Making my first batch. I'll repost with results. If they turn out tasting anything like the brine, I'm sure they'll be tasty. Followup: Its been over 2 weeks now and I love them. I did leave out the sugar because I don't like anything sweet pickled. I also left out the red pepper flakes on fear they would be too hot. After eating some, now I believe I should have added for the extra heat. So awesome recipe, reminds me so much of the "Hot Mamma" pickled sausages in the convenience stores. Followup2: I've made my 3rd batch now learning a few things. Adding lots of pepper flakes for the heat I like. I've switch from hot dogs to a combination of the little smokies and cooked Johnsonville Beef Brats. I've learned that poking holes in the meat with a fork or cutting them up speeds up and makes the brine distribute inside the meat more evenly. All I can say is wow, loving the recipe.
Sounds great! I love trying new recipes too. It helps to see how others have done it. Thank you very much for your updates. The little technique of piercing the hot dogs with a fork is very helpful.
I have made these many times. As well as salt pickles with sugar. There is not enough sugar to make these sweet, instead it enhances the salt and vinegar, in both this recipe and my salt pickles. You would have to use CUPS of sugar in a recipe like this to overpower the salt and vinegar.
Ma’am you remind me very much of my grandmother. Beautiful southern woman with an AMAZING knack for cooking. I miss her and her cooking so much, thank you for all of your wonderful videos and keeping southern traditions alive. God bless you
i know your video is about pickling hot dogs but i want to comment on your chihuahua . what a sweet little dog. i am so amazed at how well animals adjust to adversity and how they are so loved. thank you for being one of those kinds of people . so many are not . i am also going to try your recipe for little smokies as my meat.
I use to eat the franks like this in bars.. and as a child the corner store had them also. Your voice is so calming and your accent is endearing.. keep up the good work!
I used to work in a meat market/deli in Michigan. We had a gallon jar of pickled baloney on the meat counter. Yummy! None of the video creators say whether to store in the fridge or not.
I make pickled Polish Kielbasa, white vinegar, sugar onions, garlic and pickling spice. I think this recipe you shared is a game changer! I'm going to make it tomorrow!
I haven't even watched this video as soon as I saw her I gave it a thumbs up. She seems like the sweetest thing ever I bet she can swing a mean switch though.
Thank you for the recipe I cannot wait to try it.. I never measure anything so it is hard for me to give a recipe accurately but I just about died laughing when you said, that looks like about a teaspoon, that looks about like a tablespoon , then the very next instant you reached right beside you and got measuring spoons and measured the pickling spice! So funny.
IVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE AND WE EAT EVERYTHING PICKLED INCLUDING VEGGIES. I THINK THIS WILL BE DELICIOUS THOUGH SO I WILL BE MAKIN THEM. I'M GONNA BE SUBSCRIBING TO YOUR CHANNEL ALL BECAUSE OF THIS RECIPE. I LIKE YOUR STYLE. I AM A SOUTHERNER AND WE SOUTHERNERS LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS TYPE OF FOOD. NOW IM GOIN TO SEE IF I CAN FIND A CHICKEN AND DUMPLINS AND A GREENS RECIPE FROM YOU. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! I ABSOLUTELY 😍 THIS!
When I make up my hot pepper medley I always have left over brine so I jar up summer sausage, bologna and hotdogs, those are almost as popular for gifts as the peppers!
Can’t wait to try your recipe!! I already love making pickled eggs, my family will love the bologna. I love your channel, I grew up in a very small mountain town and your recipes bring me back home. Thank you ❤️
have had my husband eating this for several months i use the little smokes in mine. just about to pore out old brine and make new. thanks for the recipe. smiles
Just made this exactly as you said but did 2 cups rice vinegar and 2 cups white. I also threw in two cans of beet juice and put some eggs in. Probably wont be as potent as your batch but they should taste great. I also cut the ends off each hotdog, then cut it down the middle but not all the way in half, like a butterfly shrimp. That way the juice can hit that center hard.
We really enjoyed this video and we are looking forward to seeing more of your videos. We are also looking forward to making some of these and hopefully very soon!
Wow 👏 love me some old school pickled almost anything 😊 eggs and sausages are #1, FYI Frank's Red Hot is definitely the best flavored hot sauce on the market for sure . People pass it up because it's also the most expensive 🙃
Jan, I did a huge (accidentally) batch of these hot dogs and kept them at home and took two jars to church for Bible study. They were divine! They are gone already and people are asking me to make them for the holidays. Your down-to-earth style is such a blessing! Thank you for these great videos.
I was born and raised in northeastern Pennsylvania. I loved getting pickled sausages at convenience stores. I'm in Houston, Texas now and haven't thought to look for them but you made me want it,so I'll have to look now lol
Definitely taking notes on this. My husband also loved pickled eggs and I haven't yet found a brine recipe he likes so this will be good to try. I'll ask him about the meats, that is something I haven't heard of here up north but his folks are from the South so he may be familiar with it and missing it. Edit: I asked hubby and he thinks I'm crazy. He says they are at all the bars and gas stations and you can buy individual packets of them in grocery stores. And yes, he likes them.
Let me know if you decide to make this and how hubby likes it. I love the brine in this recipe. I hope you have a great Friday and thanks for watching. :)
I made a batch of this 10 days ago and I just tried them. I do like the flavor a lot, but I feel that the flavor hasn’t penetrated to the middle yet. I’m guessing that will just take more time? I stabbed all of the little smokies with a fork prior to pouring the liquid over them hoping to get the flavor in there sooner. I will wait until it’s been a month and try another jar. In the meantime I will eat this jar. Next time I will add a little more spice for mine. My mom can’t handle too much heat so this recipe is just perfect for her. Thank you for sharing this recipe, it’s a keeper ❤️
Jan this brings back a nice memory - my MIL made this and would give us a jar of it - we loved it - I have not thought of it in years - she made the bologna, also boiled chicken and pigs feet and we'd eat them on white bread or saltines - they are the best - thank you so much for reminding me - I have everything to make it right now, I am going to impress my hubby so much!
Thanks for sharing this, I love your take on it. One of the only good memories from my grandmother was her 'Bruine'. She made it from scratch including part of a pig my family would never use other than for her recipe. While it was cooking we didn't want to go near the kitchen but the end result was divine. Christmas in Australia is usually really hot so we often had cold meats for lunch, bruine was one of our favourites.
I have made this many times only with a slight change in the ratio of water/vinegar. It's wonderful, I do try and let mine "cure" in the fridge for 30 days before opening. How long do they last? Around here only around 1 day after the curing time. And yes it's a southern thing.
Sounds really good! Can't wait to try this. I'm getting frankfurters and slicing them like bologna ring. It's hard to find bologna ring. Thanks for recipe.
This is so delicious and I think it is much better than store bought. The hotter you like it the more hot sauce you put in it. I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching. :)
Hi Jan! This is so interesting to me because it seems like it could be a Southern dish. It looks and sounds really delicious! I’m in Seattle and have lived in a few other locations in the US but mainly around here. I’m going to try this for my great grandkids! ❤️ to you and yours 😊
Thank you Jan. The wee little dogie scooting across the floor must get spoiled with all these marvelous treats. Who would of thought lunch meat could be so appetizing? I will defiantly give these a go. Blessings from Australia XXX
Jan this looks so good and my husband loves pickled eggs so he should enjoy something like this. I have several mason jars from when I was pickling cucumbers. They did good at first then the weather turned dry and the cucumbers dried out and died. Now I know something to do with my jars. Thank you dear friend 💛
Clara I bet your husband would really enjoy this done with eggs. After several days of the bologna and hot dogs soaking in the brine I tasted them and oh goodness how good! I prefer eggs in pickled beet juice but lots of people like them done this way. I hope you get a chance to make the eggs for your husband. Have a great day sweet friend. :)
I would love to make this, but I wouldn't want to make that much. I would like to make 1 jar; what would the measurements be if I wanted to make just 1 jar?
Hi I stumbled onto your video this is such a yummy looking surprise. Wow thanks I'm definitely doing this for sure. If you vacuum seal your jars you can then hide some from your family and just replace them empty jars. Thanks
Jan, due to all the acidity how long will this prolong the shelf life of the meats? I'm thinking this might be a way to save something if the power is off and you have a cold storage room. Your thoughts?
Can you do a hot water bath for long term storage. If you can how long do you suggest doing the hot water bath for. I'm new to canning. Would love to make some. Thank in advance.
Making my first batch. I'll repost with results. If they turn out tasting anything like the brine, I'm sure they'll be tasty.

