  • I had some fun welding 4 plates together to make a bigger, and heavy, plate.
This was the welder I was using:

Try pushing instead of pulling, you should get better results!!

You show great resilience and determination to get the task accomplished. Always enjoy your work. You might try flap disks for grinding and weld clean-up, works like a charm for me

I went on a welding course some 40 years ago and one problem that we where taught to overcome was the problem of buckling mental this is caused by the Weld shrinking and pulling the metal together and so the solution was to do the weld in small staggered welds starting from the right and working towards the left of the work piece thereby pulling the weld back to straight finally finishing up welding over the entire weld in one final weld. I don't know if I have described this quite correctly but this is the best that I can manage in such a short time without diagrams to illustrate. This is called leftward welding and should not be confused with a left handed person doing the weld, so the individual welds are done from left to right.

Any excuse to weld is good enough for me, though I prefer TIG.

    Slower weld is the key.

Hi Susie, I was always taught not to let smoke escape from anything electrical, apparently it needs the smoke to work 😂 xx

Just out of interest what welder do you have and have you got a 16amp socket outlet or are you using the standard 13amp plug?

If you need a flat surface for sandpaper (I'm just guessing here) I have a little tip for you: try marble window sills. Perhaps I'm completely wrong. Then forget about it.

RIP Belt sander, once the magic smoke has escaped unless you can get it all back in it’s had it! Unfortunately due to it being an old machine you need to get the right magic smoke to fix it, wrong vintage doesn’t work!

RIP belt sander. Do you have a use in mind for the plate you just welded together, or was this just a skills exercise?

Welding in the flat with a mig welder you get a better result if you weld away from yourself. just the opposite of stick welding.

Try oxy/acetaline but you'd need a large nozzle and plenty of welding rods.....................................

Uh oh, you let the good smoke out of it, now it'll never work again

Weld angle too shallow and you're going in the wrong direction, you're not stick welding.
