About your statement on the RE remakes replacing the OGs in the cannon: capcom has stated many different times that these modern remakes are their own thing. Besides the 2 remake doesn't really have a 100% cannon story.
I still think it is so strange that the canonical ending isn't achievable in-game.

Rebecca needs to go to the mansion to get home so you could say Chris but also in the original she isn’t wearing Billy’s necklace so does that mean Jill’s is cannon?
@@sammoore2779 The canon ending is that Chris, Jill, Barry and Rebecca all escape the mansion together. You can't achieve it as the player because the four characters are never together in either playthrough.
Canonicity in Resident Evil games with multiple endings is best described at schizophrenic.
Technically, however, there aren't a lot, thankfully.
@@ChiefMedicPururuYeah RE1 and RE2 are the only two games in the Franchise where the canon is made up from parts of two realities/timelines, RE1 canon is parts from Chris and Jill's Scenarios, RE2 canon is made up from parts of LeonA/ClaireB and LeonA/ClaireB, though ClaireA/LeonB has the most canon elements
My head-canon is that it went down like this:
All 4 members get into the mansion, Barry, Jill, Chris, and Wesker. Barry and Jill go down to investigate the dining hall, Chris goes on his own to check around parts of the mansion for bravo team members, and Wesker disappears without anyone knowing where he went.
Stuff Jill and Barry do:
-Jill encounters the first zombie, runs from it, and has Barry shoot it in the head with his magnum.
-Jill finds the shotgun and has Barry save her from becoming a sandwich after grabbing it.
-Jill plays the piano for the piano puzzle.
-Jill and Barry do most of the mansion puzzles to leave the mansion.
-Jill and Barry leave the mansion first.
-Jill is the one to find and use the first crank.
-Jill and Barry encounter Plant 42 in the dormitory. Barry saves Jill with a flame thrower.
-Jill and Barry find a battery and go back to the courtyard to use its elevator.
-Jill and Barry head down to the mines and find Enrico. They also encounter the Spider Boss and are the ones to find the second crank.
-Barry betrays Jill and leaves her to die to Lisa Trevor.
-Jill escapes Lisa Trevor.
-Jill does the Lisa Trevor boss fight soon after and spares Barry. Barry and Jill subdue Lisa Trevor. I say subdue because Trevor is not dead yet.
-Jill and Barry head down to the lab and meet up with Chris and Rebecca. There all 4 of them learn about Wesker being with umbrella.
-Chris, Jill, Barry, and Rebecca go and confront Wesker. Barry betrays Jill again by pointing his revolver at her and Wesker shoots Rebecca in the chest. Wesker shows off his creation to Chris and Jill. Once he shows them the Tyrant, he turns around and pulls his gun on Chris and tries to kill him but Barry shoots Wesker before he can as Barry had a change of heart. As soon as Wesker gets shot, the Tyrant breaks through his test tube and impales Wesker, thus combining the two outcomes.
-Jill and Chris fight and beat the first Tyrant boss.
-Jill, Chris, Rebecca, and Barry all fight the final Tyrant boss. Jill is the one who blows the Tyrant up while Chris sends out the flares to alert Brad.
Stuff Chris and Rebecca do:
-Chris finds Rebeca and Richard after he leaves the group to investigate the mansion.
-Chris finds the serum and saves a poisoned Brad.
-Chris is the one to encounter Yawn. He subdues the snake with his pistol as Jill had already taken the Shotgun.
-Chris takes some hits during this fight and has to be saved by Rebbecca.
-After Rebecca saves Chris, he tells her to stay in the safe room.
-Chris finds Forest.
-Chris is the one to head down to the crypt and find all the masks. This means Chris is the one to fight the Crimson Head.
-Chris goes back to Rebbecca and they leave the mansion for now.
-Chris does not encounter Lisa Trevor here. Chris does find a Colt Python that Jill skipped over, though.
-Chris and Rebecca go around the Dormitory and are the ones to encounter the sharks.
-Chris and Rebecca are saved by Richard who gets eaten by a Shark.
-Chris and Rebecca drain the water and electrocute Neptune together.
-Chris takes Richard's Shotty.
-Chris and Rebecca encounter Wesker and learn he apparently is such a good shot that he can shoot flying bees with no issues. Wesker also tells Chris and Rebecca to check out the mansion one more time.
-Chris and Rebecca return to the mansion and fight Yawn again.
-Chris and Rebecca go down to the altar, the place where Jill and Barry fought Lisa Trevor. Chris does not fight Trevor as Jill and Barry already defeated her.
-Chris and Rebecca head down to the lab and encounter Jill and Barry.
-Same shit happens again
-Chris fires off the flares and Jill kills the Tyrant.
Wesker does all the shit he does in Umbrella Chronicles.
That's how I imagine the events went down. This took a long time to write and I'm probably misremembering some of the game as it's been a while since I've played it but I hope this was an enjoyable read!
Sounds good enough, while in The4thSnakes videos his vision is that Chris did most job, in yours it's Jill. But it just the way the game was made, it's gotta be either Chris or Jill who do all the job.
I wish that if Capcom ever, ever want to modernise the 1st game again, unlike re2 remake and re3 remake, they wont do such drastic changes, mansion layout, a few puzzles but nothing major, even keep both campaigns. But have the Defenitive story as unlockable compaign or game mode, in which events are finaly shown the way it cannonicly happen.

