Bike Startup & Idle @ 4:20
Full Throttle Ride @ 7:20
Rare Cowl Fairing/Cafe Fairing @ 9:40
This numbers-matching, three-owner beauty has only 2320 original miles and has a completely rebuilt motor by Spec II (Spec 2) performance in Sylmar, California in 2010. When they rebuilt the motor they also added Spec II classic expansion, a 2 into 1 K&N air filter/intake, Yamaha Banshee cross-over intake, performance reeds and re-jetted to make it run perfectly.

Sorry guys, I said "RD400D" in the video, this is a RD400F from 1979. Sorry about the confusion!!
I just left you comment and realized you had another vid up that I had already commented on. I just deleted it as I basically said the same thing lol
Hahah! All good man. The RD passion is strong, I get it
Don’t you think the white, was so much better? (Europe, and everywhere but US got white?). Suzuki’s were yellow.
That was strange. The big 4 were almost id’d by colour. (Suzuki was rocking the yellow, when yamahas were silver, in early 70’s). Blame Kenny Roberts I guess?. The colour schemes are very interesting, come to think of it. The silver Honda’s, with a flash of green were pretty (Yamaha used red/black), with the rubber tank strap?. The cyclone was orange (not many of them left). A 76 kx400 , rider I know (how much would that be worth now?), reached terminal velocity, and left earths orbit momentarily (it did cost a testicle or 2 upon landing?). The big single 2t, has nothing comparable sounding. Glad I got to hear it, actually. (They didn’t blow much smoke, took big balls to wear out the rings on those bad boys? Cyclones, etc).
Yeah man, the white is 👌👌👌🔥🔥
In 1979 I bought a Daytona special from Ricky Orlando at the Yamaha shop in Boulder. Two weeks before he won the US stock 400 nationals on the same bike. I loved it. I am looking for another now, just found one in my neighborhood in Washingtin State and I’m going to look at it.
Loved my RD400, allspeed pipes for that extra sound, when I die I'll ride it all over heaven.
Sounds good to me 👍🏻👍🏻
I just love how two strokes don't like to cruise at one speed. Give them gas and they sound so happy. 😍
Just singing!!!
Well when they went to a power valve they altered the exhaust port so it smoothed out under a non pull or off throttle . The Suzy RG500 had rotory valves that let it cruise nice and smooth
Nice!
Hi I have one of these in storage that I bought from a guy in Florida a few years back. I exported it to the IK. It’s only done 5k miles and all original paint etc. This has really inspired me to dig it out and re commission it.
Thanks for putting your bike out there she’s a beauty.
Awesome Mike, that will be a fun project! Nothing like that two stroke twin sound on a motorcycle, cheers!
I love the sound these make at idle. So many have that dent in the tank. The front fenders usually fade a lot.
Yeah it’s a sweet sound
I almost bought one new back in 79. Just before i closed the deal at concord Yamaha a car took a left turn in front of me. That ended my motorcycle days. Thanks for the video.
Dang, so sorry to hear that. Glad you liked the video! I mostly ride dirt these days, street bikes are sketchy with people texting. Take care!!
I knew a guy I went to highshool with that had one,, in Omaha. I suppose there was moe than one in town. I got to ride it a few blocks, and it wasa little scary! Enjoy!
Fun bikes, being the epitome of the air cooled 2 strokes I should have bought one and took care of it like yours has been. The prettiest of the air cooled RD's too IMHO!
Fun rides for sure!!
I had the Shoei on mine also. All black. Made it a great tourer LOL. Also had Koni rear shocks. Still waiting to see some wheelies!
Haha, very nice touring bike for sure hahaha
I had one back in 1979. Man I wish I still had it!
Fun bike!!
I had one back in 1979 . I alao had spec 2 pipes black Tommaselli adjustable clip on handle bars . I miss it very much
I had 4 Yamaha 2 stroke bikes 72 DS7 250 74 RD350 AMD 1984 RZ 500 . I LIKED THE DAYTONA THE BEST.
