Bike Messenger Riding Fast and Fluid Through NYC Traffic

- Meet Cooper Ray the cyclist in this video and Terry Barentsen the camera man riding behind him.
Now you might think this was filmed as a once off, for some kind of stunt, movie or commercial, but in actual fact Terry is a freelance cinematographer based in New York, and often films Cooper, himself or various other people, riding around new York City for his UA-cam channel.
What makes Cooper’s riding style even more amazing, is he does not have any gears or brakes on his bike.
When it comes to braking, I’ve seen Cooper jump off the bike and slow down on foot, also I have seen him use his foot on the back wheel like a brake, but otherwise he just keeps riding.
Also the bike Cooper is riding is a track bike made for racing at a velodrome, it is a fixed gear bike with no brakes and no freewheel. Which means the rear wheel drives the pedals, so as long as the bike is moving the pedals are turning.
To all those who think this form of riding is reckless and dangerous, I agree, but that does not change the fact people all over the world ride like this every day, Terry just wanted to say “everyone crashes from time to time, even with brakes, we believe staying focused and aware of your surroundings is the best way to stay safe and having no brakes forces you to be in the present. These videos aren't made to encourage bad cycling, so please ride at your own risk and skill level.

0:31 Cooper almost hits a child at a crosswalk when he didn't have the light, saved by the parent/guardian/friend.
0:51 Cooper crosses another red light and makes an unpredictable left turn, causing an SUV to slam its breaks during traffic flow.

Guys like Cooper are a menace to the road, and should be banned from being able to own a bike in New York city. As a law abiding cyclist, guys like Cooper offend me, because it's people like him that make it harder for the rest of us to own bikes in New York. New York city is one of the most unpredictable places to be a cyclist, and the way Cooper was weaving in and out of traffic like that was super dangerous. I can't tell you how many times people have suddenly popped out of nowhere to cross between non moving cars, and had I been moving like Cooper, I would have nailed them. And yeah, they shouldn't be J walking, but the number one rule about cycling in New York is that even if you're doing everything right, you have to take precautions for other people. It's the random guy that you don't see coming (like Cooper) that you have to look out for. Also, Cooper himself seems to be an arrogant pr*ck.

This is completely inaccurate. Turn left turn right bike lanes. Completely unpredictable, do you bike on 3 trillion milligrams of lsd. It's so easy riding in nyc. Against traffic in front of the police, no complaints no tickets, just look sensible.
I was riding at full speed in between stopped cars in traffic, I was pedaling next to a bus which had blocked my view - just then some guy appeared who decided to jaywalk in front of the bus... I hit the rear brakes going into a skid, leaned back to moved my center of mass to the rear so that if we hit I wouldn't go over the handlebars... he saw me braking, turned towards me, spread his legs to straddle the front tire and put his hands out to cushion my handlebars...
Luckily, acting together, nothing bad happened, but riding this way is a coin-flip, it works until it doesn't and an accident waiting to happen.
I've been riding like this for 3 years and I haven't crashed once, this might be dangerous but people that ride fixed like this know what they are doing. You can criticize us but you wont change the way we ride ;)
His skills are amazing. His respect for other people? Non-existent.

someone did that to me when i was riding between cars on my motorbike, lucky i was going slow I was able to stop in time,

Been riding my bike in Amsterdam where dooring happens often. It amazed me how you develop some sixth sense for that.
This type of riding fuels anti-cyclist hate which sets back efforts by decades to build cycling infrastructure which will allow all cyclists to move faster whilst being safer and reduce car congestion. It's also directly dangerous to pedestrians, other cyclists and car drivers.

As a cyclist myself I agree on this 100%. This is very selfish way of riding, not "cool" and not impressive at all. Just fuels hate towards cyclist, as you said. Stupid and ignorant guy, goes on red lights when kids are on zebra crossing.

Sometimes when traveling at certain rates of velocity executive decisions must be made. It’s usually worse if he slows down as that hesitation alone may kill you in traffic or certain life scenarios period.

This is a perfect demonstration of defensive cycling. This is the way we ride- quick cuts in and out with direct anticipation of who will go where. This is not bad cycling. This is good form.

As a rider, this guy makes my world more dangerous. The one thing we as bike riders need to be is predictable and safe.

