Moog keyboards will make you question all the time you spent learning to play bass guitar. Moog bass notes are not plucked or slapped, they emerge from the ether and envelope your ears in creamy, chocolatey goodness.
Lol they really do make some of the most amazing bass sounds. I will say I still find a lot of use in using bass guitar for certain more "mean" sounding parts, but honestly most simple bass parts sound better with a moog, maybe ran through some light saturation
It makes sense that this sounds so accurate, given that Trent uses Moog stuff the most/pretty often. Archetype of a synthesizer is a fun interview to watch, apparently Bob Moog came backstage to talk with him once?
Raleigh show in 2000. I sat a couple seats down from Bob, who danced throughout the show. I'm not one for getting autographs, but I asked him to sign my ticket stub (the only thing I had on me) annnnd he signed the Bojangles coupon on the back. I didn't have the guts to ask him to sign the other side. When the show wound down, I helped show him and his wife to the backstage area. The whole band came out to hang out with him, and Charlie brought his theremin out to get it signed, and as soon as it was, he said something like "Well that one's retired now." It was cool watching stars get starstruck. I wish I'd bugged someone to get a photo, but I'll always have that signed ticket stub I guess. That and my Sub 37 :b
THANK YOU for using your ears!! It's about time a *real* musician did this without half-assing it in any way. Even more important than being sonically accurate- it is musically correct!!
Thanks for the kind words, and for watching. I have been trying to recreate this sound for a while, and it finally got somewhere with the Sub Phatty. Yes, it is definitely missing some delay.
@@benjoray Listening even more carefully again I believe I'm hearing some (sine?) LFO quickly but very gently affecting the pitch- perhaps only on one side. (probably left) I will test it out later! Edit: it might be "wow & flutter" from Trent's tape machine too but it sounds so consistent that an LFO seems more likely, though.
Hell, I literally just ran across this and it made me a very proud man. Don't you love that moment when the right adjustment evolves a step more. I'll be sharing and kudos to you!
your a bad-ass for even attempting a Trent Reznor NIN tone pre-set...rumor has it that bass tone in that song was made using a synth called the Prophet V but I'm not entirely sure
I would actually recommend the subsequent 25 instead. The keys are much nicer to play on. The duophonic capability is great to have, as well as the increased headroom. If you’re trying to spend less though the sub phatty is a good choice too.
Straight up perfect. I got close with my Model D. Funny thing is I read an interview (I think on Sound on Sound?) where it stated he did the baseline with an akai S1000. Owning one myself, I think it could have been possible but imo it had to have been done on a moog
The knob positions you see are what make the patch. The key to the wah effect though, on this synth at least, is the portamento and key tracking. There is also no modulation, pretty simple patch.
Do you know what creates the LFO/filtering effect during the break of "The Perfect Drug"? I don't think it's in the official music video, but only the single/David Lynch film version. It has this rubber band descending sound that I'd love to know how to recreate.
Hi, very nice sound. And I love NIN. I noticed you had all melody triggered. Could you give me the rudiments? Is that a midi controller? Is there a daw into the process?
It’s an Arturia keystep, which is a midi controller with a sequencer. No daw here; just the synth and the midi controller to sequence the notes since the Sub Phatty does not have an in built sequencer.
Purr Snickety Unfortunately I no longer own the Sub Phatty. The settings in the vid is the patch. You can try to pause the video here and there to get the settings.
Bendz2 is there a way to record that sequence playing it live instead of entering the notes and the rests one by one? Sorry to bother but I own a keystep and a sub phatty too and I find that video and your nin sound very close and cool!
Unfortunately, real time recording is only possible for an existing sequence. So...you can replace notes live in an existing sequence, but you can't record a new sequence live. The sequence you are hearing in the video was done step by step. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.
Only wish there was an envelope filter on the velocity like on the Mu-Tron III (though in his case with a sag due to drained battery...) I wonder if your Moog has CV to modulate the filter cutoff.

Very well put
my whole life trying to get good a bass trying to find a nice timbre, but there's no better bass than a moog.

This bass player agrees

Yep, really want to know how that conversation went.
The synth is actually a sample called Circular 2 from Rarefaction's A Poke In The Ear With A Sharp Stick vol. 2

@@DJAutism1 true
Someone else said it, but I’ll say it again. You not only nailed the sound, but you played it perfectly as well! Other people fuck it up
nine inch nailed it uwu
yes, people often get the ending notes wrong because its not a typical scale
This is the proof why I love synth fans so damn much. Truly impressive mate!!
most accurate
You made this sound better than most videos I’ve been seeing.

