It seems that the 70D isn't worth the increased price, considering the upgrades it provides don't warrant an absolute upgrade. I'd be using the DSLR I buy primarily for filmmaking, and considering that everything should be shot manually when making a video/film/documentary/etc, the 70D's magnificent (yea, I said it) autofocus would be of little use to me. And with that, it looks as if I'm going for the 60D (body only) for $700! However, it does kinda piss me off that I'm settling for a camera that's 4 years old due to the fact that the 70D gives me little incentive to purchase it :/ Oh well, lol
Thanks buddy, it's a newer sensor so it will be improved and I would expect it to perform better in low light for stills. As for the Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, that's more related to the autofous
I like the way u present. There is no one who does same like u. U just say what u should say. Breafly u persent every things in a short way. Just keep it up and give us more comparison about the cameras so any ane can know which is the best camera to buy.
I own a 60D, 7D and 5DmkII...regardless of how many bodies I own I honestly think there is no need to upgrade to a 70D...My experience with the Digic 5 processor is that its a marginal upgrade over the Digic 4. I really do not want a touch screen. Could care less about wifi and the coverage area is fine. Having less works out as it leaves you over scan. What the world of photography really needs is a 7D mkII.
I think what you're talking about is the diopter, which adjusts the image in the viewfinder (to compensate for vision problems). Lens micro adjustment is a feature most higher-end cameras have to that you can fine tune the focusing of each lens you use, so that the focus is where you want it to be, as some lenses will back-focus or front-focus (focus in front of behind what you're actually trying to focus on) They took the feature out on the 60D, even though the 50D (predecessor) had it.
It doesn't hurt to have both AF and manual in movie mode. A scripted video is one thing, but at a spontaneous event your chances of getting more good footage increases. Footage that otherwise may lost forever.
I just received my 70D today and the auto-focus is incredible! Not just in movie mode but in high speed burst mode as well (I tracked an erratically flying seagull at high speed for 50 frames and it remained in perfect focus). I have had my 60D for nearly 3 years and have taken well over 100,000 photos with it. That said I will be keeping my 60D as my backup camera and workhorse for the more rugged situations. The fact that all my lenses for the 60D work on the 70D is a huge bonus as well!
it seems to be quite targeted for movie, whereas I'm very curious about the improvement in terms of image quality as compared with the 60D. Will wait for detailed reviews on that
I purchased the 60D a long while ago when it was still $1200. The 70D is a big improvement, but I don't believe double the cost worth of improvements. I'll stick with my 60D for a long while to come.
Definitely. More features will not make you a better photographer, but it can't hurt. Compared to film photography, all these great features is like having a full assistant on a shoot.
you failed to explain that the 70D now has the option of recording video in the All-i frame recording format or lower bit rate option just like the 5Dmk3. that is also something possibly worth mentioning don't you think?
It really depends on what you need out of your camera, both will be an upgrade, but the 60D is an old body. The 70D has a newer processor compared to the 60D, faster AF system (19 cross-type vs 9 cross-type vs 1 cross-type on the 600D), newer sensor w/higher resolution and design, faster burst rate, lens micro adjustment feature on the 70D, etc. The specs are listed in the video, if you need a super-fast body to upgrade to and can afford it, go for the 70D! If not, the 60D will be fine!
think about it, its actually fairly priced considering the big improvements and alot people make alot of money with photography and buy lenses that cost more than this body, so its actually pretty good(if you have some sort of photography business)
im still going for the 60d due to the intermittent capability it provides for video/photo and its cost effecient scale; you can still make quality film for nearly half the price. Great review!
The LCD screen resolution is also 1040K he needs to update his information. And I just got my 60D two days ago and I must say that it is worth every cent. Great overall camera.
Only slightly higher resolution than the 60D and if Canon's recent history is any indication, minimal increases in low light and dynamic range performance. But we'll have to wait and see!
Nop! I've the 60D and as long as you have a crop sensor it doesn't make any difference between the different models... if you wanna upgrade either buy some good glass (Lenses) or go full frame!
Now the 7d has a brand new sensor with a Digic 5+ processor. The 5D mark 3 has a fantastic low noise algorithm propelled by the Digic 5 processor which provides unimaginable low light shooting potential. The 70d with its new dual pixel autofocus is commendable, but it would only mean something, if this new sensor can deliver better low light high iso performance, mainly in video, or JPEGs. If the new sensor can deliver that, then the 70d will be worth it, or else, it wouldn't.
Great video!! I currently have a 60D and since I do not shoot video I can't imagine paying for just a very slight increase in quality or features I won't use.
I've got the 60D and I'm quite happy with it and I also think the 70D isn't worth the money. I'm still waiting for some kind of a 7D MKII with dual CF-card slot und swively- screen. The autofocus mode doesn't matter, I'll focus manualy anyway.
