I do both. Sometimes I use music when I am trying a new set-up, and dialing in. Once I get it. I lock it in for months. Keeps it fresh too. Not that I don’t still covet some new speakers. My Old ones still amaze me at times so I haven’t jumped yet.
I always find that in anythung in Life. Once you pick a Side you lose out what the other has to offer. I Love low wattage tube amps, but I still want some Maggies being driven by a Hegel amp. Or a Harbeth Set-Up. I only have the budget for one myself, so tubes, and single driver it is. Open minds catch the most thoughts.

There is no need to spend more money on hi-fi equipment than necessary. But after 30 years as an audiophile (music lover) it's my impression that spending more money on hi-fi equipment usually (not always) gives you better sound.

I'm in northern CA and there are 3 very reputable hi end dealers around here that i have worked with with. And each of them seem to specialize in different or work with different manufacturers. And over the years I've realized how each of them approach their products as the end all be all intended to appeal to people's egos especially those they realize have the means of paying. So ego is definitely something this industry is banking on.

      Gryphon and Audiovector?.................................
Wow, what a bad idea. You really spent more than necessary. I saw a free speaker on the sidewalk & another one kinda' like it at the recycle plant. They'd make a stunning impression.
And the local thrift has a $3 complete component system including 4ft. of speaker wire. It has cracked glass but you can find missing knobs almost anywhere.
You should just enjoy music more than ever before and be done with your "upgrades". Perhaps even a reduction of social security benefits due to such poor fiscal mismanagement & decision making?
Vintage electronics kill the Climate & Planet. It should be illegal to sell, use or transfer ownership of any non-compliant used vintage audio equipment that doesn't meet or exceed the latest "energy star" rating.

its a very good idea to approach a dealer who has
the product as a demo which is probably run inn
and then lay down the cash and borrow it for a week
and see if it works for you.

Someone has to post these opinions! Great post! I only ever started upgrading to what I currently live with after noticing various deficiencies which I happily lived with for quite some time. To keep it short, the people who have come by my home and have had a chance to sit down to be handed the remote and told "have at it however you wish", they were left stunned with the best compliment was "anyone who's looking to buy a system should hear this first, this is a reference", and all expressing things along the lines of "there's no noise", "I can tell it's loud, but my head doesn't hurt", "I can hear so much going on and it's not confusing", "I can feel the resonance of the instruments", "my hearing isn't that great, but hold on, I can't believe what I'm hearing". This is without prompting or giving any sort of heads up as to what to expect. Folks were like, what does this sound like, and I'm like "have a listen and judge for yourself". There are builds where I've made "utter crap" sound decent. The point? I put a lot of effort into things regarding the environment, my home to help the system perform its best. Too much to type here, but simply put, you'd be surprised at what you can get out of your gear by getting the listening environment "in shape". Then there's the care taken with the setup of the equipment. My wife and I just giggle and have a blast listening to music, playing games, and watching movies. At this point, we don't worry about improvements. Happy Listening!

I went from a leak tube amp (8kg) to a class A DC coupled tube amp (16kg) to a vintage Toshiba SB620 class AB (14kg) to ending up with two class D amps (0.5kg) with a tiny el cheapo tube pre amp (0.3 kg). This latest combo ($250 with upgraded op amps) sounds great and as good as all the previous ones! All of them were driving the same 3-way floor standing speaker and a subwoofer. Want to upgrade the sound: Opt for more capable speakers and a good subwoofer! So you can hear a significant difference.

      @tupuhumuhumunukunukuapuaa3093 11 місяців тому +2

Yeah, I'm not convinced of class AB superiority (its design is a compromise which takes a lot to overcome) over class D, and class A is just too hot and wasteful. I can't go back to Class AB or A, I like a comfortable room and wasting power to run the amps and the cooling for my space isn't worth it. I also haven't heard anything convincing to my ears to make me think that I should go back. I don't care how deep the main pair goes, well tuned subs in the space make a noticeable improvement. A properly timed musically capable bass shaker (ButtKicker does not muddy the sound) works a treat as well (don't knock it until you've properly tried it).

