Artist Louise Fletcher's process video I mentioned can be seen here: • Try this technique in ...
This video is all about what you can do when you want to have fun and loosen up in your painting style.
I experiment with texture and combining different types of drawing and painting media. The video is in realtime and I talk about what happens underway including surprising effects and results.
Using charcoal and soft pastels I explore different intersting and inspiring effects that can be achieved when combined with water and applied in a somewhat unusual way. I'm trying out both linen canvas and paper to see the difference and I'm in for a surprise at the end when I seem to have inadvertently painted a large bear in one of the paintings.

It's really cool how the random puddles of wet charcoal start to look like a landscape. Cliffs or trees maybe. I like Louise Fletcher's woork, too! Thanks for your helpful videos!
Yes I love that part also. I’m always seeing animals and faces in clouds and tree bark and such places. Always something to discover 😃
Hi! Hope you're doing well!!
Fun video!
I love charcoal for so many things!!!!❤
But another thing I've had fun with is water soluble graphite! I have nice pencils for nicer drawing when I'd like to pull out parts of it so the same gray, darker actually, so it looks like the pencil line melts into a puddle.
But years ago i brought, on sale!😊, this huge chunk or bar of it... its massive! But that makes it super wild marks, or bit fat marks. And I'll look dark, but, ya know, pencil dark. But then you get it wet and oh my goodness it's a gorgeous dark!!! So its fun on its own... but i also love using white paint to go over parts of it for a beautiful gray. Just more fun stuff to mess with :)❤
I am a watercolour artist but I love your channel. It is so inspiring to see how you work and some of your videos on colour have really helped me. Thank you!
I like Louise Fletcher too 😊. I think you are amazing also. Thank you for your videos❤
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you experiment with those pieces of canvas and I saw the Bear, and a couple of dogs faces in the bottom one too. I’m definitely inspired to try this out too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
Your videos are awesome and I love your calm demeanor and abstract landscapes. Thank you for weekly ins!
My pleasure, thanks for watching 🌻🌻
So pretty - the painting experiments and your garden.
Thanks so much 🌻🌻🌻
Thank you for sharing this interesting technique, it s very inspiring !
I’d add some matte medium to the water so it grabs and holds the charcoal and pastel down 😊
Nice experiment 😊
Yes that’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing 💫💫
I’ll try it out this weekend or this evening while I’m waiting for paint to dry and see what happens 😊
@@TheDanishPainterI tried it and it works - will email results
Thank you. Just what I needed this morning
You could try stitching the pieces together and the stitching would be part of a new artwork. Aka Frankenstein
Ooohhh nice idea, thanks 🤩
Beautiful experiment!
Thank you for sharing this. I'm going to try this right now.
Very nice marks.
Thank you! Nice explorations and ideas. Love the results...
Thanks . It looks really interesting. Have a nice day : )
What would you use for a fixative, brand, etc.?
Initially the charcoal on the bottom looked like little bit cave art. (Buffalo) We have a small number of buffalo 🦬 across western Canada. I think we had to get them from the USA because we killed them all off in Canada! Doesn’t sound like something polite Canadian’s would do, does it. But it’s true, after all we had a Wild West also 😮
Merci
Any suggestions about fixatives for pastels?
I’ve never used before
Any fixative suitable for pastels/charcoal/graphite should be fine. I use different brands and don’t have a preference. Hope that helps
What kind of fixative and how to use?
What suggestions do you have for a sketch book?
Use what you already have or go for mixed media or watercolor sketchbooks as they can take more water without creasing and buckling. Happy painting 🎨🎨
