Allan, darkness is the absence of light. The internet is a dark place for sure, but people like you, Dry Creek Wangler, Pints with Aquinas, Bishop Barron and a few others are shining the bright light of Christ is this dark world. I know you have helped me deepen my faith and relationship with the Church. You’re making a difference. I want to encourage you to keep shining the light and spreading the joy of the pipe! If this channel only brings one more person to the Lord it’s worth all the effort. God bless and your family!
Northern Catholic here. You sir, have said so much in this video that I connect with. Excellent reminders and wisdom. Appreciate all you do for the ytpc! I now have to pick me up some Granger.
Any man who smokes a pipe, has a library like you have behind you and reads philosophy is a man I can respect. I have read Aquinas Augustine Cicero and others. I know, the quiet contemplation of a good smoke. A good pipe and a good book, I have learned more then any online experience. Well said sir.
God bless you and your family Alan. I turned my back on an academic career almost 25 years ago as I knew in my heart that manual work would bring me more pleasure. Follow your heart and your god. I might be poorer financially, but I am at peace.
May our lady cover you in her mantel of protection and continue to guide you. I am a highschool teacher of religion. schools keep transfering from books and pen and paper to computer and more and more tech. I feel it has ruined them. They cant think, cant analyze an argument. Noise nosie and noise. The screewtape letters mentions that noise is the weapon demons use. I say that as one raised in it. I never learned any real practical skills, teaching about God is my only money earning ability. I would appreciate prayers as well. I need my job but often find it jard to stay faithful in the messaging. Its should i bring up this topic i may get complains and get let go..im a single dad so need the job. Anyway God bless you and all who see this
I agree with your thoughts about the internet. What a total distraction it is. My wife and I have had the same conversations many times. I will say, you are a special individual. The younger generation needs your influence / insights. I am a teacher by gift of God and that is a hard path to attempt to walk away from, as I have tried to do in the past and found myself most miserable. I believe a more physical presence in teaching is where you are being led to, if you are not there already. I'll be praying for you my friend.
Wow. Just wow. I am 28 and when I try to talk to my friends about my dislike of the internet and what it's doing to young people, they think i'm stupid. Hearing you say this just confirms that pipe smokers are exactly the people I relate to the most. Like you said, the pipe itself is not responsible for the lifestyle, but it compliments it very well. I am yet to discover a pipe smoker that i dislike. I live in the UK but I dream of a life in rural america. Knowing real people, having real conversations...
I’ve found that when I’m smoking my pipe, it’s the only time when the world seems to stop, and I’m able to live in the present moment, enjoying true leisure
I love music, smoking a pipe, and the relaxation it brings. Walking, I listen to music playing from my phone into my earbuds. I also find that with no music simply walking with nothing other than the activity around me and thinking...that quiet time I use as meditation and relaxation. It's good to disconnect from the firehose of the internet. Focusing on one's self is healthy and revitalizing. Thank you for your taking time to make your informative and useful videos!
it is impossible to project the energy of the soul required for real teaching without being in the presence of the student. teaching is more absorbed through presence than through lectures.
Great video. I have just read "The Intellectual Life" for the second time. The first time I read it, I was very distant from God, but I read it because a friend recommended it to me. It is funny, that now that I am closer to God, going to the church every week, the book had so much more meaning to me. Greetings from Brazil.
I’d love to see a video regarding how you manage smoking indoors, like how you keep things clean or carpet unburnt or stale/unpleasant to a minimum. Love the content!
Dr. Harrelson, first I want to say that I will indeed pray for you and your family. I totally understand the weariness towards the internet and particularly online teaching. Despite my school being so horribly liberal and anti-Gospel, I am very appreciative that they so strongly emphasize an in-person education. And it's ironic and perhaps hypocritical of me that I rail against the doctrines of my college while also appreciating the manner in which these doctrines that I abhor are instilled into students. My freshman year here was at the back-end of covid, when mask mandates were still in effect. Had I been a couple of years older and gone here during the height of the pandemic, I would've lost my mind. Perhaps I'm losing it anyway! I, too, have an increasing disdain for the internet. There are times when I so deeply wish to be able to throw my laptop, my desktop, and my smartphone out my window and never turn one of these contraptions on again. But, ironically, here I am, typing away, leaving a comment on a UA-cam video. Speaking for myself, I have even become irritable with the noises of the modern life. The clicking of my keyboard, the whirring of the fan in my laptop, the buzzing and humming of the air conditioning, and the rumblings and roars of particularly obnoxious motorcars. When I'm walking on campus in the middle of the day, about 10 in the morning or 2 in the afternoon, and there is no one around and no cars on the roads, I hear some birds singing and smile. Even the cawing of crows is more pleasant to my ears than the sounds like tearing cloth that come out of some of these vehicles nearby! Just like you, I am ready for spring, and I am ready to go home. I am very excited for it to be warm enough to go outside, fire up my pipe, and enjoy the sounds of trees in the wind, birds singing, squirrels barking, and be far away from the contraptions that make life so convenient and yet so miserable.
I know this is an older video, but I pray sir that everything is working in your favor. I hope you excuse myself being a Yankee, but I consider you a brother in the Lord and Leaf. You’re a true gentleman and hope your videos continue, they bring me great enjoyment and education 🙏
