New Age Spirituality in the USA: Meet The Shamans, Gurus and Cult Leaders of America | Documentary

  • Is the USA undergoing a spiritual awakening, or is it falling victim to fake gurus and new age cult leaders? In an America in search of meaning, gurus, healers, shamans and other modern wizards have become the new providers of worth. Festivals, retreats and detox courses promising spiritual wellness are multiplying.
We follow emerging gurus like Unicole, who is convinced she was sent to Earth by aliens to start a new religion and uses social media to gather followers. Meanwhile, in Hollywood, Shaman Durek is adored and charges his disciples nearly $1,000 per hour to attend a seance. However, there is a fine line between a spirituality coach and a professional crook. We follow the comeback of James Arthur Ray, sentenced to ten years in prison when three of his members died during a ceremony, as he re-establishes himself on the spirituality circuit in Las Vegas.
This documentary was first released in 2020.

Yes that Durek probably fits the profile very well... I just wonder how gullible people can be to believe in all this c..p, or is it just that they all really understand the dupe but just go with it in order to be attached to the latest hype that attracts the most famous people? A big cynic fraud is all of this, only arranged so the " leaders" and " shamans" can earn the enormous wealth they all say they do not need... oh yes??? And I feel sad for the Norwegians having a princess that is so gullible that she falls for every new age fraudster out there, but then she is in the trade of new age so perhaps she is more cynical than she looks. She had this " school" some years ago where people could come and speak to angels....

That woman goes to see the shaman because of relationship issues and is blown away that he is able to tell her that she wants "a relationship where she doesn't have to take care of someone."
All he did was rephrase "You don't want a codependent relationship," which would have sounded too obvious to appear insightful.

The spiritual wellness industry is valued in the billions in case anyone was wondering. It’s not a regulated industry and whilst there are many well meaning spiritual teachers there are equally a great deal of narcissists and ego driven, power hungry people hiding under the guise of wanting to help others. Walking a spiritual path can feel incredibly lonely, unpicking all your conditioning and trauma can leave you feeling vulnerable which is how these self imposed gurus manage to hook and exploit people, they are very clever in what tactics they use. Not to mention abusing indigenous practices (sweat lodges, plant medicine etc) with no real respect for it but simply trying to make money from it. This is why it’s extremely important to tap into your own discernment and intuition.

You do not need all this expensive stuff . If you sincerely want to connect with the healing powers of nature, just go outside and stay with the elements alone some time. They teach you, what you need to know . Animals , plants , stones, rivers, air, everything can teach you. Cost no money, but your full awareness and devotion in your daily life . Sometimes on your way you also may meet some human person to learn from . Then it is not about money but choice.

Getting a bit of sunlight (just daylight, no need to sunbathe) is good for you. Gardening - digging in the earth - is good for you. Interacting with animals is good for you. It doesn't have to be "spiritual", just spending time outside in nature and paying attention to the world around you.

This documentary just made me realise how desperate us humans are for connection, love and connection to the divine. Which is ironically free for all to experience. Our desperation is easily exploited by greedy tricksters. Follow your own heart and don't be seduced by shamans or even plant medicines, although they have their place, they are useless without a solid spiritual basis and practice you do sober. It's good to experiment and taste a few things, but as your get older you realise you need a solid anchor to come back to. Find those who walk the walk not only talk the talk 💓

yes agree about plant medicine. It definitely works but it has to be part of you and your lifestyle or else it is useless. Ancient peoples were much closer to these plants and nature so it worked for them and they created system of plant methods. But you cannot expect plants to work on some desperate, middle aged, fat slob with no spiritual discipline. Which is the majority. Human dross.

