My foundation used to be extremely super cakey but I’ve started watching your videos and learning about viscosity, foundation/primer ingredients, and skin prep and really helped me so much! Thank you Marlena! So excited for Makeup Geek 2.0!
I’m almost 72 years old and I learn so much about makeup and it’s application from you! At 71 I thought I knew everything about makeup! Well I sure didn’t! Since I found your channel, I’ve gotten so many compliments on how good I look! Not how good my makeup looks, but how good I look! Thank you so very much Marlena! This really boosted my self esteem! I guess you can teach an “old gal” new tricks! ❤️🙏🏻💄💋
TY Marlena, i don't think I've ever heard a creator, influencer or ANYONE speak on the viscosity, the RIGHT tool and the whole nine yards My Nars, Mac, MUFE, foundation's are All silicone based and All this time I thought they were water based, I WAS looking at the first ingredients which is usually Aqua/ water TYFS ❤, I've been wanting to try Dior for my mature dry skin, but it really difficult for darker skin tones especially with warm, golden undertones LOVE YOU TOO PIECES 😘 ❤❤
Thanks for commenting on the lack of olive shades! I get it’s not super common, but it’s always been such a struggle. Warm foundations are still too peachy for me so I use a green color corrector to mix in. But I discovered Lisa Eldridge’s shade 9.5 is my exact winter skin color and I love finally being able to use it only in spots where I need it because it actually matches me. I’m so excited about it!

Outstanding tips Marlena, you are a true professional and teacher yet come across like an older sister helping out her little sister! Your demonstrations and techniques are so helpful! You show us not tell us! Thankyou you're the best!!! 💓
U are such a beauty!! I'm 46 and have only been into makeup the last several yrs and I just love learning about the ins n outs of makeup. Love this video..very useful
Yes...colour, thin/thickness of the formula, and how you apply it, does make all the difference...especially the 'tapping' into the skin with either brush or sponge, makes all the difference, getting into the skin or sitting on top and showing up all skin faults.
That was really helpful! Wow! Normally people do lot of talking and less useful tips but you have so many useful tips in less than 15 mins video. Subscribed straightaway!☺
I love your tips for the olive skin tone! So few people know to mix pigments in, and I adore LA Girl for providing the color additives for so cheap. One of the biggest annoyances I have with "warm" foundations is that they have waaaaaay too much yellow in them. Not all yellow/warm tones are exactly the same level of yellow. I am slightly warm, but I have to often add in pigments to color correct for them. Or I just go neutral and add some warm bronzer or primer to my skin to make sure I don't look ghostly. I'm so particular about it on clients as well.
I agree. I'm very warm and just got my first Mac foundation. Omg is it waaay too yellow, so I have to add a cool toned concealer. Now I also find myself leaning towards neutrals, warming up w powder or bronzer
Same here! I have the green LA girl corrector but I’m interested to try her green eyeshadow trick. My olive has no pink at all so warm foundations and a lot of “olive” shades by some brands still look peachy on me which is frustrating. Kosas and Lisa Eldridge foundations are the only true olive matches that I’ve found.
Another cause of confusion for older women is all the YT creators saying that mature skin = dry skin. No, it’s not! I still have extremely oily skin at age 62. It’s a little less oily than at 35, but not enough to wear anything but a matte foundation with an oil control primer underneath.
Ugh, so true! Don't get me started on the young ones recommending under eye concealers for 'mature skinned' older women. They truly have no idea, as they aren't there yet.
True I'm 38 & my skin now leans dry & oily in some places so I have to be careful what products I put on where. It all starts with the right skin care I believe anyway which has helped sort out my skin a lot. Jeez I still have acne at 38 & scarring.
I have the hardest time finding foundations in a medium - tan in a cool pink undertone. Cool pink shades tend to stop at light. Instead they'll offer a cool peach. It makes me look like an orange 🍊.
