I bought this after I got my technician class license as a starter radio. Paired up with a j-pole antenna I got from ebay it's been a solid starter radio that I can program with Chirp. Couldn't be happier.
I also wanted a crossband repeater. The additional 1.2 meter and 350 MHz bands were nice extras. I ordered one. Supposedly, it’s actually 2 radios in one box. I’ll find out when it gets here. Not much available on UA-cam regarding setup, practical usage or applications involving new bands/frequencies.
Ya I am a new ham, KN6GZP, and I like the tyt 9800, you can program in 800 repeaters which is cool , I have most of California, all of Arizona, and most of Nevada, and still have room for more, use RT systems programming software and th works great, the quad band antenna I am still playing with, and will figure it out sooner or later, thanks for the video and 73s, starting to play around with QRP also.
@SnappyJon true... I set mine up having them grouped by area, distance and have my more frequently used ones at the beginning of the groups. Then print out a cheat sheet from Chirp with the groups labeled. Then all you have to do is type the 3 digit memory number into the mic.
I have a TYT TH-9800, but I'm not sure whether to put in a go box as a portable repeater. Alteratively, I could put it in my beloved Jeep TJ either as a portable repeater or a regular quad band tranceiver. I just bought a quad band mobile antenna for the TYT TH-9800. A hood/trunk lip mount is included.
Because of the virus I have gotten behind, have you programmed the repeater function is straight forward? I know I just got the power supply in for it...
Diamond of course, also have a screwdriver antenna on the other side with a MFJ control for my HF xiegu g90 running next to my tyt quad band UFH/VHF did I miss anything?
I have a question, have you tried doing a power test on the unit? I'm interested in getting one but I heard there were some slight power differences between the different frequencies. I'm really curious if it can get up to 50 watts on the 10 meter band. If so, that's gonna be some really nice range I'd think. And, another dumb but good question as I haven't yet gotten my license do these things transmit on CB as well? I have a lot of friends who use CB I'd love to be able to talk to with this but I don't know if it can, or if for that matter it's even legal. Thanks.
Mine only actually puts out around 40-42 watts last I checked. But if you're "brave" you can look up the schematic or get a magnifying glass to read the tiny print and pop the top cover to adjust the tiny Phillips head trim pots to increase the power. You're better off at slightly lower wattage for longevity sake anyway though... I've heard mixed reports on whether these actually transmit on 11m aka CB which uses AM not FM. Seems the "advertised AM capability" (even though there's menu settings for it) may have been a lie from what I've read. Either way, different radio services/bands all have separate license rules and restrictions called a "part", like CB which has to follow the "part 95" regs... This is a Ham radio so it's "part 97" so technically it's only "legal" to transmit with on Ham frequencies. I've even heard if for some reason the FCC needs to look at your Ham radio (like if they traced it as the source of some RFI) and find you have CB, FRS, MURS, GMRS or Fire frequencies ETC loaded and unlocked so you could "possibly" transmit on them I've heard of them crucifying people and being in serious legal hot water for that. Then again I've heard of TONS of Fire crews (mostly volunteer) that don't have the budget for the official Motorola walkie talkies using Baofeng UV-5R Ham radios, which are only $25 bucks a pop vs $200+ per radio. Haven't heard of them getting in trouble...
I've heard this radio is a hit or miss based on the reviews of it I've seen. Is it true for the other hams that have it before I purchase it? Also, does it perform well when used as a mobile radio in a vehicle? Thanks, 73
FYI unless someone can tell me different, I have a 9800 and 7800 and I have discovered that I can not use the 9800 can software on the 7800, so now i am using Chirp for the 7800 and import the saved file for the 9800. Is there an easer way ?
I bought mine for exactly the same reason, I have a 8 watt baufang and can't make it to the repeaters in south west Arizona, so this radio is the answer. KN6GZP
Ok,so getting it to repeat isn't a problem use the left side to receive on uhf 440 band transmit on your handheld on that, set your left side on two meter, which is the repeater near me it is networked and I can get clear back to California on that, now my problem is the quad band antenna I have, I can use two meter and 70 cm no problem but 10 and 6 meters are off the scale, according to the setup instructions you adjust the bace of the antenna for two meter, and 6 meter, then adjust the little stub on top to bring in your 10 meter, well it's voodoo, I got good ground , 13feet of RG-8x it's a work in progress, any suggestions? Thanks for the good videos.
Hi there i just wondering about connecting this unite to the car. there are two way connection,1 car accessory and 2 battery.what is your recommendation.
There's no SSB function, and as far as I'm aware this isn't capable of digital modes either. 2m is FM and I've been playing around with mine for awhile and I think the AM function for 6-10m is either "smoke n mirrors" or a flat lie? I've listened to 11m CB which is AM just fine so I dunno. Not sure about SSTV.

Program by hand. It doesn't take long
As a tech I would buy it if it has SSB capability. From what I read it is FM only. We cannot use FM on ten meters.
There are FM segments on the upper part of 10m. There are both FM simplex and FM repeater channels. Have a look at a bandplan of 10m.