Did you by chance write settings down... wondering how close I can get on the sub 37.
I'm feeling called out
Clearly you haven't heard IAmKawehi's version then o.O Missing out...
Man I love watching people discover these little bits that make songs so special. This bassline is gross and groovy at the same time.
Hell, I literally just ran across this and it made me a very proud man. Don't you love that moment when the right adjustment evolves a step more. I'll be sharing and kudos to you!
Takes me back to '94.
Best closer bass line on UA-cam
Why does this not have more views?
Too good
Pretty close. There’s a subtle slapback delay that really elevates the effect in the original.
Congratulations on the accurate sound. I am trying this on Subsequent 37.
your a bad-ass for even attempting a Trent Reznor NIN tone pre-set...rumor has it that bass tone in that song was made using a synth called the Prophet V but I'm not entirely sure
Damn, this is awesome! I've been thinking of adding a sub phatty to my kit for a while, in a weird way this helps my decision

@@benjoray Yeah I've also been looking at that as well (and drooling over the 37), it'd mostly just a price thing for me. Thx for the advice
still love this sound!!
Nailed it!!!
Now can you please let me take a screenshot of all your settings lol

betcha was on a minimoog
Blueshifter here in the comments found out it is a sample. The sound itself however could’ve been done on a moog for sure
This is so Closer
Can you please make a tutorial on how you use your sequencers to control the sub phatty
Moog Sub Phatty has cv in. So it can take the cv out of the keystep.
Dude, it's amazing
oh wow this is awesome man!!!
I could listen to this beat for HOURS.. Iv always felt it needed to be louder and longer on the NIN track
this is amazing
This is so damn cool
Dope synth for a dope bassline
sick dude but cmon... we need that kick and spritz in there xD
Nice! love that small sequence
Seriously badass!
using exactly what he used. Moog synthesizer. Pretty great
Thank u. It is an excellent timbre
It's funny how they put a typical funky riff on a big fat rude synth and made it metal/industrial/electronica. Awesomeness.
Whoever thumbs downed this obviously has no clue about accuracy
mooooooooooooooooooooooog , thanks , this sounds great
whats the notes? I can never get the very last section right lol also good job on this it sounds like a studio isolated track
Good job. Nailed it
Nice, how was it programmed?
The knob positions you see are what make the patch. The key to the wah effect though, on this synth at least, is the portamento and key tracking. There is also no modulation, pretty simple patch.
definitely had to sing along!
Spot on!
So gooooood
The synth is a mad scientists instrument
nice!

2:45 mins into the following video;
"Lost Highway Soundtrack 03. The Perfect Drug"

@@benjoray many thanks for the explanation!
First time I hear it exactly the same, what are the notes?
Fucking awesome.
Not 100% positive but I believe Trent used a Moog Prodigy during this era so the tone makes sense.
Awesome
Best one by far
Biblically accurate
think you could share the notes being played? having a hard time digging it out by ear
I need this instrument
Nice! You should get a desktop evolver to go with the moog. It’s what I did with my ms20. You could destroy.

Csn you please send me a photo of your settings? I just bought a MOOG Grandmother and I want to learn to play this really bad.
Purr Snickety Unfortunately I no longer own the Sub Phatty. The settings in the vid is the patch. You can try to pause the video here and there to get the settings.
Sooo siiiiick
Damn that is pretty accurate
YEAHHHHH
It it is close but the album tone has a bit more "quack" to it.
I have the synth that was used to make the original bassline
Fuck yeah!!!
That weird noise could never be a hit song!
Heeelp meee
I broke apart my insides
Close but not Closer
Hi, how did you stored that sequence in the keystep? Via editor or via step sequencer?
Step sequencer

Really the only thing missing is the awkward sampler pauses.
was it phat ?
no it was sub-phat
yeah
👍❤️
would you be able to recreate this one a Subsequent 25 or 37?
Both the subsequent 25 and 37 are based on the sub phatty, so yes I would imagine it can be done.
What bank and preset number you use what were the settings

HAHHA!! YESSS!!!!!!
