steve would have been a great blues singer and player. he was awesome with skynnrd. this man had tremendous avenues. sorry he is gone. I miss him everyday.
So much talent, so much future, but so little time. The sky was the limit for Steve. But just like so many other great guitarists, he left this world too soon.
My favorite song ❤️❤️❤️ Rest In Peace Steve Gaines, your sweet soul an music lives on. Always keepin your legacy alive. Showing new folks daily about you!!
I've tried to find out as much as possible over the years, and a few things seem to come up again over and over: his generosity, his patience and kindness with younger/less skilled players, and that he was just a really nice guy.
Steve was another major talent added to the already blockbuster group. I was only a teenager at the time but Skynyrd is still my alltime fav. Have a great day!
This great band to me is my life my southern Virginia soul but I force myself to watch these videos for I instantly tear up I feel so empty that it hurts I feel so hollow I hate that they were taken from their family's and us the super fans! I don't want to hear God had a plan always I will hail their noble names and luv these dear departed souls!!!!!!!!!!
Steve was the perfect addition to Skynyrd. On the live album his guitar skills are amazing, his Sweet Home Alabama solo's for example. Then Street Survivors!! That album was the beginning of a greater Skynyrd. Cut short.
+d square I totally agree....Steve would've either gone out on his own, or he would've made Skynyrd go from awesome to unbelievably extraordinary. He had the best voice in the band and wasn't going to be held back.
Billy Joey fuck you old man you couldn’t stand toe to to me. Ed King was a fat joke, Steve Gaines wasn’t shit. And I’m here to tell you to go fuck yourself buddy!! Read this comment and literally take a step back and fuck yourself.
I grew up in his area, near Miami OK. He had a band that played at our senior banquet. Not sure, but I believe the band was: Cellar Door - which was a very popular local band. I saw him many other times but never talked with him. His Dad owned a concrete company, Gains Bros. Concrete
The crash happened on my 5th birthday. I've always had a special connection to Skynyrd, but especially Steve. What a horrible loss. White boy sure could play them blues.
I was 15 and home with a wicked flu that made sleep impossible. Around midnight Atlantic time (11pm eastern) the news report came in on our local AM station about the crash. I distinctly remember the names of those band members lost in the order they read them off: Ronnie Van Vant, Cassie Gaines, Steve Gaines. I also remember the announcer mentioning that the band formed after being kicked out of their high school gym class for having long hair. Bought Street Survivors shortly thereafter....
my daughter and my grandkids and I just saw the band at Greensboro nc on 11/13/2021. the music lives on, I wonder what it would be like if the plane hadn't gone down. my daughter was born on 9/37/77, my wife had given her a bottle of milk when the radio announced that the plane had crashed .I would have liked to see just how great the music would have been if they had not been killed. RIP to the greatest band ever.
Steve Gaines has a hellish good voice, he is very good, God , rest his soul along w/ his sister Cassie who also sang& Ronnie & the rest who perished on their doomed flight , and for those who were in that plane. Pilot error 100% . Can you imagine slow dancing to this song, it's heavenly great!
God needed another fabulous guitar player for his amazing band in Heaven. Better to have had him for a short while then not at all. Seen them in Chicago just three short months before the Free Bird went down. They were at their prime. And Steve shined. Best I'd ever heard them. " One In The Sun" Nice post.
I don't get it why people say that Steve's life was supposed to be that way. Why God would make people suffer and let them die in tragic accidents? Life is the best thing that you can get, and it should be long. Those tragedies should have never happened.
Steve was the perfect complement to Lynyrd, the perfect trio with Gary and Allen ... amazing guitarist !!! ... Steve, we enjoyed your great talent, a short time, but what you left us was enough to fill the soul! .. Thanks Steve!
And funny enough, Ronnie wasnt the most talented in the band. Steve was. In fact I could see Steve going back solo as he was just too bright to be in the shadow of another leader.
@@johnniejarrell6268 Steve Gains could sing better than Ronnie, play guitar, write music and lyrics. Ronnie was a powerful frontman who wrote amazing song lyrics. I say talented because he was. He would have eventually went back solo.
What a voice, like no other. And man could he play his guitar! I ask God why did they have to leave us all too soon? Just think of all the music that we have missed. Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, and Leon, rest in peace.
