For games entirely designed to be a crossover (Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter x Tekken, etc...), the character must be from outside those franchises to count as a guest. 3. Characters that are already owned by the developer/publisher in most cases were not rated (Nintendo characters in Smash, SNK characters in King of Fighters, Rare characters in KI 2013, Mortal Kombat characters in Injustice, Mega Man / Pac-Man in Street Fighter x Tekken, FF7 characters in Ergheiz, Daytona Car in Fighters Megamix, and so on). 4. Brawlhalla was explicitly skipped because that game has enough guests to fill an entire video of its own. 5. This list was not exhaustive but Max tried to cover as many as he could.
This was great. Max was like: "Gonna talk about MK, Tekken, maybe some Smash" and chat was like: "Norimaro MSHvSF, Gon in T3, Earthworm Jim in ClayFightre, Fred Durst in WWE, Michael Jackso, Bill and Hillary Clinton in Ready 2 Rumble".
I think he mentions to be considered real guests they can't be from the same company. So the Daytona car being being in a Sega game would not be surprising.
Bro. I wanted to get SoulCalibur II solely due to the fact that Link was on the cover. I instantly became a SoulCalibur fan after playing it and bought every main line game since.
Banjo can 100% be graded because he got bought away from Nintendo. His entire series went up in smoke because Microsoft owned Rare and after Nuts and Bolts didn't want anything to do with the franchise. It honestly seemed like he was a dead character. So him getting pulled back by Nintendo as a guest character (still Microsoft owned) was just fucking amazing 11/10
Yeah I'm surprised Max called it a "Nintendo character" when it isn't. It's a Rare character first and foremost, and with the whole history of the buyout and the console wars in-between, it deserves a 11/10. And considering it came before Steve, it pretty much opened the doors for more Microsoft characters so Steve wasn't 100% off the table after Banjo. If we had gotten Master Chief at some point it would've blown everything out of the water (Console mascot type like Cloud).
Lars in Naruto Storm 2 is very simple: Bamco asked Kishimoto to make a costume for him for Tekken 6 and since they also own the rights for Naruto games they made CyberConnect" (developer of the Naruto Storm games) add Lars as an extra guest characters. No Moba shit, no other stuff. Also as far as I know Lars isn't present in the PS4/5 remaster of the Naruto Storm trilogy. Sorta like how Dante is present in SMT 3 Nocturne, since there was a deal between Atlus and Capcom (the DMC3 devil trigger model was designed by Kazuma Kaneko (main chara designer of SMT/Persona) that's why Dante and Vergil in their devil forms looked very different.
In retrospect, Geese being added to Tekken contributed to SNK’s revival as a major gaming company and the butterfly effect has led to a golden age of Fighting Games to where now the possibilities are endless and fans get to reap the benefits of them.
A little bit of a clarification: Everyone expected Simon Belmont to show up in Smash, if for no other reason than the process of elimination: He was the only NES-era legend left to not show up. Max's rating for Simon makes sense. Now *Richter*? Nobody expected *both* of the boys to be there. The fact that the best Belmont showed up alongside the main man (to Bloody Tears no less) was hype as hell and deserves a full point more.
The day Max discovers DreamMix TV World Fighters will blow his mind in thousands of pieces. Its the platform fighter that has Bomberman, Master Higgins, Snake, TwinBee, Optimus Prime, Simon Belmont, Yugo Ogami, The Moai from Gradius and Tyson from fucking Beyblade in the same game, all in early 2000s.
I dunno if someone corrected Max in the full stream but Cloud *DID* appear on Nintendo consoles prior to Smash. He was in Final Fantasy Explorers on the 3DS, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded on the DS and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the GBA.
So the way Sakurai chose characters wasn't if that specific character showed up on a Nintendo console but if the franchise the character comes from once did. A large collection of final fantasy games have appeared on Nintendo consoles and FFVII is from the most popular of the franchise so Cloud was chosen represent the Final Fantasy brand as a whole.
@ArceusZer035 True, that's another factor, Final Fantasy VII isn't what you'd call a "Nintendo game" but the series overall had a strong presence in the NES, SNES and GBA, so having a FF rep in Smash makes sense.
Banjo is definitely a 10/10 because it was always thought to never happen with Microsoft owning Rare, but fans always held hope with their history with Nintendo. Even better that they connected the reveal trailer to Donkey Kong, which is technically where he made his debut.
Love how they recreated alien vs predator in MKX. Some of the best guest characters and we are lucky to have them in the game together, rather than one in X and one in 11
Alien vs Predator in MKX is, I think, the ultimate guest character match up. A close second is, of course, Cloud and Sephiroth meeting in Smash, and I'll also throw in Sora in there as a third wheel because of his bullying of Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts. No other guest character encounter has felt as perfect to me as Alien vs Predator.
10:45 As a fan of Dragon Quest it's a 10/10 for me not because the DQ11 hero was there, but that multiple heros from multiple games were represented with an extremely high amount of care and detail. For example, DQ8 is my favorite game of all time, and seeing the Dragovian sword and shield being used by him in game shows me that Sakurai absolutely played through each of those games prior to their final designs. FYI you can only get those in the post game which usually takes 100+ hours to get to. Also they put Munchie in Smash :D
Can't just glance over Banjo like that. They had been a highly requested pick from since the series started and were even considered for Melee. Their appearance was far more shocking than Cloud because they actually were from a rival company. In David Wise's words, they were "back home at last"
@@twotonesrebel875On the stream Max said that he’s not counting KI because the guest characters are all 1st party characters which he’s not wrong but at the same time they’re from different IP’s so I think there was still some merit to count them as well.
Piggybacking off this comment I thought we had some delusional takes of guest characters but I saw that in JP that people wanted Saber from FGO to get in Like huh????

