    I just ordered one, not knowing much about guitars. I feel reassured that someone that owns a €4000 guitar likes playing one of these!
    It's my first electric 🎸. I tried a cheap accoustic as a teenager...got nowhere..started messing with ukuleles about 3 years ago.. discovered I can play those a bit..( thanks UA-cam!).
    Hesitated for ages because of a neuromuscular problem - figured it wasn't worth buying a guitar if my hands are gonna stop working completely. The medical problems seems stabilised or improving now so I finally jumped in and ordered!

    I'm glad I stumbled across your vid Graeme. I have been kicking tires on getting a H-B Tele and that is a great endorsement 9-10 months later.
    In a recent Guitar Player magazine here in the U.S. they did a compare gear article on different manufacturers of the T-style and the Harley-Benton is not mentioned. Neither is the SX. The Xaviere is reviewed as the lowest priced of the 15 reviewed. The next lowest is the Fender Squier.
    The rest are in the $2-3,000 dollar range, with one mentioned at 10k-plus.
    WHAT?!
    These people are missing the train. A quick perusal of YT videos should tell 'em, we're looking for quality, realistic pricing, and don't give a hoot about trademark brand.
    I'm sorry, she who must be obeyed, would beat me senseless with a $10,000 guitar and very few people are buying $2-3000 guitars.

      Dave Pugh . Harly Benton is taking it back to the beginning. The Telecaster was designed to be a mass produced and affordable, dare I say cheap, but perfectly functional instrument for the working musician.

    Thought you were playing through a Blues Jr or similar. The Studio Pro is a great amp. Bit of a sleeper . My old Bandit has fooled loads of people at gigs. i get asked where I got my old Peavey tube amp, only to get a bit of a look when I say it's an old Bandit. Cool tones and and a good playing on your part sir . Those HB T-style guitars are getting lots of really good reviews. Solid gig axe .

    I ordered a TE-52na several months ago , and I am happy as a pig in a pool full of shit! The ash body is extremely dense and heavy, imparting a definite punchy, Tele sound. The Canadian maple neck, the finish, and frets feel great making playing effortless and satisfying. This HB is as versatile as any Tele, with adequate tone settings for many different styles of music. I will upgrade the nut to bone, replace the string trees, tuners, bridge, wiring, switches, and pickups on this axe. I would also add shielding in the pickup holes and have the frets edged, leveled, and crowned. You can also try to improve the sustain by loosening the two bottom screws on the bolt on neck and resetting the screws to possibly pull the neck closer into the body of the guitar. You can even flip the volume and tone controls upside down so the pickup selector switch is positioned to the rear and the volume control is in the front, making access to the volume much easier to reach with your fingers!

    I'm getting one and will put 2 Iron Gear Alchemist 90's on it [plus a 6 saddle bridge and black pickguard for humbucker - all from thomann; innexpensive stuff], keep the pups that come with the Te52 and stick them on a TE30 that I'll buy later on for shennanigans [but I'll mod them so I can have a out of phase/In phase variation]. Good stuff

  • @jameshogan9529
    @jameshogan9529 3 роки тому +2

    Hi Graeme, I've just brought one of these and after changing the bridge and tuners to Wilkinsons it's a real keeper. Did you take the lacquer off the body and neck etc? Just wondering what mods you did in total

  • @123ubuntu666
    @123ubuntu666 6 років тому +2

    I'm hoping to get lucky when I get one of these. I'm going to sand down the neck and probably the body too - bit too shiney for me. I'm sure the pups will be ok, if not, I'll swap them out.
    I'll probably put on a new bridge with the six saddle setup (I already have the 3-barrel bridges on my other teles). I'm buying this guitar to mod. My other Teles have very thin necks and I heard this one is a bit more 'clubby'.
    I'll probably put on some new tuners as well.
    I'm not bothered about modding most of my cheap guitars as I like them as they are, but this is a guitar that could be really taken to the next level with not too much effort. I need one Telecaster with a Maple board anyway.
    It's a toss up between getting this next for me or the short scale Tele that Revelation do (I'm a big Revelation fan, owning a couple of their guitars already). Alan Entwistle (Revelation guitars) and Trevor Wilkinson (who had a hand in designing this Tele if I'm not mistaken) are old friends from way back. In fact, I'm going to put in a set of Entwistle's Tele pups that only cost about 30 quid or so as part of the mod. Basically, I'm going to swap every single thing out on this beauty, just keeping the body and the neck intact.
    Nice review. Subbed.

