  • Blown Engine - Contaminated Fuel, now Stranded In The Outback. Kununurra is a lovely town to visit, but being forced to stay here to have a blown engine replaced was never the plan!
    Leaving early to travel to the Bungle Bungles was a great way to start the day. After 150 kms driving, all hell broke loose and the car started to rapidly lose power. A warning light appeared on the dashboard, but it was all too late, the damage had been done.
    Could a costly exercise of replacing the engine been avoided, watch the video and find out. Also check my website and you will find a product that might be a small investment to possibly prevent such heartache.

    Yep, people think I'm nuts adding fuel treatment, but just completed 10000km trip QLD to WA and back - via Birdsville Track and Great Central Road (lots of dodgy fuel stations). I use Fuel Doctor 1ml per L for every tank of diesel. Habit I picked up from having boats in the past wanting to stop growth in the tank and if you have ever cleaned out a old fuel tank you will know what I mean!

      Unfortunately anecdotal evidence is not proof of anything. I have not used a fuel additive ever and I have driven millions of kilometres from when I was 18 until my current old age and never had contaminated fuel.

      I too use this stuff, it's specificly designed to combat water and fungi in fuel. B.T.Y. if I planned such a trip, I'd bne fitting an extra water seperator just in case. You can't rely on fuel in these remote locations.

    You've done the right thing by fitting a second fuel filter.
    However it's obviously not doing its job: Assuming you were changing it regularly?
    A fuel filter shouldn't have let anything through.
    The definition of madness is to keep doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome: You ought to try a few different types of petrol filter.
    High efficiency oil filters exist for oil (look up Trasko, Jackmaster and "centrifugal filters")... so they must exist for petrol.
    Suggestion: You'll find sintered metal filters work pretty well at filtering both dirt and water... and they're relatively cheap.
    Sintered metal filters are reverse flushable... so all you have to do is blow them out and put them back in.
    A good petrol filter is much cheaper than replacing an engine.
    🙂

    I’m 70 and worked on diesels all my life, on small single cyl to big multi cylinder big yellow things, saw fuel contamination all the time, normally they just stop coz water don’t burn right! Yes they sometimes need new injectors and/or pump or maybe the low pressure pump if it common rail, but for a piston to be holed or other damage the engine has to run awhile, has anyone actually looked for water at the high pressure pump and the fuel rail, I didn’t see that in the video.
    Also why does it need a new engine, if it’s got a holes piston, replace the piston or all of them…

    I would never travel without Ultimate Care road service. I'm in SA so we have RAA you only need to use it once and it's worth every penny.
    Our daughter was coming home to Adelaide from Kunanurra after working up there for a year and blew a transfer case just out of Alice Springs. The RAA Ultimate Care put her up for four nights before transporting her safely home as the car couldn't be fixed easily. The car was then trucked home a few weeks later then repaired when the new transfer case arrived from overseas.
    Apart from our annual fee for the Ultimate Care it didn't cost us anything else.
    Hopefully all will work out well when your new motor arrives.

    I am no mechanic by any means, but the guys at the shop seem to be talking nonsense. How would fuel contamination cause the injectors to fail in such a manner that a piston would crack? If contamination would be to magically get pass by all of your filters it would CLOG the injector, not OPEN it in order to destroy the piston.
    The car behaves like it cracked a piston because of old and worn out injectors that caused poor combustion for a looong time and I believe it has nothing to do in particular with your last refuel.
    Check Anthony's Fourby4Diesel channel here, on youtube, for more information regarding this type of engine and what causes piston cracks. He also talks about people getting new engines for free from Toyota because all the cars build in a specific timeframe have flawed pistons!

    Paul, I am an old Territorian. But advise you not to grab a used engine...All done them hard yards up that way.
    Depending the age of your old engine, toss that coin first prior to New or Rebuilt of your own, as you know yours and not knowing ex dismantling yard.
    With my travels, I always retain fuel receipts as a come back to servo insurance for similar to your dilemma.
    And, am amazed how you twin fuel filter system failed....Heck, I'd be knocking on their door super quick mate, as they should have prevented fuel contaminate by blocking and starving engine...check it out real quick before your final decision.
    That fuel additive...err umm..duh, first time having heard of it as a protective measure.
    But, It is what it is...your decision mate. But but do not back off, as someone somewhere is responsible.
    All the best cobber, and hope your vehicle has a speedy recovery....Cheers.