@@chargerdave1971 : Hello Brother. Thank You for your reply.
Hmm, sometimes it makes me happy that I'm a gay man, as these particular, types of problems are likely, never to effect me. Scientist and researchers in human nature and biology, would tell us that woman do these things because it is in their biological, nature to do so, in order to attract a mate. It's doubtful they are looking to actually, be physically/sexually abused but they put their self worth in their outward appearance and then, this sadly, usually, becomes to end result.
Now, for the purpose of this discussion here; you are telling me that this "guru," this "spiritual leader," seems to have condoned this. I'm not sure if he was promoting this sort of thing, or simply, explaining what usually, happens when women carry on like this. Then, at the same time, society will continue to tell women to put all their focus on the exterior in order for them to be loved and have any self worth, what-so-ever. So really; what are women supposed to do. You are damned if you do and you are damned if you don't, sort of thing, so it seems, they simply, cannot win.
So here we seem to come to the crux of the matter; our inability to separate Spirit from Flesh. It has been a struggle since the dawn of time and since the beginning of our species. Even those who claim to be "Spiritual Leaders" do not always, have a good, grasp on this, thus where the abuse enters in, thus making all spiritual groups and spiritual pursuits look bad. Look phony and end up being perceived as a scam. Maybe many ARE, JUST THAT, but not all. I do not want to be SO, disillusioned as to think that NO, person and NO, group out there, are not TRULY, seeking Spiritual Growth and Evolution and the desire to Emerge to Become BETTER, Human Beings, overall. But I will tell you now; any spiritual pursuits that become big business, are doomed to fail. They are doomed to miss the mark, overall. Developing Spiritually is NOT, and I repeat NOT, about becoming RICH, MATERIALLY. Never has been and never will be. Because everything in the U.S. is about CAPITALISM, and GETTING AHEAD, MATERIALLY; even most, Spiritual Leaders in the U.S., miss the mark here.
I'm not American, myself and am in my late 50s now, and have spent an entire lifetime on a Spiritual Quest. And I DO, mean a LIFETIME, as this began as far back as I can remember. I've always had this desire to be a better quality Human Being and not get overly, wrapped up in material things. So I can readily, see the pitfalls of almost, all the groups and leaders I see presented here. My message though, is that; one cannot ONLY, pursue the material life and fleshly desires alone, as we are beings made up of MORE, than that, and they will NOT, make us happy, in the end. Being comfortable and being happy are two, vastly, different things. Correct? So whether all these groups and individuals are scams or not, does not mean we must scrap the entire thing, as the world and humanity will not be any better off if we do this, either. Correct? We are already, going too far down that road, as is, and need to pull back more, now, as is, rather than go even further down a very, unwise and destructive path that could spell the doom for all of us, in the end. Correct?
Warmest Wishes. Be Well and Safe. Out. ❤‍🔥🙂🖐🏼😔

Any sort of self-improvement thing that asks you to "be more vulnerable" immediately and is automatically assuming you need to be more vulnerable is showing you a neon-red flag. Even therapists are not supposed to ask anyone to talk about upsetting things until they are ready to and if/when it does it is supposed to come out organically when the client brings it up. Also so many people have the problem of making themselves too vulnerable and need to be more self-protective and I think that group is over-represented in the group of spiritual seekers.

