They started murdering humans. No indication in the first game of them being anything other than brutish creatures. Then its all "well actually Saint-14 was a story told to scare eliksni children". Like ok all of a sudden they're humanised? What about the Splicers and all the houses before? their lairs? no kids? no inkling of anything like how they are now?
