  • The Natural Hair Community has been wondering if Curly Cuts damage hair. A renowned natural hair stylist , Anthony Dickey, weighed in and cautioned against getting Curly Cuts. I respect his opinion. I've been getting Curly Cuts since 2021. Curly Cuts have allowed me to wear my hair in a wash and go style that I truly enjoy. Curly Cuts and wash and gos have helped me to embrace my natural hair. In this video I explain why I'm continuing to get curly cuts despite the stern warning.

This topic has been exhausted. While he could've been talking about curly cuts in general, if felt more like a BGC and CIK pile on to me. I know that Aeliese responded to his remarks but I can't ingest too much more of this topic. I appreciate that you said when he came out with his method he had naysayers as well. I tend to think that most stylists, like your stylist, have many tools in their toolbox that they use. For those who are having a tough time after going through a curly cut experience and regimen, I really think there are entirely too many factors at play to attribute the problems they are facing to one thing. Obviously people can do what they want, but this conversation gets more and more disheartening to me, because it's presented as a zero sum game. And it is not a zero sum game and never has been.

Thank you for sharing❤ I do find the current conversations disheartening. Mainly because it complicates natural hair and ultimately pushes women away from embracing their texture.

Great video. I’m not pressed about any of this because I have a Mohawk, and cut my own hair w/ clippers. It’s rare that I schedule with my barber here lately. I do all the other important stuff though- cleanse, condition, deep conditioning, leave- ins, etc. good to see you Mimi. Stay blessed.

I respect everyone's opinion in this space but I think it's interesting who people respond to. Everything Anthony Dickie is said is the same thing as other stylist have said. Since BGC I have decided to assess my hair and do what works for me regardless of any stylist's opinion, whether they are popular, famous, well known, not known whatever.

IDK since I don't go to a stylist, but to me it seems that curly cuts are basically for shape and not for length. I've never considered a curly cut because I don't think they are the correct cut for my length, and I'm not interested in angles, or layers, and such. They are cute but don't go along with my hair goals.

I respect his opinion and I'm here for someone getting straight to the point...but he sounded somewhat condescending. I'm going to keep getting my curly cut. The stylist I go to takes her time to check for hair where the shaft may be split or fairy knots and etc.

Thanks for sharing ❤️ He was extremely condescending. My stylist, like yours, takes her time and looks for damage.

Me being honest I tried the curly cuts and all my hair never got cut. When i would do my hair after I would find a lot of hair that was never touched by scissors. It became expensive and annoying. I prefer to blowout my hair and get and actual even cut. It works best for me.

Agreed!! I do not want anyone cutting my dense hair curl by curl. I prefer blown out cuts because of my density. I think the cut I got back in the day was Deva and was a pure waste of my money because it didn't consider shrinkage and the way my hair shrinks etc. Had to get another cut right after.

I feel like even if a stylist does go section by section and meticulously cut every curl it's still not a thorough cut because you can't see all of the split ends when the curls are clumped together.

      @Untwisted_hair  Рік тому +1

Thanks for sharing. This hasn't been true for me. I haven't blown out my hair since 2020. When I went for my 1st curly cut in 2021 she showed me my split ends. Also the people who initially made the claims about curly cuts not addressing split ends have had several blown out/pressed out cuts and still have split ends. So apparently those cuts aren't getting all their ends either.

Your hair looks wonderful! Very insightful video!
Thank you for approaching this topic in an honest logistical way! I'm so glad you shared the expertise of your stylist. Her training, knowledge, experience, and continued partnership with you is evident in the description how she cuts curly hair!
I agree with you that not all curly cuts are created equal. Some style artists may cut curl by curl, but that doesn't mean that all of them do. So to make a blanket statement that the only way to cut a natural curly hair style is to blow the hair out is unfair to the style artist and client who have worked together to achieve the health and style of hair desired in the way that works best! It also sends a message that, "it's my way that counts" with no room for improvement or a different perspective. I find that very small minded as well as sad.
I'm appreciative of the knowledge that I've gained in my natural hair journey over the years! My hair is the better for it! I've grown tired of the condensing remarks of stylists against other stylists (some mention their names and others don't)! It's not necessary. How about saying, "in my professional experience or opinion..." instead of bashing them? Some stylists and even some UA-camrs are continuing to "stoke the flames." It doesn't show me their expertise, it shows me their childish behavior.
We've come so far in this natural hair care journey! The road is wide enough for innovative and re-setting ideas!
    As always, love your content!

I used to go to the same salon as you since 2021. A lot of the time when I went to wash my hair, my hair was always tangled and a bit hard to get through. I thought that was normal. That's what i was used to with my hair. And then I got my hair blown out and cut and it was a breeze to detangle. I'm under the belief that the curly cuts weren't addressing my hair issues but curly cuts could work for other people.

I had considered going to his salon before I found my stylist. He was going to open a salon in Los Angeles before the pandemic. Your stylist kind of does the same technique except my stylist doesn’t use a brush on my hair but my hair is medium density.

The curly cut isn’t the sole issue. The ashy, dry, brittle hair that everyone has from using the double gel method, using harsh shampoo, and no oil or heavy products to moisturize is the main issue.

@@Untwisted_hairWell considering the fact that you said you’re trying to grow your hair out into a chin length bob under one of the other comments, the comment above is correct. It’ll take several yrs for you not achieve that goal w/ curly cuts when it shouldn’t have to.

Yes, my curly cut is done on my curly hair stretched out on wet hair with conditioner on it and not heat so my hair is healthy and I have no plans of wearing my hair straight. Straight hair doesn’t suit my active lifestyle. I think that curly cuts are for those who wear curly hair and not straight.