I'm 54 and I remember when Steve joined LS and I immediately heard what he was bringing to the table...I already loved their sound the other guitarists were awesome. But the stage presence was obvious. And when he played, I was awestruck. What I liked most, was that he did not try to steal thunder from the other two guys, who were absolutely great in their own right, but the second that Gaines was given some air time, I could hear a distinct difference in the guitar - and I knew he was a step ahead, but he was not there to take over or show off. Botyom line - that MAN was Top Shelf. Steve Gaines wasnt a "diamond in the rough", Steve was already a genuine diamond and he sparkled with sheer brilliance - the 'total package' for sure. Then he was gone...and I was like ..what the F%#&? 42 years later I am still saying wtf...?
This song, as well as all the songs from the self-titled album, "Steve Gaines," were recorded before Steve was hired by LS. All of those songs were recorded at Leon Russell's Church Studios in Tulsa and Capricorn Studios in Macon, by Steve's band Crawdad. At the time, the songs were intended to be released under the band's name. None of the members of LS played on the album, although when the album was released posthumously, MCA in their wisdom, put a photo of LS on the cover. Aside from the front cover shot of Steve, no photo of the Crawdad band was included anywhere, however, the album credits do list the musicians and the songs credits reveal that while most of the songs were written and sung by Steve, a couple of the songs were co-written by Steve and fellow guitarist John Moss and drummer Ronnie Brooks. John wrote and sang one song, and he and Steve split vocal duties on another. A couple of the songs are covers. Crawdad was an incredible band, probably more akin to the Allman Brothers and Little Feat than LS, and it's a shame that those guys never got the credit they were due for their work on the wonderful songs that they recorded for this album. It's also a shame that they never had a chance to record many of the other songs that were in their repertoire. And here's the real kicker- none of those guys ever got paid for their contributions to the album.
I watched an interview with Rossington about Cassie Gaines wanting skynard to let her brother sit in on a show. His band, Crawdad, was playing at the local Holiday Inn. Rossington and the band admittedly dismissed the idea. She said she had a record of his songs and she encouraged the band to give it a listen. They never did. Stevie shows up with a guitar as they are warming up for the show. They give him a quick show of what songs he would sit in on and they were kind of put off that he didn't really seem to pay attention, or strap up his guitar to start fingering out the songs. They were like, " oh, this aint gonna be good. He's gonna lay an egg when he gets on stage. Needless to say, he blew them away. By the end of the night, Stevie was telling his old band, "goodbye", and he was on a tour bus with a suitcase and a guitar.
First time I heard this but not a surprise. I knew he could sing, play and compose. In the late 60's he did some variations of the Band and Neal Young that I thought were better than the originals. His guitar riffs were up there in a class with Hendrix. Still say he is one of the top three guitarist I have ever seen. I am glad your legacy still lives in your music and it is even more emotional knowing you left us too soon.
Only 28 years old when he died. Younger than Hank Williams. Think of what we missed!

I had the privilege to see this man only 3 days before his death. Many tears shed listening to this
i saw them 5 days before. what a line up, Just fucking SHINING!!!!
Real music truly is soul penetrating and heart felt
Saw Steve with his band Crawdaddy in a park in Joplin Missouri. They were 2nd or 3rd band that played that day. This was about a year before he joined Skynynard. He was awesome.
steve would have been a great blues singer and player. he was awesome with skynnrd. this man had tremendous avenues. sorry he is gone. I miss him everyday.
Born with the gift.
So much talent, so much future, but so little time. The sky was the limit for Steve. But just like so many other great guitarists, he left this world too soon.
He was amazing
What a loss. He would have become an American legend.
,' ) Funny, he already is to me
He is . god bless America.
He’s a legend due to how short his life was and how tragic his end came. Musically not a legend unfortunately. He left us too soon.
This song is a ray of sunshine! Steve was a ray of light!
My favorite song ❤️❤️❤️ Rest In Peace Steve Gaines, your sweet soul an music lives on. Always keepin your legacy alive. Showing new folks daily about you!!
Steve Gaines was set to take Skynard to a whole new level. What a loss.
Very talented guy people don't even know much about Steve at aleast he got to be with lynyrd skynyrd the best band ever ❤we miss him
I've tried to find out as much as possible over the years, and a few things seem to come up again over and over: his generosity, his patience and kindness with younger/less skilled players, and that he was just a really nice guy.
Crazy talent...we will never know the extent......Thank you Steve.
A very prophetic song about himself! Hopefully you found peace Steve Gaines 🙏
Steve was another major talent added to the already blockbuster group.