It should be noted that Spawn wasn't the original guest character for the XBox version of SCII. They actually wanted either Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden or Kasumi from DOA, but since this was around the time Itagaki was still at Koei Tecmo and he did NOT like Namco at all, it never happened.
There was also that bizarre agreement with Todd McFarlane where he was allowed to make his own character because he agreed to make SC2 figures under his toy banner, so they already had Spawn on the backburner.
Did not know that... and I wonder if I wouldn't have preferred it that way, in some way. Spawn is neat and all, but Hayabusa would've felt more suitable, a video game character for a video game etc.
Also, according to her official body measurements, she apparently has the *HOTTEST* bod in the whole series. Seriously, her breasts are actually bigger than Honoka's. But, y'know, she's inside a suit of armor so we can't actually see them... those cheeky bastards...
The Lars Alexanderson crossover with Naruto Storm 2 is the perfect time to set up a Rate the Super. For those unaware, Tekken at the time actually did a bunch of collaboration costumes designed by mangaka, and Lars's costume was designed by Masashi Kishimoto. Since they're both published by Namco Bandai it became a crossover and they put him in Storm too.
You missed Samurai Showdown’s 4th guest - Hibiki Takane from The Last Blade! A really cool implementation of the character imo. The different routes her personality could take depending on how you play are rad as hell
She was mentioned by him on-stream. He doesn't consider her a "Guest" since she's still a SNK native character. Otherewise, there would be several other entries to this list. . .
I'm starting to become Convinced that 2B is rapidly becoming one of the most recognized game characters of all time due to her being a guest character in almost everything these days, from fighting games, to Gacha, and just about every other genre in between
Sonic in Brawl has to be a 10. No way can you put him on the same level as Megaman who was traditionally on Nintendo consoles from the beginning. Sonic was literally the mascot of Nintendo's original console rival. Talks of Sonic and Mario being in the same game were so huge in the internet back in the day. I honestly think that is the biggest crossover ever even if something like Snake was "less expected." Feels like Max is using modern day perspective to cloud his judgement. Yes, Smash now is loaded with 3rd party characters, but at the time it wasn't. It was literally just Snake. As someone who was checking the Brawl Dojo daily back in the day, I can tell you that nothing was bigger than Sonic.
I think we forgot that Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax also had a Valkyria Chronicles Guest character as well. SEGA gave that game not just Akira, but Selvaria as well.
@@VBrancoPT A SEGA Arcade stage was there too But we're talking about Playable Guest Characters here tho (Akira and Selvaria), not all its crossover content.
I remember fighting sephiroth in ff7 remake in the end and i was thinking about how awesome it would be if sephiroth was a dlc character. I was fucking floored when the trailer came out.
You forgot one, and I don't know if anyone remembers this hidden gem. A fighting game made by Square Enix called Million Arthur Arcana Blood. Cause that game added one the best character in that game as a guest character. Iori Yagami from KOF. I was literally mind blown knowing about this cause I never knew about that till now.
Yeah! That was a cross promotion with SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. Arcana Blood got Iori Yagami and SNK Heroines got Thief Arthur as a DLC. The game also has 2 guest character from other Square-Enix franchises, Riesz from Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana and Koume Sakiyama from Lord of Vermilion IV.
It's funny I think the PS2 version of SC2 is why I got attracted to Tekken especially with 8. I was like "Why is this weird semi bald dude laughing at me for losing?" As a kid I liked the energy even though my brother and stepbrother beat me each time. However when I got older I enjoyed the GameCube version so much more because of Link. It felt so wild that I could see Link clearly break a demon's arm. Ganondorf is about to get cooked by this boy. With Smash Ultimate funilly enough was there first time I played Kazuya and went "Holy shit his move list is tight and I can hit a perfect input?!" So I gravitate towards Mishimas in Tekken because of Smash.
