Great balanced take on this. Really showed the pros and cons. Hard to deny the positives of a 15% decrease in poverty coupled with a major investment in rail which is much more environmentally friendly. But also hard to deny the negatives of deforestation, habitat/eco diversity loss, and disrespect to indigenous peoples. I lean toward the project being a good thing overall because of the fact that they are building on previously cleared areas/old tracks and creating under and over passes for wildlife, but I think they need to be cautious and slow down as the one man said. They also should not kowtow to the hotel's demands.
Agreed. And if the government would add new trees to replace the ones lost, it is a big win.
Agreed
Who do you think work in the hotels and on the farms that benefit for this project? 2.4 million people in the Yucatan, 800.000 speakers of the (30+) native languages. The 'indigenous peoples' there are nothing like the 'indigenous peoples' in the US or Canada. Pretty much everyone there is more of less 'indigenous'. Also on 4:35 he states that the train aims to connect smaller communities but that is exactly what this train doesn't aim to do (1500 km, 17 stops) so the argument is based of a false premise. This is a train build for tourism, paid for with tourist money, to improve the tourism industry with some side benefits. And this will make eco-tourism and environmental research much easier and attractive. Once there are jaguar safaris'' there then the untamed jungle will have economical value and thus will be protected by people with power.
But agreed on the silly move to give in to the hotels. Very dumb play by the hotels.
And just give the 'indigenous peoples' a bag of money to go away (after signing some documents that they now truly are ok). $11 billion or $11.8 billion (800.000 times $100,- a year for 10 years seems more than fair) is worth it and the money will flow back into the local economy anyway.
So yes let’s kowtow to the 300 people affected when millions would benefit… hate the nimby-ism crowds. The only reason they say no is to get paid or paid more than they are. Everyone is greedy at the end of the day
The opposition to the project is funded by the cartel. They want to control road access to various sites
I don't really understand why everyone states deforestation as a problem when building railways, but when building higways or streets it's not even mentioned often times...
for the same reason they always do convenience, cognitive dissonance.
ironically in mexico the majority of the people that opposes to the Train don't even live in the states where its going to be built, its like saying:
"I have the right to live in a city commodities, services, with streets made of asphalt, skyscrapers, freeways, infrastructure, etc, but you don't have that right because you live in an under developed zone, I have the right to cut trees but you don't"
Those "experts" also doesn't talk about the massive deforestation/water contamination/biodiversity destruction due to pig farms in the peninsula in prior goverments, and also doesn't want to close them either.

It would be a great project, it just needs to be designed responsibly. Obviously it can't be built on top of historic aquifers and through burial sites. If that means it has to pass closer to hotels then they'd like then the hotels can suck it up.
Love to hear a plan to satisfy every concern …. Is this even possible ? No
Hotels are being short sighted Tourist most definitely would want to be able to just walk to the Hotels in the main strip from the station than wade through traffic.
If an accurate reflection of the scenario, then I agree. Huge amounts of taxpayer money is being used for the express benefit of their businesses. Reducing dependence on the source of traffic is an obvious win for all. This is just a classic NIMBY line.
I think the hotel corporation lobbyists are calling the shots on the train routes. As long as the government refuses to listen to local concerns and keeps rushing this it'll have a lot of bad effects on the environment, the indigenous people and trust in the government.
Yea those burial sites are very important where they put their ancestors in the ground and said ooga booga and went on with their life,
Love Mexico !!
This is a great idea. Trains are far more efficient and environmentally friendly compared to buses and cars, and this will also benefit the region's economy. Goods can also be transported on the tracks. The rerouted section should be restored to it's original route next to the hotels instead of the caverns.

As a mexican I support the project, I'm aware that destruction is imminent, but not as bad as all the exclusive resorts and the accelerated urban development along the coastline, the funny thing is that media, NGOs and environmental groups never show up but only for the train project. I certainty believe that many powerful groups are against the project because of their own interests making-up them with "good intentions" such as feeling concerned about the environment.
Im agree about your comment.

