic signal:
First, when a vehicle triggers the overheight detector, the light would change to red as it did here. But then, instead of going green, only a green arrow would light up. An outdoor TV screen on the bridge would show an image of the actual truck that is overheight, and specifically state that this vehicle is too tall and needs to turn. If the vehicle didn't turn when the green arrow lit up, an air horn would sound a couple of toots. If the truck still didn't move, police would be summoned, and the light still wouldn't go green.
The cost of my system would be outrageous, of course, but the collisions would slow down even further. Sooner or later, a Swift truck would still hit the bridge, of course. The fine for hitting the bridge would be set high enough to help reimburse the community for the cost of my system.
The simplest and most effective way to solve this problem would be to lower the road surface under the bridge 20 inches would gain you the much needed clearance.
That bar is the definition of solid
The easiest way to become famous is to drive a truck under the can opener and 500k people will know who you are😂
So who was the now “famous” driver? 😂
They should mount a camera at the other side of the bridge facing into the driver's side of the cab so we can see their reactions when they hit that thing 🤣🤣🤣🤣
BRS RC definitely, great idea.
Bronze XV70 there is an easier way....
Bronze XV70 actually you have a good point! After you said that I’ve got a vary bad video idea that I greatly wont do but still an idea (I’m almost at 1,000 subs so maybe it would go viral) jk it’s joke
Please, someone get a truck stencil and start spraying the kills across that yellow beam!
Not enough space. You'd have to make the stencils REALLY tiny, to the point it just looks like a computer's progress bar...
Lol lol lol. That would be epic.
@@rblinson8136 Use big ones to represent 10?
I'd say use skull stencils instead
You need to post signs left and right of all truck kills. They won't fit on the bar.
Another one bites the dust. This bridge deserves it's own theme song, or rocky montage video.
Thanks for showing the extrication and police followup.