But will it produce a better image than a 7D,T2iT3i,T4i,T5i,?? Probably not, if you on a tight budget get a T2i, works as well as any for a fraction of the price, as long as the swivel screen is not an issue for you.
Considering most movie takes are only minutes long, a 1/2 hour is plenty.. Most events have plenty of times when you can break up file size.. (this is a computer file size limitation not a camera limitation)..Having no time coding ability like the higher end cameras is a bigger limitation..
Nothing has changed that would have been helpful... e.g. Reduced rolling shutter Higher FPS in 1080p or 720p Headphone output Slightly larger screen And almost all decent/professional film makers will not be using the AF, I guarantee that it will go wrong for what most film makers need. Defiantly not worth double the price. I wouldn't pay a penny over £850.
650D/700D are the exact same cameras, just different names in North America. I say you should go for good glass before worrying about the body, lens prices don't drop unless it's a sale/promo, and sharper images w/ your current sensor will be better than lower end glass on a new sensor. It's hard to say for each camera since their popularity varies, since the 70D has new technology, it has more interest, so it could be longer, maybe even 1 year + for it to drop down to say, $1000 for the body
Great.....was aiming for a 6d.... the CAF on video looks promising. . Now I'm leaning on the 70d. Better price than a 6d .. but that Ff sensor.... ugh.
I am a newbie here looking for my first camera. What do you think if I will buy 60D with a good lens such as 24-105mm, instead of buying 70D with 18-135mm.
I have ordered the 60D from B&H for 600$. I will spend the rest of the money on 85mm f1.8 lens and 82mm ND and polarizing filters for my 2 months old 24-70 f2.8 mkII canon lens. My next upgrade (in 2-3 years) i guess will be on a full frame body :P
my 60d used to shut down around 12 mins of video recording but recently the screen shows 29mins though . i think i updated the firmware so it may change up to 29 mins
Great review, 70D is coming out a couple of months to late for me!!! I was looking at getting the 60D in time for my holiday to Florida but now I'm not sure what to do!!!
I want to grab a 60D over the next couple of months, due to the low price now. Would you say that I'll still get years of use out of it, even though it's a few years old? I'm not all about the latest tech, I just don't want to be left with a very out of date camera.
Oh it's definitely part of the business plan. Look at the T4i and the T5i, the exact same camera but with a different kind of plastic making the body. They then jacked up the price a couple hundred bucks and discontinued the T4i so consumers had to buy the newer, more expensive camera. Personally I'm going to go for the 70D, but I'm waiting a few months for the price/hype to die down...
Oh I get ya; weird thing to take out. I don't know if Canon (and other camera companies) are simply playing with their consumers and have a plan of action to get every last penny (or cent) out of us by restricting certain cameras and making us up upgrade. But yeah I'm still stuck as whether to get the 60d or spunk another £500 and get the 70d...
I am yet to see the CAF in real actions. If its as good as those Sony CAF then its worth saving and buy for. Then you will have to add a good lens too ... I don't know man.. sounds really expensive.
Offcourse it is worth double the price. I bought my 60D 2 years ago for 950 euros, 3 years ago it was 1000+ euros too. So I think your price comparison is not quite right like this. In 2 to 3 years the 70D will also be 600 euros/dollars/pounds... The 70D also out-specs the more expensive 7D, so it sure is worth the price!
To be honest. You cant make a conclusion on whether the 70D is worth the extra money compared to the 60D, when the 70D isn't out yet. You haven't tested it, and it could have far better image quality, video quality, build and feel. I wouldn't conclude anything just yet
This has nothing to do with computer file size limitation. Canon DSLRs have been spanning files since the 5D Mark III. This has to do with some stupid EU restriction that taxes camcorders, (defined as camera that takes 30 minutes or more of video). As a one man act, I need to set up several cameras un-manned and let them just run at events, there is no way to re-start the camera since I am in the event too. Panasonic has had unlimited video in the U.S. versions of theirs since the GH1. Pass.
Professional filmmakers don't use AF. It's a gimmick for consumers. Plus it's still hamstrung with the 29 minute video limitation. Bad for event shooters and very disappointing! Still has rolling shutter. Unless the true video resolution / image quality has been significantly improved, not worth it for pro video shooters.
Bro the pace Magic Lantern is improving then I sure very soon most of Canon dslr models have better focusing capabilities then the over hyped Canon's new technology :)
Aaaa, Waaaasupp Saf! Great vid. Bugger! I bought the 60D before I saw your video. I'm not complaining because the 60D has been great for my type of photo's and video's ....also it was in the price range I was able to afford (money goes to the family first then toys). Cheers mate.
Nahh, not really. Image quality is about the same. The #1 thing you can do (I'm sure you've heard it before) is buy more lenses. Once you have a body getting a new one should be your last priority.
If the Canon 6d came with the swivel touch an dual pixel..I would get it in a heart beat..it seems with the canon cameras you have to win some an lose some theres not one camera that has it all.
Same thing goes for the 650d/700d I suppose. Ah really? I'm jealous.. I want the 70d, have the money for it, but also want to get a new lens. I still want money to travel so I can take photos argh. How long does it generally take for the price to go down and how much should it drop?