I 100% got Soul Calibur II, an IP I had never touched before, just because Link was in it. And he was actually a lot of fun for me to play and easily my favorite in the game. I was the bane of my friends because he had a flashy over the arm throw that was a near guaranteed ring out if you were close to the edge. Imagine my surprise when years later I discovered that among people who are actually good at the game he's considered to be literally the worst character. XD
Clarification on the Lars in Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 situation: That costume he has is designed by Masashi Kishimoto, aka the creator of Naruto. In T6 console release, various manga artists made alternate outfits for some of the characters, like Roger Jrs' skeleton costume, Kazuyas' robot outfit, Jins' white costume etc. So the Lars outfit is made by Kishimoto himself, and both Tekken and Naruto games are made/published by Bandai Namco. It's a neat guest character choice
I love how it's basically in his contract that he has to be playable in any game that licenses his songs. Say what you want about the guy, that's actually cool as fuck.
That first Brawl trailer with Snake popping out of the box and saying "Showtime" still lives in my head rent free. Honestly one of the best reveals ever imo
I can't believe you didn't bring up one of the most iconic crossovers. Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne: Featuring Dante From the Devil May Cry Series. Earthworm Jim was also in Clayfighters lol
@10:40 Dragon Quest series has for the most part been a huge representation for Nintendo. Only 7 and 8 were on Sony system exclusive for a long time. 1-6, 9-11 all were initially released on a Nintendo Systems.
On that bit where people who grew up on Minecraft are in their early 50s, just trying to fathom how much older those that grew up on KH are given that it came out a whole 10 years before MC lol
26:50 FUN FACT about Negan: He is the only Tekken 7 character to NOT be included on the updates fot Tekken 7 arcade machines. Geese and Noctis got in but not Negan.
They count because they are Third Party characters, but they also don't count because they're a pretty OBVIOUS pick since Banjo & Kazooie games are bonafide Nintendo 64 classics. They don't exactly hit the same as Sonic or Cloud, let's just say.
Negan is still, to this day, the craziest guest character appearance I've ever seen in a fighting game. It wouldn't have been the least surprised if he was announced for MK11, but Tekken 7?? And he ended up being my favorite character as a person who's never seen a single episode of Walking Dead? That was mindblowing lol.
Warden from For Honor was the thing that got me to play Samurai Shodown. I ended up refunding it because this was back when the netcode was a crime against humanity. I don't know if it's better now, but I'd say it's probably too late with no people playing it anymore. Warden was so unexpected, but I absolutely adore his design and hate the fact that he's tied down to For Honor and locked in Ubisoft jail. At the very least, I have cemented a permanent 100% win-rate in SamSho at 10 wins/0 losses with Warden.
Since Rage of the Dragons was Recently Added on Steam, Switch, & PS5, 4 of their Characters, Jimmy, Lynn, Elias, & Mr. Jones guest stars in Atlus' Power Instinct Matrimelee.
Long comment, but this is just some extra information to add to the video, in case Max missed some of the info in this comment. Assuming he and anyone else even cares lol. 8:52 Not sure if this counts, but Cloud was in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories for the Gameboy Advance, so he did have Nintendo history if that counts. 10:13 Persona Q was a 3DS series, and Persona Q2 has Persona 5 characters. Which released around Smash Bros Ultimate's release, so it may depend on whether Persona Q2 released before or after Smash Ultimate to count. 13:10 I don't know who else besides myself, or how many people wanted Jin in Smash, but I do know many would have loved to see Heihachi in Smash. I don't know why not Jin, but as for Heihachi, it's probably due to the fact that his VA passed away (which isn't the first time that happened). Kazuya did make crossover appearances as he was an enemy unit in Namco X Capcom, and was playable along with Jin in Project X Zone 2.Who is more popular between Jin an Kazuya, personally I don't know for sure as I always noticed the popularity between them always seems to shift until Smash Bros. I would like to say Jin was before Kazuya's addition to Smash because, Jin does make more playable appearances in crossovers than Kazuya did before. 18:15 Don't forget, Joker was in Mortal Kombat VS Dc Universe, and was even referenced in one of Shang Tsung's fatalities in MK9. Even going so far as to use the same voice samples from Joker's voice in MKVSDC. 