I was in Calakmul in December. Calakmul is one of the last hidden Maya sites remaining. Just to get there it took us 5 hours driving through the jungle and also a long hike. While I fully support the train, I think a lot of these sites are going to lose its charm. When I was there there was a lot of tourist, which is crazy because this site is not very well known. I can’t imagine the amount of tourist that all this archeological sites will bring. Yes it’s great for the economy but again it will lose its charm sadly

@@Travelsandmore333 I promise you the deep dives will not end in any upcoming lifetime, the entire peninsula is dense jungle over countless hidden sites and previous abandoned excavations because the jungle is THICK and always taking over old sites. You have to be very adventurous to get out there and not succumb to insect bites and jaguars.
Moving the train because the hotels don't like things would be an insane thing to do. Especially at the cost of a key ecological focus point. Honestly the hotels shouldn't get a say in anything really.
The hotels actually hold all the power. They're the money makers. They call the shots. The whole point of the train is for servicing tourism.
The track is built on the west side of the highway. The vast majority of the resorts are on the east side of the highway.
Only a very small minority of resorts, ones with no beach front access, would be affected.
But what there is on that side of the highway is alot of private communities. Rich people paying lots of money for their own apartments and condos.
The hypocrisy in that the hotels are the ones who not only wanted the railway but who also rubbish any complaints the natives have about noisy and disruptive trains in their backyard, but then they themselves say "We don't want the trains so close to the hotel because they are disruptive and noisy."
The railway is being funded by tourism taxes.
Hotels basically means tourists. If tourists are annoyed.
Really interesting project.
The Yucatan Peninsula is a location of massive biodiversity - and I really appreciate the views of indigenous people and environmentalists here. I think running tracks at ground level through jungle that's home to Jaguars is pretty concerning - but I'm also sympathetic to the economic needs of communities in the peninsula.
Hopefully a more environmentally friendly solution that involves less rainforest clearing can be reached.
It always seems disingenuous to me framing public infrastructure projects in an environmental lens. Sure we can say that sections of rainforest are being cleared and its impacting local biodiversity, but this presumes that the current means of transportation are not affecting these habitats. It is far more damaging maintaining a reliance upon cars which long term is having a far greater destructive effect on these habitats, than it is to build greener public transportation which will slow the effects of climate change
@@Robert-xq2yz that's a completely valid point, I appreciate the perspective.
@@Robert-xq2yz the roads can easily be vuilt in less damaging area , but with trains (especially hsr ) you have less flexibility
Excellent point. There are suspending maglev train systems that serve the same purpose as track systems. They connect destinations in shorter times too. With such a huge budget the organisers could have easily developed a suspending maglev system.

I think this is a good project. It just needs to be environmentally friendly and needs to take into consideration the needs of the indigenous communities. Also, the hotels can suck it. They should be at the bottom of the stakeholder list.
There have been many, many public referendums to the local communities with special focus on indigenous communities. You only get the negative takes in English media, it's very biased.

The Mexican Mayan Train stands as a promising beacon of opportunity for the Yucatán Peninsula, holding the potential to uplift local economies, provide employment, and bolster sustainable tourism. By linking diverse destinations, it encourages the exploration of Mexico's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. The project's envisioned benefits include improved transportation access, new business ventures, and heightened cultural exchange, which could lead to a brighter future for the region's communities. As stakeholders work collaboratively to address concerns and ensure responsible implementation, the Mexican Mayan Train has the chance to become a transformative force for positive growth and prosperity. Thanks, The B1M!
I'm Canadian and I've visited this region 3 times in the last few years as a tourist and I think the train is a great idea. The entire region has really poor infrastructure and bad public transit. The modes of getting around in the whole stretch from Cancun to Tulum and all the more inland points is baaaad. Quintana Roo is really getting hit hard by the the Sargassum Seaweed ruining it's beaches for half the year and they need a real boost to tourism and making it a lot more easier, safer and more modern for visitors to get around is essential to long term economic stability and growth. I'm an environmentalist and I feel for the locals and their objections but in a few years word is going to continue to spread amongst foreign tourists with big tourism bucks that Mexico's Yucatan region beaches are basically unswimmable and driving endless hours in buses in bumpy unstable buses and vans is going to drive even more tourism away.
Yes it is backward, and it should stay that way! Developing every square inch of our planet is not a good idea aside of it being in the interest of the few to enrich selves!
Have you heard of why locals are protesting? What do you say to their cause for concern around cenotes and the cave systems. Many locals fear of collapses since the routes go over many of these systems.
@@FromTrash2Treasurego ask the real local people to see how they are excited for this project, they are happy because they will have a lot of work and finally tourism will be able to visit these far hidden places where locals will be able to offer their product directly to visitors and not be ripped off by whole seller that want to pay nothing for their Mexican handcrafts
There is a local man that gathers that sewed. In fact, resorts pay him to collect that seaweed. He has used it to make block. He named his company Sargobloc and he's been invited to many construction forums and also been on various programs promoting its energy saving properties for home building. He took the opportunity to take something that was allegedly bad and turned into something great for his fellow Mexicans and others.

