Im so new and lame dreaming about bass since I was 15. I’m almost 31. How screwed I am if I have the “less stringed instrument”? Les is my god and I don’t know where to begin my journey. Standard bass guitar? Or go further? I’m confused.
As a drummer I will translate. This young man is trying to describe triplet's in the verse (i think thats what he said. I think he was playing them as paradiddles (a drummer term describing sticking) Triplets are counted usually like **1- trip- let 2-trip-let** and played as RLR LRL ect. He is playing it as RLR RLR LRL ect. Kid seems like he researched how Les plays it. When I play it on drums I count it as "trip a la trip a la 2 trip a la trip a la 4" Weird drummer talk but helps.
Primus songs are usually way harder on bass. Which is why if I had to cover a Primus song,it would have to be My Name is Mud,I gotta cut my bassist some slack.
You can play it either way ( with diddles or hand to hand ). When I started playing I was taught if you can count it you can play it. Its always helped me. Just repeat the phrase. **note I am not a bassist, just a lowly drummer and am only trying to help explain the phrase****
1:29 where I screw up is the second string.. it’s like my fingers and brain doesn’t work that way.... can anyone give me advice other than just practice?
i saw primus once they had buckethead there too. my name is mud with buckethead. are you getting the new primus album in september. i wonder if primus has any left after 13 yrs.
One must be cautious in this tune, a careful ear will reveal where the floor tom fits into the riff...It is not all bass guitar providing the muted tones.
well to be honest thats one of the reason why i started playing bass never toutched a instrument before but i guess i should learn the basics first and get felxible with booth hands but thaaaanks soo much duude !
Hey man, thanks for the help, Ive been wanting to learn how to play this song the right way, but could never find how. And thanks for explaining the muted part, never understood what he was doing at that part.
That's sweet as bro, but in the verse mutes I've noticed on a live video the last strike is not a thumb tap, it's a right hand muted sweep. Try this: tap L/mute pluck. Tap L/mute pluck. R/sweep L/mute pluck. L/mute pluck. Tap L/mute R/sweep if that makes any sense, same shit different smell, it's a lil harder to get, but once u get it smooth it's friggin awesome!!!! ;-)
Very nice- thx for this, very accurate. Music is good, so is fried chicken for those who partake. But no: sweet loving makes the world go 'round. You will find this to be true, why would I lie??
I need help. I started playing bass a year ago. It's funny, because when I started playing, I also started to listen to Primus. They are awesome. But anyway, the big deal is My name is mud is one of my favourites songs, but I happen to have a 4-string bass, so I've tried for months to achieve the sound of the song. Not the muted part. I can do that without any problem, but I need a way to play the rest of the song. Can you help me? Please, I love this song too much o_o
wrong, there is no open B. He thumps the second fret of the B twice, hammers on to the D and and thumbs the G. Like 22-3 22-3 on the B string and then thumbs the G on the E string.
You know he's a les fan when his name is whamola
Exactly my first thought
Whamola
Wynonas got herself a big brown beaver
@@Monkeydude100does she show it off to all her friends?
I'm new to bass, about 2 years in, and I've always wanted to learn this song. Because of you and this video, I got this. Thanks for your help

Me tooooo
@@awokadzia No matter the strings it's the player that is important. Just by a standard bass guitar with 4 string like a Harley Benton for example
Judging from your bass, your personality and your Alive poster, I feel like if I knew you we would be best friends.
What about after the part where Claypool says "m-m-m-m-m-m-m mud"? Could you maybe do a full lesson please?
I read this in Les's voice 😂. You wrote that perfect
That's all i could hear too!🤣🤣
Thx that really helped... You should do more lessons
WHAMOLA COME BACK!!! It's been 11 years, but we are finally ready for you!!!!
Is this even possible to play on a 4 stringer?
Just tune it to BEAD
Ill have to try. but i think my E string might get too loose
yeah.. that's why I need a 5-string bass :/
or you can buy a 5-string string set and not use the G string
Slurpbzs I am playing this song on 4 string. Just use thick strings.
Bibis Product Palacement Hmm maybe someday but next strings I'll buy will be 45-100
ayy got that same pink Floyd poster ! from the English pressing of Dark side
Bruh same
Bro this tutorial is so good it makes up so much for the camera and mic quality
Definetly going to take your approach for the muted slap part.
fuck your good dude! bass slapping is hard as shit , good job🤘
Hell yeah dude! Finally a good bass tutorial on My Name Is Mudd. Thanks a lot dude, keep it up! Primus sucks!!
Hey, thank you so much! This opened my eyes! One simply can't figure out what Les does from the official music video.
This is such a wholesome video thank you.

