BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY
Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. All footage can be viewed on the British Pathé website. www.britishpathe.com/
Funny how you don't tend to think of people like Churchill making mistakes in speeches, let alone that they might be caught on film. Great stuff thanks.
amusing
"We are the chosen few. All of you. Will be damned. There is no place in heaven for you. We can't have heaven crammed."
Best rhyme quote ever.
"We are the chosen few. I can't remember it you know my memory isn't the best"
He was referring to excluding British peons from heaven, leaving it for him and his chosen few elite. Not a very nice thing to say by someone trying to become Prime Minister.
@@ushoys You gotta give props to his honesty. Also, my Hazbin Hotel head canon is that Winston Churchill and his close associates were, as "the chosen few ", the last people ever to make it to heaven, before it was totally closed off to wash their hands off the overpopulation crisis. If you know what show i'm talking about, you're a boss.
Winnie had bars
Amazing! Quite unusual to see Winnie's softer, more humorous side on film... his eyes are definitely 'twinkling'!
Churchill's formidable sense of humour clearly on display here.
Indeed
HELLO MR.CHILLL
You can see him try to joke around a bit with the crew at the start, but they're too deferential so it gets awkward.
I love his expressions at the end, lol.
He looked really cute in the end
Just the one bottle of Brandy at lunch, was it Mr Churchill sir?
The final smile got me. COMPLETELY. I'M DONE. MY LIFE S COMPLETE!!!! LMAO
I'm surprised this is still intact. I thought bloopers like these would've been deleted.
I hope this is preserved. A very rare take on Churchill- not the tough old wartime bulldog inspiring the fighting spirit... but a jovial character
Wow. Amazing footage.
How the crew chuckle Just after he says "crap" so cute and funny!! Then his smile at the end too!!!
Awww he's so cute love him
Same
churchill and attlee. we got blessed with 2 amazing leaders in a row
Does #DavidCameron require this many takes? Great blooper reel from a 1950 party film by Winston Churchill: ua-cam.com/video/yYyq__nwrA4/v-deo.html
British Pathé Do I agree with you...? Ohhhhhhhhhhh YES!!!
Now this is quite a different Churchill video.
At any rate, that's what we were going to try to do
That is the resolve of his majesty's government
Damn you Mr.Churchill making me laugh since 6th grade!
This is truly one of the best things I have ever seen!
0:38
He sounds so Churchillian!
A dialect so rare barely anyone knows how to speak it. The only time I was able to speak Churchillian was when I had my lips numbed for oral surgery.
He was a great man..Also the leader of a great country and people.
I agree with you but I tend to think Churchill's true achievement was in the 1930s he alone was trying to warn the Western Democracies of the dangers of Hitler rather than his courageous stand in 1940-1941 which really saved the world only to be dominated by FDR and Stalin. Also I have noticed on some American college campuses that whenever the Churchill's name comes up some people bring up India and Gandhi as if somehow that counter balances his entire career
That smile. That damn smile
He was Holy Grail in our home!! This man was fighting Hitler, virtually alone for almost 2 years!!!!!
Moar Churchill, please!
Rest in peace Mr Churchill
Love this man
I love the way Churchill immediately blames the director(?) for putting him off.
God bless you Winston you was a amazing man who worked very hard and did your very best for our country England I know alot of English people loved you you was our hero 💖
He had me giggling !
BRAVISSIMO!!!
Sir Winston, your voice had more power than Hitler's and Stalin's armies put together!!! And including wicked humor and the inimitable BRIT Wit!!! YOU are the ROYAL in British history.
except it didn't bro
Yes
In terms of voice and action, Hitler took the cake, but he did have several "issues" and about fourteen mental disorders; the same, he regularly had crystal meth and cocaine injections n' stuff.
Thulsa Doom And you're speaking English right now, not German. You're welcome.
you can thank the Russians for defeating Hitler. And you can thank the Americans for Stalin not proceeding beyond Berlin. And of course the colonial soldiers/resources for keeping the island afloat.
