The 9th wonder is why the hell this and Martin's other records weren't mega hits? I grew up in the 80's and never heard of Martin Ansell. I only know of him (years after the fact) through rewatching Better off Dead. I watched that movie a few times as a kid, and always though 'Shine' was some obscure (yet catchy) Duran Duran track. It was only about 15 years ago or so (when buying an import DVD of BOD) that I found out about Martin from looking up the movie sound track. This, and Shine are easily as good as anything that was in the charts in back in 1985. I was only 7 then but I still remember. IMO this music should have been more widely played and publicized back then. It's a shame it wasn't.
Hi Caesar - have shown your lovely comment to Martin who says he’s “chuffed to bits” by it and asked me to tell you he has a lot of his recordings on his Bandcamp site @ martinansell.bandcamp.com/ - many thanks to you - Paul @ PDCMusic Uk
a lot of good music was hidden from our ears in the 80's. I was 6 in 83 and remember when Better off Dead showed up on HBO, and the music just blew me away.
@@PDCMusicUK Ok, took me a while (due to several personal reasons I won't go into) but I bought the digital download of Englishman Abroad just before Christmas (as my gift to myself). So glad I did (thanks for the tip!). It exceeded my expectations. I'm a sucker for a bass line and there were several (Starting with the opener Englishman Abroad) that had me hooked from the first few seconds. You can definitely feel Rupert Hine's touch, polishing up a diamond. It's had at least half a dozen plays over the last few weeks and is now on my ipod. Having read the notes about the production of the album, I was left feeling quite angry that one of the better albums of the 80's was effectively neutered at birth by short sighted 'Execs'. I think if it wasn't for Rupert incorporating Shine on the Better off Dead sound track, I'd probably have never heard of Martin or his music. I guess it's a case of better late than never though! Anyway, thanks again for the tip and wishing you and Martin a (belated) Happy New Year. I'll be buying some of the other albums for my Birthday!
I also discovered Martin through "Better Off Dead". "Shine" is simple, but beautifully conceived and performed. It was perfect...amplifying the movie's skiing sequence.
The information about production is wrong...The Eighth wonder was produced by Rupert Hine and engineered by Stephen W Taylor.....the B side ‘Infidel’ was produced by Me and Nick Cathcart Jones.
Hi Brian...unfortunately there is no footage from this period of my live performances. However...there is a UA-cam video of a track called ‘Flagday’ which was produced by Tony Mansfield....around 1983....and later I had another track called ‘Drum in the earth’ which was by the duo I was in called PresidentPresident...which also has a video now on UA-cam....A lot of my music is now available on Bandcamp.

This house is burning All our hands light a flame In times of trouble we our tears lost like rain
We stand, we stand so proud We stand so proud We stand, we stand so tall But we stand divided
The eighth wonder of the world Is the wonder of the world we live in... The eighth wonder of the world Is the wonder that we live together
This train is running with no driver, no tracks The line to reason must surely go back
We stand, we stand so proud We stand so proud We stand, we stand so tall But we stand divided
The eighth wonder of the world Is the wonder of the world we live in... The eighth wonder of the world Is the wonder that we live together The eighth wonder of the world Is the wonder of the world we live in... The eighth wonder of the world Is the wonder that we live together
Is there a room for our brothers For our friends and our lovers...?

What a fabulous 80s sound, brings back memories of hearing it in 85. First time I've ever seen this video though

Had no idea a video was made for this fabulous track!
Such a great song, never seen the video before, thanks for sharing. Bu the song was produced by Rupert Hine and engineered by Stephen W. Tayler.

Fantastic Martin! as an 80s kid, I salute you... This was better than most tracks coming out at the time, and there were a lot of good tracks!
So much like Duran Duran
This album would have easily been as popular as Tears for Fears, A-Ha, Howard Jones, etc if it had not been shelved.
Is there any live footage of Martin during this period? TV performances, other promos, concert footage etc. Brilliant track.