Sir, I wanted to thank you for all the wisdom that you have shared with us on this channel. I recently got into cigar and pipes and am thoroughly enjoying delving into this world through your channel. I look forward to a future conversation between you and Mr. Dewayne Noel of Dry Creek Wrangler School. I hope that I get to shake your hand one day, share a pipe, and wisdom. God bless you and your family and I hope that all is well! Saying a prayer for you and that you find a job that is more fulfilling than your online teaching job.
Just found your channel and I can't stop watching your nice videos man - I appreciate it a lot how you talk about smoking. Thank you for your work!!! Greetings from Austria!
My local grocery sells Prince Albert and Carter. I finally bought a tub of Prince A to try and being the first codger blend I was impressed. For the money ($30 out the door) I will be marking this as a daily. All my fancy tins will last longer and be more of a treat now!
You are a brave soul, Allan, and you do it boldly, honoring God, and to His glory. Keep the Faith, and we'll keep you in our prayers. Smoke your pipe in Peace, and confidently but humbly listen for God's answer(s) to your prayers. 🙏
The older I get the more I appreciate silence . I enjoy it along with my pipe and really enjoy your videos and content. Cheers from Horry County SC. ✌️🇺🇲
I often feel the same way about the internet and social media. I mostly only get on to see what a select few channels have to say. Channels like this that i stumbled upon during dark times in my life. Then I'm reminded even though all the bad, there still is a little hope out there. "Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand.” Thank-you! I wouldn't know where to begin to tell my story or how my life has changed in less than a year the good and bad. I feel I have been changing for the better.
Thank you for the video. The silence is amazing, I have just started smoking pipes and have invested quite a bit, because I want to. I enjoy my pipe or should I say I enjoy the silence that goes with the pipe. I always feel I have to do something, I always feel I have to go go go. I have tried just sitting still and watch the cars go by and just listen. But now the pipe has helped just stop and hear the silence. Thank you!!!!
Many blessings for you and your family during this contemplative season of reconciliation. I deeply enjoy your sharing and thoughts of the Devine. You strengthen my armor and bring light to my heart.
You certainly have my prayers, Dr. Alan. May our Lord direct your footsteps. Thank you for the admonition to spend time in silence, especially during this season of Lent. The Stations of the Cross have been for me a great source of thoughts for contemplation. Blessings on your Lenten journey!
While the internet is a double edged sword, one edge being indisputably a detriment to civilization, the other edge allows people such as yourself to cut across great distances to pass on pearls of wisdom to those without the luxury of direct access to your presence.
God Bless You and your family Alan, and prayers for you. I really enjoyed the intellectual life when I read it. Silence and the understanding of a contemplative aspect of life is sorely lacking today. Thanks for the reading.
My dear friend, as a fellow devout Catholic please take my advice and tread carefully. Though I am new to your channel, I saw a previous video of yours where you speak of the trials with the Kentucky government. These are small stakes. I heard you speak of Hilaire Belloc so at the very least I’m delighted that you are aware of his work. Some of his books can lead one to identify the powers at be. You are a smart man. I am praying for you, from the depths of my heart. You have an electricity about you. You have a presence. God bless you sir. I will pray for you, which has proven in my real experience, to be the most generous thing I can offer. With love, good sir.
Beautiful work in that book. After working a full day and grabbing the baby when I get home so my wife can go do the same, it is not until late at night when he goes down and I have a moment to myself. I load a bowl and head to the shop where I smoke. Albeit not in silence, as I’ve found watching your videos and smoking to be a some what therapeutic experience. And there’s the occasional fuss from the baby monitor of course. But I must thank you. I treasure these videos and insights into things I would have never seen otherwise
Very well said, Alan; especially the part about the internet & internet education. I did my MS almost solely online. It was effective, but I feel I missed an important part of the teaching/learning experience. I sent a few prayers in your direction!
Brand new to pipe smoking. Want to contemplate this reading the next time i fire up a bowl of my recent country squire grab. Appreciate it and God bless. Good luck to sir
Those were powerful words. I’ll have to get a copy of that book. I can also recommend The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise by Robert Cardinal Sarah
Thank you so much for this topic, it is the essence of a spiritual life and for me as yourself the cherished time I spend with my pipe. That has been one of the reason I smoke a pipe and each time I sit down to light a bowl I pray to the Lord above to quiet my heart and soul that I will hear what He has to say to me. Since I retired a year ago it has become the most precious time of my day. It gives me the time to reflect, remember, and receive all that God has done in my life. Great message today ! Also Allan I will be praying for Gods direction for your academic direction. God has gifted you with the skills, education and talents and I trust He will use them in a very purposeful and useful way. God Bless you and your Family.
Fantastic video. I needed this in this hectic world we live in. I also am in a job I no longer like and congratulate you for having the courage to make a change. I will pray for you and your family. Writing a book is a great idea. I think it would be great if you did more videos where you talk about history while smoking a pipe (like the Bremen Pipe Smoker). I also have a passion for history and think you would be successful in passing on your passion to others. Whatever you decide I hope you find your God given purpose and appreciate all you do.
God could have spoke everything into existence in one day or one hour or less. The fact he chose to take a week with a day of rest is a lesson to all to take time doing things that are worth doing.

