- So I started a new country - Malaysia (probably the last country before going back to China), and guess what? I absolutely love it! I visited the China Town (Petaling Street) in Kuala Lumpur before I moved to Ipoh the next day.
I am so surprised about my first visit - I have been speaking Chinese and I see so many traditional Chinese elements. Food is amazing in that truly Asian country - with a mixed culture of Malay, Indian, and Chinese descent. Oh, and I had a new hair cut!

Just for additional historical input, the Chinese came to this country in two different era. The first one is during the Ming dynasty when Admiral Zheng He started his expeditions. The Sultanate of Malacca during that time became a vassal/tributary state of Ming. Many Chinese merchants and higher status at that time settled in Malacca up to Penang island in the north. As the time goes, they intermingled with locals and became Peranakan. The second wave of Chinese coming here were migrants during British colonial era for tin mining mostly in Ipoh (Perak) and Selangor. There was another influx of Chinese coming here as well during Japanese War and the subsequent Chinese Civil War. For your information, Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s Chinese Oversea Headquarter was established in Penang island.
There was a saying in my younger days that durians were formed from Admiral Zheng when he released his bodily solids
In Singapore, there is a building known as Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall -
In 1906, a branch of the Tongmenghui was formed in Singapore, following Sun's visit there; this was called the Nanyang branch and served as headquarters of the organization for Southeast Asia.
Sorry to nick pick, but when Zheng He and his entourage arrived, they found Chinese people had already pipped him to Malaya. Chinese merchants looking for tropical woods and spices had settled in melaka and many married locals who latter were called peranakans. Chinese presence in the region was noted as early as the 10th century.
@@Zerpentsa6598 Correct, Chinese traders also reached and Borneo and interacted with the locals of Sabah long before Zheng He travelled to Melaka.
Chinese came to Tanah Melayu in peace and we live peacefully until we became Malaysia, when the anglo-saxon tribe came they killed, conquered and colonized everyone just like Americans. Now they says Chinese are offensive and dangerous.... I wonder. Orang putih otak rosak
The Malaysian Indian couple you shared your table with, the lady using the chopstick and soup spoon combo like a Chinese and the gentleman peeling the skin and eating the bao just like Chinese. Very cute to see. Love the melting pot that is Malaysia.

Haha I think it's the first time I see a chinese lady (malaysian or otherwise) who has haircut in an indian barbershop. Usually malaysian chinese women go to local chinese auntie hair salons 😂 so I was kind of scared when that barber decided to give you that neck twisting procedure usually given to male customers! Thank God you survived to tell the story haha 😂

Actually women in Malaysia rarely goes to these types of barber shops, only guys do. Most women go to hair salon to have hair cut, perming etc. The head twisting is part of the service which most men would enjoyed.

In both Malaysia and Thailand, there are drinking water dispensers where, for a ridiculous price you can refill your empty water bottle, it's a great idea to avoid plastic bottles. So far, the only place I visited which is 100% plastic free is Mcleodganj in India, the place where the Dalai Lama resides. In Europe there's the compulsive recycling methods where all disposable materials must be collected. Every family must differentiate the garbage in: food scraps, plastic, paper and cardboard boxes, batteries, glass (there are special containers placed in every neighbourhood and many more depending on the country). There are fines if you don't comply, however it is based on a sense of community and responsibility. In Switzerland, I was with a Swiss friend and she saw a tourist trying to pick a protected flower, she ran angrily to the tourist and reminded him that the flower belongs to a category of protected flowers and picking it is illegal. It was an alpine star. Most Swiss people are like that. Switzerland is a beautiful mountainous country which was never involved in wars. Their milk and chocolate products are considered some of the best in Europe.
Its ok Miss Yan. I think you just set a record for being the first adult lady cutting hair in a male barber shop. You may go down in history... 😁. Anyway you are brave to try new things. Yan the brave.

What's most amusing is you actually goes into an Indian Barber mainly for men... Actually, nothing wrong going there for a haircut but they really don't have woman hairstyles on the wall posters.... Hahaha...LOL....

