Ronnie had a power of lyrics and personality that drove the band. No one else could do this...it is what holds bands together. Mick Jagger has it. Paul McCartney did not.
Thanks for posting this. I’m 37 years old and remember my dad jamming this on the stereo when I was around 6 years old. Fast forward to being like 16 and I smell weed for the first time and my mind makes a direct flashback to that moment in time. RIP Dad, good stuff. I’ve only recently started researching Lynyrd Skynyrd and as a musician myself it’s crazy the amount of talent they had on board at any given time. While every life lost the day of the plane crash was equally tragic, losing Steve Gaines was just a big of blow to the band as Ronnie. King was King though. Thanks again.
This is the coolest story I have ever heard and makes me so proud to be a Skynyrd guy! My little brother was 8 years younger than me and grew up much the same way. I bet your dad was cool!
I devour any bootleg of Steve I can get because Ronnie let him improvise way more than the others and there was always something fresh and cool in his playing. I Never Dreamed was the pinnacle of his playing to me. He's just flat out one of my all time heroes and reminds me of an American Paul Kossoff in the sense that he died WAY too young with SO much unfulfilled promise. Just one of the all time great rock and roll tragedies. I believe Ronnie thought he had really met his soulmate in Steve. Allen and Gary could write great riffs but Steve could write, play, AND sing. He was a true triple threat and was already helping Ronnie to take some breathers on the last tour by singing in You Got That Right and soloing on Aint No Good Life.

Said it before say it here again, the Street Survivors LP coulda been called, a Steve Gaines solo record - with Skynyrd backing him up. Of 7 original songs, Gaines had 2 co-credits & 2 alone. Yeah by that time Skynyrd WERE tighter than cowboy boots 2 sizes too small, & a juggernaut just starting to roll, (and b/c of Gaines' remotivating them all) but SS has Steve Gaines' guitar signature ALL over it, first groove on the vinyl til the needle lifts off at the end. Buddy Holly's plane crash will always be, "the day the music died"; but Steve Gaines's career cut short for me, the one still stings the most.