I'm an ex-member of the Ordo Templi Orientis. I was in it for 10 years. The OTO is an occult organization which started in Germany in the late 1800s as an attempt to create an "Academia Masonica" which would bring together various Masonic rites (Masonry only has 3 regular degrees, called Blue Lodge, and everything after that is done through semi-autonomous "rites" like the most popular Scottish Rite which has 33 degrees or York Rite which has 10 degrees) to learn from one another (and bring those which had existed in other countries into Germany) as well as be a reconstitution of the 1776 Bavarian Illuminati. On top of this the OTO claimed to hold a "key" which one of the co-founders Kellner says he discovered in his travels meeting and unifying Eastern and Western spiritualities). Eventually Aleister Crowley joined and, as is his norm, took over entirely. He reformed the Order to match his own self created religion called Thelema (a hodge podge of many different religions but which focus on him being a Prophet of "The New Aeon of Horus". I was a dedicated Thelemite for around 13 years (including my time in the OTO) and after a series of weird personal events sought out the local chapter of the OTO to ask them for help and see if I wanted to join. I was a little stunned to see they had so few members and their temple space was running out of temporary rentals above an occult book store. All the same these people had chill vibes and were able to talk about things I just could not with anyone else as there's so much esoteric jargon in Thelema telling someone like a friend or family about Nuit, Hadit, Ra-Hoor-Khuit, Babalon, The City of Pyramids etc etc is near impossible. I decided to join. They offer a 0th degree called Minerval which allows you to attend Lodge meetings (non-members can only come to the after gathering, usually at a pub, bar or restaurant or attend the public demonstrations of Crowley's "Gnostic" Mass which in reality is just a Thelemic Mass based off the Mass of Russian Orthodox Christianity... but be warned if you go the eucharist, called Cakes of Light, contain a single drop of either blood or semen put into the massive batch before cooking it to kill any viruses possibly present) and the 0th degree is supposed to be an unbinding way to see if you want to go further or back away... but in reality the ritual contains vows which are far from unbinding. I progressed through several of the degrees before I left. I left for many different reasons but was in it for 10 years (I'm about to turn 31). My Lodge itself was full of pretty normal people but the Grand Lodge which ran out of the US began to be something I questioned more and more especially when one of the highest rank members, James Wasserman, begun outwardly spouting far-right ideals, posting pics of himself smiling with people like Roger Stone and Milo Yiannopoulos. If you search up "Proud Boys founder" on Google Images several pics in you'll see a picture with a man on the right wearing a shirt that has a unicursal hexagram and the number 93, those are Thelemic symbols. Looking into it he was an OTO member as were others in the Proud Boys due to James Wasserman's militant Trumpism. The man in the pic sadly passed away due to an overdose. Then there's Augustus Sol Invictus who was only booted from the Order when public relations got bad as he was a keynote speaker at the tragic hate rally Unite The Right. He was not kicked out for his views which were known beforehand but for making the news... oh and he was a candidate for the Libertarian Party nomination in the 2016 United States Senate election in Florida, was the publisher of Revolutionary Conservative, a magazine which calls for a violent far-right white uprising. To add to that In response to Invictus's campaign, the chairman of the Libertarian Party resigned due to Invictus calling him a "violent Fascist and Neo-Nazi" whose ideology was incompatible with libertarianism and saying he did not want to be part of the same party. The chairman also accused Invictus of supporting eugenics and of "sadistically dismembering a goat in a ritualistic sacrifice". Invictus responded by admitting that he once wrote a paper advocating eugenics but saying that he has since "changed his mind". He said he had sacrificed the goat and drunk its blood as part of a ritual to give thanks for surviving a pilgrimage in spring 2013, but denied it was "sadistic". So yeh while my Lodge was full of normal people the same cannot be said of many others especially those in America and Australia.
I started being far more critical and doing research, openly breaking my vows to keep silent about all I've experienced and seeking out leaks about future degrees. I found out that the Order had actually essentially died out in the past (in the 70s I think, I'd have to look it up to find exact dates) and an author named Francis King wrote a book called The Secret Rituals of the OTO with every degree's ceremony and teachings included. The book matched precisely my experiences although certain signs, grips and passcodes were changed following the book being published. I knew the OTO was openly leading towards sx magick, that didn't bother me, but what I found and read in the final degree teachings was far more messed up than the sort of thing I was expecting. Those interested can easily google "Secret Rituals of the OTO pdf" and find it to see what I'm talking about. I also found out there was a long history of far-right tendencies within the OTO going back to Crowley. When the OTO first came to America the FBI puts tabs on them and heard the leader state that he believed evil-moustache-man from WW2 was right in thinking Germans were superior to others. Crowley's own opinions on evil-moustache-man are harder to pin down as the British government has declassified the fact he was working for British secret intelligence against Germany during WW1. It's highly implied he joined the Golden Dawn and caused the schism that brought it down because of direct orders from the British Government as The Golden Dawn was becoming a hub for well known Irish Nationalists who wanted to British to relinquish control over their country. However in his personal diaries he writes actual sx dreams about evil-moustache-man. A man, who doesn't seem too stable himself but none the less has acquired and is collecting and publishing primary source material about the OTO runs a website the OTO has been trying to get shut down for many years but can't as it is hosted in Sweden. It is called parareligion (search "parareligion oto" in google to find it) and while it is hard to navigate and full of weird stuff its a treasure trove of primary source material covering the entire 100+ years of OTO history. It even, kinda sillily, logs conversations about my own Lodge Master and a "controversy" where he took 5$ from the dues of members (which he replaced immediately) to buy uhh some white stuff that goes in the nose.
Throughout my time in the OTO I met people from many different esoteric Mystery Schools and cults ranging from Freemasons (by far the most down to Earth, chill and normal of all the people I met were all Masons with 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons being regular people like one who was a university teacher and specialist in translating ancient Sanskrit into English) to several versions of reconstituted Golden Dawns, several reconstituted Rosicrucian Orders (the most cult and kinda pathetic just successful is AMORC and the most respectable and legitimate was the SRIA available only to Master Masons affiliated with the United Grand Lodge of England which most Masonry is), non-English Grand Lodge Masons like Memphis-Misraim which many of the OTO's own initiations are based off of, an ARG that turned into an actual cult called Project 89 that convinced me to bring around 10 friends to farm to start a commune which failed miserable (please do not harass anyone who was affiliated with 89, most have moved on and are very good people who just did some stupid stuff when their were younger), chaos magick groups such as DKMU and much more.
If you're interested in asking me anything, really anything, about any of this just let me know. To close off I want to note I was introduced to the occult through UA-cam videos and the algorithm driving my interest in spirituality into deeper and deeper weirdness.

