Kind of crazy how in five years, the Chargers had gone from an all offense, no defense team under Coryell to this rugged, hard hitting, physical team that just needed more steady QB play to win games. Stan Humphries arrived and Bobby Ross's guiding hand led to a remarkable turnaround in 1992.
Some o' ya'll got jokes, but I can say that this Chargers team--the ones in place just before Humphries came to town--may not have been great, but they were a compelling team to watch...especially their running backs. Rod Bernstine was one of my favorite players to watch back then. Apart from Okoye and Barry Word, there weren't a whole lot of big bruising backs at that time. When he was HEALTHY, he was AWESOME! As I've said elsewhere, during those years--as is evident here--the Chargers had a RIDICULOUS amount of backfield talent...and this is BEFORE the arrival of Natrone Means and Eric Bienemy.
Odawg96 I think Bernstine was straight-line actually faster than Marion Butts .. but Butts was more consistent. Means was amazing. This is a great season yearbook ... Shows the team was more talented than their record.
Only 4 wins, but they made them count- essentially kept Seattle/Miami out of the playoffs, prevented the Raiders from a higher playoff seed, and somehow beat a monster Saints team (and prevented them from a 2 seed and first round bye, for they would have had a tiebreaker over Detroit)
If you look at the scores of their games, they lost a lot of close games. Only twice (49ers and Jets) did they lose big. One of the unluckiest teams if you look at their scores, maybe the best 4-12 team ever
+Joe Mama Not all of them. Back then, only college football's conferences Big 8 and Southwest Conference had an all turf conference because all of the team's stadium had that infamous AstroTurf. That shit sucked ass and it just like playing on asphalt.
RIP 🙏 🪦 Junior Seau & Country Hall! Bobby Beathhart Greatest Decision was to Bring Bobby Ross to Town. His Worst Mistake was Constantly Trading Away #1 Draft Picks for Used Up Players. This lead to Ross and Beathhart Budding Heads with Each Other and Ross left for Detroit. This lead to the Downfall of the Chargers until Ladain Tomlinson came to town with Bress, Rivers, in 2003 along with Marty Schottenheimer. They brought the Bolts back to life. Only once again Schottenheimer would But Heads with A.J Smith and left after the 06 Season. The Chargers have been on the Decline Eversince. The Chargers Ownership & Management have always been the killer on why the Chargers have yet to win a SB.
‘The gathering storm: a preview of the 1992 chargers’ - they got it right u have to admit w/ the bullish outlook, would be their 1st playoff trip in a decade much in part to their new hc
You can't say nfl films was wrong about the changers saying there's bright future ahead because in 1992 they 11-5 and won the afc West and beat Kansas City in the playoffs. In 1993 they went 9-7 in 1994 they went 11-5 and a super bowl berth and in 1995 they were 9-7 and in the playoffs.
true, broski, i'm not going to deny that. i remember those teams. the chargers had a lot of heart but i think it's just funny how nfl films could give a commentary on any team like they were destined for greatness.the chargers were good and i enjoyed watching them with seau, butts, harrison and the rest but nfl films made them out to be the afc's version of the 49ers or cowboys back then, lol
Prince Edward yeah it was great I just watched the yearbook on the 1995 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the did the same with them but Tampa Bay was a team on the rise.
RIP Junior Seau

If you would of told me that this Chargers team would join forces with the Rams and become Los Angeles in 2017, I would of called you crazy.

I love those San Diego Charger uniforms I wish they would go back the ones they wear now are so cartoonish
1991 Chargers 4-12. After that though, they weren't bad for the next several seasons.
Wow all those games that were on that stupid turf
+Joe Mama Not all of them. Back then, only college football's conferences Big 8 and Southwest Conference had an all turf conference because all of the team's stadium had that infamous AstroTurf. That shit sucked ass and it just like playing on asphalt.
I never played on astro turf when I was a kid so I was always under the impression it was soft like carpet lol

Braided hair tattoos and concussions didn't exist in the NFL in1991.
flatpat I was flat tops, mullets and concussions
how are braids any worse than a mullet
only nfl films could make any team including the '91 chargers seem like a great team on the horizon..lol

Prince Edward yeah football from the late 80s to 2006 was great.