Agreed. There is a ton of garbage on the internet, naturally.. but there are absolute gems of good ol' wholesome content. The Pipe Cottage being one of them. I am atheist and don't see myself any other way, but I agree with many of the Christian beliefs. In general, it seems like Christians are good people.
Brazilian catholic pipe-smoker here. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
God Bless this man.

Northern Catholic here. You sir, have said so much in this video that I connect with. Excellent reminders and wisdom. Appreciate all you do for the ytpc! I now have to pick me up some Granger.

I love your mellow life brother. I'm trying to do the same thing. Stay happy.

The Intellectual Life is life changing. Such a powerful book. 4:38
it is impossible to project the energy of the soul required for real teaching without being in the presence of the student.
teaching is more absorbed through presence than through lectures.
Saying prayers for you and your family! Keep up the great work!
I sure hope to meet you some day Dr. Allan.
As the Catholic Church teaches: man is made to contemplate. Silence is fundamental to reflective contemplation.

My friend, the Intellectual Life was a mind opening read. Realizing the depth of the actual vocation changed my perspective.
Yes sir, a deep bowl and a seat properly placed as we contemplate life. What a blessing!!
im smoking my pipe now just listening to you. its relaxing and good information. im 48 years old and im trying to learn.

Just found your channel and I can't stop watching your nice videos man - I appreciate it a lot how you talk about smoking. Thank you for your work!!! Greetings from Austria!

I'll be in that area next month! My family is from Horry County.
Small world. I’m born and raised in horry county right here in Galivants ferry! Just joined pipe cottage social app and love it so far!
I'm sending you prayers - it's much better than the internet or maybe it is the real internet! :)

Said it before ill say it again would love to sit and talk with you for awhile Dr

Great book - The Intellectual Life!
God Bless You and your family Alan, and prayers for you. I really enjoyed the intellectual life when I read it. Silence and the understanding of a contemplative aspect of life is sorely lacking today.

This is Fred. Will keep You, and Your Family in Our Prayers.

Happy IPSD!
your spirit is remarkable sir! thank you for all you do
Dr. Harrelson
As a woman I don’t smoke pipes or cigars.
A cup of hot tea is my equivalent.

Don't know if this was already said but today February 20th is International Pipe Smoking Day! Enjoy your pipe smoke.
you need an ASMR video of you just smokin' a bowl. I'd share one with you.
Spectacular
Planning any events in Central KY this year?
God could have spoke everything into existence in one day or one hour or less. The fact he chose to take a week with a day of rest is a lesson to all to take time doing things that are worth doing.
We need a pipe appeal collaboration. I don’t think he has a face
Sounds like you have a cage full of budgies - do they like your pipes?
I like listening to you, but my favorite videos are the ones where you're actually puffing on a pipe.