@@KevinM88TR11 Yep for better or worse long messages are sort of an inescapable habit of mine (and yep that is foreshadowing... though I suppose you can already see what I haven't yet written and I'm willing to bet it is quite long). Almost every single Mason I've met has been an outstanding person. Whether or not I'd seek out initiation myself is still a matter of personal debate (it always should be, if you're ever encouraged to be a Mason by a Mason they are not following proper etiquette) and it is a debate I plan on continuing holding off on forming any final decision about for another few years. You'll understand a bit better reading into this response but parts of the internal debate I'm having is, to not make the same mistake I did with the OTO, do the research required to know which Grand Lodge I'd want to seek out (and more personally whether or not what I've already undergone was enough for me and I'm better off being a solo practitioner). My experience with the OTO showed me that everything I loved about it was Masonic in origin and everything I detested about it had its origins with Crowley and twists on Freemasonry which existed in it even before he joined. Through the OTO I met many Masons from different Grand Lodges and different Rites and they were always without question the most stable, respectful, respectable and genuinely human out of the vast array of esoteric groups I encountered.
The outstanding character of Masons, in my experience (this is important for reasons I'll get into but in short Masonry can change quite a bit depending where you are) goes for whether they be regular and accepted AKA allied to The Grand Lodge of England or belong to an "irregular"/"clandestine" tradition (derogatory words used by the former, regular and accepted masons, to describer the latter) with examples of "irregulars" being Continental Freemasonry which has alliances to The Grand Lodge of France and even more obscure traditions like Memphis Misraim and Co-Masonry both of which allow for both men and women Masons. Pretty much all of the Masons I've met are academics, actual professional builders/physical masons, coders (builders of the digital world,) artists (physical and digital) or dedicated mystics with any exceptions being students or professionals of some variety or another.
The vast majority of Masons are Judeo-Christian at base (due to the history of Masonry and to the symbolism of the degrees being Judeo-Christian, the allegory of the building of Solomon's Temple forming the vast majority of it) but different Masons syncretize traditions like Neoplatonism, Buddhism, Sufism, Hinduism or the Western Occult Tradition into their spirituality. Not a single Mason I've ever met, ever, has been a Satanist. The very idea of Masonry being Satanist is anachronistic, they'd be denied entry, and could only possibly be feasible if you consider that some Masons, not many but some, are Gnostics who believe that the God of the Bible is a lower creator God of a more supernal Unity (depending on the form of Gnostic this "lower God" could be like Plato's Demiurge who is an artisan-like figure responsible for fashioning and maintaining the physical universe or in Sethian Gnosticism, a quite rare belief system for Masons as it clashes with much of the degrees, a truly corrupted being who the True God sent Jesus into the world to save us from). More commonly, and more usefully to understanding the Divinity that the majority of Masons acknowledge, Masons are Neoplatonic and if that sounds scary to traditional Christians consider that the Neoplatonic tradition influenced greatly the Catholic Saints Thomas Aquinas and Augustine of Hippo and there is an engraving of the father of Neoplatonsim (nowadays academically called Late Platonism), Plotinus, in the Vatican itself. Those Christians who are Protestant/Angligan/Other will be happy to know Neoplatonism influenced also influenced dozens of early and modern theologians including Origen (who possibly even went to school with Plotinus, historians debate whether it is the same Origin or another who just happened to live in the same city at the same time... who just happened to think somewhat similarly... all the same we have no concrete proof), Meister Eckhart and Arius (the man responsible for the divide in the Church that led to what we'd now call Eastern/Russian/Greek Orthodox). In fact its hard not to find some connection to Plotinus and Neoplatonism in all Western Christianity, all Western Esotericism and even within more philosophically inclined Islamic traditions like Sufism and it was quite popular to read Plotinus in the Islamic world during the Islamic Golden Age which gave the world such brilliance such as the very concept of mathematical algebra forever changing the world and allowing for much of modern science.
