BIKES | a short film by Shaffer Nickel
Shot on 16mm Kodak film, Arriflex SR, and Zeiss super speed lenses.
My dearest viewer, I’d like to mention the delicate schedules of everyone involved in making this video. So many friends said no to the pulleys, levers, knobs, and wedges of real life in order to spin, tilt, and steer the equipment necessary to make this video happen. To those listed in the end credits, thank you for your friendship and time. And to Zoe Marie Mendler who made the title design for the series - thank you so much, it’s perfect. I know this is a ‘Shaffer Nickel’ video, but in this case ‘Shaffer Nickel’ is only a phrase used to reference the whole of a large group that really cares about being alive and doing whatever necessary to hold on to some of these memories.
Happy summer, hope you like this. Pt.2 is starts filming this week.
what was this filmed like it looks amazing!!
UA-cam is lucky to have this quality of a content in its platform.
this guy wants to smash
incredible.
So cool to see creators like Gawx in these comments
Pedalling upside down with the big shadow on the grass was so beautiful and rich with feeling.
I’m working on a project about bikes right now and it’s gonna take some real restraint not to try to lift shot ideas from this. Lovely textures, sounds, and compositions
Love to see UA-camrs I like engaging with other UA-camrs I like.
The sound design is amazing! This is so special, man.
It’s comforting to know that the bike i had stolen from me was never really mine to begin with. Thank you
That ending got me 😅 What an absolute work of art
Thank you for this ode to the humble bicycle. This is a beautiful piece of art.
My current bike is a big red 1970s Raleigh Super Course 10-speed road bike, I affectionately call "Big Red." I bought it at police auction (ACAB) when I started grad school. Six years later I've added a hitch for a kid trailer and a rear baby bike seat. It is my multi-purpose commuter/errand-runner/recreation bike and I love it.
I love this so much, plus somehow you made me nostalgic for biking in the suburbs
So inspiring that you did this all on 16mm film!
Dude this is so good. The attention to detail. The storytelling. The fact that you shot it all on film. Looking forward to part 2
Wow, this was beautifully captured and told. I loved the perspective shift at 1:45 from you to the bike. 👏🏼
What I liked especially was the promotion of what's called "normalized cycling". No bike helmets, regular clothes, and not riding in fear. Even when I'm doing the full road bike thing, there's still some normalized left. Keep it up.
This was terrific! I can tell you spent a looonggg time on that sound design because its so good.
Oh to have this mindset again, when a bike was just a 'bike', & all that mattered was the destination being destined with 2 wheels. Consumerism has swept me away to care about chains, headsets, etc. Hope to shake this concern one day & just ride for the ride again. Love this film. Cheers.
I love the idea that we are the small piece in a bike's big life, it's duty is to help make these short lives a little easier
Your channel is so underrated for what it is. So many camera channels just capture random footage, but this tells a story while looking amazing at the same time. It is actual art.
This was 100% here and now. The amount of love you put into this is felt on the viewing side. Excited to pick through again to try and de-code some Shaffer magic. Incredible.
Phenomenal stuff, the fact that your art is just available for free like this makes me grateful for each upload
Excellent cinematography. I'm here from your BTS video and a major fan of the idea of shooting videos in 16MM. (Never had the opportunity to try it myself so this is beautiful and tapping every feeling I wanted to experience) Also, incredibly jealous of your Bolex. I had the chance to have a complete Bolex with multiple lenses and full case and paperwork for $400 and I didn't have the money for it. It will FOREVER be the camera that got away from me. Love this. Keep up the great work!
This was such a piece of art!!! ❤❤❤❤
The master at it again.
Made me feel the way I felt about bikes as a kid. Thank you.
These videos bring me joy
It's so crazy how familiar and at the same time different real film feels like. 🤩
Yes yes 1000%!! Man, this is exactly what we’re missing. How beautiful to share stories of everyday life at such an elevated level. This ain’t UA-cam new wave this is ShafferWave. The internet healed a little when you started sharing vids. Thank you man
So cool and beautiful ✨, love the dialogue at the end 😂
this is mesmerizing😮
Watching this to procrastinate my bike ride
this is phenomenal.
Loved it ! Nice writing and gosh, it feels soooo good to enjoy film ! No shitty rolling shutter, nice shadows and colors… I love your series, good job !
this was awesome, you've created something very special here.
Beautiful work! Film forever
Love this! The ending in my favorite ending to anything EVAH!! 😂
Art. Man I love this so much. Like the other guy said, UA-cam should be paying you to make this.
Beautiful video🙂↕️
Good one
Beautifully-shot, expertly-edited, heartfelt little joke at the of the day.
