Half the males in this are just WIDE, and not in a good way, and a bunch of them DO have overcomplicated power rangers armor. Or Loki, that is such a great encapsulation of the character's personality without being overly noisy, just an 8? Storm looks kind of cool but doesn't really have anything going for her, it's just a generic "cool" suit, 10; Black Panther, which respects the simplicity of the OG suit while adding just a tiny bit of details to make it look cooler, is somehow worse (actually, what's even the difference between Black Panther and Hela in that regard?). Mantis is a bit generic, but certainly not to the point of getting a 6. Moon Knight is _extremely_ overdesigned for a MK design, yet it gets a 9. Your take on the male character designs... Max has such weird taste. Psylocke default outfit - “WHOAHHH DUDE LASER BUTTERFLY SCARF THEY’RE REALLY PANDERING TO ME HERE” Psylocke default outfit - “uhhh basic ninja leotard but the neck is slightly altered? Eughhh, it’s so over complicated, they’re doing way too much here.” Like what lol
I kind of understand what he means. The scarf is pretty simple and nice to look at, while the neck holes are unnecessary and are just there to make it look like a butterfly. Although, I think the alt skin does look better than the default.
I feel like Max didn’t really consider why some designs aspects are there and what they represent. For exemple Magneto’s armor being roughed up and having lines in the metal going everywhere is probably because his armor was probably made of metal from a random building he decimated and he doesn’t care about looking clean or what others think of him as long as he can achieve his goals.
This one, u're absolutely right, sometimes i think lore benefits the design more, and I hope he sees that. But sometimes max's opinion is from him not knowing most of the stuff, even he acknowledge the venom space skin lore but still didnt like it.
@@soppe2931 Agreed. I think sometimes you need to appreciate a costume BECAUSE it's meant to be a very different one-off, like Cap's barbarian costume. Literally no one is saying 'that's cap,' so saying it's a bad cap costume cause it's not cap is kind of missing the point. That said, as much as I prefer Agent Venom for the most part, I did always feel the space knight venom was a mistake. It was bringing flash's venom too close to eddie's venom visually while still not being Eddie's venom. Kind of worst of all worlds. I personally think it hastened the end of Flash's tenure as venom, for which I'll always downgrade it a bit.
Different mentality/opinion: If you have to give me a paragraph as to why something is there, that may or may not look good with the rest of the design, then it shouldn't be there. I don't care about why something is there or what it represents if it takes away from the overall appeal of the look.
@@lepplayer93 Also agree, while lore benefits the design, firs impression what makes people hooked to the character more, but from max perspective (MVC3 and etc MVC) he does critique a lot to a point that he just doesnt like it, rather recognize anything unique, many people like Thor's bulky look and his outfit but somehow Max disagreed, my point is most Max opinion cater towards specific design of his mind, so us as a viewer seems to be weird when he says something bad about ironman or spiderman.
Something having lore reasons doesn't change it looking bad. I can put Spider-Man in a bright orange and lime green football uniform and write lore reasons for that but you're still gonna say it sucks XD
from this video, what i got from Max's taste is mostly rule of cool with a big like on ninja/samurai, while complete distaste for anything medievial with or without fantasy looking
Max I feel the need to point out the psylocke alt skin's hair cut is a traditional Japanese cut that's still pretty popular today called the "hime cut" in the west. You're free to not like it but I give the team props for that little extra dash of cultural infusion.
Max is such an old man now. "more than 2 colors? overcomplicated. A jean and a red shirt? overcomplicated. A butterfly in the classic psylocke outfit? overcomplicated. Hulk looks like every Hulk ever? Dont like it. Psylocke new outfit that is cool but really complicated? AWESOME IT LOOKS LIKE THE CHARACTERS I LIKED 30 YEARS AGO. The same old man vibes when he complained about Radahn having too much hair.
