This is just a little comparison between the Victorinox and Wenger can openers. In my opinion the Victorinox comes out on top but the Wenger ain't half bad either.
I really like the Victorinox with the screwdriver tip, but the Wenger can opener is good for opening packages and peeling oranges, saving the man blade for bigger tasks.
I open boxes more often than cans, and I've always liked the wenger can opener for cutting through tape, since then my knife won't get all gummed up with tape residue.
+Tony E and how does taste the spagetti with all the gum? ;) Na, just kidding, if you sharpen up the inside of the Victorynox can opener, it will be a handy boxcutter too - including a guiding rail for depth control :P
Great! you saved my family from eating dry pasta :') my canopener broke... I opened it. WARNING: do not! open this, while watching this video in the living room, on your couch with a white wall behind you... tomatos are not always easy to remove... There was a bit of pressure in the can... My wall looks like I killed a tomato....
Same here. The Wenger has a longer "blade", so it can open a can faster. But it doesn't matter, I don't think there's a big difference between the two. And at overview, the Victorinox is more practrical and useful to me.
Both are good, I like Vic more but honestly because I like Vic as a brand more and I carry their knives avery single day... In emergency situation I can imagine that the Wenger is equally good. The most important thing is to carry the knife and It doesnt really matter if it is Vic, Wenger or Mikov.
@@CeeStyleDj What's your point? Is it or isn't it? I can open any box or package as easily and quickly with a knife blade as you can with a can opener.
My personal preference is the Wenger design - easier to use and less mess. It may just be a matter of practice but my EDC is a Victorinox and I STILL prefer the Wenger opener!
I´m agree with you. Although both tools get to the same result (open the can), I think that the Victorinox can opener is more efficient and more "natural" to use it.
Got the Wenger Highlander because of the nail file. The fact that it will also open a can when no other option is available is a plus as are the knife blade and rest of the tools. When opening cans while camping, etc., I usually rely on my old P-38 can opener. It's been opening cans for me since I got it in 1966. Thanks for the nice comparison review.
In regards to Swiss Army Knives can opener styles of the Wenger lobster claw versus the Victorinox D shaped cutter, there is also a third style which is the Victorinox Combo Tool which combines a can opener, a bottle cap lifter and a screwdriver. Watch all three can openers demonstrated @ ua-cam.com/video/O0bX6gqKNmk/v-deo.html.
That flat head screwdriver on the Victorinox is the main reason I bought a Wenger. It's very rare to find flat head screws these days and using a driver on the end of a folding sharp tool is a really bad idea. Also being British, the 'backwards' action of the Wenger is much more natural to me than the other way. Whenever I have needed to use a can opener that was on a knife, I have found the Wenger style to be much better than the V'nox.
So... you really do not need to take the entire lid off.. by the time you get to a point to where the lid is bending down... you simply fold the lid up and out of the way.
thanks, i am used to the backward style (Richartz Knifes). Mostly for broken pull-rings at catfood. Now i am heading to the Victorynox explorer, arriving in 2 days. We will see :)
with practice both can openers can be quite fast. The victorinox has the small tip for screws but most of the screws that size can be unscrewed with the small blade anyways. I do like more the Victorinox design but nothing wrong with the wenger. 3 year update: i think the wenger can opener can be sharpen and become an awl (kind of)
Vic hands down. Not only bc of the additional screw driver. But because with the wenger, as you said you have to go backwards. Both are good tho. But I've never been huge on Wenger and can see how they were bought by Vic. I collect them. And don't like the scissors and pliers compared to the spring. They look better but in my experience don't perform even close to the springs on the vic
Clearly you're just not at all used to the Wenger when it comes to opening cans. Doing it manually is not like doing it with a powered can opener - the reason your lid went into the can is because you were trying to get the whole lid off - you don't need to do that. You just go nearly all the way around, then you lift the lid. Also, if it jams, you just pull it to the side - you wasted like 10 seconds wiggling it back and forth. In your video, the Victorinox opened the can in 55 seconds, the Wenger took 1 minute. If you had known how to get the blade unstuck, the Wenger would have done it in 50 seconds - even less if you had stopped when the can was open enough to pour out the contents. In my experience the Wenger does the job faster. Wenger has the advantage even in terms of the Phillips head screwdriver (that's what the Victorinox screwdriver on the can opener is - although it looks like a flat head screwdriver, it's not designed as such), because Wenger's fingernail file can be used as a Phillips head screwdriver. Also, Wenger knives almost all have a fingernail file where Victorinox has that useless second knife.
And also, isn't the tool suppoused to be used foward style? Wegner and the experts recomend you to use the can opener foward and not backwards because you can damage the poing edge of the tool
