Yes, people who accuse him of being a Rule's Lawyer have never played with a Rules Lawyer. Tom asks for clarity on things, Mark clears it up. A Rules Lawyer is someone who at every opportunity, will interrupt gameplay to insist the DM is missing something and if the DM says it's not important, persists and argues.

I know this is over year ago, but it's a question I can answer. Shield is not a concentration spell, so you don't need to make checks to maintain it. It's one of the things with shield, that once a creature used it, switching to AOE attacks for the round is advisable. It also means shield stacks nice with blur, mage armour and shield of faith too! :)
I've always thought it was weird that you get no benefit for upcasting Counterspell if it's shy of the level of the other spell. If I was one of the designers, I would've made the DC 10 + Opposing Spell Level - Casting Spell Level.
There is a benefit if counterspell is equal to or exeeds the countered spells level IT just works. Untill you counterspell the counterspell with your conterspelled counterspell.

My gut says yes, because then the DC to counterspell a 9th level spell with a 3rd level slot is 19, but a 4th level slot is only 15. A happy medium might be to add the number of upcasted levels to your roll for the save, so the DC would be 19 in each case but you'd get a +1 if cast as 4th level. Narratively this makes sense, but also lowers the tension (and cost) whenever counterspell is used. RAW to counter that 9th level spell you have to decide whether to use your highest slot or make a DC 19 save. With the addition you can drop one slot and make the save with a +5 bonus, which you are almost guaranteed to make. The decision isn't as critical AND you get to save your higher slot for something epic. So that's 3 paragraphs to basically say I see OP's point, but agree it doesn't need changed.
In the phb, it specifically states that becoming incapacitated breaks concentration. Part of the paralyzed condition is that you are under the effects of the incapacitated condition.
Thematically you can imagine the trigger for counterspell happening immediately after the spell you're countering is cast, and you use abjuration magic to stop the spell from having any effect. The original caster has already completed all the components of their spell, and you react just before any effects take place. For your question, that means by the time somebody is countering your spell, you're done casting the first spell and can move on to the next one. In this case, your own counterspell. Mechanically it also checks out because the only thing that prevents you from casting other spells during your turn is casting any spell as a bonus action. That specific rule though is so convoluted and confusingly written that everybody does it differently or ignores it entirely. Hope this clears it up a little?

The globe of invlulnerability... Not trying to backseat, but thinking about using it myself. Isn't part of the description that you can't just boost low level spells with higher level spell slots, meaning that Dispel magic won't work? I understand Katie seeing nothing hurting her, then running off to hurt something else, but melee attacks are kind of the hard counter, the way I understood it, to break consentration.

Mark I agree you are just telling a story at 1:29:55 But in the process of making a story, consistency, and rules are important. We tell you with the utmost love... we can't imagine how difficult it is to DM such a complex universe, and I agree at a meta level that the party needed to be spurred to action. They eye is game breaking and really powerful, but it has to be consistent. It has to be proven faulty or limited before you can say: maybe it doesn't work all the time. Especially after it provided a linchpin for the whole campaign - most of the decisions they make from now on and the convincing is based on the eye being right about everything. Yes, it fun and games... but that doesn't mean it can't be anything more, since you showed it can. And that doesn't mean that people pointing it out are doing it in a malevolent way.
i don't know if i'm remembering this incorrectly but i think when the eye was first given it was stated it predicts potential future events not the exact events that will occur in the future, and on the character sheet the eyes description includes - "As part of the action to use this ability, you may ask a single, specific, question about your immediate surroundings, an object you are holding, or a person you can see. You receive a shadowy vision related to that question that lasts 1 minute. The vision may not directly answer the question but will be as insightful as possible. If the question cannot be answered, for whatever reason, you simply see nothing and do not expend a charge." which from my understanding quill used the eye asking a question that couldnt have been answered because 1. immediate surroundings-The question was asked near horizon. not near gust haven. 2- they were not holding any item that related to the question of the empires plan of attack, and 3. a person you can see - the question wasn't orrientated around what would happen to any of the npc's/players durring an empire attack. but i do understand how some bits and pieces could cause problems in the game because of the wording and limitations it has. because you could say "well the players and npc's do get involved in the attack therefore it should predict what would have happened. but i would rule that the future has yet to happen and they could have ended up in a situation where they weren't able to help protect gust haven. things involving the future are tricky in games because things can change the future hasnt happen therefore isn't set in stone.

Ultimately making the position of the priestes the objective truth... maybe hesper is just trolling the team and gave him that vision to make sure they won't have starbane as an ally. But still, if makes the win the had at the conference lackluster if the eye is not infailable.

