Cannabis before bed makes me feel wide awake the next day up until the afternoon. Coffee does nothing.

I had been using Nuvigil since April (I used to have migraines and now is rarely) I had lose weight, but because I also had the energy to eat (I was mostly sleepy) , and I can workout. I don’t have any other symptoms. Since the first day I got in Nuvigil I had that wake up sensation. It made me feel in control of my life.

Why is this doctor referring to this as idiopathic when two sentences later he states the patient has sleep apnea? Idiopathic implies that the hypersomnia has an unknown cause. This patient's hypersomnia is not caused by an unknown reason; it is caused by sleep apnea. If she is getting the apnea completely under control, only then might we consider it idiopathic. I would agree that the patient should get tested for narcolepsy (a disorder on which the brain falls into *REM* stage sleep suddenly and bypassing all previous stages of sleep). Many sleep centers will not perform a sleep test for narcolepsy *based on excessive sleepiness symptoms* without testing to rule out sleep apnea. This patient would've been required to test for apnea first, and given that she was diagnosed with it, it is unlikely further sleep tests were done other then ones to test the effectiveness of apnea treatments.
You should do better to 1. Explain why condition such as hypersomnia may be referred to as idiopathic, and 2. Pick an example of idiopathic hypersomnia in which a patient has had other major sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, ruled out.

For the first time in 20 years I found someone to listen and sent me to a sleep specialist. I am so grateful to have met this man that spent almost 2 hours with me the first time. He believes that in the 3000 patient's hes treated that the low 3% have both sleep apnea and narcolepsy but he was starting with the apnea test first as you said. To find that you have sleep apnea first and have time to get the machine to help you and see how well you feel after a few weeks to then move to the narcolepsy test if necessary afterwards. You're very right!

@@nicolebarnett8702 I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and narcolepsy type 2, but me thinks it is really idiopathic hypersomnia. Using a CPAP machine has not relieved my symptoms. I feel basically the same no matter how much or how little I sleep. My condition forces me to take naps daily but I get little or no relief from them. I can drink a cup of coffee, take a 30mg Adderall XR, and still fall asleep. I am going to try the BiPAP device next. Thanks for sharing and take care out there.

I have been diagnosed with severe Idiopathic Hypersomnia AND Narcolepsy. I’ve been explained that I have what’s called long sleeping narcolepsy. Meaning while I go in rem very quickly my time in restful sleep is normal or above normal . It’s called long sleeping narcolepsy and theoretically if Im sleeping that well I should wake up rested but I dont at all so they can’t explain what’s causing my Hypersomnia.

@Raj Dasgupta you mentioned there are many more treatments beyond the Cpap and Bipap machines to help sleep apnea. What other options are there? I've had sleep apnea for about 7 years now and I never feel like it completely works. I've had multiple sleep tests and the latency test but they say all looks well with the Cpap machine I'm using. The only added diagnosis was the Hypersomnia but I'd love to hear what other sleep apnea options I have that no one else has seemed to recommend.

You have long sleeping patterns that does not agree with society.
Here take some drugs that will give you side effects, do not "oversleep"
come back when you get stomach pain and a worsen condition.

I've gotten like 12-18 hours of sleep during gap years and still couldn't feel fresh and felt depressed waking up. It's a bit deeper than that imho.

Sleeping for 16 or even 19 hours a day is very, very debilitating. Not just from the amount of time spent sleeping, but the feeling of never being refreshed. You spend all this time sleeping and it fundamentally still leaves you feeling groggy and unalert. It is not "society" pushing pills, it basically can make life without medication a living nightmare.

    • @thebrognator3524

not that simple, this is a condition, and it is debilitating. Even tho I kinda managed to create a life for myself that lets me sleep 12 hours:
A: it sucks that 5-6 hours of your life are being stolen everyday
B: it feels like shit all the time when you're awake. You know that feeling of having a good 'ol satisfying sleep? Well, we don't. You wake up feeling worse than when you fell asleep, it feels slightly better when you are distracted, then feels like shit again. It's a constant state of feeling (maybe actually being?) sleep deprived.
Just like an hinsomniac won't be happy for sleeping just 2 hours per day.

my wife has this and they started her on nuvigil( not sure how to spell it) but she was allergic to it. now she's prescribed Ritalin and alot of it. but it still doesn't help all that well. but we're working on it to stop them and possibly try new things other then what the Drs want her on I kinda of force her to wake up and start to move about. then slowly doing more active things like going places to what a she has to walk around like stores. got her a treadmill wich she uses sometimes she's also starting to exercise more and by God's grace it's helping more and more then medicine. I explain to her of others where Drs say they have this percentage of being able to do this or that and these people blow these Drs numbers out of the water and some totally beat their disibilities completely. I also tell her don't let your body win over with this and say your stinger then that and by lyrical she is doing it. anything is possible if you put your mentally normal brain to work. some people don't have the mental status to do that but most do and alot of them just give up that's not the way to be. even if you don't have the positive or encouraging support from others just remember you are your strongest support system available. just our story and outlook on stuff and may not help anyone but never hurts to try it right. remember you can do it

You are not alone!! This is almost exactly what I do! The only difference is I have a way longer "nap"at 6pm, like for 4 hours! And it’s every day, not just weekends or holidays. I miss out on soooo much in life.