do not really care for auto focusing video, just using MF to get it to where i want. wifi... my imac got a sc-cardslot. honestly hate the idea of a touchscreen.... keeping my 60d, no doubt
Shit ha that's kinda what I wasn't hoping. The 60d is about 3 year old now though I think? I may have to get the 70d and just do a few extra hours at work to pay it off. Thanks for the info, I don't know many people into photography.
Hey, Canon's website stated 29min 59secs (deceiving) but that's not a full 1080p HD. You are correct that at full 1080p it is around 12mins.
It seems that the 70D isn't worth the increased price, considering the upgrades it provides don't warrant an absolute upgrade.

Hey, you stated that the 60D can record 29 min and 59 sec. In my personal experience, I found that it maxes out at around 12 minutes.
Thanks buddy, really appreciate the support :-)

70D has Microfocus Adjustment vs 60D does not. I wonder if the MA can be set for both "Wide" and "Tele" side like the 6D or 5D Mk3.
15 cross type, have done a full spec comparison of the 70D vs Nikon D7100 so do check that out for more detailed info :-)

The 7D is the true successor to the 50D. The 60D and 70D are essentially a new camera line.
Have done a spec comparison of the 70D vs 7D so that might give you a better idea overall :-)
It sure is
Considering most movie takes are only minutes long, a 1/2 hour is plenty.. Most events have plenty of times when you can break up file size.. (this is a computer file size limitation not a camera limitation)..Having no time coding ability like the higher end cameras is a bigger limitation..
how can you say it out-specs the 7D ?? it may in video mode .. but I personally think 7D has the crown for stills ... what do you think ?
Nothing has changed that would have been helpful... e.g.