I find it funny how it's been 25 years since the Resident Evil series began and we still don't have the actual canon version of the very first installment.

Capcom loves doing weird shit with endings. Dead Rising 2’s “True” ending isn’t canon, for example.
I've always thought that the Jill sandwich thing has simply been a meta joke after the first game. It's like a wink to the audience, and doesn't necessarily have to make sense for a particular character to be saying it.
Yes, my headcanon is that the classic RE dialogue is how the story was told by Barry to his family.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the line differences between the original and remake. They most likely just amount to a difference in translation. Meaning, both versions of RE1 are canon.
And they still haven't revealed canonically what goes into a Jill sandwich.

The S.D Perry novel gave a good take on who was where at what time.
But either story assumes that the other possible protagonist got locked up in the lab right away, so it can't make sense.
@@Poet482 Have you read the RE novels? They're basically the same timeline but with added spots here and there. Including carving the log that is RE games into "cohesive" totem poles...if that makes sense.
EDIT: WIth the ability of being able to look back on the franchise I would say Chris should be the one that gets locked up as that would lead nicely into RE5 with him saving Jill.

I have not read them, but I agree that Jill's version of events seems a better canonical fit, seeing as her interactions with Barry are much better than Chris's with Rebecca. Barry has a legitimate character arc with conflict involved whereas Rebecca just whines incessantly and resolves nothing. I don't think she was even necessary to kill the plant, if I recall correctly, she just happened to make that process marginally easier.
@@Poet482 I suggest reading the books or at least the one based on RE 1. I can't remember how good they were as middle school me did get bored at parts but that could've just been me then. If I recall correctly though they should use the book as a blue print should they ever make a faithful film adaptation of RE 1.

I always find odd and infuriating that capcom refuses to nail down a timeline for these events. I believe there response to fans asking if RE3 remake was the new canon was just nah they both happened at the same time. As if thats even possible on its own
Imagine a RE0 remake with bonus campaigns detailing Bravo Team's Adventures. Enrico, Richard, and Kenneth survived at least a day before the events of RE1 so seeing what happened to them would be interesting.
Yeah I think even Forest Speyer survived until the late afternoon/early evening hours of July 24th, a few hours before the events of RE1

