I finally worked up the nerve to replace my laser, which went okay except the drive made a terrible noise afterward. After many attempts to figure it out I finally noticed the ribbon cable was just barely touching the disc (even though I matched up the line like you recommended), and that was the source of the noise. Turned out spinning it with my hand with the magnet on it while powered off was all I had to do to see it. Would never have done it without your guidance, Steve, thanks! Unfortunately a couple other things are still out of whack as a result of the many times I've dismantled and reassembled the thing, so I think I need to watch a couple of your videos one more time (maybe including this one).
Thing 1: Oops, forgot to reconnect one bluetooth antenna wire. Thing 2: My drive hasn't worked quite right since after the first time I opened it for cleaning, eject always gives me a triple beep and the rollers roll too long (disc falls on the floor if I don't grab it first), never figured out why, but I just noticed the two switches here look different from mine, where the tiny lever is missing from from the rear one. Always figured the second switch was some kind of sensor that didn't need to be physically actuated, but I must've broken it by reinserting the plate with the arms in "disc in" position, so the part of the arm that activates the switches was sitting on top of them, breaking one when I tried to force it to sit flat without knowing what it was caught on. It's not enough of a problem to justify paying $11 for a new motor, and I'm sure it's not possible to buy just the switch anywhere, and it's hard to think of a repair for such a tiny piece... but I want to try anyway...

I left my PS4 sitting idle for a year with a disc inside. Now when I turned it on, the disc drive made strange sound and wouldn't take in the disc after I managed to eject it somehow. Looking for a solution on youtube I found this channel and I'm glad I did. First this channel helped me to open the playstation and gain access to the optical drive. Then came the issue of drive itself. Everything looked fine, no button broken; no roller dislodged. I was about to order a replacement disc drive but happened to land on this video as a last try. This video explains the drive's working so well that I was able to figure out the issues. There were two. 1) The "disc inserted" state of the drive presses the two switches in the back. Since the drive was sitting idle in hot->humid->cold weather throughout the year (so were the switches in pressed state), I suspect the constant pressed state affected the conductivity of switches' internals. So even when the switches were released, they wouldn't register as open. I mitigated it by manually operating the switches a few dozen times. 2) I also noticed in the video that there is a white vertical part near the switches that moves back as the rollers roll the disc in but in my drive it didn't move back that far. It looked like there was some state inconsistency between different parts of the drive. The lens/back-switches were set on "disc is present" state but the white vertical part was set to "drive empty" state. I fixed it by combination of manually pressing the rollers assembly down and winding the manual insert/eject screw to bring all parts in single state, i.e., "drive empty" and it all started to work next time I powered up the playstation. Thanks for this vid. I've been stressing out lately with the PS5 if I want to do it vertical or horizontal since I've always had horizontal disc-reading devices, but the PS5 looks better vertical. So it helps to see how securely the disc drive holds discs.

thanks for the upload man. i bought a ps4 slim with a non working disc drive and found that the two little silver switches on the rear left were damaged. the scuff on the left side of console tells the story. knowing what to look for is a time saver. thanks again.

Thank you. I finally found out why my PS4 Pro is good at reading disks horizontally but not vertically. The magnet was the clue. My desk was not level. I was worried about replacing the disk drive, but the problem was much easier than I thought. Thank you very much.
Great stuff. IMO, the ps3 super slim is king Kong of all time, build quality and optical drive. Enjoying my new ps4 slim as I think its disc drive is better design than my xb1
Thank you! Think this helped me solve my problem! As you said at the end with the laser trying to detect the disk but practically if it’s bad or the disc is then it will pull an error code up! Believe it was ‘CE-30005’ for the hard drive, went through the system deleted everything did all trouble shooting and even bought external drive and still had problem of not reading physical discs! So led me to believe after researching and thanks to this video that it’s probably the disc drive (more specific in my case the lens). I’ll try to buy replacement and see if it works. 👍