    I have a TE30 i bought for my Christmas Present so almost 3 months on I want to change the pickups now sound isn't what im looking for I want pure telecaster so i'll do a little modding but for $125 usd this isn't really a complaint for that kind of money you have to expect a few mods. but when done (if your savvy) you will have a great guitar for way less then most Squires. ok so changes...a bone nut pickups and vintage tuning machines for the vibe

    • @GraemeCampbellMusic
      @GraemeCampbellMusic  6 років тому

      Hi John, these are the older Wilkinson pickups, the new guitars have Roswell (which apparently are just as good). Its been a while since I had a MIM standard but from what I recall soundwise, these pickups easily match them for tone. Of course that depends on your amp too. The only thing you might need to replace eventually is the cheap pots and switch but thats not urgent.

    Hey Graeme great video thanks for taking the time. I've just received the TE-70 from HB and for the money it's great. The pickups do sound a bit weak but I might play around with height adjustment. Did yours come with Wilkinson pups or the new Roswell's? I also have a high 13th fret which doesn't seem seated properly, so I've higher action atm than I'd prefer.

    Older vid, but I got a new one from Thomann on 3 Nov 2020. See here for my review: www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/190947/ngd-harley-benton-te-52-na-vintage-series-now-here-with-pics-phenomenal/p2
    In a nutshell, I've been playing/gigging nearly 50 years now, and have some pretty decent guitars inc a 1990 LP Custom, 2006 SG Standard, 2002 PRS Cu24, 3 US Strats (inc an original 1969), a 1988 US Tele, Patrick Eggle Berlin Pro, Epi Sheraton (1988, Sammick) and a few others. So when I say this guitar blew me away it's not an understatement. And I haven't even yet restrung it with decent strings! I've set the action low - neck is just superb, and over next week or so I'm going to polish the frets, fit new tuners (matching vintage deluxe Wilkinson 15:1 set that are a straight drop in - originals stay in tune well but gearing is a bit cheap and has play), and whilst the intonation is very good, I'm putting on Wilkinson brass compensated saddles. The guitar cost £139, the tuners £22.30 from Amazon and a kind friend has sent me the brass saddles. Pickups are outstanding. Haven't been able to put this down since I got it. I've played £1500-2000 Fender Teles that are not this good!

      is it the 14“ fretboard radius combined with the thicker neck feel that makes it awesome?

      @@uhMaxx Dunno, it's a heavy beast at around 9.5lbs - which is Les Paul territory, but it just has a great tone and is very comfortable to play. The Wilkinson tuners look the same as the stock tuners but are way better quality, and the brass compensated bridge works very well too. Had a bit of a problem with a squealing bridge pickup and Thomann's (bless 'em) sent me not one but two replacements. However, I discovered via one of the techs on 'The Fretboard' that it was the base-plate causing vibration and squealing. All it needed was a tiny bit of blu-tac under the plate and it sorted it, so I didn't need to change pickups! The novelty hasn't worn off and it's still the 'daily' guitar on my guitar stand that I reach for. I also fixed in place the string ferules at the back of the guitar that were too loose. Not only is it a great guitar to play, but I've learned how to do a lot of things I never did before including routing (the Wilkinsons were very slightly bigger posts than the stock tuners), polishing frets, changing bridge saddles, & fixing the base plate.

    I just got mine today, please note, i am only a learner Guitar player, out of the Box the Strings were Brown with Rust, i went and got new Strings, and it cost me a fortune went through packs of strings, there is no hole in the Machine head tuners lol, how the Fuck, are you supposed to re string this Bastard thing, with no hole in the Tuners, only a tiny Slot on the top...i gave up, kept busting strings, the Guitar was dirty with Prints, i had to polish them out, thats me, and i only got it, will find more faults later, again note am only a learner...i need to find a person that can fit proper Tuners with holes in them for me, instead of this Garbage.. and that will be a problem, as i live on the remote outer Hebrides Islands...

    it's out of tune because you are to lazy to tune it or it just doesnt stay in tune in general?

    I am sorry, this aint a great guitar and it isn't even a great buy.
    Besides the flaws that are common in this price range (crap tuners, uneven frets, poor pickups) this thing may look like a 7.... Tele but it just does not sound that way.
    You may replace anything (nut, bridge, PUs ) but it still won't come close. This thing is sounding mediocre after all.
    People should know that.

    I guess everybody who admires the subpar pricetag would love to work his butt off in some chineese sweatshop. This is a secret of low prices - ever.