I was only a teenager at the time but Skynyrd is still my alltime fav. Have a great day!
If I didn't know better I'd say Steve wrote this song about me. R.I.P. Mr. Gaines you have my undying respect. 🎸
this song blown my mind.
Cut short.
"Meet Atlanta...." And then Steve launches into that super-tasty solo that still blows my mind all these years later.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is so lucky that they had him for a so short while love ya brother
Ronnie once said "we will all be in Steve's shadow one day"...
+d square I totally agree....Steve would've either gone out on his own, or he would've made Skynyrd go from awesome to unbelievably extraordinary. He had the best voice in the band and wasn't going to be held back.
Emergency Alert System US Ed king is not all that lmfaooooo
asseatinslasher ed kicks ass
Billy Joey fuck you old man you couldn’t stand toe to to me. Ed King was a fat joke, Steve Gaines wasn’t shit. And I’m here to tell you to go fuck yourself buddy!! Read this comment and literally take a step back and fuck yourself.
GalenIRL check yourself you autistic fuck
INCREDIBLE would be a f#%&ing understatement!!
Henry K i agree 110% brother!!!🦅🎸🦅
always loved this track, man skynyrd have a knack in finding wonderful guitar players
It was actually Steve's sister Cassie, who had been a backup singer with them for years, who urged them to give her brother a chance.
Verno Robinson Love a lot of great Skynyrd songs, but this one is #1 for me (maybe can't say it's a Skynyrd song if it is a Steve Gaines song)
it don't get any better than this folks ; sad he never saw 30 yrs of age ; legendary
It was my 17th birthday. Still the saddest b-day of my life.
Mine too October 20 here 1972 ,6 am ,in 77 I was 5
I was 15 and home with a wicked flu that made sleep impossible.
It's gonna be 40 years this fall, so hard to believe.
It's crazy, they were the soundtrack to my youth. Never be anymore like them.
Never again Sue....
One and only Steve Gaines!love to y'all!
Great voice. What a monster of a guitar player.
So much talent at a young age my goodness we lost a could be legend
Just heard for the first time.
Gave me chills
Awesome!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mr Gaines... I'll miss you always.
I am Speechless!!! Someone defined this union just right, Lynyrd Skynyrd & Steve Gaines the Perfect Marriage ❤️💋
What a voice!
Steve was the perfect complement to Lynyrd, the perfect trio with Gary and Allen ... amazing guitarist !!! ... Steve, we enjoyed your great talent, a short time, but what you left us was enough to fill the soul! .. Thanks Steve!
Damn!! This guy was a Super TALENT!! Beautiful voice Steve! Rest easy Brother!!
In The Sun is the best of any artist. A shame I'd never heard of him until he'd left this earth . Gone much soon. I miss you. RIP
I'm in love with this song!!! I will moarn them til I join them...taken way too soon 😣
They passed on my birthday. Shit..
The coolest man in the world ..
every member of Skynyrd was extremely talented, Ronnie wouldn't of had them if not
Absolutely! And well put....
And funny enough, Ronnie wasnt the most talented in the band. Steve was. In fact I could see Steve going back solo as he was just too bright to be in the shadow of another leader.
Hazy Sativa out of your fucking mind if you don’t think Ronnie was the talent of the band
Hazy Sativa out of your mind if you don’t think Ronnie was the talent of this band
I'm 14 and have fallen in love with steve
+Angelo Savioz I THINK IT`S AWESOME THAT A GUY YOUR AGE WOULD LIKE THIS KIND OF MUSIC ! HAT`S OFF TO YA ..............
Thank GOD! We have hope for the next generation after all folks! Welcome to real music Angelo. ;)
@@harrykadaras9459 Well said.
One beautiful man with a beautiful soul
Steerler3, I'm with you. such a talent. makes me cry when I hear his voice. So sorry he died so young, but GOD knows how things it should be!
Terrific musician. Great voice and great guitar player. Too bad he passed away so young.
Yep just like that!!
Steve was certainly One if only more time, what would or could be, We Thank you Brother for what you left for Us.
This needs to be released today.this guy was and still is awesome.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Steve is Beautiful gifts that flew off with the Free Bird and he is still with us. Just look up you may see him.
Love that voice. Gives me chills
I believe in Steve’s vision for music.
A great piece of the greatest band.
a great talent. .....we where just kids when they passed away.....
