Jesus this is the most underrated UA-cam channel ever. Reminds me of when I started watching Cocktail Time with Kevin Kos before he started getting more recognition. Not surprising that content about something as artful as intricate mixology would be accompanied by outstanding production value- just so sad that there isn’t a bigger audience for this kind of stuff.
I love that you're doing a full month of Mai Tais. It's the best cocktail out there, and the fact that people are still doing their own takes/reverse-engineering of it is just awesome.
Your channel is criminally underrated. Kudos! Mai Tai month? Sign me up! My personal favorite recipe for Mai Tai is Plantation 3 stars, Smith & Cross, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, fresh lime juice and homemade orgeat.
You deserve many more thousands of followers. Keep up the good work. Your research and presentation are great. Your video skills are really top notch. I have always wanted to wanted to delve Into the tiki culture. Thanks, man.
I had two different Mai Tais at a tiki bar recently and we like my recipe better. Pick the dark rums you like best. Adjust to taste. I've been using: 1 Appleton Estate 12 1 Pusser's Gunpowder Proof 1 Lime Juice 1/2 Clémont Creole Shrubb 1/2 Orgeat Dash Black Walnut bitters small pinch of salt
I'm sure I'm not the first to say it, but *Mai Tai Month* is definitely something I made up. However, *Mai Tai Day* is a legit holiday as so proclaimed by the city of Oakland!
That is based on Vic's version, but not sure why they didn't share the exact recipe. They've added many contemporary cocktails but none of those are in the original from book printed in 1930.
One San Francisco Mai Tai variation you should do but actually improve on is the Li Po lounges Chinese Mai Tai. From what I’ve gathered it has Dark Rum Light Rum 151 Rum Pineapple juice Grenadine And Chinese Rose Pedal cooking wine. I know you could make an elevated version and from what I know as an SF native for China town it is a SF classic cocktail.
I had been buying it from either Sonic or Chick-Fil-A. That's the most economical way as it's pretty cheap, but I did recently get a nugget ice maker. Putting it through it's paces now and will probably make a video on it next month.
I've found when using the traditional recipes, the Mai tai is too strong for my friends. Any way to make it more enjoyable without destroying the drink_?
Nice! Made the SC orgeat , saline solution and it’s honestly creamy and unbeatable . I’ll be interested in seeing if any other variations compare ! Shoot out SC and sunkin harbor club
Agreed! Tastes NOTHING like a Mai Tai. Too boozy, so most of what you get is ethanol up front. Who puts this much citrus in a drink with little-to-no sweetener? Maybe back in the day this was drinkable, since they likely used Triple Sec, instead of the Dry Curaçau everyone insists on today. Still, not enough balance. But through a 1/4 oz of Orgeat in there and BOOM! It's a good drink.
The Mai Tai Swizzle is not the OG… some say it is, but there’s no solid evidence that it was around before Trader Vic’s Mai Tai. And if it was, it’s just a coincidence in naming since the drink is totally different.
Quickly becoming my favorite cocktail channel on UA-cam - keep it up Derek!
Thanks so much!

A whole month of Mai Tai? I'm ready
Buckle up
Oh hell yes.
Hell yeah!
Let’s go!

Sounds delicious!
Excited for this month! This channel is worthy of so many more subscribers than it has, the content is so good!

Thank you very much!
Another great video. I've yet to try this, but just looking at the specs I don't see how this would be considered a "Mai Tai".
Exactly.
Love your channel, you deserve a bigger audience👍
The production and quality of information is top notch, easily on par with the big channels.
Thank you!
Omg!!! I cannot wait!! Iv been anticipating when you would make a Mai Tai, but a whole month of Mai Tai? I’ll be tuning each time! 🎉
Another great video. A month dedicated to my favorite drink? You’re giving new meaning to “Mai Tai have another?”
Mai tai have another twelve.
This going to be a fun adventure and I find that story hard to believe. Great summary at the end.
Another fantastic video, Derek. Looking forward to Mai Tai month!
Thank you!

I have so much trouble keeping up with these national/international months and days, but I won't overlook an excuse to try different mai tais!

@@makeanddrink Ha! Oakland knows what's up!
Was waiting for this Mai Tai month!
Happy Mai Tai Month Everyone! Well said.
My favorite cocktail on my favorite cocktail channel for a whole month?? Awesome!
So many Mai Tai's so little time.
Fantastic video! I’m curious of what you think of the Mai tai that is in Harry Craddocks Savoy Cocktail Book. Definitely is close to Vic’s version.
That is based on Vic's version, but not sure why they didn't share the exact recipe. They've added many contemporary cocktails but none of those are in the original from book printed in 1930.
Ok that makes sense. My reprint says 1930 so I didn’t realize there was additional recipes added after. Thanks for the clarification Derek.
@akurquhart I believe there’s even a Harvey Walbanger in there at some point.

I'm out of time for Mai Tai month but I won't be abandoning the drink. We'll come back to it again and again in the future and will give this a shot.
Woo hoo! I'm ready to Tai one on!!!
Here's hoping my two favorite - Kevin Crossman's Ultimate Mai Tai and the Monkeypod Mai Tai - make appearances!
Monkeypod Mai Tai is next level.
Patience my friends. Patience. Good things will come to those that wait… a week or two.
@@makeanddrink Holy crap, Derek has an isi whipper. Good things to come.
@@als.2983 It's a must-buy after making the pilgrimage :D
Mai Tai month? Heck yes I'm subbing! 🙂
Ready for mai tai month!
Could you please include in the texts what musical pieces are heard while mixing?
31 rum filled days in August ... let's go!
I for one welcome our new Mai Tai Month
Are you gonna make a Mai Tai with a bottle of Appleton 17 on the 30th ? That would be epic
I will! So long as someone sends me a bottle 😞
Where do you get all your ice for your tiki drinks?
I had been buying it from either Sonic or Chick-Fil-A. That's the most economical way as it's pretty cheap, but I did recently get a nugget ice maker. Putting it through it's paces now and will probably make a video on it next month.

Mai Tai all month long 😍
Mai Tai month let's go!!!
I wonder if the special on Mai Tai Day will involve a certain Appleton rum
I can promise it will include Appleton, but let's get those expectations lower. Maybe 5 years lower.
An entire month of Mai Tai … I am ready!
PS, it has to have some orgeat in the drink to be a Mai Tai (my opinion).
Nice! Made the SC orgeat , saline solution and it’s honestly creamy and unbeatable . I’ll be interested in seeing if any other variations compare ! Shoot out SC and sunkin harbor club
A head to head shootout is not in the works BUT they will both get their own time. Both great!

Prefiero la receta del Trader Vic....pero me encanta el zumo de pomelo para mezclar con ron 🇺🇸🇨🇺💪
Correct
Thanks for clearing this up for me, never heard the swizzle version was the real OG.
The Mai Tai Swizzle is not the OG… some say it is, but there’s no solid evidence that it was around before Trader Vic’s Mai Tai. And if it was, it’s just a coincidence in naming since the drink is totally different.
Alas, the Journey continues. I suspect, we'll never really know. But If it tastes good, then drink it!
