Michael, it's incorrect comparison.
DIY projects will be always cheaper only because you don't count labor time and logistics in your DIY stuff. Add them and your bike would be pricier than this one.

Ridiculous price, for half that I could build an electric mid drive bike with triple the specification, oh wait, I did.

Well of course you can always build an electric bike for cheaper than a production bike. What you get with this is a custom frame, modular rack system, Shimano's top quality drive unit, highest end electronic shifting system in the bike industry, warranty support, cell phone app and computer diagnostics that can be done at home or by a dealer, quality and longevity. The list can go on, it's a matter of preference, not everyone likes building their own stuff :)
