I know Im gonna get shit for this, but I love CHANCE what an epic song.Of course I love all their stuff, but CHANCE is their Bohemian Rhapsody jmo🤘😎They had so many great songs
Who would give you shit for that? That song rules and I regard it as one of my favorites from them. It's so majestic and powerful and really sophisticated compositionally.
Chance is easily on my list of top five favorite Savatage songs ever. It is an epic song big time. I too have always called it their Bohemian Rhapsody. Seeing them do it live the full version was amazing. They nailed it big time.
Savatage fan here since 1985! A foundational, truly unique act in the realm of US power/progressive/epic metal. A pity the lame mainstream media barely noticed when we lost Criss Oliva while they fawned all over Kurt Cobain. First read about Savatage in Metal Mania magazine (not Metal Maniacs--this was a different mag.) Been really psyched for this one, Pete, ever since you said you were doing it. In 1998 when Wake Of Magellan was released, I called into 88.1 FM WCWP (CW Post College) when their metal show had Al Pitrelli and Chris on as guests. The show host Charlie was a huge Savatage fan. I got to speak to both guitarists for a few minutes about the new album and my admiration for the band's creativity, and they could not have been more gracious and cool. I didn't tape it, as it was all very spur of the moment, but an awesome memory.
@@seaoftranquilityprog I used to call CWP and make requests when they'd play metal all weekend and later they had metal shows every weeknight. I still have the tape from 1986 when I requested some Fates Warning and they announced that it was going out to me. That was the first time I heard my name on the radio and it was a pretty big deal to a 13 year old metal aficionado! I used to tune in for Midnite Metal on 103.5 WRTN on Saturdays (was listening on the night when they announced Cliff Burton had died) and once in a while I'd check out WSOU. 102.7 WNEW had a metal shop on, I think, Friday nights back then also. And then there was the late great U-68 Power Hour on UHF Channel 68. Stumbled across it one night in 1985 when I was flipping the dial (remember those?) and there was W.A.S.P.'s L.O.V.E. Machine! That segued into Accept's dizzying Midnight Mover and I was like "WHAT IS THIS???" Veritable Heaven in those pre-internet days. Everything from Razor, Voivod, Saxon, Dio, Slayer, Grim Reaper, Celtic Frost to AC/DC, Starz, Axe, Krokus, UFO, Scorps, Van Halen etc etc. After two years of watching varied hard rock and metal vids every night, and telling all my buds at school, one night I turned it on to find that 68 was now a home shopping channel.......well, you can imagine my displeasure and the rather salty, colorful language that accompanied it. ; )
Savatage is definitely a hard list to do of but in no particularly order: Summer's Rain Strange Wings Follow Me When The Crowds Are Gone Morning Sun Alone You Breathe Ghost In The Ruins Damian Taunting Cobras Dead Winter Dead

Madness Reigns! Love you CC and the whole Savatage Legacy. My first concert was Dokken opening for Aerosmith. My second was Dio, Megadeth, Savatage. And I saw the Tage many times after and got my Power of the Night cassette insert signed. Saw TSO for the first time in 2019. So great. Why a Savatage fan would wait that long? No idea. Bring back the Tage! One of the best American metal bands of all time without question.
Hanging with the guys in the RV after the show at,"The Bayou" Georgetown Washington ,D.C. until the we hours of the morning...then the next night at "Hammerjacks" in Baltimore!!! Jon gave me an AVATAR button, and they all signed my Blue vinyl Sirens LP.I am more of an early era Savatage fan. Right on Pete!

Excellent interview with Chris Caffery… I love his stories. He is so humble so cute so funny. Very informative … let’s not forget Wilbur, I love that little guy ♥️ I love, especially towards the end of this video where Chris, says to everyone, stay safe don’t let your guard down because we don’t know what we’re dealing with right now We, don’t know what this is it’s a pain in the ass, for sure… Don’t assume we know what this is because we don’t .. We will get out of this just be safe be smart. Also, say Thank you to all the workers they are exposing their selves for us So, say thank you. It only takes a second. It only takes a second out of your life to say thank you… Exactly my thought as well. I think the same way on all levels. I agree with, Chris 100% plus… Chris Caffery, is a extremely extraordinary guitarist and he just hypnotizes me to watch him play guitar and perform he’s just mesmerizing… Thank you so much for the interview Excellent… Stay safe to you and your family Rock on 🤙🔥✌️♥️
Greetings from Greece Chris and Pete. Greeks are propably the most insane Savatage fans in the world. Last time i saw them was back in 2002 and it was crazy. It has been one of the best concert moments of my life. I have a wonderful white guitar pick from Chris as well as trophy with Savatage logo and signature. He gave it to me, during the concert in my hands. Thanks Chris... We hope someday that Sav will reunite. They have to...they must.