Nah he has a point about Psylocke's alt skin. The semi-random holes all over is just overly messy, like she's worn her skintight outfit too much and doesn't have another one. If it was just the butterfly I wouldn't mind it, but the sleeves are weird (one has a hole for the armpit, the other is missing and at an angle), there's other holes placed haphazardly... I wish they had just made it a solid piece and made designs on the material to accentuate the butterfly holes.
The reason the visual style and complexity varies greatly is bc some of the characters are explicitly from the future, Black Widow and Cap being the two main examples. You can think of some of them as 2099 versions of the characters
"Yea... I just think this Iron Fist design crosses over to much into the Shang-Chi territory"... ... ... ... Boy, do I have bad news for you about the actual canon lore of Iron Fist...
@Subpar1O1 yes, Lie Lin was introduced as Sword Master and then his sword broke and it's shards got stuck on his arms and he became the new Iron Fist after Danny lost his powers
Magik’s punk goth design literally cemented her as one of Marvel’s top mutants, popularity-wise. It was already perfect, and Marvel Rivals made it even better. I also find it funny that Marvel tried to distance her from that design back in 2022, like they literally made an entire storyline just to change her outfit only to revert back recently to her punk goth outfit because of how timeless and iconic it is for her character.
I'm sorry to fans, because I know some of her oldest fans like that plot for having her finally come to terms with her past, but that's just not how these characters work. When a character runs on being edgy, you don't get to get rid of the edge.
Max’s view of “This doesn’t feel like the character” raises a discussion because where ARE we judging it from? Max has very specific tastes and opinions of the different Venom designs, but he has less to go for characters he’s unfamiliar. Particularly I liked that run of Cap when he got lost in the Savage Lands with a kid sidekick and I feel that’s what his He-Man costume is referencing. Sure it doesn’t FEEL like Cap based on who Cap is 99% of the time but in fighting games we’d normally mark out on weird and niche costume references like Phoenix Wright’s college outfit or Cyber Akuma: outfits that feel out of left field but are deep cuts.
I think Captain America's a good example with this one, because of exactly what he said: if they just had a Regular Captain America outfit it'd be fine, because the rest all feel like alts on an original that's not actually there; they'd be fun different takes, but without the original being there they lose something. Which I kind of understand, I like that this is a multiversal story that they're really leaning into that with, but sometimes you want to pick Iron Man without there being an asterisk next to it. And hell, some of those weird takes aren't weird enough: if 2099 Captain America is just 'regular Cap but with a laser shield', why are we even here?
19:25 “He’s not loyal to any flag, country, or set of ideals. He doesn’t flinch as torture, human trafficking, or genocide. He trades blood for money. He’s your new best friend.”
@@MechaMan2012 i mean these character designs arent just for expert character designers to look at, the whole point is to appeal to consumers because if they dont like it then there goes 99% of your player base. i like most of the designs but saying "you need to be an EXPERT on character designing to understand why theyre good" would mean that they did a shitty job with the designs
Can't say I agree with all of Max's takes on the costumes. Especially when he says that certain costumes don't "look/feel like the character" when they're not supposed to be. Like Gladiator Cap ISN'T regular cap, its him from another universe, so it wouldn't look like him.
Right but in a video game especially a competitive one you should be able to see what character you’re fighting from across the map and I feel like w some of the skins in this game you really can’t tell
@@Paulmacellaro Yeah Im sure most gamers mistake a dude running around with a big ass shield, which he's throwing in your face, for Venom or Spider-Man. If you lack the ability to differentiate characters because they are wearing skins, you should not play it competitively in the first place.
@@Paulmacellaro This is not a good argument, most hero shooter have specific movement, abilities, these makes up for who they are, not skin. Yeah that's kind of why these are fun. Max sometimes comes at his takes from a unique angle. I'd love to see what a full roster design overseen by him would be like, for the sake of curiosity.