It was a pipe dream project (y elefante blanco) after all.
The main idea of this project is connect the Yucatan Peninsula, because for over 70 years this zone of Mexico was separated from big highways, meaning that its economy wouldnt had any increase because of the poor ways of transport, until thankfully the federal highway 180D reached Campeche City, this is an opportunity to connect many communities that are living in poor conditions, i know that i might destroy the habitat of the Chiapas Jaguar, but we need to consider that there has been worst deforestations in EDOMEX while trying to build the Arco Norte highway, and the highway to atlacomulco
Exactly I think the same way I was there as a tourist all tho I’m Mexican, it was a bit confusing how to get to many places in public transportation so I rented a car a it was the best experience ever.

like transporting cargo, Spain invested so much on hi-speed rails for passengers only that now they struggle to use the trains to transport goods other than passengers, but a train can only get so heavy and fast before it gets off its rails, its dangerous for such high speeds to transport freight in general.
Thats one of the first things the current administration thought about before starting the project, people were asking: why not a bullet train already?
but the point of building such a long railway is to take many trailers and cars out of the streets and freeways reducing the co2 emissions, like you said make it useful and efficient as possible, so it'll be tourist trains during the day and freight trains during the night (and obviously overnight passengers trains also)
Trains are the future, unfortunately in Mexico they got taken by the private sector to transport freight exclusively, despite Mexico having such a large railway infrastructure built since the 1800, so they don't even need to destroy nature since most of the railways already exists, but theyre under american contracts.

Great work by the Mexican's, they are building important infrastructure for the people of the Yucatan Peninsula,
as they have less work and opportunities than the other parts of Mexico, the "jungle" needs to be protected to
keep the tourist attractions of the forest, the culture, the biodiversity (of plants & fauna), the artifacts, the Maya
architecture, the swimming 'holes" etc. The Yucatan is spectacular, and has massive potential, the fast train
with 21 stops, will "open up" certain sections of the jungle, with this in mind, it should only ever be allocated
"coastal areas", not large "inland" tracts of land, with the extent of the "land area" should be kept to a minimum,
so all "building projects should be, must be at least medium density", keeping the tourists and travelers in an
area that can be easily "maintained", without a huge spread of building activity, this will also generate tremendous
job opportunities for the locals of the Yucatan, including indigenous people, they can always commute a few kms,
from home to work (maybe 20) - without work coming into their homes. I see a NEW CANCUN rising like a FENIX.

If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!
Quality of this video was top notch, your channel keeps improving!
The only one railway’s section that is not being constructed on railways that ALREADY exist since more than 100 years ago is being building alongside of Hotel’s Lots, lands that are NOT part of the Reserve of the Jungle
Fantastic analysis! Had never heard of it but you managed to present it as well as the pros and cons of it in 10 minutes which is fab, thanks!!
I like this reporting … really bounds the difference between the promoters & those who are protesting and why
Specifically, why they’re protesting against construction > for responsibility +environmental sustainability in the methodology in which its built and the long-term effects