❤ As a true dry girly, (I even have light psoriasis) and live in Florida humidity and heat! Skin prep changed my makeup game! Ever since I started doing a serious skin prep before makeup, I haven't looked "cakey" or "Creasy" at all ever since (I won't even do my makeup at all without prep), and then you can wear powder, which makes a huge difference in flawlessness and hiding lines and pores! Rotate between exfoliating wash and cream cleanser, then vit. C serum, hyrolonic acid serum and cream, eye creams, daily moisturizers, gel creams, cereve, vani cream (I use a ton of skincare from the dollar tree, that shockingly makes a huge affordable difference) Just prep till you are very hydrated with what you have on hand, let it sink in, if you're still dry then you haven't put enough, then a face sunscreen (adds to moisture and glow) hydrating primer, pore primer and before during and after all makeup a hydrating facial mist between steps. I also use a AHA which deeply exfoliates but not instantly ( over time) for dryness, (lactic acid lotion prescription) it's Gold, I use it all over body, chest, neck, face, arms, feet etc. I also have a very affordable PM skincare, prep the night before for sure when you know your doing something you want to look good for the next day! I now have had ZERO makeup issues, I use very affordable drugstore/dollar store makeup and it comes out gorgeous every time! I've also learned when choosing foundation shade: and in doubt go lighter, you can always bronze! I also shave my entire face minus brows about once a month ❤ All skincare is applied on the face, chest, arms, and hands Every time! ❤ Dark under eyes I put light foundation up to under eyes, then elf color corrector, then concealer, then loose powder, loose powder also on T-zone and a luminous powder all over when totally done! ❤Because I'm extra extra with the hydration steps, I am able to now wear anything matte as well! Everything doesn't need to be dewy!
I love your tips. And they are spot on. I’m so glad you are filming again !! I’m 62 and let me say this to you all. It ALL CHANGES. 😮😂😂❤ what I used to do. Nope. Ha
Thank you so much for talking about olive undertones. I also cannot use denatured alcohol, as it will severely dry my skin....so I must read the ingredients, especially for setting sprays. And, as someone with extremely pale skin, a lot of foundations don't make a shade light enough for me. I have discovered the white mix in product from Shop Miss A. The other thing I will do is buy an almost white concealer and add that to my foundation (my favorite is the Wet n Wild Tinted Hydrator!) The NYX Bare With Me concealer has a very light shade that I use!!
Thank you Marlena!! You are a wealth of information! I bought the Melanie Mills setting spray and I absolutely love it! I bought another van for back up!!! ❤❤
Love the application tip of rolling the sponge with the foundation ….. i learned to do this with powder application and it makes perfect sense to do it with foundation as well 😀
I have to thank you for recommending Nars Sheer Glow and Lancome Le Base Pro! I am blown away by the fact that I've actually found a primer that works for my dry, super sensitive skin. It really helps smooth out the texture created by my rosacea and extends the life of my foundation. It's a game changer in my foundation routine!
I always think my skin is warm so I often buy foundation with a strong yellow base. I think it's the best color for me even though if I'm honest, it's not completely right for me. Then I tried the warm foundation with an olive tint and it really blended into my skin. This might explain why I also look good in olive green. Also, thank you for explaining the difference between using a beauty blender and a brush for foundation. I didn't know it had that much of an effect.
Thank you for that !!! I am the palest shade of white and it is not easy finding a cool tone that isn't too dark. I might try to cool down a neutral shade with the blue that I need !!!
Hi Marlena, hope you're doing great! thank you so much for your videos! I always learn so much from you... Really like to pay attention on all you have to teach us! Great job, Marlena! It never surprises me how many people never exfoliate the dead skin on their faces and then wonder why their foundatuion looks like crap.!
I have dry mature skin and you have convinced me to buy the Nars reflecting light Foundation. I think the one I got is a little too light so I'm going to get one that's a shade darker and mix the two together and that should be the perfect shade. Thank you!

Wow! No one had ever talked about the different application methods for different viscosity in foundations!! You are brilliant... it makes sense! And the cool, warm & olive tones explanation was fabulous👌 Thank you.