    Oh Paul...I feel your pain! Contaminated fuel in Canberra, blown BT50...repairers (Queanbeyan Diesel) have been absolutely fantastic in guiding my way through insurance claims, assessor inspections, etc. Chemical analysis of fuel (required by insurance company) revealed water and algae contamination. Insurance company (Budget Direct) have been on side throughout this 9 week mess and hopefully my "you beaut big blue ute" comes home tomorrow with a reconditioned engine. Thing is, the fuel came from THE biggest fuel outlet in Canberra (at least a B-double of diesel per day I understand) - certainly not some shitty little servo out in the sticks. Love the kilt - have three of my own...Kununurra not too hot though? In any case, good luck mate...

  • @BenMitro
    @BenMitro Рік тому +3

    Cool as a cucumber! I guess you have had time to digest the situation Paul. All the best with all that. That was great info about fuels and contamination. You almost want to pump some diesel in a clear bottle before you fill your tank after rains. Fuel will float on water so if you wait long enough, you will see if its contaminated. If its good, just pour it in the tank, if not you've saved an engine. Wow! What a saga.

    • @BenMitro
      @BenMitro Рік тому +1

      That magic stuff you pour in your tank I think is a dispersant that binds to the water molecules and can then flow through the engine with minimal impact...but it does depend on how much water is in the fuel as to how much you need to put in and if there is too much water, then you really have to drain the tank. So it comes back to checking the fuel first. Perhaps someone in the know can correct me?

  • @dennisfromoz6436

    P.S. Never fill your vehicle, petrol or diesel if a tanker is dropping a load, as that stirs up super amounts of contaminates and debris in bottom of servo tanks.

    Sorry you've had this experience Paul. I know a lot of 4WD owners install a secondary fuel filter as a pre-filter (30 micron). However, if it doesn't have a water trap and alarm built-in, by the time the main filter alarm activates....it's too late and the damage has already been done :( I had a Diesel Care secondary "post" filter installed (5 micron) and this will supposedly stop the water from getting past this filter, or at least give you sufficient time to shut down the motor before any damage is done. Plus, I use Fuel Doctor in every tank of diesel and carry a few spare filters with me.

    Fuel contamination is a very real problem. In April 2021 we crossed the Nullabore heading to Perth with car trailer. I fortunately filled at the SA WA border. At the next fill point Eucla people were filling with a fresh load of diesel... Accept as we found out when we returned the tanker had some how put petrol into the servo diesel tank! This created a major problem. So I am always careful especially outback to check the quality of the fuel to see that it is the right stuff and that it looks okay. Another huge issue is the extreme wet weather Australia had been experiencing. I would be very careful here also. This is a major problem I hope the insurance company comes to the party.

    That's a real blow, Paul. I hope the insurance company sort things out quickly for you. Keep on 'em, daily calls at least if you can. At least you have a hire car to get about with for a couple of weeks.
    I use Fuel Doctor for treating the diesel. Also, I run a Fuel Manager 30 micron pre-filter with water bowl and sensor, with warning light in the cab. The factory filter also has a water sensor in it, and there is about 1m of fuel line between the two. Hopefully(!) the Fuel Manager picks up most of it first, collects in the bowl, and the warning light comes on before the factory dash light comes on.
    A "Mr Funnel" might be worth buying as well. The F3 and F8 model have an option of a flexible spout to go on for use at the servo, though it takes a little more time to fill up this way. You'll see the water captured in the funnel if it's there.

    Hey mate, I'd for sure get a new engine from Japan. The wait might be long but its well worth it. You never know with second hand engines. Rebuilt ones are good but if you have the option for a new one, I'd take a new engine. Having a new engine, I'd say Increases the value of the car especially if that engine comes straight from Japan.