The "flavour" of Freemasonry largely depends on the Lodge the Mason belongs to and the Grand Lodge to which they align. There is an allegiance between a very large group of Grand Lodges which form "regular and accepted" Masonry that share acceptance of degrees conferred in one as valid in another. This means a Mason from any allied Grand Lodge can travel almost anywhere in the world (for a list look up The United Grand Lodge of England's site and the page on Foreign Grand Lodges) and find brotherly hospitality and recognition. The reason The Grand Lodge of England is so often referenced is well.... that's where Freemasonry officially started. Freemasonry technically only has 3 degrees, called Blue Lodge, which ends with Master Mason. These degrees focus on morality, ethics, philosophy, history and what we'd generally now call The Liberal Arts (this being natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities and has nothing to do with Liberal politics). The degrees use an allegorical play, in which the candidate plays the protagonist despite not knowing exactly what will happen (a truly fascinating experience and honestly one of the coolest ways to learn I've ever experienced) and without saying more than in commonly known the first three degrees focus on the building of the Temple of Solomon, and the story of the chief architect, Hiram Abiff.
After these three degrees there are semi-autonomous "rites" and "organizations". The teachings of these rites and organizations are not directly policed by Grand Lodge but must at least be in alignment with the morality and ethics taught in the first three degrees. This causes much confusion to those not familiar with Masonry. For example many people think Albert Pike's book Morals and Dogma represents the beliefs of all Masons but it doesn't it only describes one Masons views who was prominent in The United States' Scottish Rite's Southern Jurisdiction. That's quite a specific area and jurisdiction so you can understand the frustrations of say a British Mason or even more so a French Mason who isn't even connected to the Grand Lodge of England like the Scottish Rite is in the US having to deal with allegations they follow the words written by Albert Pike. To make understanding this easier the two most famous rites are the 33 degrees of Scottish Rite and the 10 degrees of York Rite. These rites are equal, often pictured as two staircases leading to the same place except the York Rite has steeper larger steps and the Scottish Rite has smaller steps. These both continue the journey of Hiram Abiff and include within them things like (in to particular order) Mark Masonry, Order Knights Templar, Royal Arch Masonry, Order of Malta (not the Catholic version, a Masonic one), Knights of The East and West and Knights of the Rose Croix. There is also a female rite called Eastern Star but it is not seen as equal to the other rites, something that has always bothered me. There are higher Organizations for women such as Daughters of The Nile but (regular and accepted) Masonry is primarily patriarchal.
Besides the Rites there are also Organizations such as probably the most famous The Shriners or esoteric SRIA (a Masonic Rosicrucian Order and pretty much the only Rosicrucian Order I've encountered which didn't feel like a scam but that is just my limited experience). The SRIA is worth dwelling on as members from which created The Golden Dawn that gave birth to much of modern occultism as well as, fascinatingly, The Royal Society and indirectly because of this The Royal Institute (meaning without Masonry and the SRIA we may well live in a world of darkness as The Royal Society is where Faraday first demonstrated and proved the existence of the electromagnetic field to power a light. To give you an idea of just how monumentally important this group is The Fellows and Foreign Members of The Royal Society include the ranks of Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Ernest Rutherford, Paul Dirac, Lise Meitner, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Dorothy Hodgkin. It is entirely secular and separate from Freemasonry and the SRIA but was created by their members in a time where there was still a degree of religious persecution of science going on as a place for free thought and well funded experimentation. It persists to this day and while membership and fellowship is quite lax (somehow Elon made his way in) there is still much it does worthy of praise and attention. For example probably the best introduction to Quantum Field Theory you'll find is a YT video, delivered behind the same desk Faraday demonstrated the Electromagnetic Field, where David Tong gives an excellent and engaging talk)

@@KevinM88TR11 Just an interesting side note about something I'm only discovering now myself so I don't know much about it but apparently there is a body of female freemasonry that is seen as "regular" and recognized by The United Grand Lodge of England. It was only accepted after it stopped being mixed and only had women members, before that being "irregular". It's called Order of Women Freemasons. Co-Masonry is a different thing and is considered "irregular". I'll have to read more to learn whether they confer Scottish and York Rite and whether Women Masons and Male Masons associate with the United Grand Lodge of England "meet on the level" which while now a common English expression comes from Masonry and means see each other as equals. If they do... this greatly increases my respect for the UGLE (yeh, I've been writing United Grand Lodge of England because their initials sound silly... I mean UGLE... really? So of course these "rejects" will escape reality and find a place where they feel they belong. Even if they have to create their own communities at the expense of their unique individuality. Governments only get involved once these groups call themselves religions and want tax breaks. Or once a mass suicide occurs. By then it's too late.