Ok I don’t mind the accidental rules bending like with the sorcery points, but I do think the plane shifting to be some bs as it shouldn’t work according to marks own rules on planar magic in Aerois. Teleportation circle would work to get out but not shifting. I’m sure it will be a cool little side story but it will be nothing but a time sink for the party

Minor spoilers, and just thinking out loud here: When Aila failed the Dominate Person save, and was told to "Knock out the sorcerer", how much free will would she have had? Because technically Zarkira is a sorcerer...
That would be up to DMs discretion. A great example was on Critical Role. Someone was charmed into "attacking their friends" and the spell is described as seeing the caster as a trusted friend but the DM overruled it because the context is clear.
If my player had thought of that, and I didn't have the NPC use their action to take exacting control, and I was not at all specific about the wording, I would absolutely let that happen. It's always to be super careful with your wording, just like a devil of ifrit could screw you over with a deal because you weren't careful about the terms, it should be perfectly fine for a player to screw over an npc that wasn't careful with wording either. Also I'd be super proud of them for finding loopholes, I love it when my players try to be creative.
Don't think it works that way, he can only replace d20s, only lvl 20 clerics get to auto succeed divine intervention which Quill can't even be since he multiclassed

But in the process of making a story, consistency, and rules are important. We tell you with the utmost love... we can't imagine how difficult it is to DM such a complex universe, and I agree at a meta level that the party needed to be spurred to action.
They eye is game breaking and really powerful, but it has to be consistent. It has to be proven faulty or limited before you can say: maybe it doesn't work all the time. Especially after it provided a linchpin for the whole campaign - most of the decisions they make from now on and the convincing is based on the eye being right about everything.
Yes, it fun and games... but that doesn't mean it can't be anything more, since you showed it can. And that doesn't mean that people pointing it out are doing it in a malevolent way.
i don't know if i'm remembering this incorrectly but i think when the eye was first given it was stated it predicts potential future events not the exact events that will occur in the future, and on the character sheet the eyes description includes - "As part of the action to use this ability, you may ask a single, specific, question about your immediate surroundings, an object you are holding, or a person you can see. You receive a shadowy vision related to that question that lasts 1 minute. The vision may not directly answer the question but will be as insightful as possible. If the question cannot be answered, for whatever reason, you simply see nothing and do not expend a charge."
which from my understanding quill used the eye asking a question that couldnt have been answered because 1. immediate surroundings-The question was asked near horizon. not near gust haven. 2- they were not holding any item that related to the question of the empires plan of attack, and 3. a person you can see - the question wasn't orrientated around what would happen to any of the npc's/players durring an empire attack.
but i do understand how some bits and pieces could cause problems in the game because of the wording and limitations it has. because you could say "well the players and npc's do get involved in the attack therefore it should predict what would have happened. but i would rule that the future has yet to happen and they could have ended up in a situation where they weren't able to help protect gust haven. things involving the future are tricky in games because things can change the future hasnt happen therefore isn't set in stone.
@@Greenfire714 i agree. The issue is that the players made definitive in game decisions and will further try to convince others of the infailability of the eye. Ultimately making the position of the priestes the objective truth... maybe hesper is just trolling the team and gave him that vision to make sure they won't have starbane as an ally.
But still, if makes the win the had at the conference lackluster if the eye is not infailable.
@@kicker7955 yeah the party has been lead to believe that the eye only shows the truth. which is a fault of their own doing. they had noticed that so far all the eyes predictions had come to fruition and so this has caused them to believe all the eye sees is truth. I would love for it to be H'esper trolling/ deceiving the party!

Ok I don’t mind the accidental rules bending like with the sorcery points, but I do think the plane shifting to be some bs as it shouldn’t work according to marks own rules on planar magic in Aerois. Teleportation circle would work to get out but not shifting. I’m sure it will be a cool little side story but it will be nothing but a time sink for the party

Rules: you can cast a spell and a cantrip, not two leveled spells during your turn, as long as one is an action, the other is a bonus action.

That would be up to DMs discretion. A great example was on Critical Role. Someone was charmed into "attacking their friends" and the spell is described as seeing the caster as a trusted friend but the DM overruled it because the context is clear.
If my player had thought of that, and I didn't have the NPC use their action to take exacting control, and I was not at all specific about the wording, I would absolutely let that happen. It's always to be super careful with your wording, just like a devil of ifrit could screw you over with a deal because you weren't careful about the terms, it should be perfectly fine for a player to screw over an npc that wasn't careful with wording either.
Also I'd be super proud of them for finding loopholes, I love it when my players try to be creative.

Don't think it works that way, he can only replace d20s, only lvl 20 clerics get to auto succeed divine intervention which Quill can't even be since he multiclassed