I learned this the hard way I nearly threw out my Haus Labs foundation until I realised I was wearing a matte primer underneath n now it's one of my favourites!
Again, highly appreciate the video. I’ve learned so much from you. I’ve shared it with my friends and constantly recommending them to watch you. If they don’t have a clue or they just need help or they just need some new tips and tricks you’re the best girl.
WOW!!!!I am STUNNED! You had me sitting up straight with pen & pad, hitting the "SAVED". I have 3 sisters who also are into make-up. The "SHARE" button was next! The information in this video is genius! You are very relatable. It was following you in INSTAGRAM as well.
When I first bought the Hourglass Ambient foundation it looked great. I was keeping up on my skincare too. Then my attention was on another foundation for awhile and yesterday I decided to wear the HG again since it had been a while and it looked horrible. I'm pretty sure its because I haven't been exfoliating as much as I was.
So I’m confused I’m 60 years old and I use the Estee Lauter rescue foundation. Most of UA-camrs say to put it on with a sponge beauty blender you’re staying to use a brush?? loved this video. Thank you.
I remember this from your last video about this. I love that L'oreal serum one with the dropper and used to use a sponge with it. I started using a brush with it and it looks great. I mean, that foundation always looks great, but with a brush it takes it up a notch. Thank you for your informative videos.
Oily skin person here, I have tried using a matte primer with a matte foundation, doing all the things you suggested, but my skin is so awkward! Mattes always separate on me, and yes I have tried matte primer, gel moisturiser (together and also not together) I exfoliate etc, but what's weird is that it only seems to separate more on me during winter time, summer time is fine. So during winter, which I think dehydrates my skin, I use the fenty soft matte primer, with Estee Lauder's Futurist foundation and my skin during the day is not separating or anything, it's so weird.
I have the same problem. When I'm doing lot's of hydration it's separating over the day especially with sunscreen, when I don't do it it looks dry and cakey. In summertime it's much better. 🫠
The video I never thought I needed but in reality, I do! I have tried so many foundations and it made me look old and it was unflattering! Thank you for this!
This is the best make up video I’ve ever seen! Ever! I have olive combination skin and have the hardest time finding a good match for my skin tone. I will blend a bit of the blue and will come back to give an update. Also, equalizing the ingredients of the primer and foundation makes so much sense! Thank you for giving these amazing tips! You’ve gained a new follower! 🎉
I have to use specialist make up on patches to cover scars then try to apply the normal make up routine. To put all this together takes great skill especially during summer months.
What primer should I use with cream makeup? Something new I’m trying and it didn’t occur to me that primers are different. Thanks great info here, too!!
Help us with undereye creasing at 30 years old, no botox just no more 20 year old under eyes anymore and I'm struggling on how to apply concealer/what to use.
This is incredible! I went from wearing just light mineral foundation powder to NOTHING working with my mature she wrinkled skin... I'm sure these tips will help!
Marlena can you cover where to store foundations and concealers? I just found out in NOV at age 46 not to keep them up on my counter, my bathroom has a large window. I now store my foundations in my medicine cabinet with my skincare & sunscreens and my concealers in the cabinets. Also, the expire dates, throw old foundations away.
I always recommend storing makeup outside the bathroom only because moisture causes formulas to break down faster or grow bacteria. Foundations should be thrown out after 2 years if it's unopened, and 1 to 1.5 year if it's opened and used
I just want to say I've watched a lot of make up videos and never did it really help understand why my makeup didn't look or feel right until I stumbled upon these and I am so grateful for it hopefully the next time I put my foundation on it looks the way it should thank you for all the tips and advice
One question what if I use oil before foundation??? Foundation is ise is nars radiant and sheer glow chanel…. What does the base formula say. ?? Can we use silicon based foundation with oil ??
I ALWAYS end up with polka-dot pores. I have tried primers and liquid and cream foundations of all kinds and no matter what, it looks awful. I have pretty good skin so I gave up.