42:51 Akira wasn't the only guest, The character on the far right, Selvaria is also a guest, and is also a Sega character too. She is from Valkyria Chronicles, a tactical strategy JRPG. 47:02 If I recall, they didn't use him because something related to not wanting to ruin his story, so they made a semi OC named Nicole, a woman who is essentially wearing the same Spartan uniform as Mast Chief does, under the code name Spartan 458. Her moveset was fairly unique, however she does share some moves with characters like Bayman and Leon. Fun Fact about Soul Calibur II. Spawn wasn't originally the one they were going to stick with, but rather it was rumored Kasumi from Dead or Alive was meant to be the guest character for the Xbox side of the game, considering DOA was an Xbox exclusive for a while at the time.
A bit of an honorable mention in smash they had shovel Knight as an assistant trophy which makes him the very first indie game character to make an appearance in there. The Xbox version of MK9 would have guessed characters but Microsoft wanted to act like jerks and refuse. originally netherrealm wanted Marcus Fenix and Master Chief for the Xbox 360 version
Gameplay and story wise Fenix would have been perfect for MK, both franchises love finishers. If he gets in a future one, I'd love to see D'Vorah integrated into his story and their interactions. Also Max forgot Heihachi was already in Smash.
25:30 Its funny, I'm in the group of people that didn't enjoy FF15 that much from what I played. But Seeing Noctis and his move set in any fighting games immediately was exciting just cause of how much they were able to do with it just conceptually XD
I'd include Scorpion in Injustice as guest character. His inclusion makes sense in hindsight since WB bought them, but no one knew the extend of what they could do with the DC license especially after the MKvsDC fiasco. Keep in mind WB is known for being protective and stingy with DC characters, they used to block characters in movies from being in TV shows regardless of medium. Also ,watching this made me wonder if RWBY characters are in BBCT due to a senior member in the dev team was a big fan of DoA. Maybe after playing DoA4 he found Haloid while looking into Master Chief and then became a Monty Oum fan.
Ah yes, The Bat-Embargo in the 2000's. Where Scarecrow, Ra's and Two-Face couldn't show up in the Batman 2004 show because they were reserved for The Dark Knight trilogy. Same with Robin (until the 4th Season) because he was in Teen Titans. This is why Batgirl showed up first in the 3rd Season.
His reaction is exactly what I feel about bringing him in smash and man was I ever pumped. At the time I played smash 4 I wasn’t much of a final fantasy fan. Back then i played super smash flash 2 with Sora as a kid and I looked up what Sora is from and when I see cloud I questioned “who’s that guy?” Later on in life I only look at cloud just a little bit before smash 4 hit and I was a Nintendo fan. Little that I know that final fantasy started with Nintendo and if I know final fantasy most of the time, then maybe I’ve have the interest of the game better because final fantasy in smash could be anyone like warrior of light, onion knight, Cecil, terra, tidus, or Zidane. Cloud in smash is absolutely amazing.
Some say Max is still looking for Clouds Smash release date to this day. None of us are sure because he told us all to wait there while he goes to find it.
I know she isn't released yet but I have to mention Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners getting into Guilty Gear Strive is absolutely amazing. Not only is she an amazing aesthetic fit but having an existing IP supporting anime original character and that series being absolutely beloved puts her in an absolutely amazing spot add in the extremely unlikely nature of it happening in the first place and her quality of design, how suited she is for a fighting game and fan appreciation puts her in my book at like a solid 9. Lastly extremely surprised Arbitor, Rash and General Raam in Killer Instinct weren't mentioned considering it's one of Max's most beloved games ever.
I really wish Guest Characters (besides Smash Bros) in general were able to come back through a fighting game franchise for at least one sequel. Alot of people already main certain Guest Characters in a particular game, then they feel pretty bummed out because of the licensing deals/royalty fees it costs for original companies to re-purchase them again. I hope they're able to make those deals alot more easier to handle in the future soon. 😔🙏