I think the train is a good idea. I would like to go down there and ride it once it is completed and see all the ruins.
Is amazing, go México go.!
Amazing good great works construction project beautiful performance video by B1M❤
Please review also the reforestation program that is ongoing next to the train, "sembrando vida" and also the enlarged protected area of the Jaguar preserve. Both had to be mentioned on the video. This project has more to it. It is bigger.
0:02 "a tacko" LMAO IM CACKLING
This project is somehow extremely captivating. It creates a lot of suspense in me with the positive of building a modern train network, where it's needed and negative, jungle chop chop. Also selecting the proper materials to keep maintenance low must be a real nightmare with that climate. Warm, humid and salty air eats steel and concrete for breakfast.
Wow man thanks so much for the video about proyects of my country Mexico 🇲🇽🤩🥸😎🤩🥸🥸
ah trains, my favorite mode of transport
Bravo. Top tier b1m video. Great view of the issues
I think this is a good project. Electric trains are way more eco friendly and can haul more passengers and cargo then a bus could ever do. Simply redesigns of some elements of this project is all that’s needed. Perhaps this could be the Launchpad for more higher speed and high speed rail in Mexico which would be something good to promote.
So long as everybody who has to relocate is fairly compensated and environmental factors are well considered trains are usually a win for everyone... Those are not small questions though, and there's little that people outside of the local area can probably learn about those issues without some proper investigative work. Usually its up to the locals to make sure everything has been taken care of with regards to environment and land aquisition.
I wonder if its status as a holiday location could promote the protests so that larger organisations and benefactors can intervene if need be. These days its often easy enough to dismiss the locals as a vocal minority, especially if they are not the primary source of the governments income as is sometimes the case in tourist towns and cities.
Its true that just about any large infrastructure project has its detractors, but the fact that there seem to be multiple groups of people with concerns, I'm inclined to believe there is some basis to their complaints.
For the passage there will be 3 classes available 1. passenger experience ( standard), 2. Culinary experience ( built in restaurant in the train so passengers can try traditional foods) 3. Travel experience ( were you have your own cabin inside the train for long distance travels ) can’t wait till it starts operations in 2023 👍🏽
A brand new 10 billion dollar rail line and it's not even going to be electrified
So their claims of "environmentally friendly" are undermined by this alone.
Is curious how this “experts” are so happy with the highways 🛣 and railways that ALREADY exist in the region since 100 years ago WITHOUT touching the underground rivers so this topic turns political instead of objectively professional
maybe because this "experts" wasn't born 100 year ago and now they want that the new infrastructure are done the right way?
is curious how ''experts'' cancel the texcoco airport to protect a lake that has no life, but at the same time dont care about the jungle deforestation...

Wonderful project! Good for you Mexico 😁
honestly, i think its going to be a good project in the long run. But, I simply don't want this construction to destroy any existing natural sites like the one under water.
No one said anything about underwater sites. That doesn't even exist. The aquifer is everywhere in the peninsula. Anything you build is on top of it: hotels, airports, streets, homes. Nothing is destroyed. You are easy prey to propaganda.
Cenotes
Too late for that damage have been done already u can check the amount of parks, malls, farms,Hotels etc all around the Yucatán Península. This train Is beign carefully built taking into consideration archeological sites, nature, animals.
Done! millions of trees cutted, they started the work without previous removal of the fauna also. This project is in an insane RUSH.
@@juvvalan1654 millions of trees cut by spans chains of hotels which have been in Yucatán for ages, with none of you saying a fucking word! Hypocrites!
The B1M seems to be a respected channel. Send a reporter to the Península, and interview the locals, people who lives in $10 or $15 dollars a day, and they, sometimes have to feed a family of four or more.
Thanks B1M for doing a good video on building railroads.
Many of these problems have faced railroads in the Americas
since the 1860's.
The B1M when making videos in countries like China and Turkey: This amazing and well-planned project will open thousands of jobs and save the environment on 3 different planets
B1M when making videos in western countries: 4000 environmental groups are against the failing railway/building which is waaay to expensive to be feasible
The cost to benefit equation is different in socialist countries and the US/Mexico. Rail almost never pays for itself directly, but gives huge societal benefits. In the US/Mexico those societal benefits are not taken into account because they can not be priced directly.
Just remind the citizens it's either the 2 track train line that passes every hour. Or a 6 lane highway with noise that won't stop.
It is an amazing part of the world. I have always taken taxis across the region while there. Taxis are expensive and the driving feels like a bit of an intrusion in the wildlife. Without them however the world would not be able to enjoy the amazing nature, culture and world history. I think electric trains would be better than the extensive highway use with a pretty low impact compared to heavier road use.
With electric vehicles getting cheaper every week, the environmental impact of laying all the track has to be mitigated by some money spent on preservation areas and probably some wildlife conervation programs. There should be research done in to what animal populations reside in the areas and how to best adapt the surrounding terrain to protect them.
In Australia we do that any time we build new road or rail networks. We create nature briges and tunnes for the animals to use with native plants and the areas are restricted so that people don't wander in and disturb them. Most of our wildlife are extremely dumb about cars so its best practice to surround any roads or rails through habitats with fences and some means of noise dampening.
If my country had big cats or other large predators I would certainly be insisting on a similar solution to protect them and ensure they can cross safely where required.
6 hours is a crazy long journey, but its plausible to assume that road widening could allow for higher speeds of travel. It appears that there is little traffic traveling on the route to Machu Pichu besides direct, so adding wide lanes and safety barriers could probably reduce the travel time somewhat.
A rail line bypassing this route would also spell disaster for any small business alone the road which relies on visitors to the landmark for customers. I love new train lines as a concept, but there's a lot of reasons why people are resistent to them and in this case I understand why.
Love for Mexico and mexicans ❤
We are very glad about this mega project in Mexico, and believe that will get an aditional impulse to the region.