This is beautiful 😂❤❤
Haha that is fantastic
Dear Winston, you would weep if you could see your beloved England today. You are my hero. Your determination against the odds, your work load, your wonderful use of English and the huge burden of responsibility never overwhelmed your love of life - good food, brandy, cigars, children, poodles, painting and, of course, that wicked sense of humour.
Germany was fighting alone against the entire world.
He was a fat, drunk whose primary goal was to bring warmongering to an new level. An utter psychopath who the English kicked out after WW2.
And with that I cannot argue. Mr Churchill would bee extremely devastated
I wonder his reaction if he sees that India is now stronger than Britain
@@grandcanyon-pg2px It always was, even under British rule. Obviously a country 50x the size of an Island is going to be more powerful, what is the problem there?
I love this man
Sometimes Churchill seemed to have too much personality for one person. Thank God Britain had him.
Quite agree.
100% amazing man Thank God the world had him!!
''underidoedoedeıodo''
-Sir Winston Churchill
DAT SMILE THO
Lol he sounds like Pycelle from Game Of Thrones.
What a great man
Interesting that he evidently didn't have *any* idea of how to play to the camera. I suppose, in those days, few did, nor would there be the PR advisers around to coach him. Compare this to the likes of, say, Bill Clinton's presentation. We have come a long way, and lost a good deal of innocence, since then.
That's not because "we have come a long way", it's because Clinton was very good at lying.
We *have* come a long way in PR and presentation. Clinton's lying (and Nixon *and* all the others) is where the loss of innocence comes in.
Fake News nowadays...
@@abelsincain No one left to lie to…
Greatest video I've ever seen I think it should be there is a more views
Love him lol
This reminds me of a time where a woman said "Go home Winston, you're drunk!"
To which Winston replied, "Madam, you are ugly, tomorrow I shall be sober."
I was wondering why he smiled in the end...kinda makes sense, though, since he did it after he said "Peace, justice, and reign." Any thoughts?
at last,I saw him smile
Well, as Winston once said, “ we can’t have a yuchyveusugjuvexibugulgeuh”
Easier to hear the clichés when they're isolated. Reminds me of the Peter Sellers' skits.
I have a feeling that he's not lying. it makes me think that there is really another planet where you can live forever but they want you to think that when you die because that's what they want you to do...the chosen Ones only go.....
This guy 🇬🇧 from World War 2
Bceause the tories are doing such a marvellous job
I thought he had Ankyloglossia and make him have stammer, you can hardly notice
***** Churchill also had a stammer in youth, though it was supposedly quite mild compared to the King's verbal issues.
Funny chap
Awwww Winston Churchill was so cute he seems really nice and funny
That weird smile at the end is creepy, like from a David Lynch movie.
Maybe Lynch got a hold of this footage when he was young and it influenced him...
That's a gif worthy smile at the end.
My teacher has the same personality
Helooks and sounds like Orson Welles
He might of thought us white English people were the best but so what atleast he was straight talking and knew his own mind alot of people aren't like that these days Winston was a lovely man and very smart !
Quite alright.
Churchill speaks to R.V. Jones late 1946
Jones - "I told him that I did not like the way the country was going, with strikes and the clamour for a 40-hour week..."
Churchill - "I could have given them a 40-hour week - if they would work for 40 hours!"
pg. 522 "Most Secret War" R.V. Jones (C) 1978
I didnt know Massimo Boldi is that old 😳
Was anyone else brought here by The Churchill Factor?
hello
we are the chosen few
white EYE FOUNDATION churhhill KNEW
1911 Liverpool ?
AND I THOUGHT ARE PRIME MINISTERS WHERE SERIOUS
Despite some conspiracy theories, I prefer to believe that old Sir Winnie did not know that Coventry was the target of Moonlight Sonata.
He did know about Coventry but could not warn anyone as the Germans would have known than we had Brocken there codes and that would have cost more lives.I think this to be true but who knows.
