Funny that the UA-cam algorithm should recommend this video tonight, because just yesterday I had a similar conversation with some folks over dinner. I am Kenyan and recently moved back after spending 10 years in the U.S. and the past 5 years in Sweden. People always ask me how it feels to be back home and I always tell them that while it’s great to be back amongst family and friends, I’m really struggling to come to terms with how poorly managed and disorganized our country is. Constant power outages, the road to my house that has potholes the size of craters that have not been repaired in years, I need to have private health insurance because the public healthcare system is absolutely dismal, I could very easily list another 25 basic necessities that I never even once had to worry about during my time in Sweden. And the reasons these problems exist is not due to a lack of funds but rather due to societal greed, corruption and the grave misuse of public funds. So while it is true that people in Scandinavia may not realize how fortunate they are to live in a part of the world where ones basic necessities are already taken care of and everything generally just works, the same but opposite holds true here in Kenya where the majority of people haven’t experienced anything other than poverty and misery and therefore don’t know in their hearts that they truly deserve and should expect better. hoppas du njuter av din tid i Kenya :)

Our phones even register our thoughts so I’m really not surprised😂
Things that should be simple (like health care or fixing the roads or getting your passport in a reasonable amount of time) but they aren’t, due to the reasons you listed, and it makes me wonder sometimes what that does to people, when your rights aren’t granted, so you start believing it will never happen or that you don’t ”deserve” to be treated right by your government. I think a lot of people in low and middle income countries (apparent in immigrant families) have this belief that life has to be a struggle, otherwise smth is wrong, and it probably originates from the conflicts and human rights violations they have lived with so long. There are def many layers to this discussion!

People who organized other countries, stayed at home and worked to organize those countries...probation era in US, police were literally corrupt, Americans did not move back to Europe but stayed, so kindly stop the brain drain and actually stay and work if you want a better country, stop wishing it!!!!!!!

I don’t condone the state of our country’s governance but my goodness it is what it is. I could easily list 25 pros of moving back home after living abroad for 12+ years.
Those of us who grew up in Kenya will understand exactly what I’m saying. With our bad roads, unstructured & chaotic markets , we love our home; doesn’t mean we wouldn’t want to change the state of things. I love community unity:)

When people come to Africa and say “ oh I didn’t know what I have back in my country “ I often wonder what exactly they’re talking about… most of these westerners live pay check to pay check. The so called “poor africans “ are the happiest people in the world. They don’t know they’re poor because they don’t read the papers 😂

plastic bags used to be allover Kenya such that they were a major source of pollution so they were banned and we turned to mainly paper and cotton based bags. we do not regret that.