Nice! For sure, fun bike!
Bought one new and also had clip-on bars, cafe fairing!Rode that thing all over BC Canada 🍁!Wish I still had it!It was a blast!❤
I wouldn't worry about the tools as long as you have the tool box and you do. It's nice to see one close to stock.
Thanks man! She’s a beauty!
Beautiful
Lovely bike you have there, I am in the process of restoring an Aussie (3M4) version and can’t wait to put up a video of it alongside my already restored RD400G
Nice! Sounds fun!
Great vid and totally agree with stripping the pipes. Got me motivated to start refurbishing a 76 RD400 I’ve had stashed away for years. Wish I had a “D” tho!
Awesome man! Fun bikes!
I owned a 1976 RD-400 and in 1978 I rode that bike from Virgie Ky all the way to Fitzgerald Georgia. Had a flat tire outside Johnson City Tenn but a kind man stopped with a pu and hauled me to the bike shop for a tire repair. Lots of gas stops with this trip.
Nice!!! Sounds like a fun ride
I had a 77, 78 and kept the 79, all Canadian spec. Didn't have the weird carb set up like the US bikes had. In storage since the mid 90's. Mint bike, never in the rain with about 5000 miles on it. DG pipes from back in the day. Have original mint pipes also. Surprised your front wheel wasn't lifting when you were on the gas. I could wheelie 1st through 3rd on mine. Really fun bike. Took a 200 mile trip once and only once due to my numb ass. The 77 had a much more comfortable seat but was ugly due to the height compared to the tank. Take that thing out and crack the throttle in second.
They are pretty damn fun!
Is it For Sake?
It’s not, sorry Glen
The 5000 may be correct for the US market which also had the mechanical power-valve, but the same bike was produced for a couple more years for Japan, Europe + in 1980-81. Some of those later bikes were also offered in other colors than the pearl-white red-stripe. It was replaced by the rd350/250LC which was similar in frame-tank, and that was the predecessor of the rd350ypvs or rz350 which had pv cylinders, when the LCs didn't. The LCs were really sweet bikes too. The rd400-F Daytona was the last sold in the US as a 79 till the RZ came in 84? I think.
I purchased one brand new in 1979 and love it. I regret selling.
Sorry to hear that, fun bike!
Ah, 1979. Pop Musik, XTC. Those were the days. (Devo even, And the cars?). Had to be there. (Personally, I treated my rings with a little more tenderness).
every once in a while you gotta clean them out. ;)
Had that exact bike. Neighbor guy owned it and broke the crankshaft. Gave it to me, I sent the crank off and had it repaired. Got it going, fun bike. In under a year the crank broke again. I gave it to a guy who sold it to a guy I think in Nebraska.
Very fun bike!
bought new one 1979 at yamaha seond in state of fla fun bike
nicceee!
DG anodized radial heads
Good stuff
Love those!
I look at the rpm meter it's had a powerful engine..i love this bike..
Lots of fun! Cheers!
Beautiful!
Shoei made the fairing, I had one on my 77 Rd 400. Mine yellow and black very similar to your white and red. Beautiful bike you have.
Awesome, thank you for the info. I did notice Shoei on the screen itself.
Sweet bike man! Love those pipes, considering same setup for my rd400 build. With the cross over tube, filter and pipes. Just giving the engine a bit more power without going nuts
For sure! She rips pretty great for a 40 year old bike! HAHA Enjoy!!
I hear you. Before i took My bike apart i had a ride around town
Allthough not adjusted and with poor condition i was surprised when it goes on the pipe, it flies😁 ton of fun
Cool Daytona!!!! I got a 79 Daytona it's not as nice or stock as yours but man it's a blast to ride.
Right on! Great bikes! Ride safe out there!
