I think it's funny that of all things, British mustard is what they choose to make spicy. 😆 And to be clear, in the USA if it's plain yellow mustard, it's just vinegar, mustard seed, and maybe some turmeric or paprika or something. We have tons of variety though, spicy brown, honey mustard, dijon, stone ground, etc.
Yellow mustard (at least the French's brand, which is the most popular store bought yellow mustard in the US) contains onion and garlic powders as well.
In my experience, most Americans including myself has specific uses for each mustard and like most or it's yellow French's or nothing... example , corndog, hot dog or Hamburger is yellow mustard but for coldcut subs spicy brown is the thing 👌
@@alexlail7481I love using honey mustard (Wendy's especially has the best) on spicy chicken sandwiches, but I'll rotate yellow and horseradish for my sausages and burgers
I am proud to say that there's hundreds of types of mustard in North America. I looooove some yellow or honey mustard on a Philly pretzel, to die for. We have spicy, sweet, savory and even some crazy expensive mustards. My local Wegmans sells at least a few shelves of mustard, some imported from different countries. I will have only honey mustard with chicken tenders for life!
Omg I remember getting a hot sam pretzel at the mall, when they existed, and walking around shopping while eating a salty pretzel. The essence of a 70's kid's social interaction...
I've had some really good ones, but I honestly think the cheap corndogs you get at a fair/carnival are the best. They aren't the actual best taste/quality wise, but the distinct taste is nostalgic and reminds me of the fun setting.
There are three major types of pretzels, in America. The most common is the regular snack pretzel, which comes in various shapes (pretzel-shaped, skinny pretzel sticks, large pretzel rods, pretzel bites, ...). In some cases snack pretzels can be made hollow with some kind of filling in the middle (e.g., peanut butter, or cheese). Soft pretzels, like you had, are the second most common type, and then the third are hard pretzels, which are always pretzel shaped and are intermediate in size between a snack pretzel and a soft pretzel. Then in addition to pretzels themselves there are various pretzel-themed things, e.g., pretzel buns, pretzel bagels. Hot spicy mustard does exist in North America, but it's not the default. Various other gourmet mustards also exist. But if you just say "mustard", Americans think of the regular yellow stuff.
If you put cheese sauce on the pretzel and ketchup on the corn dog….why not taco sauce or salsa on tacos ?? You would like them so much better with sauce !
If you ever want to try the original corn dog, go to Pronto Pup in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. As a bonus, the Oregon coast is home to amazing dairies and the local cheeses are to die for.
Even if I move to the other side of the globe, I would always crave Tillamook Sharp/Extra Sharp Cheddar. I like cheeses from around the world, but Tillamook Cheddar is hands down the best.
@@lilliputlittle Don't put Wisconsin cheese out of the running. You haven't lived until you have had a nice juicy bacon cheeseburger with 17 year old cheddar.
Corn dog tip from a pro for next time, it's better to dip in ketchup and mustard rather than putting it on the dog itself. Also you can slide the stick out and cut it up for bit size shareables
The key to hotdogs is that they're either all beef; in which case you just need a little mustard and onion, or sauerkraut, or they're mystery meat, in which case you can't put enough condiments on them: chili, cheese, anything.
You should stop at the Minnesota state fair which happens at the end of August through Labor Day. It’s a foodie paradise with everything from roasted corn on the cob to Corn Dogs and Pronto Pups. Check the fair out online to get an idea of how large and popular the fair is. Only Texas’s fair is larger because it runs a bit longer but the Minnesota fair grounds are shaded and easy to walk.

Totally off subject. When I was young, in 1975 my family went to see my uncle & we went to a restaurant that had Huge bird cages & probably 16-20’ ceilings. I’m not sure I remember this clearly. Do you know of a restaurant like that back then? I want say it was at the foot of the Golden Gate or the Oak Bay bridge? I’m not sure if my memory is correct.
at the pool in our town, we had a little food section, it was maybe in 2005 or so when i was young but getting out of the local pool and getting a pretzel with the cheese was the best tasting thing ever!!
Soft pretzels! Soft on the inside, a bit crispy on the outside. Must be served warm with cheese sauce. Most are okay. But if they are fresh, they are sooo good!
Soft warm pretzels are soooo goood! The cheese is also good with a little cinnamon and sugar mixed in with it to dip your pretzel in. Another good combination is sweet pickle relish mixed in the cheese to dip your pretzel in. We sell these at our Jr. High and High School Football games. They are always a hit along with Nachos and little mini cups of frozen pickle juice. ❤
Wow! I can’t believe you are so close to home! I live about 2 hours away and have been to the same exact zoo. Feels like a celebrity sitting in my same seat. So cool 😎 👏❤️
Corn dogs are regional as well. The corn breading can have different variations. My favorite has a honey batter, some have no sweetness to the batter at all and for mustard, it has to be a brown spicy mustard for me :D
A true corn dog is a hot dog surrounded by cornbread. My recommendation is to eat it ONLY with mustard. I prefer the spicy brown mustard (not hot) just has a spicy taste. Ketchup is faux pas on a corn dog. Some will add a little butter to the cornbread, then add the mustard. Cornbread is designed to eat with butter. The large pretzel is very popular in the USA especially in Pennsylvania. I grew up in Pennsylvania and we only put mustard on the pretzel. Nowadays I prefer a good beer cheese. The next time you come to the USA, you should consider the east coast instead of the west coast. We have done trips on both. You may consider using AMTRAK to use a train for your travels throughout the USA.

I live at the extreme northwest end of the city, so I'm pretty far from the zoo. I'd say my neighborhood has the best Vietnamese sandwiched at Mister Bahn Mi at 3605 Balboa Street and the best (and, unfortunately, greasiest) fried piroshki (I recommend the perfectly seasoned beef piroshki, beef and cheese piroshki, and cabbage piroshki - potato's okay, but you might consider the cheese ones a little too mild/bland) at Moscow and Tiblisi Bakery at 5540 Geary Blvd and the best classic mille feuille (though they call it a Napoleon which, technically, would be topped with icing instead of whipped creamed FYI) at Schubert's Bakery at 521 Clement Street. I'm sure you've already moved on from San Francisco, but you can look these places and their food on line for reference and for dishes you might like to try in other cities you visit or recipes to try.

Hot dogs in a jar seem to me to be an excellent way to leech a lot of the flavor out into the liquid. So unless you are making hot dog soup . . . I'm not sure a zoo will have the best corn dog. When I was a kid in the 70's we put mustard on our big pretzels. Cheese sauce is recent.
Just squirt the mustard or ketchup into the paper dish and dip your corn dog into it, it’s a lot easier and less messy that way.
