I'm currently working on a spiritual successor to WOTM in my own time. It can't use kaiju from the game sadly, but I have replacements, homages to classic B-movie monsters. I'd love to add mod support. :) Oh and let's not forget ironing out the glitches and bugs! Small hint that doesn't seem to be anywhere, if you press select/taunt while your energy is flashing red and blue your fists, claws, or talons, will start glowing red/orange and your attacks will be stronger and faster along with increased movement speed
I played this game way too much when I was younger. I spent ages unlocking everything when I probably could have just used a cheat code... Here are some tips for you Matt, if this is popular enough for another video: -Every monster can sprint by double-tapping and holding forward. This can be used even when locked-on. You can press heavy for a tackle. -Grabs have pummels, but grabbed monsters can struggle, draining the grabber's stamina. If you run out of stamina, you drop the monster, and you can't recover stamina for a while. -Pressing toward and heavy (or is it back?) in the air is a universal dive attack. -'Smash Attacks' exist. Pressing back+heavy while locked on gives you a launcher. The hard-knockdown gives you a chance to run, if you need to. -Scattered around most maps are quite large tanker lorries (black tanker, white vehicle), which explode when attacked or thrown for good damage, and leave a damage-over-time pool of fire where it landed. -When buildings are destroyed grabbable weapons can drop: girders are probably the strongest physical weapons for how fast they are, sharp poles and radio towers impale monsters who don't block, stunning them and allowing for an escape or a free combo (these are best thrown closer to enemies, because the accuracy gets worse the further away they are). *-Finally (this is one of my favourite discoveries in the game): If you damage EVERY building on Baytown, an earthquake occurs and half of the city falls into the earth, changing almost the entire map. It's great!* EDIT: I remembered that if you're knocked into the air, pressing 'block' when your monster tumbles in an up-right position lets you tech, so you don't take additional fall damage and the knock-down.
Surprised to see that you didn't Raptros, but yeah, he and Zorgulon are unlockable characters. Something I really liked about the game was also the unlockable costumes, which helped make the roster not feel quite as small, since a lot of them could look pretty different: A lot of characters have Cyborg/mecha outfits, and each character has 1 costume that's a totally different character model or theme. Togera has a devil one, Congar becomes an Ice Golem, Kinsectclops has a Fish-Man one, Ultra V's is a more Sailor moon rather then a Gundam inspired mecha, etc. A lot of the levels also had unique interactable elements events that were hidden, like you can trigger an Earthquake which opens up fissures on one stage or the meltdown on the reactor level you saw at the end, etc.
I haven't played this game in like 15 years, but I distinctly remember there was an island level where you could trigger a volcanic eruption and cover a sizeable chunk of the map in lava
@@dalecal1129yep. It’s the volcano level, you know it when you see it. I used to always divebomb that shit to trigger it with Raptros. That and you can trigger a tsunami in another level
Imagine a remake with larger maps, better controls, slightly larger and faster monsters, more monsters on screen(like 8), more playable monsters(maybe have monsterfied PS exclusive protagonist and enemies), better destruction physics and online. One could hope :/
Fun fact: Incognito Entertainment had the opportunity to use the Godzilla licence, but passed on it because Toho wanted the monsters 400 feet tall, which would've made the environment less interactive. Also I gotta say I like the idea of larger maps, but make them too large and you'll have a hard time chasing down the enemy.

I would love a 'What Happened?' for War of the Monsters. It feels like one of those games that should be one of those greatest hits for the PS2 that everyone knows about but it only seems like me and a few other people have even played the thing.
I would to. I'd love to see any unseen concept art left over from development too. Mike Giam, one of the artists, mentions stacks and stacks of concept art was made for it.

GIGABASH does an amazing job by combining War of the Monsters and the old Godzilla fighting game trilogy. Not only can you climb buildings but you can also pick them up. Especially buildings that are 5 times your size. You can even use military war machines are long ranged weaponry. Let’s not forget that you can also become super large as an S class titan.