I always think that , to make some sense for me:
-Chris reached the mansion first with Wesker, and he told him to search for others.
-Barry and Jill came later to the mansion and Wesker tells them that Chris is missing.
-Rebecca stays with Chris and they save Richard but dies anyway.
-Jill is with Barry and they never met Chris again since he is with Rebecca and , maybe, they never cross paths?.
-At the end, Chris is captured and Jill rescues him, Rebecca is doing other stuff, Barry performs his double betrayal , but either the Tyrant is released and fought earlier by Chris or is fought by Jill with Barry.
-All escape together.
-Wesker never mentions Barry in Umbrella Chronicles since he tells the story and any mention of Barry would mean that he is dumb for letting Barry betray him and ruining his plans like "yeah , i can kill your family" but he is betrayed anyways and nothing happens.
Funny, RE2 also has contradicting continuities. Capcom has been saying Claire A, Leon B is the canon story but they also say it was Claire that first encounters Birkin in his G-1 form which CAN'T happen in Claire A, Leon B.

Well, let's assume that, somehow, it is possible, and that would be the only difference, because Capcom bla-bla. Honestly, we currently have a lot of games with wacky continuity. I'm not surprised.

Yep, it's always bothered me that Resi 1 doesn't have an actual in-game ending that supports the series canon. But I think, in some retrospective way, this allows us as players to enjoy playing multi facet story routes of the game and encourage us to subjectively interpret the canon events.
One reason why I like the novels is because they at least combine both of the scenarios at once.
Tho Wesker's death in it ain't even close to like canon.
@@ChiefMedicPururuNah in the S.D. Perry RE1 novel Wesker wasn't "killed" by the Tyrant, but was killed by a pack of Chimera's which occurs at the end of Jill's PS1 RE1 campaign which is non-canon

It appears that some of these evidence just so happens to come up _after_ the release of the first REmake and it gives out that the devs probably didn't had the ironed-out storyline in time yet (and have to say, it WAS what a REmake should be unless there are obvious problems that needs to be handled).
Though, have to say, I could still kill for a fleshed-out REmake 1 of both of their stories being all together to have the ending we never had in 25 years.
I would say Chris campaign is canon mostly because of Wesker stuff. Its a main rivalry of the series, so it make sense that it all started in RE 1 with their direct confrontation. Also Wesker never goes after Barry (at least I can’t remember that happened) and Wesker type of villain who would try to avenge himself in situation like that. And I believe Barry has more chances to get out from the mansion on his own than Rebecca.
Also gameplay wise: Chris has more structured way of walkthrough without shortcuts, so it looks like Chris campaign is intended way of playing the game.
I don't know why the sandwich line is so iconic.

Every line in RE1 is iconic.
The line is so bad it’s amusing.
In the original Resident evil, the dialogue is very cheese and poorly done, one example is when Chris meets Rebecca in the piano room and she says "It´s me Chris", while he responds "It´s that you Rebecca?". A lot of lines are like this but Barry has many more like the "I HAVE THIS", and "The master of unlocking". It was in a time where voice acting was really bad and the translations of the scripts were awful, but remembered for its hilariousness.
Wtf, I'm surprised no one ever mentions the Resident Evil Archives book by Bradygames (yup, that company who used to make strategy guides), they have a pretty cohesive way of telling how both characters worked at the same time independently.... except in the final moments, I think they couldn't think of a way to make it work no matter how so they closed it in a ambiguous way with a "Everything was over after Brad dropped a RPG"

