    I have two TYT9800's. They both work great! Just started using one for cross banding, good audio. Had mine for about 3 yrs.

    None of the bands i tested came anywhere near the claimed power output. Other than that , it works as advertised.

      Mine was pretty close to claimed output. It was a little under last time I used it

    Thanks for your review. I'm new to HAM and in the process of buying my 1st mobile radio and looking for a lower priced radio with the detachable front face but a loud speaker both on radio and the microphone.

    Thanks for the video! My friend is going to give me his tyt th 9800 so I can at least get on 10m on hf. I had upgraded from tech to extra last December but have been unable to get an hf rig due to lack of finances. I am looking forward to working 10m and 6m as well as the 2m and 70cm I have been working. This rig looks like it will be pretty easy to operate and fun too! 73 de KI5OLG 😃

      A decent used rig can save you alot of money over new prices. If you havent already, consider joining a local Ham radio club. Many clubs have access to used ham gear from " Silent Keys" to help people in need. Good luck! KX4IG

    I’m just now getting back into amateur radio after many years away. In 2005 or so I had a Yaesu FT-8900 (I think it was) which looked almost identical to this and was at least a tri-band to 6m it might have been a quad. Do these other companies just copy the old Japanese products or is this totally different?

    • @davidky4gm2
      @davidky4gm2  10 місяців тому

      It's quad band 10 meter,6 meter, 2meter and 70cm. It's a clone of the yaesu, unfortunately the quit making those. There are a little of both. Clones and unique models. And glad your back. What's are your favorite modes/ bands?

      @@davidky4gm2 just getting back into things. Doing mobile installs in my side by side and an HF rig in my truck. Just did both the general and extra upgrades so I have a bunch to learn. Most interested in POTA and SOTA on HF, which is part of what drew me back in.

    What does the cross band repeat do for you?

    • @davidky4gm2
      @davidky4gm2  4 місяці тому

      I can transmit on vhf and the radio rebroadcast my signal on uhf. So if I'm talking on a vhf frequency I can use this radio and a handheld and keep talking using a handheld and not stuck on my base radio

    Can you explain the 6 and 10 meter comment? About AM or FM? Was that about Techs not having approval for that band or are those bands useless or can they be used if they are FM? How do I set this so that the heat is not an issue? Just use Med power? Thanks much

    • @WW5RM

      Technicians are limited to CW or SSB Phone only on 10M. The FM portion of 10M is in the General Class section of the band. Its where the repeaters are. Technicians are limited to 28.000 - 28.500 mhz. CW from 28.000 - 28.300, USB from 28.300 - 28.500. The repeaters / FM portion is 29.500 - 29.700 i believe. I have to look at the Band Plan for the exact freq of the FM section.
      But you can still listen to the FM portion. Being at or near the top of the sun cycle you probably will hear some repeaters.
      6m is a similar thing except Technicians have full privileges on 6M. CW, SSB and FM are broken down into sections. So you need to know where to listen to hear anything. You might see signals and noise but you wont be able to understand them unless they are on FM too. I forget the 6M FM Simplex freq but ive heard guys say they made DX contacts on it. 52.525 mhz i think. But SSB is the better mode for DX.
      Also. I read in the specs this radio will RX AM on multiple bands. So you can listen to CB and the Air band too. But thats receive only.

      @@WW5RM thanks for explaining. So, I plan to keep going and get my general but my concern is feeling like I really don’t have a quad band if I can’t transmit on AM. So, I don’t hear much about 6 M but do most folks just have a separate radio for 10 M as I am hearing that 10 M is a very popular band?

    • @WW5RM
      @WW5RM 4 місяці тому

      @@chipfornaris Awesome! Upgrade! =]
      Yeah its not much activity on AM anywhere. 80M AM is about the only place ive heard any activity. SSB is tons more efficient.
      Most everyone has a HF radio. They cover from 160M - 10M and new modern HF radios cover HF plus 6M. Some even cover HF, 6M, 2M and 70CM. But they are bigger base type radios.
      I run HF mobile and it has 6M but ive never used it.
      Right now 10M is wide open! I talked to numerous countries recently which normally is only done on the lower HF bands. Great stuff!
      For example on 20 and 40M you can usually talk half way around the world +- at certain times of the day. Right now its being done on 10M!
      Plus most of all this is done on SSB, not FM or AM. So you wont do these things with this radio.
      The best DX you will get out of this radio will be through FM repeater (USA, not sure if they even have them overseas). Which isnt considered a "true" contact because you relied upon the power of the repeater. Although it can still be alot of fun especially mobile.

      @@chipfornaris youtube deleted part of my comment.
      6M relies on a different type band conditions than HF. Tropospheric ducting, Sporadic E and Meteor Shower conditions. Which doesnt happen very often.
      10M is much better but requires as bigger antenna. It also has a better line of sight propagation / better range. But that can all depend on your location. The saying is "location, location, location" which affects all RF.
      Bottom line is this radio is limited due to it only can transmit on FM. For a mobile most everyone uses 2M or 70CM on FM. In a small vehicle its hard to mount a HF radio and antenna.
      This radio will work as a base but its limited compared to a HF radio. A HF radio can basically do all bands and all modes, AM, FM, SSB, CW and digital modes.

    • @WW5RM
      @WW5RM 4 місяці тому

      @@chipfornaris Honestly ive always had and prefer a separate radio for HF. These Quad band radios dont give you the features a HF radio does. Its added plus but very limited.
      Plus with multiple radios you can monitor multiple bands.
      But that could all depend on your purpose and location. If you live in range of a 10M FM repeater then it could be a great thing. Just keep in mind you will have to run a multi band antenna or a Duplexer / Diplexer to connect multiple antennas to run multiple bands.
      If you use 2M or 70CM you will incur some loss in the Duplexer with multiple antennas. Probably not a big deal on 2M but 70CM it could be a huge deal.
      Plus its a lot to consider if you plan to use it mobile. If you dont have the room for multiple radios then it might be your only option. Possibly RX only on 6 and 10M.
      I guess it all boils down to your ultimate goal / purpose. Listening to activity usually drives me to upgrade! lol

    One of my faves. I have a 9800 and 2 7900s. The only problem I have had was the speaker went out on one of my 7900s. A $15 plug-in speaker solved that problem. 73 de KR5EBS.