This game had some super awesome alternate skins for the characters. The best one was if you had a save file of Twisted Metal: Black on the same Memory Card, you got a Sweet Tooth Outfit for Agamo; Complete with Sweet Tooth laugh.
Aaaah yes War of the Monsters! I loved this game as a kid. Played it so many times. Really good and dumb fun, loved the chosen design references too. I personally liked the Mazinger knock-off the most.

Thee greatest monster fighting game ever made. Why this was never continued is beyond me, maybe the monster designs were too clinche but the combat and gameplay isn't. This, next gen consoles, near open world level of map design. Or they could just use the engine to create the next Attack on Titan game.
The monsters were designed to be homages to classic movie monsters, hence why they look like they came from the 50s. Honestly I like the designs. Some monster designs in games and movies go over the top and have too much going on.
What I loved most about this game, is that you can level and decimate the entire arena. I'm talking ruins and debris everywhere...Hell I remember the first time I was crushed to death by a collapsed building...

Unfortunately, due to lack of money right now, I couldn't get it. So, thank you Matt for the nostalgia trip. Also, the dragons are definitely unlockable alongside another monster. There's also a secret skin for Agamo. I'm not sure if you're aware of that. Oh, and you weren't supposed to beat the plant boss like that. Kineticlops is my favorite. Here's some trivia Kineticlops is also a playable character in Downhill Domination. Should of ask if they could have had Charade from Soul Calibur 2 So two one eyed monsters could both race each other. lol Also Agamo's fourth skin is Sweet Tooths car that transforms into a robot. You can either use cheats to unlock him or have a copy of Twisted Metal black complete the game and using Sweet Tooth.
This game was great but frustrating, the controls weren't great and the targeting was trash. The aesthetic was fantastic though, love the old fashioned cinema style. It'd be really cool if they remade it or did some kind of sequel.

Loved the video! A thing you didn't mention is that some maps have disasters. In one map you can destroy a alien ship that will cause a tsunami to happen soon after. In another map you can destroy some key buildings to cause an earthquake that will change the map drastically.
The absolute fucking irony of reading this video title, when a week ago I was saying how Godzilla vs King Kong should hoppfully spin up a new remake of war of monsters. PLEASE YES
One of my favorite games back in the 90s was King of the Monsters 2. 2d monster brawler with a bit of grappling mechanics like the WWF wrestling games of the day. Great music too! It’ll fit the Kaiju roll you’re going on Matty. Try to find the Neo Geo version, it’s vastly superior to all the other ports. Emulation, of course, you don’t need to spend a ton of money for 1 game.
Still the best Giant monster/ GOdzilla game ever made. I still play it on the PS4 for pizza night with my friends from time to time and it's always a good time.
I remember being the happiest kid when I FINALLY got this game along with Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. My favorite character was Robo-47 but now it's KINETICLOPS
In that first boss, you can climb the rock pillars to avoid his spinning attack, and when he does that attack where he stands in place and fires two cannons at you, you can avoid those by getting too close to him for the weapons to point at you
I remember coming across this game when i was like 6 or 7 by total accident and i honestly have never played a game since that gave me the same excited feeling this bomb ass game did.