This is very good. Fantastic work
Bikes are sick. Bikes with friends is even sicker
What a massive W for the algorithm. Amazing work, mate
Incredible production, hope this video will get as much views and attention it deserves
This is amazing! I love everything about this.
“You do things and don’t watch. Then all of a sudden you look and see what you’re doing and it’s the first time, really.”
happily waiting for more stanzas
Love this work! Thank you to everyone who is working on The American Stanza!

Pure friggin art
This is so freaking beautiful!
Only the OGs saw the video before this one where Shaffer introduced the concept behind "The American Stanza" - and boy did he make something beautiful
gonna go thank my bike after this one.
A love letter to bikes. Subscribed.
Thank you!!!
You bring mundane topics to life. Love it!
I don't understand why you don't have a million subs. Awesome film
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
This is art
Beautifully shot, great score, and (hopefully) as you intended, a video that made me appreciate the present and reconsider the mundane. Bravo
commenting and like this ish so the YT algorithm would pick this masterpiece up!
funny how this video pops up right when i was thinking about fixing my bike.
This is just awesome, everything about it
This is awesome!
Storytelling at its finest
i think about this film every two weeks or so
Shaffer, phenomenal as always. Those are 100% the same wheels.
Hahaha! Perfect outcome, Genius. Beautiful Shaffer, thank you! Forgot to send you my 100ftrs! Shipping them out on the next opportunity
The whole video is sick, but the transition at 2:20 is masterclass. Well done sir!
Amazing work! got goosebumps multiple times.
Normally, I like my movies in one aspect ratio start to finish. But this film was so well crafted I must forget my pre-existing biases and simply praise your hard work. Bravo.
Light yourself on fire with passion, and people will come from miles to watch you burn
-John Wesley
Your fire burns so bright Shaffer. I’m just here for the ride, Keep it up man
Hands down the best UA-cam video I've seen in a minute!
man! I love the perspective from where you're telling all kinds of stories.
Much love and appreciation for the art you're creating!!!
great video. perfect depiction of bikes as almost living things
Absolutely loved everything about this!
dude, this was excellent... the editing was great and all but the WRITING - the ending in particular - is what really got me. Can't wait for the next one!
The photography of this video is top notch. Straight out of sundance
So good and really beautifully shot
Let’s go!!! Great video.
. . . Lucky enough to be adopted by a bike. Beautiful.
I genuinely admire how good you are at just doing your thing, regardless if it "makes sense" or not (it always does). Incredible as always, makes me wanna ride my bike as strongly as ever before. Proud of you, man.
Most anticipated stories of 2024. Absolutely loved the first one, can’t wait for each to become my new favorite tale.
It's SO unique, well done BRO
I'm urrently on the lookout for good storytelling because i feel overflown by just good visuals and bad storytelling.
THIS is pure storytelling. Your great visuals are underlining your formidable storytelling. It's an instant follow for me. Wil defininitely look more into your channel, for sure.
This is a gem, I smiled and laughed
Love the film. Amazing work
pure art.
Surpassed all my expectations, as always. Can not wait for the next instalments in this series. Such an eduring inspiration to me.
Dude you are my new favorite youtuber.
Beauty, stoked for pt 2!
This is awesome! Definitely inspired me.
Great video! I bought a beautiful 3 speed bike during a 5 week visit to the States back in 2018. Passed it onto a friend when I left, and he eventually got rid of it! I probably think about where that bike could be ‘right now’ more than I should!
Wowww, very nice!
We grew up poor. I had to make a bike out of parts I found. One day in 7th grade I went to the fence where I locked my bike up to ride it home and somebody had stolen my bicycle lock. Right now I live in a small one bedroom apartment and the last time I counted there are four bicycles inside my apartment. Where I live it's very unpleasant to ride bicycles and not safe and when I go to bed the bicycles just sit there and don't do anything but I constantly find myself thinking about moving someplace where I could ride bicycles everywhere all the time so maybe they are not just silently sitting there after all.
With this kind of bike poetry you must have some Dutch dna in your vains. Congrats on another awesome film, i love it. Greetings from a bike lover in the Netherlands
Made my day - beautiful
damn this shit is beautiful, I never expected something of this format to evoke so much emotion. Thank you so much for putting this out there in the sea of brainrotting content we have these days, I need more thought evoking long form content like this.
so French new wave of you to upload such masterpiece to the internet
Way too good!!
i love that you called bailey up and said "i need you to bike into the air in some grass" haha. the 'bikes have you' concept makes me think of some lyrics from my favorite Turnover song All That it Ever Was "take what you've got, give it away. nothing belonged to you in the first place. if they're all us and we're all them, then it's like trading between your own hands." excited for what's to come with the rest of the stanzas😌🚴🏼♂
Amazing! ❤