The only vehicle that I've ever bought new from a dealership. Melted yesterday in a garage fire. I'm here to mourn...
Damnnn I’m so sorry
Such a different sound than my DG pipes!
Very cool! Would love to hear the DGs
Spec II were The Bomb, back in the day
They sound so good in person!
Something else to consider. If you plan on keeping the bike indefinitely you should buy two sets of spare components for all the specialty parts you put on it. Companies that make them or the availability of those parts tend to disappear sometimes very quickly or unexpectedly. If you plan to ever rebuild that bike you better have those parts coded lightly with oil and sealed with desiccant. Otherwise you might find that motorcycle to be completely unrebuildable should you want to.
lucky lucky man......i envy you.....;)......at auction i wouldnt be surprised if this fetched 15-20 grand
Thanks man, its a pretty beast!
@@SourceADV Hey there! I have the same bike with similar pipes but just found a set of stock exhaust that i will put on soon1 I am not interested in selling mine but curious what you sold yours for...if you don't mind. Just wondering what the value is. Mine has 6500 original miles. thx!
Hey Dave shoot me an email and I’ll let you know hello at SourceADV.com
Cool ❤
Brapppp!
That Is either a shoei or emgo fairing. I have one. And the hardware. If it's a shoei, it's rare. Emgo can be found all day on ebay or Amazon.
It’s shoei, figured it out after the video
I could never get pods to be as crisp as an air box, they won’t breathe
It definitely sacrifices low end and mid, thats for damn sure.
Are you looking to sell it? If so I'm interested. Enjoy it I had identical bike in 1979 i was 17. 59 now i want another one.
Sorry Scott, it’s already gone
I’m with you on that Scott. I had an RD 350 in high school and would love to have another one today at the age of 58. 😎🏁
Spec 2 . Is that owned by Gary Shummach? We all had the monster triples in Southern California all with chambers and beefed up clutch springs. Love the sound of your bike.
Not sure, sorry! Thanks man
Yes, Spec II is owned by Gary Shumake. One of the great two stroke guys out there.
These bikes had a deadly reputation for a reason. For the experienced rider no problem. But because they were cheap ,but for many first time riders it was deadly.
Makes sense, definitely not a beginner bike with a light switch power band like this thing has.
Rd400 daytona
Check where they bought it originally, they may have the supplier of that fairing listed
Someone identified it a little while back, i think it was Shoei
That’s a great bike I have a Spec2 bike. Doing a little swap…. Can’t wait till my engine comes back next month.
@@philiprockwell5580 nice!! They are a ton of fun!
@@SourceADV I’ll be posting tons of videos!!!
Sweet!! Would love to see
Get a fabricator to make you some new fitments for the nose fairing job done
I like the look without the fairing more, but good call!
@@SourceADV Nothing to lose quite easy fitment can take off and put on when ever you want to would be better for longer journeys
How much hp and torque added with expansion chambers...I know the stock engine has 44 bhp?
No idea, sorry, never dyno’d the bike
No the 1979 Daytona is not the D it's the F and it's not the last air cooled 2 stroke they made. It continued in Canada as a RD 400 G. Then they had the LC for a couple years then they came out with the RZ.the Dayton was 49 stock.with the Spec 11 stuff add 8 more easy
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Banshee Balance tube - bolt on as a package with Banshee Reed-Blocks ?
Not sure Glen it was on the bike when I got it.
You still have this bike?
No sir, sold it to someone that really loved it
@@SourceADV in Colorado?
No it went to California
Looks better without the fairing
Agreed!
For sale?
No sorry
It’s called a quarter fairing.
Thanks
is there for sell rd 400
Sorry, no it's not. Take care!
what exhaust do you have on that bike? where can I find one like yours?
Spec 2
I had one. It was stolen... Oh, and mine had the original mufflers.
Sorry to hear that.
Lush bike except for the handlebars
Hahaha, true story, those things are almost ape hangers. Cheers!