Considering Jill has the Rocket Launcher and the Tyrant (rather than Nemesis) as her hypers in MvC2 while Chris didn't get either in MvC3 after Jill's moveset was revamped, I'd say it's more likely that she canonically gets the rocket launcher.
My headcanon has been Jill gets the shotgun, Chris helps Rebecca and Richard, Jill finds forest with Barry and dedicates her time to the caves and gets both stone and metal objects so when Chris came back from the residence, and Jill does the brunt of the lab before being captured by wesker and Chris finishes up the lab
Considering Chris is the one Wesker hates the most, I'm inclined to think his campaign is the canon one (mostly) with some parts of Jill's campaign happening that don't conflict with Chris's.
I just finished Both Jill and Chris's playthru on the Resident Evil HD Remaster on my Series X. Man was this game so good. Every room in the Spencer Mansion along with the Residence and the Laboratory had creepy atmosphere. This game is a masterpiece. I have never been so thoroughly disturbed by a game world. You enter decrepit hallways and into dank rooms that show signs of people slowly becoming zombies. The peeling wallpaper, the bloody handprints on doors. The broken glass and items/clothing strewn about with newspapers on beds that show signs someone was vomiting blood everywhere as they turned. Just creepy as hell.

Regarding the showdown with Wesker at the end, my head-canon is that Jill and Barry reach him first, and (per Wesker's order) Barry ends up taking Jill to the cells where Chris later finds her. Then, Chris and Rebecca's confrontation with Wesker happens as is.
As for the final Tyrant fight, my head canon is that all four survivors are there together. Plays out like Chris' campaign (to follow on from what I said above about the Wesker scenes), but Barry catches up to them on the heliport, and helps them against the tyrant (maybe even directly saves Jill a few times, to make up for his betrayal).

Resident Evil is a very difficult game in trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together especially the original trilogy.

It would be neat if we got a remake remake of this game that has a canonical story that actually makes sense. Fact of the matter is it's impossible for one story to be canon over the other because as you said in this video Both Rebecca and Barry disappear in Chris' and Jill's campaigns respectively.
That games story is a mess. And it really should’ve been changed when they made remake. They also should’ve changed the story to take into account re0. And how rebecca had been changed into a badass who fought a tyrant by herself.

If there is ever a remake of this remake there has to be a version where the canonical ending is achievable even if it’s just gonna be like Chris and Rebecca in the cell or Jill and Barry in the cell.
At least then all four are in one ending

I find it kinda bullshit that Rebecca did encounter those infected bugs on the train during RE0 but in the remake she never brings up the fact that she has delt with something like this before
For the original, it makes sense, since RE0 wasn't a thing yet. But REmake, yeah.
It's funny to think that according to Resident Evil 0 Rebecca gets to the mansion after she and Billy kill a sentient opera singing T-Virus infected leech that somehow developed human intelligence and the ability to shapeshift into James Marcus.
I noticed the line I have this was changed to I like the buddy system we have here in the remake.
I believe the closest Canon playthrough you can do in RE1R is
- Play as Chris
- Save Rebecca from Hunter
- Save Jill
- Escape with Jill, Rebecca and Brad

I think all the events happen but Chris gets separated at the beginning which is how he meets Rebecca. During barrys betrayal he locks her in the lab later sometime after they both arrive at the lab.
Wesker and Chris were likley alone one on one. Remember the tyrant stabbed wesker and barry didnt shot him in the original. Chris stops tyrant the first time. Goes and saves Rebecca and Jill.
But its Jill who gets the final shot of the tyrant.
Jill forgives barry and all 4 escape.
Thats how its always been to me.
Resident Evil 1 is like Persona 3 where it is really unclear about what actually, canonically transpired during the events of both games, since there's a lot of options and potental for missing events. It really becomes a nightmare for future canonical entries, because you have to make assumptions or have things be explained so vaguely that all potential versions of events are possible. It's really strange.
Huh? It is pretty clear that Social Links were maxed canonically and The Answer happened.
I like to think the Barry lines referenced by other characters is just Barry retelling re1 to make his jokes better.
I figured whichever areas had the most going on would be more canonical. Especially with Rebecca saving Chris from Plant 42 & him telling Rebecca about Richard's death.
I just believed Chris was in Courtyard, met Rebecca that way. Jill and Barry in mansion. They all seemed to be in different places at different times. Jill finds out Wesker sets up the team. They all meet up eventually and get the heck out.
If that's the case. Then I'd like a play through as Chris trying to get in the mansion another way. That would be cool.