Have you tried the tarte primer? It's like a pink hue moose in a round pot - best to just put on areas you need it & warm it up with your fingers first 😊
I wished you had released this video a few days ago! I have struggled to buy my foundation that I used to wear because they changed all the shades and formula. I didn’t like the new formula. It is Lancôme, Teint Idole Ultra wear. I loved the old one, and I spent money on two bottles online trying to find the correct one, which are not the same. I finally got really annoyed and emailed Lancôme and they said the replacement shade for 048 was 305N ! How on Earth would I have known that?? It’s so frustrating because this is now a kind of Matt finishing and it’s nothing compared to the previous one that was light and dew finish. I gave up, I’m going to find another brand. So annoying because that was my favourite foundation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will start my search based on your instructions! Thank you
Hi! So I have some acne scarring on my face and would like some advice on what products I can use to minimize it. Also, what do you recommend for tightening the face and minimizing pores? I haven’t hit my 40s yet but am close and would like to develop a better skincare routine.

So I’m confused I’m 60 years old and I use the Estee Lauter rescue foundation. Most of UA-camrs say to put it on with a sponge beauty blender you’re staying to use a brush?? loved this video. Thank you.
Welcome to the paradox of contradictions within "influencers." Or "experts" it's exhausting man. If your makeup looks great w ur sponge, keep doing it
My god, this is fantastic! You are so knowledgeable, thank you so much!
Your tip to roll foundation in (using Armani silk) was life changing!! Tytyty!!
I remember this from your last video about this. I love that L'oreal serum one with the dropper and used to use a sponge with it. I started using a brush with it and it looks great. I mean, that foundation always looks great, but with a brush it takes it up a notch. Thank you for your informative videos.
Hello Miss Marlena. May I ask if you can make a video on how choose the right makeup for acidic skin? Thanks in advance ❤
This video gives such great advice. Thank you!!
Dior and Lancôme have olive shades and their foundations are amazing
I have to use specialist make up on patches to cover scars then try to apply the normal make up routine. To put all this together takes great skill especially during summer months.
What primer should I use with cream makeup? Something new I’m trying and it didn’t occur to me that primers are different. Thanks great info here, too!!
Do you have any suggestions for make up on top of sunscreen?
Hi, Am a beginner to 'makeup'... Your vids are soo soo helpful... Love from India🖤🖤
This is one of the best foundation tutorials I have seen. Thanks so much for your content. I'm happy I found your channel.
I’m 44 and used Wayne Goss’ oil tip under my foundation and it WORKS!
Thank you , I'm so bad with makeup and this really helped xx
Excellent video, so informative! Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
Foundations should be thrown out after 2 years if it's unopened, and 1 to 1.5 year if it's opened and used
That's largely nonsense.
I just want to say I've watched a lot of make up videos and never did it really help understand why my makeup didn't look or feel right until I stumbled upon these and I am so grateful for it hopefully the next time I put my foundation on it looks the way it should thank you for all the tips and advice
Thank you so much! Used the correct tool for my foundation today and it looks so much better.

Thank you so much for your wonderful tips! Very helpful!
This was a very helpful video. Thank you Marlena.
One question what if
I use oil before foundation??? Foundation is ise is nars radiant and sheer glow chanel…. What does the base formula say. ?? Can we use silicon based foundation with oil ??
I ALWAYS end up with polka-dot pores. I have tried primers and liquid and cream foundations of all kinds and no matter what, it looks awful. I have pretty good skin so I gave up.
Have you tried the tarte primer? It's like a pink hue moose in a round pot - best to just put on areas you need it & warm it up with your fingers first 😊
@@AnyaAnnika67Try primer just on your T-zone… I do that and have no issues….
Thank you
Wow! Amazing tips. We all should learn this the very first time we want to wear make up. Thank you so much! ❤️
Hi! So I have some acne scarring on my face and would like some advice on what products I can use to minimize it.
Also, what do you recommend for tightening the face and minimizing pores? I haven’t hit my 40s yet but am close and would like to develop a better skincare routine.
Thank you for this!! After years of watching so many makeup videos, I still learned new things today! New subscriber