Max, another thing about almost every costume: They are references to other works that Marvel has done, under each paragraph tells you when each costume was first seen and where
I don't think Max touches upon this but it looks like these alt skins are based off of designs from the comics. Under the flavor text for each skin you can find a "First Appears in..." that tells you where the skin originates from. Weird they didn't do that for some of the base designs, especially when some are clearly inspired by certain book's runs.

It's not a huge deal but you're definitely biased towards MvC. The closer it looks to that the better. For example, I don't see what the problem with the gladiator Captain America skin. Hell yeah that's Cap. And you can't really say a costume doesn't "feel" like a character if it's literally from a comic book.
I looove the gladiator Cap personally even though I am not familiar with the comic of origin but I think that just comes with more familiarity with Marvel. I really want to try this game it just depends on a few factors where I am getting it, either my laptop or my playstation. I don't have ps+ so it all depends on if the game is playable without it or if my laptop can run the game.
Everyone's biased towards a certain style and look of these characters. To him, MvC nailed it the best. To other people it was an animated series, or a particular comic run, or a game from the 2000s, or a movie. And comics can get things wrong, it doesn't matter if something is from a comic. There've been X-Men comics that came out where I felt the redesign didn't feel like the character, you can't tell me you've thought every single design of every character in every comic felt perfectly suited to them, because that's insane.
I think he meant for overcomplicated design, is your eyes don't have immediate rest point due to busy elements of the costume. Meanwhile moonknight,s is overall white and your eyes can rest properly on any part of the costume.
@ his mask and chest are the only good parts, the rest of the suit is all completely unnecessary. i think the only thing that carries that fit is the mask. without it people would prolly think its ass
complicated costumes get worse when you think about the fact that it's supposed to be clothing and combat suit. take magneto for example, pretty simple overall, just some slightly busy lines that don't need to be there and the whole crowning of his helmet feels extra but not horrible. then you notice a lil dangling like key chain on his right chest, what is that? why is that there? what purpose does it serve? it doesn't add anything to the look, it's probably annoying to hear when he walks or flys. it's unnecessarily complicated for the sake of being complex
There's a very fine line between complicated and overdesigned. Captain America's default suit is (in my opinion) overdesigned and very busy, but I love his Galactic Talon suit.
theres is such a thing as visual noise. its always gonna be subjective but to me for example, i agree it really can ruin potentially good designs. its also gets to a point where you add so much shit it loses the iconography of the character itself.
A more powerful design is one where your eye doesn't have to focus on too many things at once. For a simple example, look at Superman or Batman. The logo on their chest is the thing that draws towards your eye, and for Batman it's then the eyes. The rest of the costume is a clean blend of two colors. Guilty Gear Strive is a good philosophy of strong character design in my opinion if you wanna take inspiration. Especially when you compare it to older games.
Over complicated means something is added for complexity in meaningless ways in both utility and aesthetics, and actually become a detriment to the overall style.
"That coat is sentient and you need to control it." "I think I would think the design is cool if it wasn't strange." Buddy. Pal. Friend. IT'S DOCTOR STRANGE. THOSE STATEMENTS ARE CORRECT, THAT IS THE POINT.
Watched this live. I fear Max’s nostalgia got the better of him here. Like I don’t understand why the Psylocke skin needed to be a 1 to 1 to traditional Psylocke but the default skin was praised due to it resembling two of his fav capcom characters He would constantly state how cool a character looked but then in the same breath say he didn’t like the design. He generalizing a bunch of them as WoW like because (Magik) and kept defaulting to 6/10s because he didn’t love one or two elements of a design.
I also felt like he didn't fully understand the entire point of alternate skins in games like this. He's like "this alternate costume doesn't feel like the original character." Like...yeah? That's the point sometimes? I don't think people would be happy if every single skin was similar to the base skin design with minor changes. Like he praised psylocke's default, which is an entirely different version of the character just because it resembled capcom characters he liked, but he shit on other cool skins that were NOT the defaults because they "didn't look like the original character design"
Its just his opinion and score dude, it makes sense to him; Those small details he didn't like? Thats a -2 each for him What do you not understand? It is just his personal taste, whether anybody considers it a good take or not.
Mohawk Storm was the Storm I grew up with via backissues. Always the best. But this takes it up a notch by working music appreciation into the punk look’s animation. Always felt like that part of her wild side didn’t get enough attention. Love it.

@@lunadead ^This. And to add to that, her classic costume is still in the game, so even if you don't like the Momoko redesign, you can just roll with that one.
I feel like so many costume designs for Spider-Man try and “reinvent the wheel”, so to speak. All that usually happens is that it looks complicated and over-designed because Spidey’s costume already has a lot going on, so adding a lot more to try and stand out just falls flat imo.
That isn't true at all. He loves a lot of things that are esoteric, including a lot of things you haven't heard of. This is just judging from personal perspective like we all do.
For those who dont watch Max's streams, he's already played some games of Marvel rivals but lost interest in it quite fast. The hero shooter genre just isn't for him. Stuff like the cooldowns is something he didn't like. I cant remember what other critiques he had.
Another one is about how the dynamic visuals didn't translate into gameplay which is comparatively muted. It's just the reality of 3rd person shooter in pvp games
He goes about it more in-depth during stream, but games like this just makes him wish it was a fighting game instead. Because the dynamic presentation is moreso integrated into the actual gameplay in that genre. He values seeing his characters able to do cool stuff within the player's control.
It’s funny cause spidey actually looked way worse before launch cause his back logo was also black it made him look way too blue when looking at him from behind. Despite it not being my favourite spider man design, I appreciate the fact that they fixed it a bit before releasing the game :)