***** It's possible, but whether it's simple or not depends on the can. I've had it be both simple and difficult with both the Vic and the Wenger. But my point is, why does anyone need to take the top off? It's less hassle (less likely to cut your fingers) if you leave it on. The biggest advantage of the Wenger is that it doesn't slip as you're cutting. The way the Vic works, it tends to be pulled into the hole, making each cut shorter and less efficient. I've never had the Wenger slip on me.
Sad to say, since the can opener I remember from my childhood finally broke, my wenger pocket knife is the best, most reliable can opener in the house. Haven't been able to find a regular kitchen can opener to match it in either speed or reliability. Not sure why he was having trouble with the wenger at the end of the cut; I can usually get my cans down to a sliver of steel without much difficulty. I also own a victorinox but I've never liked its can opener. Might have to give it another try and see if it works better than I remember.
Well, people have different preferences. Long ago, during my conscription time, we got a can opener with our Knife, Fork and Spoon for "ourdoor eating". It was the same style as the old Wenger style can opener. I had real difficulties using it, so i tried the one of the Victorinox i had in my pocket, and since then i prefer it over the wenger style. (Leatherman uses the Wenger style too.)
Only to open a can i prefer the Wenger Opener, but overall the Victorinox because the screwdriver. With a little practice you will open a can with both of them much faster than in the Video.
Good video. Shame there's a Victorinox vs Wenger war in the comments. I personally prefer the Wenger because it has more uses than just opening cans such as making small carvings and package opening. That said, now that Victorinox has bought Wenger, we're unlikely to see the Wenger can opener on any new knives which is a damn shame if you ask me. I love Swiss Army Knives from everybody, I want to see more variety in the tools not fewer.
People are so silly. They'll favor one brand over the other just because they own one brand even if they had no experience with the other. I have had the same Wenger since I was maybe 9 or 10. I'm 39 now. People are saying: "Victorinox is better!" I'm sure they are great as well. You can like multiple brands at once you know. It's brand bias lol. It's like when I used to sell TVs years ago. Customers would come in saying: "My RCA is the best TV ever" (RCA at the time was making making rather cheap TVs) I told him that there are many other brands that make exceptional TVs and wondered what other brands has he tried....turns out just the RCA.... *sigh*.... Lol.
Don't hold your thumb over the can opener, you're killing your leverage. Hold the hand of the Swiss Army knife. I open cans about twice as fast, the victorinox is amazing to use especially on the 93 mm models they are so beefy they just tear through cans.
Imo, when using the wenger the lid has to be lifted up at 1:31 or when the can is 3/4 way opened or just before the lid gives way; easier that way :) Your video shows that it's a personal choice afterall - enjoyed; thanks for sharing - namaste
when ur opening it and ur mom is around she will make it take 10 minutes because she will make u stop 30 times to remind u how dangerous what your doing is
With the Voctorinox: You must hold the grip strictly tangentially to the rim, and cut as near to the rim as possible. Doing this, you can achieve a forward slide with the blade, comparable to a pair of scissors cutting cloth, when you dont need to "pump" with the handles. Maybe, this is also true for the Wenger-style, but I have no Wenger...
i wish all multi-tools had the victorinox style. ive opened quite a bit of cans with my victorinox climber. and ive tryed the one on my leatherman wave (it looks just like the wenger) just for compearason a few times. the victorinox is shorter. so you get more leverage. and it also has a screw-driver witch is a great bonus
Personally I prefer the Wenger style can opener because it's a dedicated "opener" tool that can open both cans and bottles, compared to the Victorinox which has two different tools for opening a can and a bottle. I don't like the idea of the Victorinox opener tools doubling up as a screwdriver and would prefer them to be standalone components.
I think the Victorinox opener works better. That’s probably the single biggest reason I like Victorinox Swiss Army Knives better than the Wenger ones. The Victorinox and Wenger companies have apparently merged now, and some of the SAKs they are producing have the Victorinox style can opener, while others have the Wenger style.
The Victorinox has the advantage of the flathead screwdriver which also works pretty good for philips screws. However, if your pocketknive already has a small flathead and a philips I prefer the Wenger can opener. I´m faster with it, I never got stuck and it cuts a little cleaner. But that´s only minor advantage, not why I prefer it. The benefit of the Wenger is that you can also drill holes in wood or work on sheet metal. I cut a hobo stove out of a tin easily - impossible with the victorinox.
I like both. I prefer Victorinox but it’s really a 51% thing. My Wengers all have a phillips in the back and my Victorinox have a corkscrew. I have to sacrifice that nice wine to screw in philipshead screws I guess!!
Got P38's on most of my different sets of keys. (Still have one I've carried since the 80's) It's opened countless cans, and adjusted nearly as many rifle scopes. And a P51 on the work keys. Love em.

