What Mr Samdey is doing is breaking brand new ground for recreation in Cambodia. His efforts are to be aplauded as camping, and particularly backbacking is not a traditional Cambodian pass time. What must be undertstood about Cambodia is its horrid history and its this new generation of young Cambodians, being those born after the UN intervention of 1992, that paved the way for peace and a market economy, that the youth of Cambodia those under 27 years of age are pulling this country into the 21 century. Mr Samdey needs the support of all foreign campers and backpackers to help him introduce the skills and products into Cambodia that foreign campers and backpackers enjoy. in !992 this country was just a failed Communist State that suffered massive genocide and is the heavist bombed country in History. Look up the bombing of Cambodia on Google. Until just the past couple of years its only people like Mr Samdey who have been brave enough to overcome past intimidations to venture out intothe Cambodian countryside to camp. Cambodia has increible pristine hiking and camping prospects that few countries in SE Asia can present. Hiking and camping here is like anywhere, follow common sense and awareness. Listen local advice and enjoy the friendliness and kindness of the Cambodian people. The Khmer language is a very old language and modern consepts like camping are not a component of the vocabulary as camping is not a traditional passtime.The closest word available In English would possibly be adventure in Khmer, but of course that word has many applications and is not usually associated to define camping. If one listens to Mr Samdey introduction he uses the English word camping to define what it is he's describing. This just goes to demonstrate what he is up against, in not only promoting camping into his culture but also technical langauge. Please don't hold back on assisting him in English, even though the majority of his introduction is in the Khmer langauge, he probably reads English better than he speaks it and he'll understand what your telling him.
