The Concept2 Model D rower is the premier indoor rowing machine on the market. This rower is used worldwide as the standard tool for rowing races, rowing games, competitions and other events. It is the preferred rower in big box gyms, CrossFit studios and other competitive training facilities. The Concept2 Model D provides a smooth rowing experience with a sturdy catch, smooth drive, nickel-plated chain, comfortable seat, and unmatched air resistance. You can’t out-row this machine, but we’d love to see you try! If you are looking for an affordable, lightweight, folding rower with an impressive PM5 monitor that doesn’t require electricity, the Concept2 is the best option. However, air resistance is noisy, so this rower is best suited for dedicated training spaces, garage gyms, or a separate room in your home.
    Concept2 Features:
    Rower Features
    Footprint: 96” L x 24” W x 14” High
The Concept2 Model D is a narrow rower at just 24” wide. It has a long frame that spans 96” long, but it can be folded into two parts for storage. It is also relatively lightweight and does not require electricity to operate.
    Seat height: 14” high
The Concept2 Model D seat is 14” off the floor. This is the standard rower height used by most gyms and studios. For users who may need a higher seat height, Concept2 also offers the Model E, which is the exact same rower, but it sits higher off the floor.
Max User Weight: 500lb, Machine weight: 57lbs
The Concept2 Model D only weighs 57 pounds, which is remarkably lightweight for exercise equipment. It is easy to move. It will also support up to 500 pounds of user weight, making it one of the most durable and sturdy rowers on the market!
Storage: Folds into two parts for easy storage
As mentioned, the Concept2 Model D folds in half and can be stored upright along a wall to open floor space as needed.
    Air Fan Resistance
Air resistance is the preferred method of rowing resistance due to the fact that it is virtually impossible to outrow it! Resistance is generated based on the user’s pull strength, so if you pull harder, it is more of a challenge. This makes it the ideal training tool for nearly any athlete.
    PM5 backlit display - requires 2 D-cell batteries
    Syncs with Concept2 ErgData app
Metrics for: distance, speed, pace, calories burned, and watts
Various games, programs and rowing distances
Bluetooth enabled, Connects to wireless heart rate monitors
You can connect any Bluetooth enabled heart rate monitor with the PM5 for accurate heart rate training.
Designed for wired machine to machine racing
The PM5 is designed for wired racing between rowers and is used as the standard for all indoor rowing competitions.

Great review of a great machine. I rowed on a concept 2 in 1985 high school crew. This machine will not fail you. The only thing I saw missing from the review is the fold up process, and how much space that takes to store.

That was an unusually thorough review. Very well done.
The only thing I would add is, for those who are thinking of spending twice as much to get online content, there are dozens of videos out there on rowing, including various workouts from beginner on up. You don't need to spend $2,500 + even if you are someone looking for direction on what to do. At its price point, it is almost crazy how good a deal it is.

Great! My advice is to hold out for what you want! Don't get discouraged, wait times for all the quality machines are long right now. Sometimes people will opt for something lower quality because it will arrive in two weeks rather than four. Our advice is to wait for what you want, you won't regret it later. You'll love the C2!

@@backtobody Hi - yes, we've decided to buy the Concept2 when our waitlist turn comes (in about 10 days!). We considered Hydrow, Ergatta, Total Gym Rower, NordicTrack's... besides all being more expensive, many require a plug or wifi, and although that would be ok most of the time, we like that the C2 is unplugged with a battery monitor that gets great praise. The feet placement of Concept2 vs. water rowers is more ideal, and it's just a workhorse. We plan to move it outside on nice days and row on our patio or deck, just lighter weight and offers more freedom. We'll also stand it up when not in use. We don't think we'd get the value out of the large-screen bells and whistles others come with, or use those features much. Some programs require subscriptions too, so more ongoing costs. Too many pros for the C2 to pass it up, in our opinion. Happy hunting!

This is an excellent overall review of the Concept 2 Model D indoor rower… very comprehensive and nicely narrated! As someone else suggested, I’d either lower the volume of the background music while the narration is in progress- or maybe only use the music at the beginning, in the cut scenes between the narrated segments, and at the end of the video. I have this exact rower at home btw (picked it up late 2020 after all of the gyms closed due to Covid)… my wife and I both bang on it twice a week, and we love it.

Thanks for the review. I bought one of these a few months ago as a low impact alternate to my jogging and in case I need to be inside because of weather. The only issue I've had is for my big butt the seat is a bit unyielding so I bought a cushion (not the one offered by Concept2) and that helps some but I'm also looking for something to make it more comfortable. Another thing that has impressed me is that it is very easy to maintain (lots of UA-cam videos about that) and Concept2 has replacement parts available that are reasonably priced so if you maintain it properly this model could last for many years.

I am seriously thinking about buying one of these. Can anyone tell me what typically breaks or malfunctions first on one of these? I use my exercise equipment a minimum of 4 times a week for 45 minutes year after year and recently wore out an elliptical machine in less than 6 years. From what I have read these rowers are very durable. Thank you in advance for any information you might have.

The Concept 2 rowers is one of the most durable pieces of fitness equipment on the market. They don't break, and if something needs to be repaired, it usually super easy.

Since I've been told by my son in law (a fitness instructor) most gyms prefer these I would say that is a testament to their durability. I also have a cousin who is a competitive rower and he claims this is the "gold standard" for dry land training. There are lots of videos, including on the Concept 2 website about maintenance. Most of the machine is pretty basic mechanically. Concept 2 has a list of replacement parts which you can purchase, I'm pretty sure that most folks could reasonably replace most parts as needed with the videos available.

The Model D is the standard rower and the Model E sits higher off the floor, so it's better for larger users or those with limited mobility. Otherwise they offer the same functionality.

I had a go on one of these at a retailer and was very disappointed. I'm not a rower and although I use other cardio gym equipment I've never really used rowers so perhaps I just wasn't using it correctly? The problem was that even on maximum resistance it wasn't difficult enough and there was virtually no resistance on my legs. I was only on there for 5 mins but my legs just weren't getting anything. I much prefer cross-trainers (ellipticals) and vertical stepper machines but I live on a boat and my ceiling height is too low.

sounds like the one you used was messed up. I row with the fan set around 5/6 and I get a decent leg workout b/c a good row stroke is powered mostly from the legs. If your feet were set too high, then the thighs get in the way and that does lessen the leg drive. It's better to err on the side of having the feet set lower than higher.

Just received the concept 2 model D rowing machine. Seems really good so far, however. They really need to add some cushion to the seat for boney ass guys like myself, or at least an option of paying more for something way more comfortable. I already have a soft towel on the seat after just 2 minutes of rowing. 2nd thing I was not thrilled about was the straps for securing the feet. Takes way too long to get my feet out of them, so I am already going without them. Sorry, not trying to beat up on this machine, I like the mechanics of it, just these two items.
