      The hobby's been doing that since the early 2000s. Only instead of janky hardware store builds, reminiscent to what Matt is making on this channel, most is 3D printed... Infact, that vast majority of blaster at large scale events are almost exclusively made by some guy with CaD software and a 3D printer.

    I like how stupidly simple you've kept your channel thumbnail and most of your videos over your time on youtube. You explain everything easy enough for anyone with basic knowledge about how physics and machines work to understand, and don't oversaturate every video with ear destroying music and overcomplicated art, while also keeping the content from turning into what I could only describe as "there is a video in my ads" like some people do. Love the content, keep it up.

    I'd love for you to investigate optimal barrel length, A longer barrel should in theory give more accuracy, and depending on how much air is being used to blast the dart could give extre velocity to it, but there would also be extra friction from the extra length? finding the shortest barrel that still gives good performance would make these builds just look a lot cooler and could make for a nice video

    • @dogdog357
      @dogdog357 3 місяці тому +1

      I think the volume of the barrel would have to equal the volume of the plunger tube. Shouldn't be too hard to calculate

    • @abigailmcdowell4248
      @abigailmcdowell4248 3 місяці тому +2

      @@dogdog357 so that would lead to the pressure generated by the mechanism to be equal to atmospheric pressure, and so would put as much energy into the dart as possible, but that would require a really big barrel, and as the difference in volume gets smaller you would have significant diminishing returns, AND that's ignoring friction from the barrel, cutting the barrel in half would reduce the energy put into the dart by half (if the barrel starts at equal in volume to the air chamber), but would decrease the friction experienced by the dart significantly. A barrel of equal volume to the main air chamber would be the largest barrel worth testing as going beyond that would definitely reduce performance

      Longer barrel doesn't mean more accuracy if its smooth bore it only makes it more accurate if it has rifling that's why people put a scar on

    • @abigailmcdowell4248
      @abigailmcdowell4248 3 місяці тому +1

      @@DoubleDiamondBack2 rifling definitely does increase the accuracy more than just a longer barrel, but a longer barrel could still contribute to greater accuracy as a result of higher velocity, a reduction in the results of the turbulence of the launching mechanism or any remaining pressure when the dart leaves the barrel

    Awesome job! It does seem like it would be very easy to double feed the rounds if you forgot you already pumped it and theres a lot of wasted energy with a pusher that long too.

    Please put a spring to make the grip and all of the sliding mechanism biased forwards. It is pain full seeing you having to over shoot with the amount of power you push it with to finish sealing the barrel and the gun aiming down when ever you do that and almost flies out of your hand. If you added a spring or just a really strong band to bias the sliding mechanism forward it would be much more wieldable and way easier to keep your aim steady. By making it having elastic power you can let it go in the end and it will finish doing the loading your arm would be much less tiered my man.

    If you put a small sorbuthane pad on your plunger, you won't need to fear it smacking forward as much. Pretty common mod on airsoft. You may already know about it.
    Also, if you had the tings of the "fork" mounted to the pushrod, you could have the pump grip move between them in a way that minimizes travel of the pushrod. Like the stops on a mill table.

    I teach physics and these are very interesting. I’m not very familiar with Nerf guns. I am curious, how consistent are the shots? In physics, I’d like to have something that can consistently shoot at the same velocity and accurately. We do several types of projectile labs and demonstrations. My students do a lab where they must determine the velocity of the projectile, then using that information to determine the flight path of the projectile by placing hoops for the projectile to fly through and a target to hit. They also do a “monkey and a hunter” lab where they shoot a projectile and consistently hit a falling object. Do Nerf guns shoot at a fairly constant speed? Are the flight paths consistent (are there rifled Nerf guns)?

    • @matt_yuan
      @matt_yuan  3 місяці тому

      it varies

    • @vedranlucev1837
      @vedranlucev1837 3 місяці тому +1

      The darts themselves are the major variable. They are soft and squishy and not perfectly symmetrical and the foam degrades over time, so everything else being equal, the same dart could fly out with up to a +/- 20 feet per second variation between shots.
      Nerf blasters are usually not rifled but you can buy or print "SCAR" barrel attachments (String-based Auto Centering and Rotating) that put a spin on the darts for better precision, but once again the velocity is not consistent.