Roy Stoddard
Yes, I'm familiar with the conspiracy *theory* (having read some books and viewed a film about it). There's a problem with the idea though. It is most likely not true. All of the evidence seems to say that the target of _"Mondschein Sonate"_ was not known-though London was suspected to be it. From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coventry_Blitz :
_"In his 1974 book The Ultra Secret, Group Captain F. W. Winterbotham asserted that the British government had advance warning of the attack from Ultra: intercepted German radio messages encrypted with the Enigma cipher machine and decoded by British cryptoanalysts at Bletchley Park. He further claimed that Winston Churchill ordered that no defensive measures should be taken to protect Coventry, lest the Germans suspect that their cipher had been broken."_ _"Winterbotham was a key figure for Ultra; he supervised the "Special Liaison Officers" who delivered Ultra material to field commanders.
However, Winterbotham's claim has been rejected by other Ultra participants and by historians. They state that while Churchill was indeed aware that a major bombing raid would take place, no one knew what the target would be."_

You're right though: _who knows?!_
Just discovered that the area i live in viewpark in uddingston near glasgow was once part of a country estate with large mansion and adjacent buildings, sadly now demolished, one of those buildings a large cottage was used by Sir Winston for his holidays. A near by hidden glen or valley still exists,, i can Just imagine Sir Churchill walking in the grounds of the country estate and enjoying the hidden glen with its brook and large ancient woodland that still exists.
endearing film... sometimes seems he says things he obviously doesn't believe himself "you are the chosen ones", and then this childish smile at the end to woo the viewer....given it is 1950, and he had endured the stresses of worldwars and cold war including gallons of alcohol..and a stroke (was this before or after this?)..he comes over as a sweet old grandpa with dementia thinking he is dealing with his little grandchildren...
I think he had a stroke in 1944 so this is 6 years after that
He said “we are the chosen few” and he wasn’t referring to the British public
El enterrador del Imperio Britanico
One of the greatest PM'S ever. Only second to John Major and Attlee.
Explain?. Bar the summer of 1940 he wasn't that good
TurfGuy It was sarcasm. Notice I said, "John Major."
@crazyclive Are you referring to John Major?
@crazyclive He wasn't as bad as Blair or Thatcher. He wasn't weak as was Heath, Brown. Idk too much about Wilson or Callaghan.
How did zay ever vin zer Vor Helmut?
Jagdtoq Milk Tea and scones, Helmut.
Milk bloody tea.

Aww Winston Churchill was such a cute old man bless him
I was born in england
"...those broad uplands where plenty, peace and justice reign." Sounds like a Brexit promotional film. Except that WSC was a big fan of European integration.
"We are the chosen few. All of you, will be damned! There is no place in heaven for you! We can't have heaven cramped!" - Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA
I misread Churchill takes on BTS (Kpop)
In a more sober moment.
is he drunk
He was found of a drink.
Wherever he found it!
He took more out of drink than drink took out of him.
Churchill was Bob Fleming
He carried the White man's burden to the most.
Dresden.
Thank you, Sir Winston, for saving humanity.
@Saint & Greavsie Your wrath should be directed at FDR. Churchill did ask that Polish leaders accept the post-War borders when he told Polish leaders in exile to "face facts."
A great coaltion eloquent war leader, but during peace time poor judgement and sometimes incompentance with callous missinformed bungling....
Cable St seige, Tonypandy troops against the Welsh miners, Gallipolli, return to the Gold Standard, General Strike supression, support for fascist Edward VIII, Narvik campaign, attitude to Indian freedom , Bengal famine, accusing Atlee's Labour Party of being 'Gestapo', palship with Max Beaverbrook, and indifference to health and welfare of the people. He polled less votes than Labour in 1951. I had the misfortune to be born under his premiership in the early 1950s, and leading to the Tory Suez disaster of 1955/56. A sad poscript to a great man of the hour ,with wit humour and occasional humanity
Guy was a beast though wasn’t he? ❤🏴
his lisp is more pronounced here than anywhere.
Was this the real Churchill? Is it an actor?
Yes is Churchill himself
It's almost as if he's channeling Benny Hill...
Wat a detriment
Churchill didn't believe in a free society.
roosevelt and de gaulle had a better voice
This is sort of interesting, but not funny.
Bad actor,
war criminal
Churchill wasting film
Indeed - film was expensive!