Headphone output
Slightly larger screen

Nice review. The EOS 60D only shoots up to 12mins max at a time though.
More like 70D vs 6D.. video and megapixel ratings are the same. I expect the next 5D to feature this dual CMOS

exactly the info and tips I was looking for! well done. I would go with 70D I like the Wireless, lighter, and touchscreen feature. But I would wait..
Try the 60D at 25,600 ISO...you'll love it !
Oh I get ya; weird thing to take out. Yep. First DSLR maker that comes out with global shutter will make all the others obsolete. My bet's on Sony.
Great video as always, thumbs up from me..what does the new sensor tech. mean for still images, is there any improvement in that department?
I'll see if I get a chance to make a comparison video :-)
To be honest. You cant make a conclusion on whether the 70D is worth the extra money compared to the 60D, when the 70D isn't out yet.

it's still kinda awkward that the old 50D kicks both of these cameras' asses when it comes to video.
Professional filmmakers don't use AF. It's a gimmick for consumers.

70D because I have no objection to paying the additional dollars for a DSLR that I am going to do video and pictures with.
I have a t3i ( with the 18-55) and a 50mm 1.8. Do you think its ok to upgrade do the 60D?
Lets be honest manual focus was preferred method because autofocus during vid sucked till now
Don't know how to work everything though I'm sure I'd learn. Is that bad?
If the Canon 6d came with the swivel touch an dual pixel..I would get it in a heart beat..it seems with the canon cameras you have to win some an lose some theres not one camera that has it all.
How does the 70D compare to the T5i?
i'm probably getting it.. but is it worth double the price hmmm...
The price is ok... the 60D had that price tag when it came out I remember.
Is that for adjusting the lens so it's in focus with your eyes when you look through the peephole? (for lack of the technical term)
I have a 600d. Do you reccomend I update to the 60d or the 70d? Thanks!
Same thing goes for the 650d/700d I suppose. Ah really? I'm jealous.. I want the 70d, have the money for it, but also want to get a new lens. I still want money to travel so I can take photos argh. How long does it generally take for the price to go down and how much should it drop?
For that price i would just get TWO 60D cameras i curently own a 60D and its one hell of a camera the new autofocus feature is nice but nothing a follow focus and focus puller cant fix.
If i was to spend another grand or so on a DSLR it would be a FULL FRAME sensor just my 0.2cents
Yo g the 60d at currys is going for 700 includin 18-55mm lens
I gotta say, this is one of the most impressive responses I've ever gotten. =)
Thank for the review..I'll go for the 70D..
Don't buy 70d plz 70d it's board problem your camera it's dead
show me a Pro DSLR that has this live AF?
Saf whats your favorite curry? Need to make a decision on what I should order at curry in a hurry.
do not really care for auto focusing video, just using MF to get it to where i want. wifi... my imac got a sc-cardslot. honestly hate the idea of a touchscreen.... keeping my 60d, no doubt
Can you make a full review for 70D>> but why all that price!!! i would go for high end Nikon for sure!!! Thanx super saf :)
I want to save my money and get a 70 D it would be my first dlsr and I do
anyone know what camera he's using to film the vid?
The 60D has a 1,040,000 dot screen same screen resolution as 70D.
The 60D's Max ISO is actually only 12800 not 25600
Shit ha that's kinda what I wasn't hoping. The 60d is about 3 year old now though I think? I may have to get the 70d and just do a few extra hours at work to pay it off. Thanks for the info, I don't know many people into photography.
Canon 70D vs Canon Rebel T5i (700D) now on the channel :-)
Great comparison! The double price set one thinking. But I think the 70D is worth investing for me ^€^
19 cross types point for 70d means nothing 6D has 1
This isn't a pro camera. This is aimed at amateur videographers.
what if the lens attached in 70D is manual like samyang lenses? it will auto focus? :D
