I have set up many of these. Some have been put in volunteer fire brigade vehicles. A few were put into ambulance service vehicles. One was a rural constable station backup transceiver station. Of course, many were for amateur radio operators. They are extremely versatile transceivers that have found their way to many services. As long as I am continued to be paid to set up the stations, and configure the radios, I will continue to do it. They have become a favourite of rural area services, and of course, radio amateurs.

@@pyrmontweb Perhaps, in your region, that may be true. There is no issue with the CRCT in setting up these radios as the secondary radio stations for rural first responder dispatch services, and primary radios for commercial use for both rural and urban areas. They only need to have a few things tested at installation and to follow antenna restriction according to location. For volunteer services, there are no restrictions as long as band coordinations are met and local antenna restrictions met. They may even be installed as repeater configurations for volunteer services. They can not be used by aircraft, nor for commercial watercraft at all. As previously mentioned, this is in reference to where I reside. Your local and national laws may vary.

I'm a old guy and getting sick of watching TV all day with my cat. I.m kind of house bound.. How do you get to frequency range in Chirp? I saw you had to enter a password. For the local CB frequencies, select 5Khz. Push the knob to enter it. Now push the center menu key. You will not have 5 kilohertz steps. Unfortunately, there is no 1 kilohertz steps programmed for the TYT TH-9800 varients. Mainly HF transceivers have that. An HF transciever is a transciever that receives and transmit between 30Khz to 29.999Mhz. At 30Mhz to infinity, the 1 kilohertz steps for radios are not common to find.

I guess it's possible maybe with reprogramming the radio firmware. I know they made some models with 144/220/450. I have not experimented with expanding the range beyond what was documented. Problem would be since the radio was not intended to transmit there there would be no TX filtering and minimal RF output.

Please give attention to your coaxial cable. A bad coaxial cable will cripple a station worse than a bad radio or a bad antenna. It is a very affordable investment that yields volumes for your station. If it is a new cable, change the ends. There could be a manufacturing error in one of the ends. Even if the coaxial cable tests good with an ohm meter, it could still be questionable. As the cable moves, the ends will move as well. Give it a try. You may find the answer to be very simple. Also, what is the standing wave ratio reading at the radio?

I gave up trying to get the TYT software to work on Linux after all the head scratching and dozens of tabs I needed open to walk me through getting CHIRP Next up and running. I used a windows machine for the unlock and then back to the fresh CHIRP install for the actual programming. I have a buddy with an AM CB 8 miles away and we can talk on our AM rigs clear as a cell phone. I tried him on this and he could hear me, clear but a little quiet. I couldn't hear him at all however. It can be used to transmit on FM CB. But it will not transmit on SSB, nor AM. It can, however, listen to AM. Have your friend switch to FM and you will hear each other clearly. This is, of course, if he has a multimode CB radio.

Using a 259 centimeter antenna on the roof of my house, with a homemade ground plane, I can achieve about 40 kilometers with the 5 watt FM legal limit. However, if the power selector button is pushed, "accidentally," I can go much further. AM, USB, LSB, and CW go tremendously further many times, even with the 5 watt legal limit on AM and 12 watt legal limit on USB, LSB, CW. FM is just much clearer.

There is no 10 FM activity to speak of. 6 meter FM, maybe.

What about using an external duplexer with two different antennas. I have set some up with triplexers with three different antennas. The coaxial switch is a very poor idea. They are a favourite for rural services radio stations. The 50 watt maximum is all that is needed in rural areas.

Do not worry about using a transceiver with an illegal mode or illegal power. If you speed in your automobile, worry about stopping that first. That can kill you, and others. Using FM on 11 meters will never kill you. Using more power, unless it is a horrible amount, will not kill you either. After you stop speeding in your automobile, then worry about legal radio modes. However, I will never transmit on a frequency I have no license to use. That is the same as trespassing. The 11 meter transceiver in my vehicle transmits 20 watts. So what! It probably gets about 1 kilometre further than the 4 watts.

I have set some up for volunteer fire brigades, rural ambulance services, backup transceivers for constable stations, PEG radio stations, and, of course, amateur radio operators. Please remember, your nation's communications ministry may not allow wattage above 5 watts where you reside. However, they may not allow you to speed in your automobile as well. Public utilities, ambulance service, bus services, rural constables, fire departments, tow truck services, taxi, security companies, trucking companies, and much more, are now all at your fingertips. What you can hear, you can talk to except the frequencies above 510Mhz. If you do not exercise self control, you will lose more than your radio. You may feel like saying, "Drop that poodle you disgusting police pig. It is not evidence and it will not cure the loneliness you feel for the love of a woman!" But, you must fight that temptation. Stay on CB, 49Mhz, MURS (if your nation has it), FRS, PMR446, LPR433, or get an amateur radio license or PEG radio license. If your nation requires a license for GMRS get a licnense fr that. GMRS and PEG radio require no exams. The rest of the services mentioned require no license, except amateur radio. But amateur radio linceses are easy t get. Any interest in it will almost guarantee a lincesne. If you are a human doorstop, you will not get the lincesne. But you still have CB, 49MHZ, MURS,FRS, GMRS, PEG.

@@cloudstrife5209 Please remember to backup your already recorded channels before you do the frequency expansion. I made a rather ugly mistake with someone else's radio. Good thing the owner had all the frequencies printed out. I am sure he did not like manually entering all the frequencies. But, he got a great discount on my installation services.

Sorry your having trouble with this radio. If you have the proper CTCSS tone and set the input and output frequencies properly , I don't see why you would have any trouble. One thing to check is the FM mode setting if it is on Wide or Narrow. I hope this helps.

@@warzone7571 As long as it is with the frequency range you want to test. It wouldn't be a bad idea to put the watt meter model your looking at into UA-cam and see if someone has done a review of it.