I never saw Savatage with Chris Oliva. He is still one of my favorite guitarists, what a talent. Very innovative, hugely influential. Master riffer and shredder! The final show saw was one the Poets and Madmen tour. Chris Caffery played all of the leads on his Jackson Rhoads V. Fantastic, playing all of the Oliva and Pitrelli solos flawlessly. Chris is such a nice guy, humble and a true metal legend!
Hi Pete and Chris. Absolutely Spectacular video! This top 10 list is impossible. However, I have a list. You guys mentioned most of these already. This list could change tomorrow. 1. Edge of Thorns - First song I ever heard from this band. A local band was playing it and i said that i have to get to know this artist 2. Morphine Child - 3. Hall of the Mountain King 4. Gutter Ballet 5. He Carves His Stone 6. Hounds 7. Chance 8. Wake of Magellan 9. Sarajevo 12/24 - The best Christmas song ever. IMO 10. Tie - Believe, Lights Out, One Child, Tonight He Grins Again, When The Crowds are Gone, Alone You Breathe, The Hourglass

This was awesome to hear the stories behind many of the songs I love. Thanks for that. It's funny, I consider myself a metal head and really love their heavy driving tunes. As I get older, I'm really digging the stuff I kind of took for granted like Gutter Ballet and Handful of Rain albums much more nowadays. The music is, and has always been awesome but the words got deeper as they progressed. Enjoying that more now as I get older. Life is good. Thanks for doing this, really enjoyed it.

I never hear a whole lot of respect from either the "The Dungeons Are Calling" or "Sirens" albums. They're raw and the production leaves something to be desired. But, they're still my favorite Savatage albums.

Just stumbled upon this video today, and WOW! How cool to have Caffery right there dropping all those little story tidbits about the band throughout the years. Savatage has been my favorite band since HotMK. It always seemed like Jon was writing songs just for me as I grew older and my musical tastes changed somewhat... so did the musical direction of Savatage and now TSO. I think Caffery is an awesome guitar player in his own right and I really appreciated all the cool memories he added to his top 10 (or 20) Savatage songs. Get me a bucket of chicken! I'll never hear that song again without thinking of that! Priceless!
Didn't knowCriss had this type of personality, although I'm not surprised. Smart people and specially musicians maybe brutally honest and I can't blame them for that.
Love Savatage and most of everything they did. First heard them in the early 90's on MTV with their "Gutter Ballet" video, and then went to see them at a bar in Baltimore. I saw Trans Siberian Orchestra in 2011 at the Wesbanco Arena, in Wheeling WV and met Chris and the rest of the band for autographs. 😀 A wonderful memory!
This was a great one. It's always awesome to hear stories from Chris Caffery. Been a fan since "Power Of The Night" myself and happy to have seen the band on the "Gutter Ballet", "Wake Of Magellan" and "Poets and Madmen" tours.
For me, with Jon on vocals: 1)When The Crowds Are Gone 2)Believe 3)Hall of The Mountain King 4)Gutter Ballet 5)Tonight He Grins Again 6)Morphine Child 7)Of Rage and War 8)24 Hours Ago 9)Summer's Rain 10)Devastation With Zak on vocals: 1)Alone You Breathe 2)Chance 3)This is The Time (1990) 4)Edge of Thorns 5)All That I Bleed 6)Handful of Rain 7)Not What You See 8)Castles Burning 9)The Hourglass 10)One Child
My top Savatage song is The Hourglass. God if I love that song! The best one for lyrics is St Patrick's. It touches my soul - and Jon's voice tears it apart. Goosebumps and tears every time.
My Top 10: 1. Gutter Ballet 2. Edge Of Thorns 3. Starlight 4. The Hourglass 5. When The Crowds Are Gone 6. This Isn't What We Meant 7. I Am 8. Tonight He Grins Again 9. Dead Winter Dead 10. A Little Too Far
I saw Savatage in Greece in 2002. One of the best concerts of my life. So many great songs in each period of the band but without Chris Oliva it was not the same obviously. To me when you talk about heavy metal you absolutely talk about Sabotage....there's people that say they get into heavy metal and then there's people that get really get into metal. the people that do understand Chris was one of the most talented guitar players to ever walk the face of the earth... For me and I'm a drummer.. Chris was definitely standing right above Malmsteen and Randy Rhoads. Chris had such a broad realm spectrum of playing possibilities you really never knew what you were going to get from him. I played Hall of the mountain King for almost a year straight. 🤘
Great discussion. Love Chris's stories. Savatage is my most favorite Metal band. Savatage is much more than juust a metal band really. Savatage has heart and soul and in many ways can be very touching. But they also are one bad ass, kick ass metal band that knows how to rock hard. Being a musician, I can clearly see with Savatage, music comes before anything else. And that is the most important thing that makes Savatage unique in the metal world. It is really hard for me to pick my top 10. But most definitely my #1 is Hall Of The Mountain King. I think most of us Savatage fans can agree with that. One song that I think should have been mentioned on the top 10 lists is Alone You Breath. And Chris, if you read this comment, please have TSO do this with Zak on the upcoming TSO tour. I would love to see it.