I consider umbrella chronicles the definitive RE1 story tho it's not as memorable as the original ps1 and the gamecube remake. Because technically trying to piece or change some events up without changing the actual story wouldn't make any sense.
But then again Capcom has always been bad at writing the lore of the series, Just be thankful this isn't Kingdom Hearts because oh boy that is a rabbit hole I do not wish anyone to go deep into.
In my head cannon… Chris story is cannon… Barry was rescued by Brad before he picked up Chris jill and Rebecca. I just imagine he was setting in the cockpit next to brad.

So in one timeline it’s Resident Evil as Jill, Resident Evil 2 as Leon A, Resident Evil 3 and so on until it leads to Resident Evil Revelations 2.
In another, it’s Resident Evil as Chris, Resident Evil 2 Claire A, Resident Evil Code Veronica and so on, but no connection to Resident Evil Revelations 2 at all.
I do think Wesker ends up fighting Lisa in the Rebirth mode from Umbrella Chronicles mainly because Barry after the Lisa fight in RE1 says I don't think that things really dead and with the Lab scene I think both scenarios happend but in different times like Chris and Rebecca go down their Wesker shoots Rebecca then shows Chris the Tyrant but instead of releasing it he locks Chris in the jail giving Rebecca time to exit the room and set the self destruction off then Jill and Barry head to the Lab and their scene plays as normal but then when Wesker gets back up after getting shot he then let's the Tyrant out and does his little oh it's perfect thing from Chris campaign then Wesker gets impaled Jill defeats the Tyrant in the Lab she frees Chris from the prison Rebecca meets up with everyone Jill is the one that goes to the roof and calls for Brad since Chris Ladys first line is mentioned again in Umbrella Chronicles Umbrellas End mode then on the roof Jill's gets knocked out by the Tyrant Chris fights it Brad drops the rocket launcher then Jill wakes up and uses the rocket to kill the Tyrant and then yeah end scene tho that's just what I think anyway.
I kinda go with the Wii game with all 3 find rebbecca or they split and chris finds rebbecca and they all regroup at the end

It's rather funny that some of the "clearest" pieces of evidence for whatever happened in the original game ares *still* just callbacks to Barry's dad jokes. To make matters even worse, that pachinko game scene might simply be a reference to two of Jill's supers in _MvC2_ rather than anything actually canonical. Shrug.
Honestly, at this point I would be surprised to find out if Capcom itself even knows what happened in the first game. I could easily picture them bungling any officially released timeline as much as the official _Legend of Zelda_ timeline by Nintendo was apparently decried for being nonsensical when that got released.

I read them back in the day and do, in fact, plan to make an Adaptive Difficulty about them. It's mostly scripted, but I'll need to revisit them for some fact-checking first.

My problem I had with them is they are very flat despite trying to add characters to the characters which in themselves are kind of flat. The appeal of the RE series is that we don’t know much about the characters we play as because we experience the story along with them. Hence why they are hard to adapt.

While it does still leave out some details and is made for fun, I feel TFS' Resident Evil: Abridged has a pretty good way of explaining some events if you look at just the scenes, such as having Jill encountered Wesker first, but Barry's betrayal has her taken to the cell where Chris then rescues her, or that Chris got separated at the start and got into the mansion from a different room.
Just my take, though, I'm sure there's also a lot I'm missing/forgetting.