This game is fuckin rad, I remember having the best time playing VS with my cousin when we were kids, should totally play to see the unlockable monstars. A retrospective would be pretty sweet for this too :)
The alien b-movie idea for the first pipeworks Godzilla game was mainly because that game was mostly referencing the showa era of Godzilla movies. Most of the roster was originally from that era. The name of the game is the same as the movie Destroy All Monsters. Which was about aliens invading earth, mind controlling all the monsters on monster island and unleashing them onto the cities of earth in order to conquer it. Destroy All Monsters Melee is just a video game version of Destroy All Monsters but with an updated monster roster.
I wanna see more of this as I used to play this game so much when I was younger. You're close to the end and all the skins and characters are great to play so I would highly suggesting finishing this and playing more!
Love this game! Quick tip if you ever come back to it Matt: for the boss that does the spinning lariat, if you toss that big boulder in the stage at him it should interrupt
It's nice when they give monsters gimmicks, like the snes godzilla fighter, with biolante unable to jump, but able to make 'shields' to block damage, or Mothra just outright flying constantly.
Man, I loved this game as a kid. Me and my friends would play all the time, and curse the lack of four players options. We also made the race to the UFO in the Japan map our own take the flag game, because as soon as someone got there, the Tsunami was coming.
This game is too slept on! I grew up on rampage and fighting games and when I first played this I was instantly in love I received this game bundled with my first PS3 and Genji: days of the blade😂
Do approve. Used to love this game back when it was out. My and my brother used to have some of the most epic 20 minute fights. Worth purchasing still.
this was the first monster fighting i played as a kid. Togera was my go-to monster to play as. I really wished they remade this game and released it on all platforms with better graphics and both couch and online co-op.
This game is what Rampage World Destruction wanted to be! I love this game its a great two-player and had some good ideas and graphics. Sadly overlooked, be great online I reckon.
holy shit, memory unlocked. Kineticlops was a secret character in Downhill Domination? A Mountain bike racing game. I loved that game. might be worth a flophouse play
The closest the Pipeworks games came to having bosses was in Unleashed; the crystal towers (which were more annoying than anything else), the Vortaak Mothership (which just hovered San Francisco and waited for you to destroy it), the giant Critical Mass King Ghidorah (who was otherwise no different from playable and pathetically easy), the Gotengo (mistakenly called the Atoragon), and the Story Mode version of SpaceGodzilla who could spawn a circle of like ten crystal pillars around himself rather than one at a time, and only have two at most. There's a mockup of a giant machine drilling into the ground for Save the Earth, which was intended for the Story Mode, but the whole mode got scrapped and the machine obviously wasn't present in the final. The railshooter levels were salvaged from the Story Mode, IIRC.
Incognito said no to Godzilla because Toho wanted them to make the monsters larger, which would have meant reworking the whole game and saying goodbye to the interactive environments which make War of the Monsters so unique.
Fun fact: I've spoken with the lead dev for this game. He would be very interested in doing a sequel or revival of some kind. I believe something along those lines was pitched to Sony a few years ago as well, but nothing seems to have come of it.

I'm working on a spiritual successor in my free time if that's exciting for you!
This is by far my favorite game of all time.
This game looks super nostalgic despite me never having played it.
I grew up on rampage and fighting games and when I first played this I was instantly in love
I received this game bundled with my first PS3 and Genji: days of the blade😂
Do approve. Used to love this game back when it was out. My and my brother used to have some of the most epic 20 minute fights.
Worth purchasing still.
I would like it if you did a Retrospective episode on this game as well as another play through as the giant ape. Thank you for all the videos, Matt.
This is a game from my childhood that held up. Beat it on PS4 in one sitting and felt great.
this was the first monster fighting i played as a kid.
Seeing anything kaiju related makes me immediately think about project GG
What a coincidence, Neo gamer actually uploaded a behind the scenes making of for War of the Monsters,
Hey Matt seems you forgot to do your Wha Happen or Retrospective video of this one you mentioned a few times.
Such a great game. Shame we never got more.
Absolutely adored this game growing up
I love this game. Me and my friends used to just break buildings instead of actually fight each other in vs. Good times.
Incognito said no to Godzilla because Toho wanted them to make the monsters larger, which would have meant reworking the whole game and saying goodbye to the interactive environments which make War of the Monsters so unique.
I adore this game and have been waiting most of my life for a sequel. It is awesome that it's on the ps4 store at least
The best monster fighting game! We need more games like this one!
The boss’ name is Goliath Prime, the second one is Vega, and the last one is Cerebulon
I had the making of for this game on a demo when I was younger. Watched it a bunch of times, love this game!
10:32 That was so badass.
This game was my absolute jam as a kid
This game is an absolute cult classic
had a rly good time w/ this one when i was a kid, it's nice to see it again, id love to have it on steam w/ local mp or something
I remember the 3 maxibrain aliens towards the end. Most irritating fight lol but somehow still fun
I have this game. An absolute masterpiece, I have never found another monster v monster game that comes close
I loved this game so much and wanted to play as the first boss so bad. I remember looking up cheat codes for hours in youthful hopefulness