Sister, transportation is really good in Malaysia. In Georgetown they even have a free bus which goes around the old part of town. Many cruises stops in Georgetown so there are always tons of tourists from all over the world. I went hiking near Georgetown, there's a national park, I saw a sea lion emerging from the polluted sea, it looked straight at me as to say "Look, what you have done". Pollution, plastic pollution in particular, it's a huge problem all over South East Asia. In Italy, Genova, the sea was completely black when I was a child then, most factories and industries were shut down and moved to Asia. Nowadays, the sea water in Genova is crystal clear and they are building prototype ships that do not pollute. In the past, accumulating money was the priority but today we understand, thanks to covid as well, that life can change with the blink of an eye so better to take what you need and enjoy life because we might not be here tomorrow. Biodiversity has been destroyed in Malaysia because of the palm tree industry, unfortunately everybody suffers in this way and only a few benefit from the gradual homicide of our mother. There's enough for every species if we don't interfere with Nature!

FYI. There are 3 main race in Malaysia. Malay, Chinese, Indian and of course others too. Local Chinese are referred to as Malaysian Chinese, not Malay Chinese. Malay is a race whereas Malaysian is a nationality. Have a good visit in Malaysia.
There are 27 races in Sarawak. Don't know what is wrong with Malaysian education. People always forget there are natives in Sarawak and Sabah.

@@jimmy7142 But in Sarawak, they are not minority. They are about 30% of Sarawak population. The other 30% is Chinese and another 30% is Muslim and other races.
Because in mainland China, Malaysia is shorten as “Malay 马来”. It always creates confusion among non China nationally. From my own experience because I used to work china company with many China nationality.
3 races in West Malaysia! Looks like Sabah & S'wak is not important.
She look like a walking geography teacher. I used to have a geography teacher back in the 90s that loves to travel. Almost 90% of our class score with high marks. Because my teacher knows everything and tell a very nice travel experience of her during the class that related to the topic.

Malaysian Chinese is called Mahua马华, instead is Malairen 马来人which is Malay, Malaysia Indian is 马来西亚印度人.
Also there are Mahua who does not understand Chinese and there Malay & Indian who speaks Chinese.
It is raining season now, do bring umbrella & jacket with you and avoid go waterfalls/river area for camping/water sports activities.

Hi there! First of all, welcome to Malaysia! I just wanna share that the "free service" you got from the barber is pretty common among Indian barbershop. There are people go there just for that free service including me. It's quite satisfying sometimes but if you don't like it, you are always welcome to tell them not to do that for you. On top of that, I really need to praise your spirits for visiting barbershop instead of salon. Most women in Malaysia usually go to salon for haircuts but all in all, I'm glad you enjoyed your time here.

P.S: There's a difference between the term "Malay" and "Malaysian".
Malay refers to a race (马来种族) which has the majority of the populace in the Malay Peninsula here.
Malaysian refers to the nationality (马来西亚国籍). There are Malaysians who are of Malay, Indian and Chinese ethnicity. So, there are Malay Malaysians, Indian Malaysians and Chinese Malaysians. In fact, there are more than these 3 races but these 3 are the majority that you'll find in the Malay Peninsula.
For your info Leon, other people besides Malaysians around the globe are making short cut Malaysians as "Malay". Unfortunately majority of non Malays in Persekutuan Tanah Melayu ( MALAYA) do not want associate themselves with native Malays. I believe they are still wanting live separately like colonial British empire where's they take care themselves and be rich. Assimilation with natives Malays is not a part of their plan to stay here
@@azlanjohar7634 Thos people who shortcut the word "Malaysians" to "Malay" are ignorant of the difference between the meaning of the words. Malaysians themselves do not refer to Malaysians of Indian, Chinese, Iban, Eurasian, etc descents as Malay.
It is also NOT true that the majority of non-Malay people do not want to associate themselves with people of other races. By this I mean that all races mix and interact with each other freely. However, this does not mean there must be cultural or linguistic assimilation. The country was founded as a multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-linguistic country. The founding constitution does not ask that assimilation takes place.

In Kuala Lumpur you can find cheap but clean guest houses with a private room with shared bathroom for less than USD 10 near Chinatown. The food is great in Malaysia but the best city for vegan or vegetarian meals is Georgetown.

In Singapore we have the Malay-Muslim community. They are local. Address them as Singaporean-Malay. Don't addressed them as Malaysian. They will be confused. They are the indigenous people of Singapore, and our National Language is Malay. And many of them can understand Chinese nowadays. Take care.

I dont know about who came first or later. I am Malay. My maternal great great grandfather and his wife ( my great great grandma ) came from Yunan in China. Their children married to locals of mixed blood of Thai,Jawa and Malay. I dont speak Mandarin. People often mistakes me of being Chinese.
I love it when the restaurant owner said he is Malaysia Chinese.
