I can certainly relate to the calming effect that comes with the ritualistic preparation of a bowl of tobacco. I almost instantly feel better, and more relaxed.
Well! Alan, I made a comment last night about my Mothers Catholic faith and the lack of my own, this kept me up all night a thinking. You and your family seem to be so content with your lives, I feel that I am missing something here, also some one I know and have a great deal of respect for is a Catholic, so I have decided to go and have a word with him . I am now 77 years old and need something other than just my pipe for solace , as it were. I will let you know how i get on. All the very best to one and all.
Armenian Catholic Rite here. Came back to the faith in 2022 after being away 46 years. I hope you find the peace that I have found. God bless and keep you!
I’m currently waiting on my first pipe in the mail. I’ve been enjoying cigars for several years but since starting a family, I’ve realized it’s much more difficult to devote the time required to enjoying a good cigar. My hope is that a corn cob pipe might provide the opportunity to devote an hour or less to much needed enjoyment and reflection. I enjoy your channel and am thankful that you introduced me to the likes of Malcolm Guite. God bless you
@@gib2263 I indeed enjoy my pipe on occasion. I stay pretty busy and haven’t had a smoke of anything in a couple weeks. But the pipe has taken the place of cigars for now
Quoting Sir James M. Barrie in his book My Lady Nicotine: A Study in Smoke: “The glory of existence became a thing to speak of. Men who had hitherto concerned themselves with the narrow things of home put a pipe in their mouths and became philosophers. Poets and dramatists smoked until all ignoble ideas were driven from them, and into their place rushed such high thoughts as the world had not known before.”
9:20 that doesn’t sound silly at all. I have a “tea station” in my kitchen with mostly Chinese teas. I don’t do the teabag-of-dust-in-the-mug tea. There’s a bit of prep involved in making a great tea. I love the ritual. It’s very calming and soothing. I love my tea, and I love my tobacco pipe and I love the process of prepping both.
I have found myself in recent days, attracted to things where the process is ritualistic. Smoking a pipe has a ritual leading up to and beyond the first light. Making coffee has a similar process. Get the beans, weigh the beans, grind the beans, brew the beans, and then enjoy the beans. This is also true with Asian Tea ceremonies. Very ritualistic.
You are a great guy Alan , not just because you smoke a pipe {although that does help, my little joke). What I wish to say, is that my Mother was a Catholic, but some how I could never myself get my head around , having a faith, but I wish I could do, as it gave her, such strength.
We absolutely love the coffee & all you do on your social media. Absolutely love your family. My honey and I can’t get enough of you and Dry Creek. We love hearing your birdies in the background 🦜🤗🙏🏻☦️
Alan, a fantastic video as always, thank you! I have enjoyed watching your two latest installments with a bowl of squadron leader and my morning coffee, here in Lancashire, England. Looking forward to your next offering, God bless.
Re: German The "o" in Wolfgang is pronounced like the first "o" in "Ontario". The "a" is pronounced like the "a" in "after". Schivel- is pronounced like shee-val; -busch is pronounced like bush.
You obviously appreciate the value of inspirited writing. Sadly at present, the attention span of most is limited to what they can read on their phones within a matter of a few seconds. And what we are unfortunately amassing is the dulling of intellect and disregard for creative expression. I agree with your assessment on the merits of that book and nice Stanwell you have there. Thanks for sharing.
That is a very sweet Stanwell you got a hold of! 👍🏻👍🏻 Love it! I’ve heard people (including myself) use the word “meditative “ when describing smoking a pipe and the preparation of a bowl of tobacco. I agree!
Jimmy Aiken? at least from what I’ve seen he’s the most knowledgeable apologist for Christianity and more specifically Catholicism. that guy is just a walking encyclopedia it’s amazing. I can’t wait to tune in because I’ve been waiting a long time to learn a little bit about Jimmy and his pipe smoking.
I have recently gotten into pipe and cigar smoking as I let go of the cigarette. Your channel is amazing and I love your stories! I also love your accent. My daddy is from southern Mississippi and lives in North Carolina. I grew up in Virginia. Your accent reminds me of the old Carolina/Virginia accent and the whistilin' S reminds me of my Pawpaw and my great uncles. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and tid bits of wisdom. You need to do another video with Dewayne Noel! Hope all is well and God bless!
One thing I’ve noticed when it comes to pipe smoking, is there’s allot of people who try it, but a little more than half that try a pipe keep up with it. I’m concluding that the continuation of a pipe smoker is in direct correlation to the IQ and patience of the individual.
I enjoy your excitement with reading that book and thank you for sharing the chapter you read. Looking forward to you being on ( pipe and tobacco talk) podcast next month. They are one of my go to podcasts every week.
This is the second time I've had to remove my ear buds because I thought my daughter's cat's had dragged a bird in the house while watching one of your uploads! 😅 ✌️❤️🔥✝️
Been to that bookstore. Moon pies upstairs? Me and my oldest went their while rest of my younguns and wife did an 8 hour hike. 4 hours up and 4 down. Too much like work for me?
I don’t dry a lot of my tobacco’s, but if I do I love just seeing it laying out there on the desk knowing it’s getting better with every moment gone by. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks a bunch 💛👏😉Alan,u’re awealth of inspiration& information, best greetings from Norway & myself. Pipe collector( 80+pcs.)& tobaccos (aging them)as well+ growing the plants& making smokable product(a lot of work though🥸😱)aspbergers helps!me there.😜😊

It’s a taste of freedom.
Pipe smoking should always be a kind of Gentleman's habit, no matter how much money you have. That's the difference to addiction. Greets from Germany.
You're so right. That's why I like pipe smokers, they're generally cerebral deep thinkers who pride themselves in being a gentleman - a real man.

I'm not catholic, I'm Orthodox, but I just want to say God bless you and I hope you find the Lord. The heart is restless until it rests in Him.

Congratulations on acquiring your first pipe! The corn cob will definitely serve for a quick yet, enjoyable smoke. God bless you!!! 🙏
One month in. Curious how it’s going?

Great quote..... But Im certain it was C.S. lewis who said that.

As a german native speaker I love to immitate that kind of southern accent keep up the great work, Sir!

Another fine pipe accompanied by words of wisdom.
I love your joy and exuberance in this video! I shouldn't have watched it prior to my nightly(ish) rosary with Bishop Barron...
Enjoyment of a clamming Bourbon whiskey can be a good thing.

I too have an old Stanwell. I Love it! 1968 was an excellent year. Really dig your channel; great content.
Dang, that is one hell of a home library.
Smoking a pipe and its preparation is soothing and ritualistic like the Japanese tea ceremony. Best regards Ron

The quotes from the book are perfectly said, and I could agree more 👌🏼👏🏼
I love Stanwell pipes. The 83 is one of my favorites. Anyone else?

This is a random question but when I smoke a few of my pipes they make a "whistling noise". Do you know how to fix that problem?

Every time you say 'briar" I have a chuckle. In parts of Ohio, "briar" is a rude word - it's basically another way of saying "hillbilly."