Hello, I believe my switches in the disk drive don’t work because when I try to put in the game disk, it doesn’t even start to pull the disk like if it doesn’t know it’s even there. Is there anything I can do? Plz help😅
My drive doesn't eject the disk, i can hear it trying to push it out but doesn't come out. I removed the disk drive and tried to see the gearing, all seems good. After giving the disk a push, iI tried to use the screw to eject it and it was a success. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem, I still have to disassemble and teach the drive to physically push the disk out everything fine i need to change a disk. Any suggestions related to cleaning rollers or years or maybe a spring.
Mine was doing this too (That's the reason I went looking for this video). 0:35 to 0:42, when he's moving those black levers and they spring back, that's the mechanical portion that assists the drive in ejecting. My spring on the back there had come off. Reattaching that solved the issue. Your issue sounds the same so I would start there with that spring.

Steve, I am so freaking glad that you put these different videos up. I opened my PS4 slim a week ago to clean out the fan. I was surprised to see that it was almost mint after a year and a half of gaming and VR. Anyways, when I was putting it back together, I noticed a rattle, but since I couldn't see anything, I just went back to putting it together and proceeded to play games for a week. Now, yesterday I got my copy of Judgement and today I decided to swap discs and start it up. The old disc came out, but the new one wasn't having it. So, I opened it back up and found a spring magnetized to the little circuit board that surrounds the laser. It had apparently popped off when I took the metal shield off last week. I looked all over online for high definition pictures of the interior of the PS4 slim because I wanted to know where that spring went, but there are literally none. Your close ups, however, showed me a little spring that attaches the large black arms of the disc drive to the metal frame of the top of the drive. It's running like a champ now, so I cant thank you enough. Certainly a good cautionary tale for any other viewers that are opening their ps4 slims. Also, I noticed that the slim has one less white arm attached to those larger black arms. That, and mine never came with a screw to hold in the metal bracket for that teeny tiny machine screw that holds down the metal shield on the right side. Ultra weird. Anyways, thanks again and subscribed for life.

seems like the disc doesn't quite reach the laser to read it. it has to use gravity to pull it down. I say check the things that pull the disc in, they might be stuck or broken.
That's what I HATE about PS! Disc is constantly spinning. Why? Lifetime of laser goes down even when whole game is installed on HDD. Why can't console just use disc as verification? Same as X360. I hope PS5 will correct this.
Erick Lopes it's reloading the drive and starting again too try and read it it's cycling threw the operations. Laser either weak dirty or needs to be replaced

@@bolo-8177 Yea it’s the laser it can’t read the disc you either gotta clean the laser with a alcohol but I’d recommend just some hot watered on a que tip rub softly if that don’t work then the drive is broken
Wow, i have been watching your vids for a few days...wow...you are a genius....i was pretty curious about how the optic drive functions....and you knocked it out of the park...lol...step by step explanation and even wired or powered a drive up for us to see...my only question...how much for a new optic drive...my little nephew came over with his 4 not working...we cleaned it...and now its working...however his drive failed on him...off to amazon i go...thankyou sir for the excellent video, im sure i will watch this again atleast once or twice minimum...

All my friends had a ps4 and i was the lame kid without one so i Bought a broken ps4 from ebay for cheap with the money i saved up ( about 100 bucks... basically an overpriced hard drive if i couldn't get it fixed) but i watched ur video of how u placed plastic washers on the cpu bracket that will fix the blue light of death. After trial and error with the washers ( as you pointed out and turning the screws around little by little) i got my cheap broken ps4 working! Thanks man! I now have my bacherors degree and full time job, ended up buying a ps4 pro, but i still have my old ps4 and it works just as good! Im considering giving it away to my youner sis. Hi steve, my disk drive started making a grinding noise so I’ve disassembled and cleaned everything but it still makes the noise, it’s a PS4 slim! The disk isn’t being scratched as far as I can see and still reads fine!

The (blue) "Lens Ribbon Flex Cable," in the back it sends power to the "curcuit board," and the power then in the curcuit board sends power on through to the, "3 blue colored ribbons," that power both the ("laser sensor,") and the, "small curcuit board," that sends power on into the, "motor," (which powers the gears) that then make the disk capable of going in.

