Had a RD400F. Everytime I parked it somewhere and found a note on it during the 80's, the note said the same exact thing with a name and phone number. "If you EVER decide to sell this, please call me. I had the same one before, and regret selling it." 20 years later I sold it to a guy, who said the same exact thing. At the time, He had 3 of them, all in-complete, and had been looking for 2 decades. The 79 was very popular for racing, so many of them had been crashed, and 79 Daytona parts were getting rare. Mine was nearly perfect. He brought a small suitcase, that held a microfiche reader, and he looked up the part #'s of a cracked intake boot, and a side cover and dialed the local yamaha dealer by memory. Got the replacement part costs, offered me less the exact amounts, and we shook hands. No-one deserved that RD more than he did. It was an honor to sell it to him.

Bought mine off the showroom floor in 1979. I was 15 but my dad got me the loan. I paid him off and put 32000 miles on it. Should have kept it. It took me to school every day in Seattle from 1979 to 1982.

You had One of The Coolest Dad's In The World, to let you ride that to school, for all of your high school years. I bet you were popular, amongst your friends, with a bike like that! My favorite place in the world to be is Bainbridge Island, Wa. I'm. 49 now, and have been going up there my whole life. Love WA Weather. Here in New Orleans, La, it's a humid volcano, where, at times, have to use your A/C for Christmas, which takes the fun out of it. I much prefer the Northwest and East Coast Weather over hours. Take Care.

I had an 75 rd250. Had 3k on it when I traded my Yamaha dt250 even for it. At 18k I put a 350 top end on it. Put fiberglass reeds on it, gold anodized heads, chambers, k&n air filters, and was mildly ported. Woo Hoo!!!!! What a ride. Had it set up with wheelie bars, cafe bars, rear peg gear shifter. Cops would pull me over just to look at it. Sold it with 33k on it. Rode its wheels off. I had the most fun on this bike of all the bikes I’ve owned.

One of my favorite bikes definite eye candy I had just got an rd 200 from a friend who was going to college for cheap was riding around by the beach in my home town Milford CT saw someone sitting at the beach with a Daytona special that he just bought from Libby's Yamaha pulled up and told him man nice bike so after talking for a bit he asked if I would like to go for a ride we did he also let me ride his bike and he rode mine . We became friends and have been friends since that was 1979 .2023 he still has that Daytona special and I have an rz 350 still going on rides now and then just a beautiful iconic bike from my youth

My daily commuter from 1978 to 1982 was a RD400C red and white paint scheme. Toured all over the country on it and it never missed a beat. Like others have said, I should have never sold it, almost impossible to find one here in New Zealand, that's in good going order.

My first vehicle was a new 78 RD400E for $1189 out the door. It got stolen so I saved and bought I had a blue 77 RD400D with 1200mi for $900. Modified everything to go faster and later got Daytona Special cylinders and shipped it out to have a full race Spec II engine built. Stock RDs were not seen as collector pieces nor "commute bikes" but were a starting point to build a streetable road racer .

My First 'Big'bike (0ver 250cc) This was my exact bike except mine was 1980 RD 400G, all white with gold stickers. Only thing I didnt like about it was the vibrations between the legs at 3-4000 revs cruising at around 50-60 mph (80-100 ks in Oz) Acceleration so easy, just about beat anything up to regular speed limits and loved that powerband (3500-5000) (plus a small lower powerband around 2000-2500 before becoming a bit lumpy before main powerband kicks in.

I put DG pipes on my Daytona back in the day, they looked great and sounded mean, but the performance gain wasn't impressive. The fact the baffles fell out within the first two months of riding didn't help either. Eventually, I crushed a pipe in a crash and put the original pipes back on and dammed if the bike wasn't faster !

I'm lucky enough to work in the motorsport manufacturing industry here and have even swung wrenches on one of the tz750's that Jack Findlay raced in the 70's.
Yeah the 250 2t street bikes were nicknamed "kid killers" for a while. I've got two 1989 rgv250's at the moment and geez they're fun.