Out of the 2 best endings. I'd have to say Chris' is more appropriate. (Both playthroughs are amazing. I prefer Jill's. But by this games logic, only 1 could actually happen)

I always love when somebody use the term "canonical" as an adjective instead of "canon". Oh yeah, that feels good.
Canon is a noun! It means a set of works of fiction that shares the same narrative universe. Nothing less, nothing more.
And consequentially "non-canon" is actually meaningless, since every single work of fiction exists in *a* canon.
Of course it's acceptable to use "canon" as a verb to mean "part of the main, officially recognized canon" or "sharing the same canon as the main body of work", with "non-canon" being the opposite, but I can only accept such a usage if you understand and are aware of all this, and most people aren't.
One strange thing I noticed is that the rocket launcher is often associated with Jill rather than Chris. She gets it as a hyper combo in MVC2, and she gets it as a Hero Art in Teppen, whereas Chris typically doesn't.
Also, not sure if considered canon, but Barry's appearance in Mercenaries 3D also corroborates referencing the RE1 classic Barry lines. It only became relevant to canon by Revelations 2, where they've simply doubled down on the idea that Barry just loves making lame dad jokes, even if no one else is around.
I think the SD Perry novel framed the Jill sandwich line as a dumb joke to break the tension since Jill felt physically sick after almost getting crushed. It's a good fit for him.
RE3 Remake Jill's profile says she's the one that killed the Tyrant and REOutbreak in the Hospital Scenario you can find Chris had rib injuries in the medical files meaning he's the one that got koed by the tyrant when it first popped up and seeing the original intro of OG RE3 Chris was holding his ribs getting off the chopper.
Wut? Chris wasn't in RE3 (besides a cameo in a ending epilogue).
Resident Evil Chronicles shows the entire canonical story, while Resident Evil 1 in both the original and remake (mostly the remake in this case) shows just the gameplay aspect which his separate between two characters (Chris and Jill)
Chris is the main protagonist being the fact that his Tyrant cutscene with Wesker in both Chronicles and Resident Evil 1 remake is the same where Wesker is impaled in his abdomen by the Tyrant while in Jill's story cutscenes, Wesker is impaled in the back by the Tyrant.
also, in Resident Evil 1 regardless of whether you play Chris or Jill you can get save either one of them when near to the end of the game after dealing with Wesker and the Tyrant in the lab. so again, it's just separate gameplay aspects.
None of the endings for Chris and Jill are canon, however there are canon events in this game here they are
1. Wesker injects progenitor virus into body before releasing tyrant.
2. Chris or Jill learn Wesker Is a traitor
3. Wesker releases Tyrant and it turns on him seemingly killing him.
4. S.T.A.R.S ends up fighting Tyrant and kill it and escape with Brad Vickers in helicopter
5. Wesker is revived and tries to steal umbrella data and tyrant data but fails
6. Wesker needs to escape Spencer Mansion before it self destructs
7.lisa Trevor is still alive and challenges Wesker before he can escape
8. Wesker defeats Lisa and manages to escape
All these facts are canon but none of the ending you get are canon, it's still a great game to play though 👍
Wesker injects it after. Remember birkin injects himself after being shot. The mutation for the viruses seem to happen after the person is dying or died.
How about RE2?
If the remake is canon, Leon A, Claire B, since Leon still has the knife he got from Marvin in RE4R, and 4R's intro uses footage of Marvin from Leon A.
Classic RE2 is Claire A, Leon B
This is one of the reasons how the original Resident Evil 2 was a big step up compared to Resident Evil 1.

If we’re talking about the original re1 but REmake all the way.
The point is there are some canonical issues with this game.
For example you won't see jill chris rebbeca and Barry leaving the mansion at the same time out of all different endings which IS the cannon version.
But looks like you cant say anything slightly negative about re1 remake because some old boomer will take it as an insult to his entire family and starts shitting on remake 2 and 7 for no reason.

to me re 4 was a soft reboot
Before Vendetta came out, I just assumed Jill was the way to go and Chris was captured. Since Chris was locked up, he never found Rebecca and she died off screen in the Mansion.
After all we never seen or heard from Rebecca since the events of RE1. Meanwhile, Barry made a cameo in RE3 and made a full return in Rev2.
Well, Rebecca had filed a report on RE0 in the N64 version of RE2, and REUC confirmed she survived.