Can you make another video like this. My ps4 slim wil not take inn a disk, wil not take out a disk, when i do it manually it wil not begin spinning, have to push it in because the beginning of the manual part wil not take it inn and i have to push very hard!
Your videos are great! Some of the best I've come to find! Couple quick questions: 1) I've been getting "disc is dirty or damaged" error frequently. When I pull the disc out, it's...warm to the touch. It's more likely the motor going than the laser, yeah? 2) different ps4s have different disc drives. I have an early model 2nd gen fat PS4. I believe it has a 400 series single optic drive in it, would it be a thing if I put an 800 series dual optic drive in there? And 3) I live in the desert, it's hot, there's lots of dust and pet hair. I've cleaned my fan and casing countless times but I'm still running really hot. I also pack up my PS4 and travel with it frequently and it gets banged around pretty epically. Thermal paste is one of the last things that's often needed to be considered in PS4 maintenance, but considering the time and circumstances, would you say I'm about due?
Thermal paste is not usually the cause of overheating. You likely have a plugged heat sink. If you remove the motherboard and remove the bottom metal plate you'll be able to clean the heat sink fins. The laser on your disc drive is probably dirty. There is no way to put a different laser in it other than the one that it came with. You might even get by with just cleaning the laser for now.
Imagine if caveman had seen a device like this, or even someone from just 200 years ago? All this tech for these discs is a dying breed the Switch has set the new standard with cartridge based games again eliminating hundreds of these components in each of the millions of units sold.

I saw UA-cam videos that when they inserted a mini DVD into a PS4 system the disc drive appears to malfunction and won't play the disc that they have to eject it. But the PS3 system's disc drive can accept and play mini DVD without issue that Sony even used it to promote their mini DVD camcorder.
Hi TronicsFix, I’m curious about the magnet assembly that drops down. My magnet is dragging on the CD making a noise, and I can’t quite figure out why. I think it may have to do with the alignment of the magnet
The magnet itself is dragging? Or the plastic carrier that holds the magnet is dragging? If it's the plastic piece you can fix that. There are several places where that plastic piece is help up by the metal plate. You can bend those little tabs up just a little bit so the plastic piece stops rubbing on the disc.
Thanks for the video, my drive has some problem in the white thing that is supposed to 'lock' the rollers down and not let a second disc come inside. I will try to fix it myself later looking at how yours is.

Do you have a fix on this now? We have the same problem, sometimes when i insert the disc, the magnet won't secure the disc so the drive can't read it

That's what I HATE about PS! Disc is constantly spinning. Why? Lifetime of laser goes down even when whole game is installed on HDD. Why can't console just use disc as verification? Same as X360. I hope PS5 will correct this.

When i put the disc in my Ps4 its made some eject sonds and appear this Unrecognized Disc Error
Erick Lopes it's reloading the drive and starting again too try and read it it's cycling threw the operations. Laser either weak dirty or needs to be replaced
@@ryans413 ok well my is kinda the same when I put a disk in it go in but it’s just stops and the laxer is reading it but it’s makes a clicking sound and it won’t read it and the disc won’t spin and after like 20 seconds it’s pops up that it’s not recognized
@@bolo-8177 Yea it’s the laser it can’t read the disc you either gotta clean the laser with a alcohol but I’d recommend just some hot watered on a que tip rub softly if that don’t work then the drive is broken

Wow, i have been watching your vids for a few days...wow...you are a genius....i was pretty curious about how the optic drive functions....and you knocked it out of the park...lol...step by step explanation and even wired or powered a drive up for us to see...my only question...how much for a new optic drive...my little nephew came over with his 4 not working...we cleaned it...and now its working...however his drive failed on him...off to amazon i go...thankyou sir for the excellent video, im sure i will watch this again atleast once or twice minimum...

It's worth mentioning that the laser flashes blue then red. It has 2 elements. Blue for blurays and red for dvd or dvd dual layer.