Banjo can 100% be graded because he got bought away from Nintendo. His entire series went up in smoke because Microsoft owned Rare and after Nuts and Bolts didn't want anything to do with the franchise. It honestly seemed like he was a dead character.
So him getting pulled back by Nintendo as a guest character (still Microsoft owned) was just fucking amazing
11/10

Geese getting revealed at Evo 2017 legit moved mountains
In retrospect, Geese being added to Tekken contributed to SNK’s revival as a major gaming company and the butterfly effect has led to a golden age of Fighting Games to where now the possibilities are endless and fans get to reap the benefits of them.
10:55 Kyo REALLY messed up when he failed to grab that letter, huh?

Naw bruh. He spaced a fate worst than death
Kyo's only fault was not being the first SNK fighting game character. Sakurai could have easily chosen Iori to be in Smash.
All I can hear whenever Terry gets revealed as a guest in another game instead of Kyo is Randy Orton's Burn in my light while looking down at Kyo.

And that theatrerythm game on 3ds
So the way Sakurai chose characters wasn't if that specific character showed up on a Nintendo console but if the franchise the character comes from once did. A large collection of final fantasy games have appeared on Nintendo consoles and FFVII is from the most popular of the franchise so Cloud was chosen represent the Final Fantasy brand as a whole.
Wasn't he in tactics?
@@thezx5795 the original ff tactics, which was ps1 and later psp, he wasn't in the nintendo tactics games
The trailer's also a callback to the K Rool reveal!
Microsoft itself is Slowly going 3rd Party, because the Xbox Brand is STILL Haunted by the Xbox One's Failed Launch too this day.
Banjo is a 10/10 for sure, but Phil Spencer couldn't stop talking about how he wanted Banjo in Smash
Yeah Max lame af for that
Love how they recreated alien vs predator in MKX.
NRS gave those two so much love and cool references with their unique win poses (skull trophies and chestburster)

You think that Jago or Tusk would make better guest characters for SoulCalibur on Xbox, but they weren't on the table this whole time.
Did not know that... and I wonder if I wouldn't have preferred it that way, in some way. Spawn is neat and all, but Hayabusa would've felt more suitable, a video game character for a video game etc.
Also worth noting that DOA4's Nicole-458 inspired Bungie to make the Hayabusa armor in Halo 3, aka the coolest skin in the game.

The Lars Alexanderson crossover with Naruto Storm 2 is the perfect time to set up a Rate the Super. I honestly think that is the biggest crossover ever even if something like Snake was "less expected."
Feels like Max is using modern day perspective to cloud his judgement. Yes, Smash now is loaded with 3rd party characters, but at the time it wasn't. It was literally just Snake. As someone who was checking the Brawl Dojo daily back in the day, I can tell you that nothing was bigger than Sonic.

Link in Soul Calibur 2 is the All Time best guest character in a Fighting Game. Extremely fun and hype.
XD
Clarification on the Lars in Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 situation:
That costume he has is designed by Masashi Kishimoto, aka the creator of Naruto.

They count because they are Third Party characters, but they also don't count because they're a pretty OBVIOUS pick since Banjo & Kazooie games are bonafide Nintendo 64 classics.

Nothing can top Max's first reveal reaction to Cloud being announced. "No fucking way! NO FUCKING WAY!"

Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring, was just the FF7 fighting game in my head with Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, Yuffie, Vincent and Zach.
Praying on GOD we get Jin in the next game as an echo fighter. T7 was Kazuya's time, now it's Jin.
When certain guest characters dropped it was so insane like what is this person doing here😂