Your purpose on the road is not the same as a bike messenger. Unless you too are a bike messenger.
You could say “this is like water flowing around rocks” about nearly any unsafe behavior. Doesn’t make it impressive or worth praising..
How exactly? I'm also a rider, and Cooper's riding has no bearing on my riding. If drivers/other road users hate you for some reason, they will hate you whether or not riders like Cooper exist.
besides, he's more predictable that every Sunday rider out there- you can expect him to go fast, run red lights and cut between traffic. As not only a rider, but a driver as well, I'd rather see this dude on the road instead of say a girl wobbling down the road on an omafiets, not really understanding what's going on.
I've been riding in London for a couple of years, and it's a cool feeling to go fluid, jump some traffic lights, anticipate cars' movements, and blablabla, but there are limits and this is well beyond them. It's just stupid and selfish to ride like this...

Traffic rules apply to cars and similar vehicles with license plate. The worst offense he would be doing is the equivalent of a pedestrian crossing at the wrong time.

That's what i thought the whole time watching this. If he wants to put his own life at risk that's on him, but he could have easily smashed into a pedestrian or caused a car accident like a bunch of times just during this video.
Maybe it just looks more dangers than it is. The guy said he had been doing that most of his life. If he never hurt another person doing this, it's still reckless but i guess it's not so bad. But if he ever hurt one person doing this, and he still is doing it, than fuck that guy.

That's incredibly rude and dangerous driving. Fluid or not, nearly rides into pedestrians, slows traffic and one unsuspecting move and he can easily cause an accident to himself and others.

That's one example on how usages of music can manipulate ppl on being dangerously exposed. And we tolerate it cuz we know it's part of our nature. We will always find perspective in doomed scenarios. Edit: 10/22/2022 I became a city cyclist half a year ago (half a year after writing this comment) using my trusty second hand road bike to ride everywhere because of these gas prices, so I'm finally able to speak with some experience. I still stand by what I said. Absolute menace

Not just pedestrians, cars behind him constantly hit breaks to avoid riding him over creating breaking snake reactions who knows how far away. 1 minute of this guy cycling on road probably slows down traffic by some 1hr if time of everyone who suffered chain reaction is added up. 33 seconds in and we witness a near collision with a child, which was avoided only thanks to the awareness of another pedestrian. You couldn't have picked a worse image to show against the commentary of "effortless riding".
Terry's footage is thrilling to watch, but very often the people that he films are reckless (and following such people seems even more dangerous, because you have less control over timing and trajectory... I'm amazed that he has been able to do this for as long as he has without a major accident). Give other road users the respect that you want for yourself.
You know why these cyclists are rare? Because their luck and skill runs out eventually....

If one person opens the car door Buddy is done for. Like permanent injury 30kph(roughly) to full stop in an instant. As a Mtn bike racer this scares the life out of me.

@@owenpotts9697 I've ridden motorcycles for years and honed my skills on the highly aggressive streets and freeways of Southern California, so I know what it is to ride through stopped traffic and get around quickly. This guy does a lot of "cyclist" stuff that enrages people. He did nearly get hit a couple of times. Nearly hit other people several times. And totally ignored traffic signaling. No; not calling this riding talent I'm calling this reckless and lucky.

@@owenpotts9697 You can't always predict traffic. What if a bus blocks his view, so he cant see if a car is coming in the intersection? The car might not be able to stop, because there's no way some1 is expecting a cyclist to blow a red light going 25 mph on a bike. Also, at that speed, it's impossible to stop a fixie in a few metres. If he gets hit by a car that is going 30-35 mph, he has a pretty high chance of getting serious injuries or even dying. What he's doing is stupid and dangerous. I like cycling, but I hate people who ride like this.

My dad never said that to me as well, so I ride my bike almost the same way as him. The only injuries I’ve had so far are minor cuts on my hands

@@irgendwer3610 am writing this a week after getting a hit-and-run from a road raged driver. Hit the right side of my head pretty hard and hurt my hands and ribs. Also had the flu. But it was when I was riding “safely” which further validates my need to ride dangerously as it forces me to be alert and actively avoid major accidents.

Theres running red lights and then there’s running red lights. This video shows the second variant, shooting through, only quick looks to make sure, relying on reflex and improv to drive around obstacles.

This has so much potential for failure. It's not considering other people at all. I've only watched one minute of this and the guy has already nearly hit a child and went though a red light making a driver brake hard. When on the road you don't only think of yourself but others around you.

When riding my bicycle I ride fast, but always assume that car drivers, other bicyclists and pedestrians are constantly texting, making calls, listening to music with noise cancelling headphones or simply not paying attention to the road. This saved my countless times from crashing into opening car doors, into pedestrians walking zigzag and other types of smartphone zombies.
