  • This week we're stepping our mast after a month-long journey in the French Canals on our sailboat. It's time to put the mast upright and get Ruby Rose sailing again! But this isn't without its challenges, as we discover when it comes time to lift the mast off the deck.
    Hope you enjoy this episode!
    Cheers,
    Nick & Terysa

Love the shot at 25:47. You are right about the canal memory. Even decades later it remains one of the most unique and beautiful trips of many. Your shots brought back the tranquility of the canal with the trees bordering and nothing but countryside to enjoy as you glide past. But my advice to the lone fisherman one day is still, "Bonjour! Don't eat the fish!"

Nice guys, probably should of had a quick chat to a rigger as it might have saved you some time and sweat!!
Eg, have the mast on it's back so you lift from the front, and have a line from the bottom of the mast to help control when you can't reach the mast or to pass it to the boat!!
Oh and don't try and open split pins to the tension is on the rig!!!

Ruby Rose is back in action !!! Nick/Terysa, when I worked at a boatyard we had to unstep/step masts with a hand crank crane with a triple luff block&tackle!! (oh lots of fun) Glad to see you guys in open water again! Fair winds and following seas Ruby Rose !

So glad to see that you got it up Nick (the mast - what else??) though it did look a tad scary. I've loved these canal videos, but it's cool to see you back on the ocean. I'm really looking forward to the La Rochelle video. Very happy memories for me from the summers of 1971 and 1972 when I spent time with my French pen friend and his family in the area at a holiday site in the village of Vandre. We had the best seafood dinner I have ever experienced in the small town of Surgeres. Then there was boating on the Venise Verte. Yes, it's one of my favourite locations in France too!

17:00 I'm also excited to be seeing La Rochelle. I grew up in New Rochelle, NY which is a sister city of La Rochelle.
La Rochelle was one of the last two cities held by the Protestant Huguenots in 1629 after the Revocation of the
Edict of Nantes which was passed in 1593 by King Henry the IV. The Edict allowed Protestants to live in France.
By 1685 the Edict was revoked by King Louis XIV and it was no longer cool to live in France and not be Catholic.
French Huguenot Protestants scattered around the globe and a group of them settled in a place North of NYC in 1688
and decided to call it New Rochelle. And now you know...the rest ...of the story.

Love La Rochelle. Been there a number of times during motorbiking tours and also caravaning. Never sailing though. The campsite is, as the French do well, almost on the side of the harbour and the harbour ferry provides a service back an forth (unless you forget the time due to having too many pints and miss the last one back in the evening, like we did once. Then you have to walk around the harbour. But even then, it's not far).

One of the most clever designs I've used is the Farrier Trimaran mast step system. No crane needed...mind, a much shorter mast- nerve wracking all the same. I love the technical videos like these. Well done again...makes me long for the sailing season to return to the Great Lakes in May!

    @nigellucas560 4 роки тому +1

Rainbow warrior was a nice finish to the vid, didn’t the French navy sink the original in NZ - time moves on, great to see that people applauded.
It must have been something getting your mast back up after jousting it through the canals. I recall my half tonner and latterly my two sons tonner mounting the mast each new season. I think there is a medical trauma that covers this process. Measuring the bottle screw length helps before you demolish the mast. Maybe not as the mast might have grown.
Glad your sailboat is back on the tidal water and what a lovely place to be in. There are so many sailing books on that region, but you will have all of those I expect.

You guys did good. Although, that's a deck-stepped mast.....which hardly counts as "stepping a mast". It does get a little tricky with the larger sloops with keel-stepped mast (mainly due to the extreme weight of a huge mast, and the obvious issues of alignment with keel-stepping).

I love La Rochelle also. We spent 10 years of our holidays there and nearby on Ile de Re and Ice de Ron. I can't wait to see it again on your Vlog.

: Nick you are such a conscientious person. You're so careful and precise when you do repairs or boat work or I would say probably anything. So happy for you that all went well. I'm sure it was a lot of work getting the Mast and rigging all set. One thing for sure you have a great partner, she has a lovely smile. Wishing you safe sailing always.⛵

We had a Macgregor 26x that had a mast that folded up and down in about 20 minutes. Of course ours stopped at the cabin top, and I think yours goes clear into the bilge? Take a breath and relax.