@@MichelLinschoten I am impressed how good class D chip (TPA3255) amps can sound. They are load dependent but combined with a easy impedance of the speaker, it's a no brainer. I combine it with a tube buffer to "warm up" the sound and avoid this somewhat "sterile" sound. Works great. Frequency and distorcion numbers are excelent. Only the tubes ad some extra harmonic distorcion to smooth the sound somewhat.

When I was a very young lad, my Mum, while driving me around the countryside used to ask me "what's the best automobile in the World?" and I used to answer "A Ferrari". And then she would ask me again, telling me that most people could not afford a Ferrari. I would sit there not knowing what to answer and then she would answer "the best automobile in the World is the one you are riding in, since it is the one taking you places RIGHT NOW".
Well I guess my Onkyo and Denon receivers plus my Elac Debut 2.0 6.2 and Klipsch RF-28 speakers is were it is at right now.

100% Agree, if a 25k System is properly set up and Dialed in its going to take 5 times that to see a Considerable improvement in Sound, but the guy that spent the 125k plus has Eye Candy and Bragging rights, and these Super high end systems of 500k or more sometimes add a bunch of uneeded colorization and harshness etc. - NO GOOD. If the huge dollar System is a must have and it's not putting a person into a financial hardship than so be it, but after hearing some 10k to 25k matched and Dialed in systems there isn't a big room for improvement, of course those Spendor Classic 200 s sure would be awesome!!!!!

There is definitely a level of aesthetics, personalization, and flexing, that comes with any hobby. Its true with photography, amateur astronomy, or even sneaker collecting. The key is for hobbyists to realize what money is going to "Personal taste and vanity" vs improvement/performance. After 30+ years in the audio hobby and over a decade in high end audio sales, the most common pitfall from listening to reviewers is falling in love with a product that has a fatal flaw. I saw so many customers who refused to upgrade a particular product that limited their legitimate upgrade path. "I know my SET amp only puts out 2 watts rms, but I can't bare to part with it. Now, can you help me find speakers for my 28' x 20' room with a 12' vaulted ceiling." 😂 The attachment to that products always started with a glowing review. I also experienced tons of customers who would audition a product in-store and at-home, love the sound, but feared buying something that hadn't been reviewed yet. I wish I were just making this up. My daughter started taking violin lessons recently, and I discovered musicians are just as delusional about their instruments as audiophiles are about their gear. I don't look down on audiophiles as much as I did prior.

I just want to find the best value for the money I spend my life earning. Time is the most valuable thing man can spend/waste and never earn back.
I have struggled for a long time trying figure out what speakers would best suit my small 5.1.2 system and room for both movies and music.
Since there is very few and far away places to go to and listen to speakers with different tweeters it is difficult to find the best form of tweeter/speaker.

Really ? So explain to me that virtually no recording studio uses high grade audio exotic gear to record on. Most studios have just a pair of near fields monitors that cost a normal amount of money to record with.
Matter in fact , look at Billie eilish (like or hate her music) her album won multiple Grammy awards for best recorded album.
It was all recorded in a bedroom on a simple laptop driven system finneas (her brother) explained that in detail. It was nothing fancy or expensive or even remotely exotic.
I am all for sound quality, I've sat in front of half million USD systems before (probably even more) . In my video I explain that they sound absolutely fantastic . But isn't that suppose to sound good ? I think at those price classes it's not longer about audio quality, it's about "do you like it ...or not"
You'll never will be able to convince me (with respect) that you need that type of gear to enjoy a cheap plastic disc or magnetic strip called tape . Or any format for that matter, again that doesn't take away how incredible those systems are

You said above "you've never been there " as far as higher end equipment goes.
I've had McIntosh, mark Levison, pass labs, not to mention jadis reference tubes on Klipsch la Scalas I can make this list to about 135 sets of higher end speakers I've had over the past 20 years.
I never ever, had one product perform exceedingly better or worse than the other of we are talking "high end" vs even "mid tier" gear.
It's exactly why I sold all that gear to go with a set up that makes a heck of lot more sense .
If you desire accuracy ?! Just get a very good pair of headphones, you eliminated the room congrats!
No speaker does that or remotely will do that. Cost you virtually nothing compared to the super high end branded (sorry I am honest) pretentious nonsense you see some people buy.
      100k for a turntable?!
      43k for a DAC ...
I mean open up that gear, and understand what that in reality cost..
It's just marketing really I'll stand by that regardless
