EXCELLENT installment! Your love and appreciation for art and the artists who create it is truly commendable! It is an honour to be included on this episode’s “artist corner”. Thank you again… 🙏
I am lucky to know Zeng on a personal level, having been to his studio in Beijing in 2006. My reaction was immediate : I knew I was in the company of a genius and master in the tradition of a Cezanne . He is by far, one of the most sophisticated painter alive today ( in my humble opinion one of the top 3 of all painters alive today ) easily outclasses other European and American artists working on canvas. He also remains my favorite painter to look for inspiration at ( and collect )
This art is absolutely timely. It wonderfully captures the crass, anxious, fixated, and hedonistic quality of our experience. The eyes are too large-- we've seen too much.. .
Fanzhi is interesting and enigmatic at the same time. His work reminds me of caricature in a way that is unsettling, especially his ability to distort various body parts like hands. The exaggeration of the body the way Fanzhi does is extremely unsettling. It gives the impression that the "people" in the art are aliens and are trying to assimilate into human society. His use of color is also striking. The piece that I have seen that moved me was his take on The Last Supper. I giggled and felt uncomfortable about doing so.
i'd love to see more artists from around the world like this, theres always so many different life experiences and cultural touchpoints that affect the art that people create
Would love to see more videos on asian modern art!! Its something ive long wanted to know more about but have had no clue how to approach it or where to begin.
You should look up Sue Coe. Her artwork is very dark, political, and meaningful. I was introduced to it when she had an exhibition at my college's art gallery
One of his paintings reminded me of Francis Bacon. Some of these paintings blew my mind and some of them freaked me out. Great video.... Again. 😊. I loved the new artist in Artist's Corner. I'm gonna check them out! I finally had the balls to send you my art... But I kinda forgot to tell you stuff about me to understand. But I'm sure you have a million artists to work with. I'm just happy I got through my fear and sent it to you. Lol
😮hospital triptych reminds me of some of Paula rego’s work. Love your channel, love your videos. Speaking of Paula rego, why not do a video on her work and career? Trivia fact: her son in law is Ron mueck.
I love this! Could you maybe look into covering Norval Morrisseau ? he is an amazing indigenous artist from Canada and his work is beautiful and inspires me everyday!
I was wondering if you could look into some artists from the continent of Africa one day. I was at a museum recently where there were some absolutely stunning paintings from African artists, to the point that I’ve been studying them when it comes to animals or people with darker skin tones. However, when I do research I see so many photographers and painters who have composition skills that are absolutely stunning compared to many artists from the eco north lately.
Great video, I thought I heard the soundtrack to one of the cube escape games in the background (probably Arles? Correct me if I’m wrong) but turns out that track is royalty free 😭
Google "the concept of 'face' in asian culture." Fanzhi's masked people is not something he made up as an image. Its addressing things that are very deep in his culture. In ancient Rome there was a similar thing called 'dignitas' (as opposed to 'gravitas' ) that was sort of like that. Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon to prevent his dignitas from being destroyed. Intangibles often drive human behavior. The wikipedia page on Zeng Fanzhi says he is "based in Beijing." So that would mean if he did anything at all that Xi Jinping didn't like, he would vanish in an instant. That is a high wire life to live.
Can you please dumb it down? It is hard to understand, even though i am considered smart i cannot understand what this is by complicated words and history
@@iruchan-ff9iq tldr: if the artist painted how people really felt without the masks, aka heavily criticise moden Chinese society, he'd be Made Vanished by the CCP. Artists like Wei Wei can't make the stuff he does and live in China with no reprocussions, so he doesn't live there anymore.
@iruchan-ff9iq What do you need explained about what OP said? Ill explain it more simple because just based on the way you wrote I dont think English is your first language. But you have to tell me what parts you need explanation for.
The CCP wouldn't allow any art to be seen that didn't prop up their regime in some way. His social commentary is only skin deep. If he were to tackle the really big issues in China he'd be producing his paintings from a prison cell.
I thought of how 1964 was the end of the cultural revolution he was born just when China was ending the class war and relocation of peoples against their wills. The masks make me think of the fear to hide who you as an individual are into the mass conformity to avoid trouble

It's like...he paints his characters, then steals their faces. Very, very strange.
Didn't know him, thanks for sharing.

This guy's work is awesome, thanks so much for introducing him

What do you like about it over every other channel?
@supme7558 his love and true appreciation for the art, you really feel like you get to know the artist thru this channel.
Your narration is so captivating and your choice of art really broadens my horizon thank you!
Lord knows this video needs more traction. Thank you for your work on showing and exposing us to these artists. I'm enamored.

Always a good day when you post. I googled Joel Peter Witkin after your 250K sub live stream, and holy smokes, he is disturbing.
This is EXACTLY what I needed. Thank You.
This video was absolutely amazing. Those eyes, the hands, the dreaminess..
His work is inspiring
I know this posted yesterday, but I waited until I could truly devote time to this
love learning about new artists from your channel! keep it up
This channel is fucking awesome, keep doing your thing ❤️
I adore your content, thank you!
This inspires me to teach a course on Chinese history and culture.
The angles used by *Fanzhi* are interesting & not easy to achieve. His work has great depth & his face reflects it all
I love your channel, you have taught me so much.
Beautiful! Thank you!
I've seen his art being used as masks around here. It was wild and madness for just that part.

Good job!!
Great essay, thabk you
Does one reads Chinese canvas as us in the West, from the left to the right/up to down, or vice-versa?
Could I suggest Joe Coleman or Viktor Safonkin - loving your content!
I recommend you check out the art and movies of Ralph Bakshi
0:46 what ?
Out of all selections I think the Tiannemen Square interpretation is most striking because past and present are colliding with each other.
Reminds me of Yue Minjun. They have a keen eye on making the face the main focus of their works. Amazing analysis btw!!
the surgery environment was definitely not sterile with all those naked hands but good video as always
Wow! The same themes - poverty porn for the rich: Jesus, death, resurrection, etc.
The eyes and hands freak me out