Psylocke default outfit - “uhhh basic ninja leotard but the neck is slightly altered? Eughhh, it’s so over complicated, they’re doing way too much here.”

I kind of understand what he means. The scarf is pretty simple and nice to look at, while the neck holes are unnecessary and are just there to make it look like a butterfly. Although, I think the alt skin does look better than the default.

Almost to the point that it felt like he was looking for reasons to give things lower scores.
@@vinniegret4841you absolutely can if their inconsistent

@alexdoorn234 Every free game is playable without ps plus 👌
Everyone's biased towards a certain style and look of these characters. To him, MvC nailed it the best. To other people it was an animated series, or a particular comic run, or a game from the 2000s, or a movie. And comics can get things wrong, it doesn't matter if something is from a comic. There've been X-Men comics that came out where I felt the redesign didn't feel like the character, you can't tell me you've thought every single design of every character in every comic felt perfectly suited to them, because that's insane.
Almost none of the costumes you claim are "over-complicated", actually are.
And glazes actual over complicated skins like moon knight 😂
You must have zero idea what that word means, then
u cant yap about everyones skins being "over complicated" then give moonknight a 9 lmao. bro has the most complicated skin in the game
No he doesn't lol
I mean, it's just white body armor. It's not that complicated.
@ i could say that about like 70% of the characters he said was complicated lol
I'd argue a skin becoming "complicated" doesn't mean it gets worse, imo
complicated costumes get worse when you think about the fact that it's supposed to be clothing and combat suit. take magneto for example, pretty simple overall, just some slightly busy lines that don't need to be there and the whole crowning of his helmet feels extra but not horrible. then you notice a lil dangling like key chain on his right chest, what is that? why is that there? what purpose does it serve? it doesn't add anything to the look, it's probably annoying to hear when he walks or flys. it's unnecessarily complicated for the sake of being complex

Tbh, I find MR Spiderman less complicated than MCU Spiderman that adds more unnecessary small details onto his suit.
Max just dislikes anything that's even remotely esoteric
That isn't true at all. He loves a lot of things that are esoteric, including a lot of things you haven't heard of. This is just judging from personal perspective like we all do.
Marvel characters looking the most creative/fresh they have in over a decade…
Max: Ehhh 6/10
*Looks at comic accurate skins*
Max: "garbage!"
26:54 “the cape has grown sentience”
Well Max, let me hold your hand when I tell you this…
bro is impossible to please
Sure let's ignore the many times he gave costumes a 9 or 10 in this video because we wanna pretend it was all negative
That was like 6 character out of the 33 or 32 that are in game@@TamsinV
He values seeing his characters able to do cool stuff within the player's control.
he wanted to spam moves? lol
@@lordpookieI mean yeah have you seen which fighting games he likes best?
Could you imagine how hellish this game would be without cooldowns lol.
The pitchforks and torches were ready max, Jeff the goodest boy was the only correct answer.
Untrue, he rated Storm a 10/10 as she SHOULD be.
It’s funny cause spidey actually looked way worse before launch cause his back logo was also black it made him look way too blue when looking at him from behind. Despite it not being my favourite spider man design, I appreciate the fact that they fixed it a bit before releasing the game :)
Props to the editor for impecible humor @ 39:26.
Max: "Adam Warlock would have been rated higher if he didn't have such stupid hair"
Immediately zooms in on Max, who has nearly identical shaped hair.
everything is over-complicated if it’s more than a spandex suit ig
@4:07 skipped Anti-Venom??
the characters turning their head towards you when you rotate the models blew my BALLS off when i noticed it bro the presentation for this game needs to be studied
I love all the designs in this game. They are very unique and stylized. It's nice seeing all these heros in a new way.
Attacking Adam warlock for his hair when he has the same hair is so funny 😭😭
Max did not cook this video