Fascinating, most BD-ROM drives have 2 lenses, this thing looks like a regular DVD-ROM/HD-DVD-ROM with a single lens.
Hey man thanks for these videos and your explanations. You saved me some good money back when i was in my first year in community college in 2014 and barely had cash. All my friends had a ps4 and i was the lame kid without one so i Bought a broken ps4 from ebay for cheap with the money i saved up ( about 100 bucks... basically an overpriced hard drive if i couldn't get it fixed) but i watched ur video of how u placed plastic washers on the cpu bracket that will fix the blue light of death. After trial and error with the washers ( as you pointed out and turning the screws around little by little) i got my cheap broken ps4 working! Thanks man! I now have my bacherors degree and full time job, ended up buying a ps4 pro, but i still have my old ps4 and it works just as good! Im considering giving it away to my youner sis. XD you got my subscribe

Hi steve, my disk drive started making a grinding noise so I’ve disassembled and cleaned everything but it still makes the noise, it’s a PS4 slim! The disk isn’t being scratched as far as I can see and still reads fine!
in my ps4 pro when i insert the cd of uncharted or gta5......after reading the disk my ps4 pro vibrate from left side mean disk driver side ...after some time its stop....can u tell me what is this
some of my cd does n"t vibrate after read.......but uncharted and gta5 my cd spin after reading....the game is not boosted up

The (blue) "Lens Ribbon Flex Cable," in the back it sends power to the "curcuit board," and the power then in the curcuit board sends power on through to the, "3 blue colored ribbons," that power both the ("laser sensor,") and the, "small curcuit board," that sends power on into the, "motor," (which powers the gears) that then make the disk capable of going in.

Can you make another video like this. My ps4 slim wil not take inn a disk, wil not take out a disk, when i do it manually it wil not begin spinning, have to push it in because the beginning of the manual part wil not take it inn and i have to push very hard!

One of the major solution to "Unrecognized Disk" is to "finger tap" the disc drive area right after put the disc in.

Your videos are great! Some of the best I've come to find! Couple quick questions: 1) I've been getting "disc is dirty or damaged" error frequently. When I pull the disc out, it's...warm to the touch. It's more likely the motor going than the laser, yeah? 2) different ps4s have different disc drives. I have an early model 2nd gen fat PS4. I believe it has a 400 series single optic drive in it, would it be a thing if I put an 800 series dual optic drive in there? And 3) I live in the desert, it's hot, there's lots of dust and pet hair. I've cleaned my fan and casing countless times but I'm still running really hot. I also pack up my PS4 and travel with it frequently and it gets banged around pretty epically. Thermal paste is one of the last things that's often needed to be considered in PS4 maintenance, but considering the time and circumstances, would you say I'm about due?
Thermal paste is not usually the cause of overheating. You likely have a plugged heat sink. If you remove the motherboard and remove the bottom metal plate you'll be able to clean the heat sink fins.
The laser on your disc drive is probably dirty. There is no way to put a different laser in it other than the one that it came with. You might even get by with just cleaning the laser for now.
Imagine if caveman had seen a device like this, or even someone from just 200 years ago? All this tech for these discs is a dying breed the Switch has set the new standard with cartridge based games again eliminating hundreds of these components in each of the millions of units sold.
At 6:00 did you notice the laser trying to read CD (red laser)?
The Red laser is DVD.
The Blue laser is BluRay/BD-ROM (for PS4 games and computer software).

I saw UA-cam videos that when they inserted a mini DVD into a PS4 system the disc drive appears to malfunction and won't play the disc that they have to eject it. But the PS3 system's disc drive can accept and play mini DVD without issue that Sony even used it to promote their mini DVD camcorder.

Hi TronicsFix, I’m curious about the magnet assembly that drops down. My magnet is dragging on the CD making a noise, and I can’t quite figure out why. I think it may have to do with the alignment of the magnet
The magnet itself is dragging? Or the plastic carrier that holds the magnet is dragging? If it's the plastic piece you can fix that. There are several places where that plastic piece is help up by the metal plate. You can bend those little tabs up just a little bit so the plastic piece stops rubbing on the disc.

thanks for this great video! I wonder if there's any place that sells those tiny switches that are located on the motor pcb.. one of mine is broken, and it would be a shame to throw away or replace the whole motor unit instead of replacing those switches... any idea?
Never seen just the switches for sale. You can replace the motor and green board though