You opened my mind to some things, fuck the haters.
Dude thank you for posting this!Helped so much!
Wow, this songs actually not that hard
Because he plays it slightly wrong..Same technique in the intro as verse and its fret 2 and 3, not 1 and 3..
@@Timbo6669 still not that hard
It’s one of the easiest songs I know it’s also pretty fun

1:50 holy shit
that isnt actually all that hard to do, you just have to use the palm slap with the fretting hand between every slap and pop
Actually dude just watched another live video and I've been complicating it lol!
Your versions spot on mate!!
So could I maybe learn this on 4 string it dosent look like he uses the bottom two anyway
Nice one of the most helpful videos about primus I have seen. You should do more of them
ahhh i had never played a six string and now IM REALIZING I CAN PLAY THIS ON MY 5 STRING
and ummm, when i watch the my name is mud video, the begining looks like he uses more than just a couple strings
Where is he now?!
Excellent dude!!!! That rocks!!!
This is perfect thank you
1:29 where I screw up is the second string.. it’s like my fingers and brain doesn’t work that way.... can anyone give me advice other than just practice?
Hey dude, how are ya? Man can you play, I hope ypure still into bass and still playin, hope youre alive and well. Your right arm technique is beastly.
Hey mate, that is ridiculously helpful. Thanks!

the tuning is a tad high, but you got the technique down, damn does it sound good
Gonna have ta tune the ol five string and check it out.
Hopefully this kid has gotten somewhere with music he’s actually pretty talented especially doing an autopsy of a les claypool beat
2023 you sir are a legend thankyou❤❤

I just started listing to primus, love the bass guitar, beastly bass on it, and thanks for some pointers man.
Great video. You're awesome! Keeping making music!
Damn this is killer on my left wrist. Any tips on how to not destroy my arm or is it just a resistance I gotta build?
You're not double tapping your thumb.
thanks for helping me I've only been playing for 6 months and this helped me better my technique and playing
Nice!!! Good job Man... Dig your bass love this song

I know a little slap bass but this shouldn't be incredibly hard to learn especially with this video
The video of him at Woodstock '94 shows him playing the 2nd and 3rd frets on the B string, not the 1st and 3rd. Great video though.
Hey man, thanks for the help, Ive been wanting to learn how to play this song the right way, but could never find how. And thanks for explaining the muted part, never understood what he was doing at that part.
Well played. This is a very informative video. Thank you.
In the vid, He used a 6 string, I was told You can drop a 5 string down a whole step and a half.
Dude you're awsome. Thanks for this bass lesson. :)

Thats an awesome bass tone!
How do i have to tune my bass if i have a four string????
Yes, everything frustrates you lol thanks mate. You are great for sharing your effort :)
can u do a tutorial on jerry was a racecar driver. also, are les' songs as hard as they sound?
You are going places brother.....keep it up!
I’ve got an idea. My friend looks exactly like you and plays drums. Maybe start a band?
So he gets the dead notes.
heard the Spanish version of this yesterday. that was weird. sounded like claypool too, just in Spanish
Props on the daft punk poster
Awesome video man! Really appreciate it.
Thank you so much this was the info I needed
Everyone knows that those who play slap have children.
Dude what is your amp???? It is awesome!
Hey dude you should upload more. I think you could get a lot of subscribers.

Good lesson. Do you have any advice for the actual double-thumbing technique? I've been having trouble with it
Any tips on practicing faster slapping?
Dead Milk practice
Find someone or something you dont much care for and let em have it.
This is wrong. He thumps the open B string twice, then hammers on the second fret of the B string, then on to the G.