It's not on a good supply line to the US so little cartel presence there. Also toerist dollars means no fertile ground to grow one.

Nah...it's cartel culture that makes Mexico. Narcos: Mexico is the best TV show out there.
It's like saying America could be far more amazing without it's love affair with guns.
@@shogun2215 Last I checked, my guns didn't kill anyone. The cartel filets people alive on the other hand.
Thank you, Fred, for this very interesting look at the project. As always, it's a major project pitting economic growth with environmental/indigenous concerns.
It's same here in India too. No one has a problem with clearing forests, or vegetation for 100-meter express highways, but everyone is against clearing 40 meters for a fully electrified high-speed railway line which is greener than a highway.
Wish you covered the over and underpasses more since there are many ways of doing them and some of them are better than others. I am curious in regards to the jaguars and the underpasses wouldn’t making a chokepoint they have to go through for a solitary, territorial animal lead to fights?
I love mega projects like this, but hate when it comes at the price of wildlife and local cultures. Thank you for another insightful video. I hope they can listen and change
They won't🤦
Don't look into the highway in Hawaii then...
The project is already being built. The time for objections and changes to the project has passed. If Mexico does not have a process for doing that beforehand, shame on them - but I suspect they do.
@@ems7623 Except there was never time, or opportunity to voice objections, and making changes was never on the table. This government has had an absolute majority in congress since it began, and so objections to anything the government does are just ignored.
The government didn't even make a projection on the train's environmental impact (which was heavily criticised), and instead, the president offered a whole chicken, booze, and tortillas to Mother Earth to ask for permission... Yes... Really...
@@Sebastian_Terrazas Isn't the Globalist left into worshipping mother earth or are they too busy hating a Nationalist party.
It’s about time to see Mexico looking into the future.
Fascinating video. Thank you B1M for bringing this to the world’s attention. I wish that local people there could understand that the progress with this train will outweigh any environmental problems. When it’s completed (train), much of the environmental problems suffered right now, will be corrected in the end, IF the company doing the work is monitored to do so as it’s being done.
Government: We’re building the Mayan Train through here.
The actual Maya: what?!?
Wider tracks or wider right of way? Wider tracks generally means they're using a wider gauge then 4'8 1/2" ( generally referred to as standard gauge). A wider right of way, meaning a wider road bed, would mean stripping more of the jungle away.
Really strikes me here as "perfect is the enemy of good". This is the same reason why we cant get housing built in america. Because with EVERY project it's "I am for this thing, just not how they are making it NOW". That just means things never get built. The train is so much better than highways and roads. This is definitely a good thing
Yup people need to realize their need to grow. The jungle is meaningless for Mexicans and the economy. You can not forever restrict your people for a chance if prosperity because of trees. They will always grow back

I know that area very well. I spent a lot of time there in the late 70s, all of the 80s, and early 90s. I have not been back there in 30 years or so. But what I have seen online all looks like Las Vegas, Nevada, with massive hotels and 24-hour parties. Sad actually... such a rich archaeological area of history, going back thousands of years. 19,000 artifacts found so far during construction, and how many more were just bulldozed over and not found?
The archaeological area are 3 hours away from Cancun and the hotel zone.
If you haven’t been there in 30 years, then you don’t know the area very well