I really enjoyed this! I can't choose ten, but "Follow Me" from Edge of Thorns is the song that initially got me hooked into Savatage. "Castles Burning," "Tonight He Grins Again," and "Sirens" are a few of my other favorites. Great band that never got their proper due in the US of A.

Everything from Razor, Voivod, Saxon, Dio, Slayer, Grim Reaper, Celtic Frost to AC/DC, Starz, Axe, Krokus, UFO, Scorps, Van Halen etc etc. After two years of watching varied hard rock and metal vids every night, and telling all my buds at school, one night I turned it on to find that 68 was now a home shopping channel.......well, you can imagine my displeasure and the rather salty, colorful language that accompanied it. ; )

Criss Oliva is missed by many, that young man was a trooper!! One of the greatest guitarists to ever pick up a guitar!! R.I.P. Criss
I saw both of those tours, awesome
Hanging with the guys in the RV after the show at,"The Bayou" Georgetown Washington ,D.C. until the we hours of the morning...then the next night at "Hammerjacks" in Baltimore!!!
Jon gave me an AVATAR button, and they all signed my Blue vinyl Sirens LP.I am more of an early era Savatage fan.

Excellent interview with Chris Caffery… I love his stories. He is so humble so cute so funny.
Very informative … let’s not forget Wilbur, I love that little guy ♥️
I love, especially towards the end of this video where Chris, says to everyone, stay safe don’t let your guard down because we don’t know what we’re dealing with right now
We, don’t know what this is
it’s a pain in the ass, for sure…
Don’t assume we know what this is because we don’t ..
We will get out of this just be safe be smart.
Also, say Thank you to all the workers they are exposing their selves for us
So, say thank you. It only takes a second. It only takes a second out of your life to say thank you…
Exactly my thought as well.
I think the same way on all levels. I agree with, Chris 100% plus…
Chris Caffery, is a extremely extraordinary guitarist and he just hypnotizes me to watch him play guitar and perform he’s just mesmerizing…

It has been one of the best concert moments of my life. I have a wonderful white guitar pick from Chris as well as trophy with Savatage logo and signature.
Criss Oliva.

Pure gold! Thanks for this Pete and Chris. As a huge Savatage fan this was like a cold glass of water in the desert...thanks!
My favorite band🤘🤘
This was awesome to hear the stories behind many of the songs I love. Thanks for that. It's funny, I consider myself a metal head and really love their heavy driving tunes. As I get older, I'm really digging the stuff I kind of took for granted like Gutter Ballet and Handful of Rain albums much more nowadays. The music is, and has always been awesome but the words got deeper as they progressed. Enjoying that more now as I get older. Life is good. Thanks for doing this, really enjoyed it.

Priceless!
Thank you, Chris!!!
Very cool guest tonight! There is no possible way I could keep this to only 10. Not a chance.
This was a great one. It's always awesome to hear stories from Chris Caffery. Been a fan since "Power Of The Night" myself and happy to have seen the band on the "Gutter Ballet", "Wake Of Magellan" and "Poets and Madmen" tours.

My top Savatage song is The Hourglass. God if I love that song! The best one for lyrics is St Patrick's. It touches my soul - and Jon's voice tears it apart. Goosebumps and tears every time.

I saw Savatage in Greece in 2002. One of the best concerts of my life. So many great songs in each period of the band but without Chris Oliva it was not the same obviously. To chose only ten is a herculean task. In no particular order : 1) Chance 2) Gutter Ballet 3) Power of the Night 4) Sirens 5) By the Grace of the Witch 6) Edge of Thorns 7) Beyond the Doors of the Dark 8) When the Crowds are Gone 9) Believe 10) Hall of the Mountain King and now I really want to add ten more but OK.
Criss Oliva. If we want him to be remembered, spelling his name correctly will help a lot. 🤘🏼

Savatage def criminally underrated band
I saw Savatage at The Marquee Club, London in about '84....opening number Power Of The Night just blew my head off....what a riff, man...what a riff.
I love that Chris has all the songs with the counterpoint vocals on his list......those are my favorite Savatage tunes.

Obviously, it’s Savatage and obviously much less obviously, it’s Criss Oliva.
Live from NY... it's Savatage Night! 🤟 Great stuff !!
My 10 favorite.
