Totally depends on the pond. I have one and the water level changes by a few inches with rain and dry spells. The fish are smart enough not to stay on land thats drying out. Most ponds have an overflow pipe that will set a max level. Its possible for fish that like flowing water to try and follow the flow down the pipe and out of the pond. If there's no overflow pipe and the landscape is uneven, you can flood and end up with puddles or small ponds as the level returns down to normal. Some fish will be stuck in the puddles.