i open all my cans with a wenger. i dont have a "kitchen can opener". It's absolutely no big deal and it does it very clean and easy, but you guy seem never to have used it.
Since a few years ago everybody seems to copy opinions and terms from Nutnfancy, like POU, FFG is the best, Gimping is necessary and also the can opener thing. It seems that GearGuy0100 did not open cans very often so he is not as experienced with it. The Wenger dominates the Victorinox can opener in every fascet because you move the can away from you and you actually see what you are cutting not so with the victorinox. And the Point that the victorinox opener has a Little Driver on the end..... come on. How useful is that? It doesnt go deep enough in whatever screwhead. I prefer to have a good dedicated can opener than having 2 not so good Tools. To Everybody: Get your own opinions and experiences: FFG is ok and has some Advantages, but also some disadvantages, like it is a thin blade and very weak. Gimping is not NEEDED. Take a Piece of paper on your table and then make a cut in middle...... where is your thumb? Not on the top it is on the side of the handle there where it should be naturally. And also the can opener...... open up 50 cans and tell me which one suits best :-) Just my two Cents.
to be honest, in case you have NO can opener by your side, you be lucky to have one on your knife, no matter if forward or backward style ;)
I really like the Victorinox with the screwdriver tip, but the Wenger can opener is good for opening packages and peeling oranges, saving the man blade for bigger tasks.
The can opener screwdiver side of things on the Victorinox seems to work very well on a lot of philips head screws... :)

interesting point. I sharpen my vic can opener just to have it perform optimally on can opening but i'll need to try it for box opening too.

Now compare these two to the old "lobster claw" style can opener that the old Boy Scout knives have.
There’s a lot of UA-cam videos showing how dangerous those old lobster claws are. Both the Wenger AND Victorinox are better, safer options!

I love the Victorinox. However, these days, most cans in the U.K. are ring pulls, so there is no need for an opener.
I like my Victorinox Canopener so much, that i also open Ring pull cans bottom up with my knife. 😊

Don't know about the Wenger as I have never used one but you are going the wrong way with the Victorinox - you should go backwards not forwards.
What, no, you're supposed to go forwards, that's where the blade Olof the opener is.
Right! You need more practice.
I stop the video on 4:49 it is clear you guy do not have any skills to handle any knife... do not cook with your mom.
Canimal cruelty! You are harming cans in this video!