    Mate go back to the servo and have a chat to them. They can test the tank by putting a paste on the bottom of the dip stick and it will show if there is water in the tank. If there is water you have a good case for compensation. I’m in the fuel industry and can say they should be routinely checking the tank daily for water contamination, sounds like they haven’t been doing that. While fuel additives are not 100% on water they certainly help. They also clean the fuel system and injectors of various moulds and contaminants and are well worth using. F10 and Diesel Doctor are 2 popular ones.Your problem involves a significant amount on money and your should pursue it as far as possible even to the point of asking legal advice.
    Good luck.

      There is a reason trucks use it and not petrol. You just cannot get the torque out of an equivalent petrol motor. Try towing a caravan with a 2.0 L petrol motor compared with approx 2 L being a standard size for diesels and towing.

    Pre filters are logically not a good idea. Try a Diesel Care POST filter, the huge benefit is when the water light goes on you still have a good chance to stop the car before the post filter water trap also fills and wrecks engine. Some so called Industry experts reckon pre filters are best but for this one reason as explained above they are not the best option. Diesel Care has been post filtering for decades. I have used a 5micron one for about 10 years with no issue.

    • @teeanahera8949
      @teeanahera8949 Рік тому

      I have just been reading the Repco advice on diesel fuel filtering and indeed they say the 20 or 30 micron factory filter should do the heavy lifting FIRST and then the 2 micron (in my case) comes second to pick up what was missed in the factory filter. 1 to 5 micron particles wreck injectors.

    Simple question, why isn't fuel comprehensively filtered at the refinery then the fuel tanker and then the fuel Bowser ? We don't accept dirty drinking water so why do we tolerate this ? New cars should have all the necessary filters to stop contaminated fuel getting anywhere near the motor. And don't get me started on the price of diesel when apparently it is a bi- product of making petrol! I remember when diesel was always half or less than the price of petrol !

    How could bad fuel do a piston in?

  • @psterling8404
    @psterling8404 4 місяці тому

    If it was really contaminated fuel - water - then it would be in the bottom of one of the filters. In any case the fuel tank should have been dropped to confirm the reason. Did you find evidence of water.
    These Hilux engines crack pistons regularly - you need to prove it was water and not a injector problem.

    Can insurance cover a blown motor

    Paul did the servo accept any responsibility for the blown engine?

    Hi Paul, are you suggesting that the new motor may be covered by your comprehensive insurance or the roadside assist?

    • @teeanahera8949
      @teeanahera8949 Рік тому

      Roadside assist will never cover an engine. Comprehensive insurance cover will only cover a new engine if you have a “proper” insurer. All the cheaper insurers will have a clause excluding engines. So RACQ and equivalent in each state probably are the best fit as they will cover your roadside assist and new engine claim. Our house got hit by a car, in fact it wiped out the adjoining fence with the neighbours. RACQ gave us $3000 for a fence repair with no excess. The neighbours who had a cheaper insurance company got $600 and had to pay the excess.

    I’ve given you a thumbs up but it’s really a thumbs down for your situation. I had 2 loads of dirty fuel in 8 months of each other and both times it was an injector pump and injectors. I did everything right, kept receipt’s but both times the servo’s denied any wrongdoing. My insurance company covered it but I still had to pay the excess as apparently they had no luck with the service stations. The second one took 5 months to resolve as they insinuated I did it myself to try and get the car written off because apparently nobody gets 2 dirty tanks of fuel in 8 months.
    I’ve since fitted a water watch alarm plus extra filter and as others have stated use fuel doctor religiously. My water watch alarm saved me once after being fitted for 4 years, every time you start the car the alarm sounds as a self check and then it’s quite imagine my surprise after 4 years and it goes off cruising on the freeway, I pulled straight over and checked and sure enough water had just stated to fill my pre filter .
    Hope things work out for best of luck. Paul

    Narr, just pay for towing and look after yourself. NRMA has too many fancy restrictions to benefit themselves, they will dump you at a dealer and walk away. They will just want to sell you expensive parts and new engines. Modern mechanical s too complex for the NRMA man, total waste of time.

    I just took my 200 up the Kimberley then down through the NT, used fuel additive every fill up and the only drama was a blocked fuel filter nearing Port Augusta on the way home. Anyone who’s interested check out the company Cost Effective Maintenance.