J Kintner the sugar must be there for balance it does not make it taste sweet. it is not sweet pickles that would be cups and cups of sugar.
Sounds great! I love trying new recipes too. It helps to see how others have done it. Thank you very much for your updates. The little technique of piercing the hot dogs with a fork is very helpful.
Can I come to your house for supper?

@@kentuckygirl8282 Thanks for the tip. I will try a small batch.

Thanks for sharing this recipe. Your voice is so soothing...sometimes I just put your video on my phone and go to sleep listening.

I just made these today and I can’t wait to eat them!
I tried this for Thanksgiving. My Mom really liked it. I thought it could be hotter, so for my jar, I will add some Tabasco. Did bologna and smokies.

Oh & always pronounced Bologna Bologne like the commercial did/does,but I think You are saying it absolutely correct! I'm going to do that!
this is the first time Ive seen this homemade. It looks like it would be so much better than the store bought stuff!
This is so delicious and I think it is much better than store bought. The hotter you like it the more hot sauce you put in it. I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching. :)
Hi love the video. How long is the shelf life to these pickling meats and once open how long to eat the meats. Thanks.
Where did u get those little jars with pink tops...I like those for holding salt, pepper, and the spices I use, almost daily. Lol. Ty

what did you buy at the salvage food store and because they might not have you made your own?
Michael Howard I asked that same question.
We do eggs and pork hocks up here in Wisconsin. I wouldn't mind trying this with meat. Thanks Jan!
Hi I stumbled onto your video this is such a yummy looking surprise. Wow thanks I'm definitely doing this for sure. If you vacuum seal your jars you can then hide some from your family and just replace them empty jars. Thanks

So good
Can you do a hot water bath for long term storage. If you can how long do you suggest doing the hot water bath for. I'm new to canning. Would love to make some. Thank in advance.
After the brine cools I would pour it in a pitcher. Makes it easier to fill the jars.
Yummy!
