- An opposition lawmaker, Aleksandr Dubinski, has filed a lawsuit alleging that President Zelensky has illegally held power since May 20, 2024. Dubinski, who has been in custody since November on charges including high treason, claims Zelensky's postponement of the March 31 presidential election due to martial law violates the constitution. The court will consider Dubinski's lawsuit on September 16. The opposition leader also urged Parliament to call a new election. Click to know more.

Ukrainian opposition's frustration with Zelensky's administration is not new. Back in March of this year, a French afternoon newspaper, La Monde, reported that members of Ukraine's parliament were unable to travel abroad even though they were invited by a friendly government's embassy in Kyiv, because of the ban imposed by Zelensky's administration. These members of parliament were mostly from the opposition parties. They saw Zelensky's ban as an attempt to silence opposition lawmakers, keep them out of key decisions and solidify power. Ukraine's former president accused Zelensky of misusing martial law and the war to purge political opposition.
Ukraine will not have another presidential election as long as martial law remains in effect. Is Zelensky misusing martial law for his political agenda?? Only Zelensky himself knows, but such serious accusations usually don't grow out of nowhere.
One thing that is becoming more and more apparent is that the longer the war drags on, the further Ukraine is away from its NATO and EU aspirations. If the war drags on long enough, Ukraine will become so far away from meeting the standards that it is virtually like it has signed a agreement with Russia that it will never join NATO.
